Student Attendance Parents/Guardians are requested to report reasons for student absence to the School. Teachers mark an electronic roll each period and the Administrative Officer identifies and determines the nature of any absence, records the details in the School’s administrative system, and makes class teachers aware of a student’s absence through subsequent class rolls. A daily student absence summary report is published on the School’s Intranet for all staff. Staff involved in the pastoral care of particular students liaise with parents if there are concerns regarding attendance. A summary of each student’s attendance is published to parents on their semester report, a digital copy of which is stored on the School’s Intranet. Attendance data is forwarded to the Australian Government for Years 1 to 10 students biannually, during semesters 1 and 2.

Student Outcomes VCE Results 2018

All 169 of our students who completed the year satisfactorily met the requirements of the VCE and we are very proud of them all. The results are again very impressive across the full range of scores: twenty-three students (14%) achieved an ATAR of 99 or better, placing them in the top one per cent of the state. Thirty-one per cent of our students achieved a rank of 95 or better, while 50% of our students achieved a score of 90 or better, placing them in the top ten per cent of the State. Ninety-five percent of our students were in the top 50% of the State. Our median ATAR score was 90.1. These are again extraordinary results and I congratulate our students and their teachers for the hard work they did to achieve them. There were thirteen perfect study scores across a wide range of subjects: James Bickerdike (Physics), Jake Brown (Biology), Alan Chen (English), Joe Chen (English), Lachlan Doig (Mathematical Methods), James Gunasegaram (Mathematical Methods), Richard Han (English), Charles Li (Specialist Mathematics and Physics), Lucas Liu (Mathematical Methods), Oliver Papillo (Year 11) (Global Politics), James Saligari (English), Sepehr Tahmasebi (English). Twenty-three per cent of all study scores were 40 or above, which given that we tend to do the more ‘difficult’ VCE subjects is an excellent result.

This year the Duces of our School are Jake Brown and Sepehr Tahmasebi, both of whom scored 99.95. Our Proxime Accesserunt are Charles Li, Charles Huang, Anthony Stewart and Alan Chen, who each who scored 99.90. All six boys were clearly actively involved in the full life of the School and worked very hard at their studies. A further seventeen students earned scores of 99 or better. These boys also studied a wide range of subjects and actively involved themselves in the life of the School: Travis Barton, James Bickerdike, Ryan Campbell, Joe Chen, Jacky Chen, Christian Chene, Benjamin Chesler, Nick Goss, Richard Han, Matthew Kautsky, Ming Kim Low, Adam Moore, James Saligari, Michael Tan, WeiHoong Tan, Sam Xiao and Andrew Zhang. Congratulations once more to the Class of 2018 on their excellent results. It is pleasing to see that their hard work has been rewarded so generously. Student Destination The table below shows the destinations of the Class of 2018, with all those seeking an offer receiving one by the conclusion of the VTAC second round. Of the 12 students (7%) who received second round offers, half had rearranged their preference order with the other half receiving higher preferences. To date, 85% of applicants have received their first or second preference, with 92% receiving their third preference or higher.

there, compared to 19 to Monash. Six students have been offered Chancellor’s Scholarships to The University of Melbourne. Interestingly, RMIT and Swinburne (both dual sector institutions) continue to show incremental increases in the number of our students choosing them. Of the students who successfully applied to study interstate, three are known to have accepted offers to The Australian National University, with another two to study at The University of New South Wales as part of their ADFA training. Of the overseas applicants, one has accepted a sports scholarship to Rollins College, Florida U.S.A., another has been offered a position at Trinity College, Cambridge U.K. and an additional four still await the outcome of U.S. applications.

Together, Monash University (53) and The University of Melbourne (46) account for 60% of the offers received by the 2018 cohort. Although more students have chosen to study at Monash this year, Melbourne continues to attract our highest achieving students; 28 students with ATARs of 95+ were offered places

The table on the following page highlights the fields of study that students will be pursuing this year. Despite a decline in numbers compared to last year, Management and Commerce continues to top the list as the most popular area of study, accounting for 28% of offers. Both Natural and Physical Sciences and Society and Culture (Arts and Law) have returned to figures similar to two years ago, with 19% and 18% of offers respectively. Also noteworthy is the steady increase in the number of students selecting IT courses. 16

Parent, Student and Teacher surveys Parent Satisfaction The school surveyed parents in 2018 using question items designed by the Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority (ACARA). The survey was carried out electronically. Overall 485 responses out of a total possible 1300 students were received,

giving a good return rate. 80 Junior School parents, 196 Middle School parents, and 267 Senior School parents responded (some parents have boys in more than one section of the school).

Students rated the school highly on key indicators such as teacher expectations. Feedback was good but the school is working to improve that important aspect of a student’s education with new reporting

practices. Almost all students felt safe in the school and the figure of 49% strongly agreeing with the statement “I like being at Camberwell Grammar School” is especially heartening.

Staff Satisfaction

KEY FINDINGS INCLUDE:

The school surveyed all staff - teaching and non teaching - in 2018 using the company insync. 170 out of a possible 263 staff responded, giving a response rate of 65%. Alignment, how closely staff identify with and support the school’s goals and values, and engagement, the level of involvement and passion staff have for their work, were the main focus of this survey.

Alignment and engagement of Support Staff is in the top decile.

“ Staff feel a strong sense of pride and connection to the vision of the school;

they are committed to high standards of

performance and best practice in teaching.”

26

Alignment and engagement are both just outside the top quartile of the benchmark group of similar organisations.

Part-time employees are highly aligned and engaged. The survey identified several strengths in the school: staff feel a strong sense of pride and connection to the vision of the school; they are committed to high standards of performance and best practice in teaching; and they appreciate the favourable people practices the school provides. However, staff also identified a sense of high workload and poor work-life balance, and this is being addressed in 2019.
