Edition 35, 23 November 2018

From the Headmaster Year 12 Examinations Our Year 12 students have all now completed their examinations, and we wish them all the very best as we eagerly await their results on Friday 14 December 2018. We have heard that there were no major surprises on any of the examinations, and the teachers were most impressed by the work ethic the boys displayed in the weeks leading up to the examinations, so we remain cautiously optimistic!. Our Careers Counsellor, Mrs Lynette Reiger and other Senior Staff will be at School on Monday 17 December and Tuesday 18 December to offer assistance and counselling to students, should they wish, and to assist with any changes of preferences for University or other courses. Appointments can be made with Ms Jan Sangster on 9835 1777.

OCGA 60 Year Lunch Reunion On Wednesday 21 November we hosted a lunch in the Camberwell Room for Old Camberwell Grammarians who graduated at least 60 years ago. Over 50 people were in attendance, and it was tremendous to meet so many of our most senior community members once more. It was a lovely day for our Old Boys as they caught up with old friends and reminisced about their days at school. I am grateful for the initiative of the OCGA and for the work of Mr Ryan Whitehead and his Development Office team for their work in preparing this event.

Twilight Concerto Concert A very appreciative audience were delighted by a wonderful concert of Jazz and French classical music at our Twilight Concert last night in the Performing Arts Centre. Organised and led by Mr Chris Day, our Head of Brass, and Mr Robert Wakely, our Head of Strings, staff and students performed a wonderful concert, featuring some of our Year 12 students for the last time and climaxing with excerpts from Bizet’s second L’Arésienne suite. Thank you to all the staff for their inspiration and teaching; they are clearly promoting a love of music in our students.

University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Scholars We were delighted to learn that two of our Year 10 students, Rhys Campbell and Matthew Wu were successful in being awarded a Kwong Lee Dow Scholarship from the University of Melbourne which is an academic enrichment program designed to support high-achieving Victorian secondary school students. While still at School, the program offers opportunities for participation in workshops and seminars, and students will be able to interact with the University and with other Kwong Lee Dow Scholars.

Year 8 Kangaroobie Camp All Year 8 students will be spending next week at Kangaroobie near Port Campbell. The focus of the camp will be on the students’ transition from the Middle School to the Senior School, and current Form Room teachers and Senior Heads of House will be at the camp in order to assist with this transition. A number of next Year’s Senior Student Leaders will also be at the camp to help with the activities. All of these experiences enable each boy to discover more about himself and his fellow classmates. I look forward to seeing the boys in action when Mr Rob French and I visit the camp on Wednesday. I am grateful to the teachers who give up time with their families to be with the students, and particularly to Ms Kirsty McDougall who has coordinated the program.

Middle School Farewell to Year 8 and Church Service It has been a special few days as we farewelled the Year 8 boys from Middle School this week. We enjoyed our Advent service at St Mark’s this morning, with the Middle School section of the Carol Choir performance proving a highlight. This was the final time that our three year levels would come together as a Middle School, so it proved to be a special occasion.

House Competition The House Competition this year was designed and administered by Ms Kirsty McDougall. Throughout the course of the year, boys in Year 6, 7 and 8 played together in a variety of games. It was a great opportunity to exercise teamwork, leadership and skill. Sport Report Our First XI Cricket team had an excellent win against Peninsula last weekend. After a shaky start, Camberwell steadied thanks to exceptional bowling from Ned Bennett (Year 10) who took 5 wickets and helped bowl out Peninsula for 165 runs. Camberwell started strongly, thanks to solid batting from Lachlan Melville (Year 11), Charlie Harper (Year 11) and Vihaan Narayana (Year 11) who finished with 63 runs. Much to the enjoyment to all those playing and spectating, Camberwell passed Peninsula’s target with 6 overs to go to keep the team’s finals chances alive. The 8A Tennis team had a loss against an undefeated Marcellin on the weekend. After a solid start in the doubles, the scores were tied to start the singles matches. Unfortunately, Marcellin were able to gain control of the contest and win all 8 single matches despite the best efforts of Thomas Cross (Year 7) and Keelan Hale (Year 7). The team will now have the summer break to practice and prepare their game to get a more favourable result when they play Marcellin again early next year. The 4th Blue tennis team had an unlucky draw on Saturday in an intra-school clash against Camberwell Gold, the scores finishing 5 sets 34 games apiece. The boys participated in some high-quality matches and showed some promising improvement after specialist coaching from Peter Owen. Samuel Qi (Year 10) and Tory Crosgrove Year 10) starred as both the doubles and singles matches were played in great spirit and produced an intense contest to finish the day. The First V Basketball had a good win against a talented Peninsula at home. After a very tight opening, Captain Jack Amling (Year 11) and Taran Laurence (Year 10) led the way in a strong 4th quarter to enable Camberwell to run away with the win by 17 points. This win puts the team at 2-2 for the season, putting them in a good position to make the finals for the second straight year. Page 4

Farewell to Year 8 and Church Service House Competition End of Year Arrangements

The 9A cricket team continued their dominant form after a convincing win against Yarra Valley on Saturday. The team bowled first and from the start the team applied pressure and kept the run rate down. Great bowling performances from Mitch Horn (Year 8) (4/2 off 4 overs) and Caleb Smith (Year 8) (2/10 off 4 overs) meant the opposition were constricted to only 68 runs. Despite an early top order collapse, Ed Harper (Year 8) and Luke O’Brien (Year 8) were able to salvage 16 and 27 respectively to see the team get a solid win before the summer holidays. Congratulations to all boys on a successful first half of the Summer Sport season and good luck to any boys competing over the summer break. With most sport now completed for the year, it would be great to see as many boys as possible get down to support the First Basketball, Cricket and Tennis teams who still have games this weekend. I hope you all have an enjoyable and relaxing summer holiday and we will be ready to go again in the first week back in 2019!

Cycling Squad Last weekend, the Cycling Squad took to Casey Fields for Round 1 of the Victorian Interschool Cycling Series. There were many encouraging performances throughout the day, highlighted by Zac Kelly’s (Year 9) win in the Senior Male A division. In the 6 lap 13.2km race, Zac averaged a remarkable 41.4km/hr! Other notable achievements came from Charlie Reid-Pettett (Year 7) and Marcus Liew (Year 7) who finished 2nd and 4th respectively in the Junior Male B division. The Squad continue to train ahead of the next event at the Kew Teardrop on Saturday 8 December.

Last Weekend’s Squash Results

Dates Ahead

It was a mixed week for the Camberwell Grammar Squash brigade, with 2 convincing wins, 2 narrow loses and a tough loss for the 1sts. Camberwell won 11 rubbers and 28 games over 3 fixtures. Kai Sapolu (Year 8) was a standout in the 2nds. The performances of the round came from the 3rds and 5ths who both won their respective games 5 – 0. The 5ths, consisting of Alex Shen (Year 11), Campbell Brown (Year 11), Nathan Zhao (Year 11) and Harry Shen (Year 11), have been improving all season and this is demonstrated by their recent results. The 3rds had it tough this week with only two players, which meant three games for both players. Yet with true Camberwell Grammar Spirit, Linus Opat (Year 11) and Oliver Powell (Year 10) won all of their games.
