THE SCHOOL Camberwell Grammar School was founded in 1886. It occupies a site of 10 hectares in the Melbourne suburb of Canterbury. The buildings comprise several former residences now converted to school use, along with purpose built classroom blocks, a gymnasium with an indoor swimming pool, a performing arts centre, computer centre and library resources building. There are two sports ovals, and the school uses a number of community grounds in the district.
PROGRAMME The school is committed to the promotion of high achievement in all areas. It has an excellent academic reputation, with nearly all Year 12 student leavers proceeding to university. The curriculum is comprehensive and is under regular review. While mathematics and science have been traditionally strong, languages, humanities, the expressive and visual arts and commerce are also well established. The teaching of Chinese was pioneered over forty years ago, and Latin still has a very secure place. Each boy participates in a wide range of co-curricular activities. Sport is played in the internal House competition and against other Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria. In addition, there are interstate and overseas sporting tours. A voluntary Cadet Unit and The Duke of Edinburgh Award programme are available to all boys in the Senior School. A special emphasis is placed on the performing arts. Music is particularly strong with orchestras and choirs at all levels and an ambitious concert programme. In addition, neighbouring girls’ schools are invited to participate in large choral works and dramatic productions.
ENROLMENTS The current enrolment of the school is 1354 boys from Pre-Preparatory to Year 12. The major entry point is Year 7, with others at Pre-Preparatory, Year 4, and Year 5. In June 2021, there are 221 boys in Junior School (Pre-Preparatory to Year 5), 428 in Middle School (Year 6 to Year 8) and 705 in Senior School (Year 9 to Year 12). There is a teaching staff of over 180.
PASTORAL CARE AND DISCIPLINE There are eight vertical houses in the Senior School and the Head of House, assisted by a team of Tutors, is responsible for the welfare, development and general involvement of each one of the boys in his charge. The Form Teacher plays a similar role in Middle School, with the Class Teacher being the key person in Junior School. There is a Student Services Office staffed by two registered psychologists, a careers guidance specialist and a Learning Support team.
The school has a long association with the Anglican Church. The Chaplains officiate at school services of worship and lead the Christian Education programme. The day-to-day discipline of the school is nurturing and based on mutual respect. We have high standards with regards to punctuality, presentation, self-discipline and courtesy.
THE WIDER SCHOOL COMMUNITY Parent involvement in school life is very active. There is a flourishing Parents’ Association and support groups that assist in the cafeteria and operate the second-hand clothing and book stores. Auxiliary bodies assist Cadets, Music, Skiing, Kayaking and the Library, and most sports. A Foundation plans major fundraising, and the Old Camberwell Grammarians’ Association runs sporting, cultural and social activities.
