Welcome to our Summer 2019 season.
The question I’m most often asked about running the Theatre is “How do you put the program together?”. Some people think we have famous actors on tap, who are all banging on our doors to work with us. Others believe there is the equivalent of a great theatrical Waitrose for productions, where we walk along an aisle of Hamlets and pick the one we want, with the appropriate stellar cast! Of course the real answer to the question is with great difficulty and a lot of luck. We directly produce some of our own work (Aladdin, 84 Charing Cross Road, Rebus: Long Shadows, The Real Thing, La Strada, Pressure) which can play at our Theatre, sometimes go out on tour or into the West End. Over the years we have built a strong network of relationships with producers and touring theatre companies and we can combine their wonderful work with our own productions. We want to continue to present opera, dance and one-night performances as well as all genres of theatre. We are determined to cater to all our audience needs, regardless of who you are or your history with our Theatre. We can often get the right balance of productions but very seldom in the order we want or need them! Although we may be keen to present a particular play, often the producer involved wants far more money than we think we could ever take. Sometimes individual productions which have been months in the planning collapse before they go on sale, leaving us with unfillable gaps or sometimes, like To Kill a Mockingbird, they fall apart after they have gone on sale! We are a charity rather than a commercial theatre and, although we must balance the books, we are here for the long-term benefit of our supporters and community. Our ticket prices need to be as affordable as possible and we need to provide a range of available ticket prices. Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. Performances need to be mounted at times to suit the audiences involved, which may not suit the logistical requirements of visiting companies. We will always want to offer significant concessions to school groups and provide the additional support needed for customers with access requirements. We want to provide pre or post show talks or workshops for school audiences, but it may not be in the commercial interests of visiting producers to do so. Wherever possible we will provide signed, captioned, audio described and relaxed performances, regardless of whether visiting companies can contribute financially or not. Once we have managed to balance all these factors, normally some kind of disaster befalls us, like a show dropping out, but we often get lucky with a late breaking pre or post West End show. This season we have struggled with all of these factors and more, but as I write this welcome after a few sleepless nights, I’m really pleased with the result. Our aim is to inspire and nurture a lifelong love of the performing arts, whether it’s a child’s first visit, or you have been attending for many years. Do let us know what you think. And why?” Richard is best known as the regular host of BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live programme and appears regularly on Newsnight and TV panel shows such as QI and Have I Got News For You. TRIPLE BILL INGOMA featuring
Celebrating their eighteenth year, there’s always excitement when Ballet Black take to the stage. Led by Artistic Director Cassa Pancho, recent recipient of the Freedom of the City of London for her contribution to diversity in ballet, the company celebrates dancers of black and Asian descent. Ingoma (Song), created by Company dancer and choreographer Mthuthuzeli November is a fusion of ballet, African dance and singing. This premiere and Barbican co-commission portrays a milestone moment in South African history and imagines the struggles of black miners and their families in 1946, when 60,000 of them took courageous strike action. Ballet Black reprise Martin Lawrance’s ‘wickedly intelligent’ (The Guardian) Pendulum – an intimate duet which premiered in 2009 and the choreographer’s first work made for the company. Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the RSC, National Theatre, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions. I can’t forget the thrill of first appearing at Cambridge Arts Theatre when I was an undergraduate in The Marlowe Society productions. Alongside Derek Jacobi and other future professionals, I played in Shakespeare, Marlowe, Ibsen and Anouilh. Since, I’ve returned many times with the old Prospect Company, the Actors’ Company. Most recently I was in the audience to see one of Ken Dodd’s last shows. All tickets for the Arts Theatre include a £3 per-ticket booking fee. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre. Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By charging a booking fee we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity.

Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to most performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for over 65s, students, groups and schools. Please note there are no discounts on the lowest price seats and only one discount applies and all discounts are subject to availability. Please check with the Box Office at time of booking for available discounts.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOUR VISIT The safety and security of our patrons is of the utmost importance to us. Please take note of the below information regarding our bag policy. In the interest of customer safety the following items cannot be taken into the auditorium and must be stored in our cloakroom: Rucksacks or backpacks of any size, children’s rucksacks, handbags that can be worn as backpacks, handbags larger than 25cm x 35cm, shopping bags and large items such as holdalls and suitcases. We strongly urge you to leave all bags at home or in your car, where it is practical. If you bring them to the Theatre you will be asked to check them in to the cloakroom which is situated on the first floor past the Stalls Bar (Peas Hill entrance). Customers with access needs who wish to check in bags should make themselves known to the Duty Manager. Please allow sufficient time to travel to the Theatre and to allow for the additional delays this may cause. We recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

The Arts Theatre aims to care for every patron as an individual, on a one to one basis. There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 in Wheeler Street; 7 in King’s Parade and 36 in the Grand Arcade car park. If you have mobility requirements, please advise the Box Office when booking tickets so we are able to allocate you the correct space. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building. We have five house wheelchairs (including one electric) available for use during all performances subject to availability. We have a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system, designed to help DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING patrons both without hearing aids, and for those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are also able to provide headsets and personal induction loops. If you have never used one before, we recommend arriving at the Theatre early so that our Front of House staff can explain how they work. Some of our performances are BSL INTERPRETED. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
