Edition 76, 7 February 2020

From the Headmaster Parents’ Association Start of Year Social Functions The last of the Parents’ Association Welcome Back Drinks will be held this evening, parents of students from the Senior School will gather in The Camberwell Room in the Sports Centre. Thanks again to the Parents’ Association and to the Development Office for organising and hosting these functions. I have appreciated the opportunity to welcome parents from the various year groups of the School to a new School Year.

Scholarship Examinations Tomorrow morning, we will be holding scholarship examinations at School. Over three hundred students have registered for these examinations including some of our own students. We wish them all well, recognising that only a very few candidates will be awarded a scholarship, and that examination results do not define one’s worth as a person.

Year 11 Student and Parents Information Evening   Next Monday, 10 February, we will be holding the Year 11 Student and Parents Information Evening in the Performing Arts Centre commencing at 7.30pm. The purpose of the evening is to provide an explanation of the structure, procedures and rules of the VCE, and to suggest some strategies which will help to make this year successful in every sense.

Year 7 and 10 Immunisations Year 7 HPV and Boostrix (Diptheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough) immunisations and Year 10 Meningococcal ACWY will take place next Thursday 13 February in the Camberwell Room, commencing at 9.30am. Consent cards have been sent home and were due back yesterday. Please ensure that you have completed and returned your son’s consent card, even if your son is not being immunised. The goal is to have 100% of consent cards returned, ensuring all Year 7 and 10 students have been offered the opportunity of free vaccinations at School.  The Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009, states that Principals are now authorised to release student and parent/guardian contact details to local Council Immunisation Services for the purpose of delivering the secondary school vaccine program when requested to do so. Please contact our Co-ordinator of School Health, Mrs Rhonda Nicholson on 9845 1777 or at shc@cgs.vic.edu.au if you would like further information on our Immunisation Program.

2020 Australian Government Student Residential Address Collection The Australian Government Department of Education is seeking to confirm the current residential addresses of our students and their parents/guardians to assist in their determination of funding arrangements. We are required to provide you with a copy of the Data Collection Notice which can be found here. Many of you will have received a request from me earlier this month to complete, sign and return the School’s Administrative and Medical Information Form. This current request from the Department is in addition to, and does not replace, that earlier request from me. If you have moved address recently and have not yet advised the School of your current address, could you please contact our Student Records Office on 03 9835 1777 or sro@cgs.vic.edu.au no later than close of business Friday 21 February 2020. No action is required by you in relation to this data collection notice. If you have not however, returned your completed and signed Administrative and Medical Information Form, could you please do so at your earliest opportunity.

Victorian Under 20 Basketball Team Congratulations also to Ellis Biggar (Year 12) who has been invited to represent the Victorian Under 20 Basketball Team in the Australian Junior Championships being held in Canberra this week. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Middle School Settling In Well done on getting through the first full week! I’m sure it was good to get into more of a routine. New students (and staff) are starting to find their way around the School, although it will take some time to become more settled. A Middle School Handbook has been distributed to families by email.

Meet the Form Teacher Many thanks to parents and staff who made themselves available last Wednesday night for the meet and greet sessions. It is always good to know what motivates your sons so that we are in a better position to partner in their learning. I encourage Parents to communicate with their Form Teachers throughout the year.

Curriculum Information Evening On Tuesday 11 February, Mr Scott Wyatt, Deputy Head of the Middle School, will be hosting a Middle School Curriculum Information Evening, commencing at 7.00pm in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC). The presentation is largely directed at families new to the Middle School and will help parents to better understand some of the intricacies within the curriculum and how to best partner with the School in the boys’ learning. Topics covered will include: Curriculum, Learning Management System, Formative and Summative Assessments, Homework, Pastoral Care, Reporting, and much more. To RSVP to the Middle School Curriculum Evening please visit the Trybooking page here.

