From the Headmaster

Welcome back to the 2020 School year. A special welcome to all of you who are new to Camberwell Grammar School, and I hope that you will all feel very much a part of our learning community very soon.

Flexischools – Cashless Payments

I recognise that many of our students who had been looking forward to returning to School this week have had to postpone this for two weeks, as they have recently travelled back from China. I would like to thank those students and families, for your support and understanding in helping to ensure that everyone in our community remains as safe and healthy as possible, as novel coronavirus outbreak across the world increases in severity. We look forward to them rejoining our community as soon as they are able.

Term Dates 2020

All staff members at the School attended two intense but very productive Professional Development Days earlier this week, and we welcomed the students yesterday. As always seems to be the case the hot weather appeared just in time for School! It has already been a busy first week! Last night we hosted an Information Evening and a Welcome Back drinks for Junior School parents, and tonight we have our welcome back drinks for Middle School parents in the Camberwell Room in the new Sports Centre at 6.30pm. Our Senior School Welcome Back Evening will also be held at the same venue on Friday 7 February commencing at 6.30pm. These functions are an excellent way to meet other parents and to discover important information about the year ahead. I am very grateful the members of our Parents’ Association who organise and host our welcome back functions each year. We value greatly the support we receive from our parent support groups and I thank them for the warm welcome they extend to all families at the beginning of each year.

Uniforms and Presentation At the beginning of each new School year I ask for the support of our parents in ensuring that all students are properly attired, and that their hair is neat and tidy and in keeping with the guidelines set out from pages 24 and 25 of our School Diary. I ask those few students who need to take some action about their hair, shoes, socks or belts to do so as a matter of urgency. It may be that some boys are asked to return home until they are able to get an appropriate haircut. Heads of House will be the final arbiters of what is considered ‘appropriate’! Our students have an excellent reputation in the community for the way that they wear their uniform and I am keen to ensure that we maintain this. I would also like to remind parents that it is important that the correct School sports uniform is worn when having a Physical Education lesson or competing in sporting events (p.26/27 in the School Diary). Our students represent us in the way they behave and also in the care they take with their appearance.

When our students compete with students from other schools in sporting competitions and it is important that we give a very good impression.

Flexischools – Cashless Payments for the School Cafeteria in 2020 In 2020, families of students in the Middle and Senior School will be able to use a Flexischools account to enable their sons to use their School issued ID cards for cashless transactions in our School Cafeteria. Families in our Junior School currently use Flexischools to arrange lunch orders and payment. Please refer to the attached flyer for further information. If you are interested in reading more about Flexischools then please access this link.

Food Allergies and Anaphylaxis We take our responsibilities for students with food allergies and anaphylaxis very seriously. We aim to approach allergy and anaphylaxis in a proactive manner and all our staff are trained in anaphylaxis management and this is updated each Semester. While we make every endeavour to make the School a safe environment for students with food allergies, we do not claim to be a ‘nut free’ School. Rather, we are ‘nut aware’. The food prepared in our Cafeteria does not contain nuts, however there may be a risk of cross contamination with food prepared offsite. If your son is unsure of the ingredients in a food product, please ask him to approach the Cafeteria staff as they have a daily record of the ingredients used in the on site food preparation. We also acknowledge the presence of other food allergens besides nuts. The vending machine in the Sports Centre also contains products that contain nuts, so we urge parents of boys with food allergies to remind their son to read the packaging on these products before eating them. Student specific EpiPens/Action Plans and our spare EpiPens are stored in an unlocked cupboard in the Student Health Centre and there are other EpiPens located in the Music School Office, Senior Common Room, Library, Sports Centre and Cafeteria. In the Junior School, EpiPens and Plans are kept in the relevant classrooms and at Junior School Reception.

