Edition 29, 12 October 2018

From the Headmaster Welcome Back to Term 4 A very warm welcome back to all members of our learning community to Term 4. I hope that all families were able to spend some time together at home or away, and that our students were able to take the time to rest and to gather their strength for the big term which is ahead of us. I know that our Year 12 students will have been working hard to consolidate their studies in this final run-up to the end of year examinations. I am very grateful to the Year 12 teachers who made themselves available during this time to offer classes for their students, to meet with them individually and to mark work. I am also grateful to our Year 12 VCE Co-ordinator, Mr Marcus Jones and his VCE staff who arranged and supervised a full set of practice examinations in the last week of the break. These will enable our students to focus their final revision and to discover any gaps in their knowledge. I encourage them to make the most of every minute of the short time that is left to them. We wish them all the very best for their coming examintions.

Open Day The weather promises to be perfect again when we will be hosting our Annual Open Day tomorrow, commencing at 10:00am. Our Parents’ Associations have done a wonderful job once more in organising a range of activities and stalls for the day and I greatly appreciate the time and support they continue to give to our school. I appreciate our students who will act as ambassadors and guides for our visitors – they are our best advertisements. We will again be highlighting a range of academic and co-curricular offerings at Camberwell Grammar School and the usual concerts, and activities will occur. The day will conclude with our Cadet Passing Out Parade on the JTO, commencing at 1.00pm. A program for the day can be viewed here. Please make the time to visit us tomorrow with your sons and encourage them to act as your guide around their School. You are very welcome to come to see our new facilities, and visit our beautiful All Souls Chapel at the very centre of our school. There will be parking for parents and visitors on site on Saturday only through Gates 1 and 5. Please be conscious of our neighbour’s rights and amenity if parking in the local area, and I ask in particular that cars are not parked on grass nature strips or across the driveways of surrounding streets.

Mobile Muster at Open Day Towards2050 invites the School Community to pop over to W221 during the Open Day festivities. Amongst many things we will have a large Mobile Muster box set up. You can bring in your old phones, rechargers, headphones and phone batteries, and in one quick visit be rid of all that toxic waste. For more information on the Mobile Muster program click here. There is always a box set up in the Senior School Library, so you can bring your old phones in to be responsibly recycled at any time.

Debating

I had the privilege of opening the VCE Art and Design Exhibition last night. Our school has a very strong reputation across the state in this field and it was easy to see why at this show, where our most senior Art, Studio Art and Visual Communication and Design students displayed their folios. All credit must go to Mr David Williamson and his team of teachers who have inspired our students to such heights. I was very pleased to announce the winners of the Headmaster’s Acquisition Awards, which are made each year on this night. This year the awards were made to Luke Raszewski (VCD), David Zhou (Art) and Colin Chen (Studio Art). These works will be placed on permanent display in the School. The Senior Art Exhibition will be open on Open Day and I do encourage you to visit it.

Grandparents’ Day – Tuesday 30 October We warmly invite Grandparents of all present students to Grandparents’ Day on Tuesday 30 October. The day will begin at 10.00am with morning tea in the PAC, followed by a concert. Grandparents will then meet with their Grandson and be given a personal guided tour. The day will conclude at 12.30pm. Please encourage all Grandparents to visit us and to see the excellent work being done by our students. Booking details can be found in this flyer.

2019 Subject Selection Confirmation – Years 7 to 11 Planning for the 2019 timetable is now well underway and all parents should by now have received an email asking them to log in to the Parent Portal and confirm their son’s subject choices for next year. As the planning process continues subject changes will become more difficult to accommodate. If you have not already done so, I you urge you to check the information on the Parent Portal and contact relevant staff members if you would like changes made.

For Parents and Students in Years 7 to 12 - Parent Education Seminar A reminder that our next Parent Education Seminar “Teenagers, Alcohol and Other Drugs” will take place in the Camberwell Room, Sports Centre, Camberwell Grammar School at 7.00pm on Wednesday 17 October 2018. Our guest speaker will be Paul Dillon, who has been working in the area of drug education for the past 25 years. A founder of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia and a former school teacher, Paul continues to conduct drug information sessions and workshops for school students throughout Australia and overseas. His book for parents, Teenagers, Alcohol and Drugs was released in 2009. Paul regularly appears in the media and is regarded as a key social commentator, with interviews on television programs such as Sunrise, Today and The Project. Please let our Convenor Mr John Allen mja@cgs.vic.edu.au know if you are intending to come. Further information can be viewed here.

University of NSW, Australian Business School Economics Competition The University of New South Wales Australian Business School Economics Competition was held in May with over 8000 entries received from across Australia, and overseas. The multiple-choice format penalises students for incorrect answers, so careful judgement needs to be exercised with reference to which questions are attempted. Camberwell Grammar entered 111 students across Years 11 and 12, and achieved a total of 22 Credits, 4 Distinctions and 2 High Distinctions. Congratulations to Kevin Liu (Year 11) who was awarded a High Distinction and Nicholas Browne (Year 11) who in addition to receiving a High Distinction, was awarded the State Winner in the Junior Section. Kevin and Nicholas received their certificates and trophy at yesterday’s Assembly.