Year 8 Outdoor Education Program The Outdoor Education Program for Year 8 students begins in Week 3. Given the limited places, we cannot guarantee that students will get their first preference. Information was made available on Schoology prior to the selection day last Tuesday. The options on offer this Term include: • Horse Riding • Indoor Rock Climbing • Off-Road Bike Riding • Rowing • Sailing • White Water Kayaking Any queries regarding Outdoor Activities or Camps can be directed to Ms Kirsty McDougall kem@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Year 8 Surf Camp Perfect conditions greeted our Year 8 students as they ventured to Torquay, Anglesea and Ocean Grove for the Annual Surf Camp. The camp proved to be an extremely positive bonding experience for all involved and I congratulate the students on the enthusiasm and courage they demonstrated. We had a mix of students trying surfing for the first time, with several others well accustomed to the breaks in the area. Regardless of their ability level, it was great to see the students helping their mates. Many managed to stand up on surfboards for the first time and the educational sessions around water safety were most valuable. Thursday night activities included the infamous ‘Ga Ga’ Ball, soccer, card games and guitar solos. Many thanks to Mrs Kirsty McDougall for organising an excellent few days and to the Year 8 Form Teachers and accompanying staff who looked after the students so well.

Absentees Email Contacts Please email absentees to attendance@cgs.vic.edu.au. Whilst we encourage as little disruption to students’ attendance during the School Term as possible, requests for longer-term planned absences should be directed to the Middle School Office at mso@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Year 7 Immunisations Year 7 immunisations will be held next Thursday 13 February. Please note that Year 7 students are encouraged to wear House Sports Uniform (house polo and shorts or tracksuit) to assist with the immunisations. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School

It is great to be back in session and if the enthusiasm of the students and staff is anything to go by, we are in for a splendid year. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet and greet students and parents as they made their way into School on the first day and I look forward to enjoying the year with you and your sons. I also extend a special welcome to all new students and their families. It won’t be long before the students Page 2

feel settled and have a real sense of belonging at their new School. At the conclusion of our Opening Assembly last Thursday, the students lined the footpath leading to the Junior School and greeted the new staff and students with a handshake and a welcome. In the words of the song “Consider Yourself” sung at the Assembly, the students can “consider themselves well in”.

Photo Day On the morning of Wednesday 12 February, the Junior School class, individual portraits and family photographs will be taken for students in Prep, Years 1, 2, 3, and Year 5. The photos for students in Year 4 will be taken on Wednesday 11 March. Students are asked to ensure they are particularly neat and tidy for these photos. Correct summer uniform with the shirt as the outer garment is required. Please refer to page 24 of the ‘Information for Parents 2020’ booklet for the School policy on hair and jewellery. Students with brothers will have a family photo. If all siblings are in Junior School you do not need to do anything, a family photo will be taken. For siblings in Middle School and Senior School you should have already returned a booking slip in order to ensure these students are able to leave their class. Unfortunately, if your son is late or absent on this day we cannot re-schedule photographs but you will still receive a class photo.

2020 Junior School Parent - Teacher Meetings Wednesday 19 February, 3.40pm to 9.00pm Thursday 20 February, 3.40pm to 6.00pm On these two evenings there will be an opportunity for you to meet with your son’s Classroom Teacher, Specialists and Support Staff. The purpose of this introductory interview is to provide an opportunity for you to meet your son’s teachers and to share important information about your son. As this is the first occasion new families have had to meet with Specialists, we request that unless you are a new family to CGS Junior School or have a pressing issue to discuss, you do not book an interview with specialists. You would have received an email this week explaining how parent/teacher interviews can be booked on-line from 2.00pm next Monday 10 February until 2.00pm on Monday 17 February. These meetings are for parents only however if as a last resort you need to bring your Junior School boy or siblings we request they are adequately supervised or quietly occupied outside classrooms during interview times. Please note, due to Government regulations, students who are not booked into Aftercare cannot join this group in outside play. As the Library is used for interviews it is also unavailable. Parking is available in front of Kingussie, in Pre-Prep parking at this time and through Gate 3 to the underground car park.

