Camberwell Grammar School is a leading independent school for boys. We are a learning community committed to ensuring that students discover their passions, develop a lifelong love of learning and have a commitment to making a positive contribution to the world around them. Staff and students work together to develop a supportive and inclusive school community which motivates young people to engage with and lead their communities — locally, nationally and internationally. Similar to the previous year, many of our normal activities were curtailed due to COVID-19, however the school still recorded impressive academic outcomes and high student satisfaction. This report is produced in accordance with the national compliance legislation and is also published on the Camberwell Grammar School website: www.cgs.vic.edu.au.

The Student Body

Student Attendance Parents/Guardians are requested to report reasons for student absence to the School. Teachers mark an electronic roll each period and the Administrative Officer identifies and determines the nature of any absence, records the details in the School’s administrative system, and makes class teachers aware of a student’s absence through subsequent class rolls. A daily student absence summary report is published on the School’s Intranet for all staff. Staff involved in the pastoral care of particular students liaise with parents if there are concerns regarding attendance. A summary of each student’s attendance is published to parents on their semester report, a digital copy of which is stored on the School’s Intranet.

Student Outcomes

“All 167 of our students who completed the year satisfactorily met the requirements of the VCE” Following another extraordinary year, again dominated by Coronavirus, lockdowns and restrictions in every aspect of our lives, it is my great pleasure to write to you with news of our VCE results for 2021. This year’s cohort had their education seriously impacted by two successive years of lockdowns, and while most of the State was in the same boat, we could not help but wonder just how our students may have been affected by the challenges they faced. It is, therefore, with a great deal of pride that I congratulate our Class of 2021 for their VCE results this year. All 167 of our students who completed the year satisfactorily met the requirements of the VCE, and we are very proud of them all. Their results are again impressive by any standards – given the conditions of this year, they are extraordinary. The 2021 Duces of our School were Wilson Zhu and Alex Lew, both of whom scored 99.90. Our Proxime Accessit was Isaac Hui, who scored 99.85. All three boys were actively involved in the full life of the School – although their opportunities were severely curtailed last year! – and worked very hard at their studies.

Ten percent of our students achieved an ATAR of 99 or better, placing them in the top one per cent of the State. Twenty two percent achieved a rank of 95 or better, and 40% of our students achieved a score of 90 or better, placing them in the top ten per cent of the State. Ninety-six per cent of our students were in the top 50% of the State. Our median ATAR score was 86.93. I am very proud of our students and what they were able to achieve in difficult circumstances and I know that our teachers are proud of them too. A further thirteen students earned scores of 99 or better. These boys also studied a wide range of subjects and also actively involved themselves in the life of the School: Anthony Cao, Luke Doblin (our School Captain), Andrew Ho, Jack Hu, Alastair Joshi, Zachary Lewis, Heny Pan, Nicholas Robinson, Samuel Schwenk, James Stambe, Eric Tang, Ken Weeraratne and Weihan Zhou. Student Destination

171 out of 172 students successfully completed their VCE at Camberwell Grammar School in 2021. Of these, 164 applied for tertiary courses and all but one VTAC applicant had received an offer following the conclusion of the second round. 75% of applicants received their first or second preference, and 87% of students received their third preference or higher. Students who did not apply for tertiary study were generally more interested in applying directly to vocational institutions where ‘Free TAFE’ is currently available.

The most notable difference between this year’s destinations and recent years is the widening gap between students offered places at Monash University (58) compared to those heading to the University of Melbourne (38). Monash has also attracted more of our highest achievers - 18 students ranked above 95 receiving places there compared to 15 to Melbourne. Combined, both institutions account for 58% of the offers received by the 2021 cohort, which is statistically lower than in recent years.

The following table highlights the fields of study that our Class of 2021 students intend to pursue this year. Management and Commerce continues to be the preferred field of study (26%) with Natural and Physical Sciences the second most favoured area (20%). Interestingly, when Health Sciences and Pure Sciences are combined the number

of students choosing Science generally exceeds the number choosing Commerce. Specifically, Psychology courses were preferenced higher and more frequently than previously, which may be a consequence of living through the pandemic. Undergraduate Law courses also regained favour with the 2021 cohort.

The School values staff satisfaction and wellbeing. Camberwell Grammar has an established Health & Wellbeing Program (CamberWellness) which focuses on improving physical and mental health. The School also offers its staff professional development opportunities, with set days put aside each year for further development and learning. All staff of the School are offered opportunities to broaden their knowledge and enhance their skills. Professional learning covers a variety of topics from role-specific, to leadership, to HR compliance training and more. All academic staff are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.

Parent and Student Surveys Parent Satisfaction The school surveyed parents in 2021 using question items designed by the Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority (ACARA). The survey was carried out electronically. Overall, 118 responses were received out of a possible 1300 students, giving a low return rate.

20 Junior School parents, 61 Middle School parents, and 69 Senior School parents responded (some parents have students in more than one section of the school).

Students rated the school highly on key indicators such as teacher expectations and being given the opportunity to do interesting things. Almost all students felt safe in the school, and the figure of 49% strongly agreeing with the statement ‘I like being at Camberwell Grammar School’

is especially heartening. Students indicated they receive helpful feedback from their teachers and that the school looks for ways to improve. The school will continue ongoing work with the pastoral care teams in 2022.