2018 National Chemistry Quiz In July, a group of Year 11 and 12 Camberwell Grammar School students were invited to participate in this year’s Australian National Chemistry Quiz. Each year, there are over 120,000 entries from over 1400 schools across Australia and overseas. This year Camberwell Grammar students achieved 35 High Distinctions, which places them in the top 10% of the State. In addition three of our students - Oliver Papillo, Richard Han and Adam Moore – received one of 20 badges award across Australia to students who each achieved perfect scores in the competition. Congratulations to the following students who received an Excellence Award for scoring in the Top 1% of the State and were awarded their certificates at yesterday’s Assembly:

Middle School Term 4 A warm welcome back to Term 4. I hope you all had a fantastic school holiday break and you are refreshed to take up all the opportunities that come your way this term. The school grounds are in beautiful condition, thanks to the tireless work from all of our grounds and maintenance staff who made the most of the three weeks without boys and staff onsite.

Open Day The first major event of the term is Open Day, which will be held tomorrow from 10.00am to 2.00pm. There are a vast array of activities to get involved in and boys are strongly encouraged to participate in at least three activities on the day. This is a compulsory day for all Middle School boys. I am especially excited and look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. Page 4

Holiday Activities Several of our Year 8 boys attended the Cadet Camp in the first weekend the holidays. The camp offered boys the opportunity to trial Cadets which runs in the Senior School as a Friday activity. Mr Shaun Burke, Ms Victoria Papaioannou and Mr Rob French led a very rewarding trip through Central Australia, which included some extensive community service in the Wanmarra Aboriginal Community in the George Gill Range, near Kings Canyon. The proceeds from the Year 8 Social will be going to support this community.

Summer Sport Training has commenced for our summer teams in preparation for the season ahead.

Year 8 Academic Challenge Day A team of Year 8 boys ventured to Kingswood College on Wednesday to compete in the Academic Challenge Day. Well done to team members Andrew Nguyen, Charles Lewis, Michael Alexander, Aneek Sengupta, Rafael Bird, Hamish Collett, Eugene Goh, Michael Hare, Mathieu Ly, Thomas Power and Caeden Yap.

Koala Kids BBQ On Wednesday 31 October, all Middle School boys will take part in the Koala Kids fun run. Boys will be seeking sponsors for this special day in a bid to raise valuable funds for this Charity. Koala Kids is a volunteer driven organisation that provides small things that make a difference to the lives of children and young people (birth to 25 years) in cancer treatment and their families. We would like parents to come and help with the BBQ. Please contact Mrs Justine Elliott in the Middle School Office if you are able to assist on mso@cgs.vic.edu.au or 9835 1777.

Inter-School Debating Middle School Debating closed on Wednesday evening with the final debates for the season. Hearty congratulations to all the boys who ventured outside their comfort zone to explore and discover important life lessons. Public speaking can be a challenging task at the best of time, but to develop a team line, coordinate a strategy and develop rebuttals on a whim, takes practice. By the end of the third debate, boys had this down-pat; some experiencing debating for the first time. I extend my gratitude to Mr Peter Robinson and all the Coaches who took on this additional responsibility on top of their very busy schedules. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School Welcome It was so good to have the boys back at school refreshed and excited about the term ahead. I was delighted to hear about their holiday adventures, some around home and others visiting distant lands. Either way, there were plenty of opportunities to have fun, learn new things and enjoy the company of family and friends. Term 4 is laden with opportunities for boys to demonstrate how much they have grown and mastered over the course of the year. There is no better feeling than completing the year knowing you have given it your best effort in terms of what you achieve and how you behave. I am sure the boys have thought carefully about their goals and aspirations for the term ahead. We are all looking forward to Open Day tomorrow and the opportunity to celebrate both what our school has to offer and those who make it what it is – the boys, teachers and parents. Open Day activities in Junior School commence at 10.30am with the String Ensemble on the Junior School Green. Throughout the day there will be performances by various Junior School music groups, as well as the opportunity to visit classrooms and enjoy the eats and activities. We are in for a grand day and I look forward to sharing it with you and your families. Boys are to be in school uniform, with summer uniform required for boys involved in performances.