Sport

Sport is well and truly underway for the year and, although last weekend’s round was affected by rain, it was a delight to see our students back in the double blue. This weekend we welcome the Year 7s for their first round of competition. We wish them every success throughout their journey in Sport for the School. We also celebrate the Summer Round of the Centenary of AGSV Sport this weekend. Firsts Cricket and Firsts Tennis played their matches on Thursday. In fixtures against Ivanhoe Grammar, Cricket successfully retained the Alan Graham Cup, while Firsts Tennis played valiantly but were beaten. Firsts Basketball and Firsts Volleyball play on Friday, also against Ivanhoe. Students and parents are encouraged to visit a display in the Camberwell Room, highlighting Camberwell Grammar’s involvement and rich history in the AGSV over the last 100 years. There will be commemorative mini-cupcakes too! Members of the Triathlon squad competed in Race 4 of the 2XU Triathlon Series last Sunday. Dr Smith wrote the following report: Following the tropical start to the weekend and the subsequent rains, Port Phillip Bay was deemed unsafe for swimming which resulted in the Elwood triathlon becoming a duathlon. The duathlon distances for the Fun category were 800m run, 10k bike and 3km run. In the 12-13 age group, Ross Sykiotis, Will Watson (Year 7) and Ryan Humphries (Year 8) all put in a strong performance, especially considering their dominant ability Page 3

is usually in the swim leg. However, triathletes that were stronger on the bike and run took full advantage in the absence of the swim. Marcus Liew’s (Year 9) strong cycling ability produced an impressive 16th overall in the large competitive field of the 14-16 age group. Equally, Freddie Askew (Year 9) produced his highestplaced finish of the season thus far finishing just behind Billy Swingler (Year 10). Several of the triathletes are very close in ability with less than 90 seconds separating four students following 40 minutes of racing! A special mention goes to the first-timers, Harrison Haintz, Benjamin Carlisle (Year 10) and Ross Sykiotis (Year 7) whom all did exceptionally well in their first event and will only continue to improve in future races. Triathlon Captain, Alex Lew (Year 11) raced in the longer Spring distance with a 1.6k run, 20k ride and a 5k run. Despite a fall at the very start of the race followed by some quick medical attention he was able to re-start again. Division Name

Sport Report Due to inclement weather, Round 6 was interrupted for many of our teams. Sheltered from the elements, the First V Basketball team headed to the Peninsula with strong spirits, keen to push for a final’s appearance. The match began with energising performances off the bench from Charlie Amling (Year 12). His persistent defence was reinforced by the relentless efforts of David Mutavdzija (Year 11). As Peninsula drew within a few points, Ollie Spalding (Year 12) seized back control with contributions to the scoreboard, inspiring others to lift their game and allowing Camberwell to win 43-39.  Looking to move their way up the AGSV ladder, Camberwell’s First XI faced Peninsula. From the outset, Camberwell’s opening bowlers Connor Laird (Year 10) and Nic Graves (Year 9) bowled tight lines and kept the runs to a minimum. Laird was the first to strike, thanks to a fine catch in slips by Joshua Pollocks (Year 12). Nic Graves then almost took the wicket off the dangerous Peninsula batsmen, who appeared to edge behind by Jordan McCleery (Year 11). In a show of sportsmanship, Ned Bennett (Year 12) thought that the decision was incorrect and recalled the batsman to resume his innings. During the short intervals of play between regular showers, captain Ned Bennett was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets. Connor Laird and Lachlan Ross (Year 10) also took one apiece. The game was eventually called off with Peninsula on 6/157. Camberwell’s First Squash side faced the Westerfolds team. Keen to assert themselves early on, Kai Sapolu (Year 10) began well, winning his singles with ease. Team captain Arman Cakmakcioglu (Year 12) fought bravely in his singles matches but lost in a tight three-setter. Jake Ford (Year 10) and James Thorn (Year 12) followed up with equally close matches in their singles, both emerging victorious two games to one. Kai and Jake then teamed to triumph in a close doubles match, winning two games to one as the team secured the win.  Congratulations to Zac Kelly (Year 11), who competed over the summer break in the Australian Road Cycling Championships held at Ballarat. Zac won bronze in the U19 Men Federation University time trials over 18.8km.  This week’s round of the AGSV Summer season has been designated as the Centenary Round as we celebrate 100 years of competition. A display commemorating the growth and development of the association, along with Camberwell’s history of sport can be found in the Camberwell Room. All students and parents are encouraged to come along this Saturday to enjoy the display, along with cupcakes which will be on offer. We wish our teams all the best. Firsts XI Cricket and Tennis play on Thursday, whilst Basketball and Volleyball competing on Friday. Camberwell will be hosting our own undefeated side in the Table Tennis part of the centenary round on Saturday.   Good luck to all those competing! Tom Bowers, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport
