welcome Welcome to our summer 2013 season. When I go into the West End these days, which I do a couple of times a week, I sometimes wonder why I bother. By the time I’ve paid the extortionate rail fares or parking, forgotten my congestion charge, struggled to find anything decent to eat for less than a king’s ransom, been disappointed by one of the ticket “offers” that leave you only able to see half the stage, waited, at the albeit very swish, Kings Cross and then braved the “vomit comet” last train home, only the amazing theatre makes it worthwhile. In recent months our audiences flocked to see Noises Off following its sell-out run at The Old Vic, they saw Rupert Everett in The Judas Kiss, Felicity Kendal in Relatively Speaking and Lenny Henry in Fences before the West End audience and they will soon see the effervescent Lynda Bellingham, on her first return since the unstoppable Calendar Girls, in the West End bound A Passionate Woman. The best of the West End is already here in Cambridge so you really don’t have to travel to see the very best that our industry has to offer. When you bear in mind that we combine this with stunning subsidised theatre, the finest touring opera and the cream of contemporary dance the bright lights of London town suddenly don’t shine so brightly. I can be home before I would have even made it to Kings Cross! As you may have seen in the press we recently received a wonderful £500,000 boost from Arts Council England towards our Act Two campaign to rebuild and extend our Front of House facilities. We are extremely hopeful of some more exciting news in the very near future. Perhaps, with bit of luck, not only will our drama be as good as the best that London can offer but we will be able to make your theatre going experience pleasurable in every sense. It would be wonderful if all our patrons could get a drink without feeling hassled, go to the loo without feeling stressed and meet friends in our foyer without thinking that they were at Piccadilly Circus! Keep your fingers crossed for us, and please talk to our Development office if you would like to know more or make a donation to the campaign. Thank you as ever for your unwavering support and encouragement and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre.

With kindest regards,

DAILY TELEGRAPH

THE TIMES

Last chance to book!

Originally produced by Newcastle’s acclaimed Live Theatre, and following sellout seasons at the National Theatre, in the West End and on Broadway, Bill Kenwright presents the award winning play The Pitmen Painters. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

Richard Alston Dance Company Unfinished Business Lachrymae The Devil in the Detail

‘Witty, chic… The whole inventive work is a delight’ SUNDAY TIMES

‘A thing of truth and beauty’ INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY

The Richard Alston Dance Company return to Cambridge Arts Theatre with a programme of three pieces all accompanied by live music. Unfinished Business is danced to the beautiful, lucid and flowing music of Mozart – the two movements of an unfinished piano sonata, Opus K533. To these, Alston has added an extraordinary arrangement of Mozart’s brilliant Gigue in D by the Italian virtuoso Federico Busoni, creating a third movement and bringing things to a rousing close. Lachrymae, set to the compassionate and tender music of Benjamin Britten, for viola and piano, spins emotional variations on a gentle song by John Dowland – quietly but deeply moving. Richard Alston has revived his effervescent The Devil In The Detail, inspired by the music of ‘King of Ragtime’ Scott Joplin. Irresistible classics such as ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ and ‘The Entertainer’ are blended with the lightness and finesse of Alston’s choreography.

By Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn

**** ‘The audience loved it. A hit’ Daily Mail

‘Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey are back in truly vintage form. As politically sharp and blissfully funny as ever’ Daily Telegraph

Following three sell-out seasons in the West End and after playing to packed houses in Cambridge last year, the hit comedy Yes, Prime Minister is back due to phenomenally popular demand. The original writers of the classic BBC TV series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for this anniversary production with a new satirical take on Whitehall. Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby are back, spinning out of control through the collapsing euro and austerity measures in a world of 24 hour news, Blackberrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers. With the country on the brink of financial meltdown the PM is staring disaster in the face with his only apparent salvation in a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge? Fast becoming the most successful play of the decade, Yes, Prime Minister marks the return to Cambridge by Michael Fenton Stevens, well loved for his many pantomime appearances at the Arts Theatre as well as roles in Benidorm, Drop The Dead Donkey and My Family. He is joined by Crispin Redman (Law and Order:UK) and Indra Ové, who starred alongside Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh in the 1995 film adaptation of Othello.