Life Education As part of the Health curriculum, the mobile van from Life Education Victoria will be visiting the Junior School from Wednesday 17 October to Friday 19 October. During this time each class is scheduled to have a class lesson tailored to suit the needs of the students. Some examples of topics are healthy food choices, safety with medicines, passive smoking and issues relating to alcohol. A parent information session is being held on Wednesday 17 October 8.30am to 9.00am in the Life Education van. This session will enable parents to visit the Mobile Unit and see an audio-visual presentation that explains the topics discussed and the approach used by Life Education. These are extremely important, as the concepts introduced need to be reinforced both at home and at school. We hope you will join us for this session. If you are interested please fill in the sheet sent home with your child and return it as soon as possible as numbers are restricted. Caroline Gatley, Deputy Head, Curriculum

Walk to School Day and Health Morning Walk to School encourages kids to walk, ride or scoot to and from school. It is a great way to help students learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day. It also encourages primary schools, local councils and communities to make active travel easy, safe and accessible. Along with the health benefits, walking to school has benefits for the whole community. It reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and even saves the environment! There are so many great reasons to participate in Walk to School this October. Younger children are encouraged to walk with their parents and older children on their own (when their parents decide it’s safe). Parents who usually drive their sons to school can drop them just a couple of blocks from the school, or park the car a distance from the school and walk in with your sons and thereby also benefit from the exercise. October is a great time to start walking because Victoria’s fabulous spring sunshine makes it a pleasure to get out of the house, and the car! Camberwell Grammar Junior School Health morning and Walk to School Day is next Tuesday 16 October.

Summer Uniform Just a reminder that boys may choose to use the first month of Term 4 for a transition from winter into summer uniform. However, after the Melbourne Cup weekend, all boys must be in summer attire. Irrespective of summer or winter uniform, hats must be worn from the start of Term 4. ‘No hat no play’ is our sun smart policy.

Sport

Summer Sport is underway with training having begun this week. With Open Day this weekend, Round 1 of the AGSV season begins Saturday 20 October. While students were allocated to teams at the end of last term, they still have the opportunity to trial for higher tanked teams. In order to do so, they should communicate with the staff member of their allocated team and then attend the training session of the higher ranked team. Also, please remember to direct any sport enquiries to me at dos@cgs.vic.edu.au. Over the school holidays, some of the School’s volleyball players participated in the Maroondah Volleyball Tournament held on Saturday 22 September to Sunday 23 September. It was a tough two days playing with State volleyball teams and professional volleyball schools. The team fought valiantly and eventually came in fifth place. Well done to the team, which consisted of Gregory Kerdemelidis, Ming Han Low (Year 8), John Williams (Year 9), Frank Bite, Ming Jin Low (Year 10), Christopher Kyriakos, James Kocalidis (Year 11), Ming Kim Low and Sean Kennedy (Year 12). Congratulations to Brodie Carswell (Year 8) and Nicholas Gooden (Year 11) for being selected in Hockey Victoria’s U15 and U18 State Academy Program respectively for 2018-19. Our Sport programme will be on show tomorrow during Open Day, with staff and students involved in a variety of activities throughout the school. The Annual CGS Gift will be held on the JTO, along with the student versus Old Boys Hockey match. Old Boys will also play off against our First Tennis team in the morning at Deepdene Tennis Courts. Table Tennis and Fencing will be showcased on Level 4 of the Sports Centre, while the courts on Level 3 will host Basketball, Taekwondo, Volleyball and Badminton. The Cricket Development Squad are playing a Twenty20 against themselves on the KAO and will be followed by the chance to take Soccer penalty kicks. Also around the School, you will see a Football handball competition and a Baseball speed gun stall. Finally, the pool and the weights room will be full of action during the morning as well. For up to date information and to receive notification of what’s happening in Sport at the School, please download TeamApp via the App Store and follow @CamberwellSport via Facebook and Twitter. Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Music Biennial Concert Videos Videos of performances from our Biennial Concert at Hamer Hall are now available to view and download here. Watching these back in the Music Office this week, I am so proud of our entire school, and the huge collaborative effort that took place just over a month ago to bring these performances together. I hope that all boys and families enjoy reliving these moments as much as the Music Staff and I have over the past week.

Open Day Performances As usual, our musicians will be busy on Open Day performing in many different parts of the school. There will be performances almost all day in the Junior School, and the schedule for the Middle and Senior School is as follows: 11.00am Senior Orchestra in the Performing Arts Centre 12.00 noon Middle School Stage Band in the Angliss Atrium 12.00 noon Chamber Music Concert in the Chapel 1.00pm Cadet Parade, accompanied by the concert band on the JTO

New Music Stands The staff, boys and I were very grateful to receive a generous donation of $7,000 from the Friends of Performing Arts (FOPA) for a new set of music stands this week. These funds have been raised by a small but hard-working team of parents selling drinks at concerts and events, music satchels for students, and theatre tickets in recent months too. New members are always welcome, and FOPA will be out selling delicious pizza on Open Day.

Carol Choir We are currently gathering names for our annual Carol Service, to be held in St Mark’s Church on Wednesday 5 December. We have a limited number of places to be filled and encourage any boy who wishes to sing in this service to register his name at the Music Office ASAP. Ben Bishop, Director of Music
