Headmaster Examinations Remembrance Day Head of Bridgland

Twilight Concerto Concert Service of Nine Lessons and Carols Junior School Christmas Service

From the Headmaster Examinations I hope that you were lucky at the races, or more importantly were able to enjoy a restful day with your family or friends last Tuesday. Our Year 12 students continued to sit their examinations over the break, and reports so far suggest that they are feeling generally confident and that the papers have been fair. It has been a long and busy year, but now is the time to focus on the tasks remaining ahead, and for each boy to make the most of his opportunities to show off what he has learned this year. Examinations soon commence for the following year levels:

Edition 33, 9 November 2018

12 November 14 November 19 November

Year 11 Year 7 and 8 Year 9 and 10

Remembrance Day Sunday 11 November, marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which saw the end of the First World War. On Friday at 11.00am, we stood silent for a minute to remember all of those who have lost their lives in wars, and to commit ourselves to the cause of peace.

Head of Derham After 9 years of excellent leadership as the Head of Derham, Mr Matthew Christopher has decided to stand down from this position at the end of the year. He will then take over the co-ordination of the Friday Activities Program in the Middle and Senior School, and also the co-ordination of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, with a view of expanding it and developing other community services and entrepreneurial offerings to the students. I am very grateful for all that Mr Christopher has done for Derham and for the care that he has given to all of the students in the House. I am also pleased to announce that the new Head of Derham House will be Mr Teri Miriklis. Mr Miriklis, himself a past student of our school, has been a member of staff at Camberwell Grammar School since 2013 and is a well-respected teacher in the Physical Education Department. He is very enthusiastic about assuming this new role, and he will complete a full handover with Mr Christopher before the end of this year. Please join me in congratulating Mr Miriklis.

Twilight Concerto Concert The annual Twilight Concerto Concert will take place in the Performing Arts Centre at 6.00pm on Thursday 22 November. The concert features a number of our senior musicians performing solo work accompanied by a chamber orchestra of staff and students. Admission is free and the concert will conclude at approximately 8.15pm. I know that the students would appreciate a large audience.

A reminder to our school families that our Annual Carol Service will take place at 8.00pm on Wednesday 5 December in St Mark’s Church, Burke Road, Camberwell. Following the service, the Friends of Music are hosting a supper in the church hall and all members of the congregation are warmly invited to join us. This is a lovely way to end the school year and an opportunity to get together prior to Christmas. Please ensure that you arrive early at the church as this is always a well-attended occasion.

Junior School Christmas Service Parents and friends of our Junior School children are also warmly invited to attend St Mark’s Church, Burke Road, Camberwell on Thursday 6 December at 11.00am for the annual Christmas Service. This too is a very enjoyable service involving our younger students, and will be their final event for the school year.

The Athletics Victoria All School Championships were held over the weekend, with eight CGS athletes competing against the best from around the state at Lakeside Stadium. • At Under 14, Sebastian Beck (Year 7) finished second in both 100m and 200m, earning him a start at the National Championships in Cairns in December. He also jumped personal bests in Long Jump and Triple Jump. • Zac Matters (Year 6) crossed the line 4th, but was unfortunately disqualified for technique in the 3000m walk. • At Under 15, Hugo Akse (Year 8) finished 5th in Long Jump. • At Under 16, Jordan Liang (Year 9) just missed qualifying for the final in the 100m by 0.08 seconds , though his 11.92 seconds was a personal best. • Connor Assauw (Year 9) clear 1.60 m to finish 11th in the High Jump. • At Under 17, Tom Bowers (Year 10) continued his strong form, running a personal best of 4:16.8 to finish 7th in the 1500 m. He also qualified for the final of the 800m, but was beaten in a fast final, posting 2:01.07 to finish 8th. • At Under 20, Matthew McKenna (Year 11) ran a personal best of 52.98 seconds to finish 2nd in the 400m and 24.23 seconds to finish 4th in the 200m.

Hopefully the Squad can regain the Challenge Cup after being narrowly defeated last year. The Kayaking Squad take to the Yarra River on Sunday for their Paddle to the City event with Strathcona, MLC and Trinity students. It should be a great morning for both students and parents.

Summer Season Sport There are two more rounds of the AGSV Summer Season on Saturday 10 November and 17 November before the summer holidays. Training continues as normal during that time, even though examinations commence. Some sports have another round on Saturday 24 November. Students should check with the staff member associated with their team if they are unsure when their training finishes. It is important to remain active as this will help your cognitive function!