Two wealthy sisters in Padua must be married off. The modest, demure Bianca has no shortage of suitors, but who on earth will take the wild, ungovernable, ‘shrewish’ Katherina? Perhaps the gold-digging Petruchio, as maddeningly strong willed and perverse as Katherina herself, will be equal to the task of bullying her to the altar. Henry VI

Three Plays By William Shakespeare

20

HENRY VI

The plays which make up Shakespeare’s Henry VI create a world without ideology; a savage time, when the heroes are not kings, but formidable women, such as Joan of Arc, or rebels, such as Jack Cade. Bold characterisation, black comedy, rhetorical power and, in the personality of Henry VI, touching pathos combine in Shakespeare’s powerful rendering of a country racked by civil war. Shakespeare almost certainly did not set out to write a trilogy. Each play can be enjoyed without knowledge of the other but for true theatre lovers there is the rare opportunity to see all three parts in one week, with the chance to devote yourself to an entire day of the Bard on Saturday 21 September.

HARRY THE SIXTH Tuesday 17 September, 7.45pm Saturday 21 September, 12.30pm

Following the death of Henry V, celebrated for having united England and subjugated France, divisions appear at the highest levels – first between those around the infant Henry VI, later between the two great factions in English politics: the houses of Lancaster and York. Only the young Lord Talbot, locked in combat with the bewitching and enigmatic Joan of Arc, seems capable of redeeming a divided and dishonoured kingdom.

THE HOUSES OF YORK & LANCASTER

Wednesday 18 September, 7.45pm Thursday 19 and Saturday 21 September, 4pm

The saintly Henry VI is undermined by his nobles, especially the ambitious Richard, Duke of York, and by the Kentish rebellion, led by the charismatic Jack Cade, popular champion and savage critic of England’s social inequality.

THE TRUE TRAGEDY OF THE DUKE OF YORK Thursday 19, Friday 20 and Saturday 21 September, 7.45pm

A bloody power struggle opens up between the King’s party, led by the fearsome Queen Margaret, and the Yorkists, led by first Richard, then his sons Edward and ‘that lump of foul deformity’, Richard of Gloucester. The triennial Cambridge Greek Play returns to the Arts Theatre. After the success of 2010’s Agamemnon, the same creative team return this year with a double bill of tragedy and comedy. The tradition of performing a play in Greek every three years at Cambridge University extends back to 1882 and boasts an impressive alumni, from Rupert Brooke to Ralph Vaughan Williams. This is a unique opportunity to hear the extraordinary language of these two great plays, with a newly commissioned orchestral score by composer, Alex Silverman. From the suffering Prometheus, trying to save mankind, to the madcap meanderings of the all-singing, all-dancing Frogs, this promises to be a rich and varied night of great theatre.

Booking fee

All shows carry a £2.50 booking fee in addition to the published prices. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre. Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By adding a booking fee, we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity.

Refunds & exchanges

Tickets are not refundable unless a performance is cancelled. Exchanges and resales may be made under certain conditions; please contact the Box Office for details of our policy.

Discounts

Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to all performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for students, over 65’s, groups and schools. Please check with the Box Office at the time of booking for available discounts.

Please note: there are no discounts on the lowest price seats. Only one discount applies and all discounts are subject to availability.

How to apply

Panto Wheels We know Christmas is still a long way away but fundraising for our Panto Wheels scheme is storming ahead. Panto Wheels helps to subsidise travel costs to ensure that children from Cambridgeshire have the opportunity to visit the theatre and enjoy all the educational benefits it brings (as well as having a lot of fun). Last year we helped over 1400 children, who otherwise would have been unable to attend, come and see Jack and the Beanstalk. This year we want to transport even more children into the magical world of pantomime and we cannot do this without your help. For further information on the scheme and how you can help please visit our website www.cambridgeartstheatre.com

There is significant competition for work experience placements, so we ask that you send in a letter of application and a CV to vwillingale@cambridgeartstheatre.com. This should outline your experience, your interest in Theatre and future aims. The next stage of the application process is to invite you to attend an interview at the theatre.

This year our Marketing and Education Officer, Victoria Willingale, is breaking a sweat by cycling 100km in June to raise money for this great scheme. You can sponsor her at www.virginmoneygiving.com/VictoriaWillingale. If you would like any more information about work experience or Panto Wheels please contact Victoria Willingale, Marketing and Education Officer on 01223 578912 or email at vwillingale@cambridgeartstheatre.com.