Year 7 and 10 Immunisations On Thursday 13 February, Year 7 students will be immunised for HPV (Gardisil9) and Boostrix (Diptheria, Tetanus and Whooping Cough – dTpa ) and Year 10 will be immunised for Meningococcal ACWY (Nimenrix). Consent cards were given to students on the first day of Term and also mailed to students who are absent from School, which need to be returned by Thursday 6 February. Please complete and return the card even if your son will not be immunised. Students are immunised by Nurses from the City of Boroondara Immunisation Service and their details are recorded by them for your future reference. If you would like further information on how we manage anaphylaxis and food allergies at School or information on our Immunisation Program, please contact our Co-ordinator of School Health, Mrs Rhonda Nicholson on 9845 1777 or at shc@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Virtual Tour of our School On Thursday 13 and Friday 14 February our School will be filmed and photographed by Virtual Tour company YouTour. This footage will be used only on our website so visitors can view our facilities and classrooms. No student in particular will be featured, rather classrooms and common areas will be filmed at various times of the day with students utilising them. An example of how the footage will be displayed can be viewed on their website here: https://www.youtour.com.au. If you do not want your son to be filmed during this time, please email our Marketing Manager, Mrs Jade Dolling, on pub@cgs.vic.edu.au with your son’s name and year level.

Grammarian The Grammarian was distributed after yesterday’s Assembly, and students should have brought home one copy per family. All 2019 Year 12 students will be posted a copy of The Grammarian. If your family did not receive a copy, please pick one up from the Development Office. Many thanks to Mrs Jade Dolling for the excellent work she does each year to produce such a wonderful memento of our School year. An online version can be viewed and downloaded here.

Academic Excellence and Scholars of the School At the end of each Semester Years 10 and 11 students are awarded Certificates of Academic Excellence on the basis that their academic results place them in the top 10% of their Year Group based on their results at the end of each Semester and Academic Scholars (Year 12) - awarded to the top 10% of the year level, based on Semester 2, 2019 results. Lyrebird Awards Congratulations to Declan Collett (Year 8) who at the end of last year won “Best Comedic Performance in a Play” in the Lyrebird Awards for his portrayal as Dill Harris in 2019’s Middle School Production To Kill a Mockingbird. He was up against students from all around the state from 38 different schools, and most of the other nominees were Year 12 performers. Congratulations also to Mr Drew Stocker, Head of Drama and Theatre Studies for “Best Sound Design” for Hamlet. The play also won “Most Outstanding Technical Design”. Also, a very deserving award was presented to Mrs Jennifer Bennie who won “Best Costumes” for Twelve Angry Men. The play also won a Judge’s Award for “Best Characterisation and Ensemble Work”.

Mathematics Assistance We will again provide regular after-hours Mathematics assistance to any boy who would like additional assistance with their mathematics. A Mathematics Teacher will be available every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3.30pm to 4.15pm in W318, in the Wheelton Centre commencing Week 2. The after-school classes provide an opportunity for boys to speak to a Mathematics teacher, not necessarily his own one, about any issues of concern or to have a difficulty cleared up on a one to one basis. These after School classes are not just for those for whom Mathematics is customarily a difficult subject. They are for boys of all levels of ability in Years 9, 10, 11 or 12 to use whenever they would like additional individual assistance. The Middle School also offers morning Mathematics assistance. Lunchtime assistance can also be arranged by students with their teachers. If your son would like assistance with any aspect of his studies, please encourage him to contact his Subject or Form Teacher to facilitate this process.

Cabrini Malvern’s Emergency Department Camberwell Grammar School have entered into an agreement with Cabrini Malvern’s Emergency Department, who will provide any student attending Camberwell Grammar School with a 50% discount on their attendance fee, a saving of $250. The offer does not include any further expenses such as X-rays and blood tests. Also, should your son need to be admitted to hospital, he will require private health cover. This offer will cover your son 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Further information is available on this flyer.

Term Dates 2020 Term dates for 2020 have now been finalised and details are given in the box below. I do respectfully ask that all School families take these into account when planning overseas and interstate trips during 2020. Whilst it is unavoidable that, from time to time, some parents do have to ask permission for their sons to leave early at the end of a Term or arrive late at the beginning of a new Term, it is so much better if students have the minimum absence from School so that they can benefit as fully as possible from the teaching program. Start of the Year Welcome back to all parents and boys for the 2020 School year. Whilst we all spare a thought for those affected by the ongoing drought, fires and flooding, we are also reminded of the steel of the Australian character. The generous acts of kindness toward strangers and animals in need has reinforced the power we all have to make a difference. This is very much a part of the culture that exists at CGS and I hope it quickly becomes apparent to those joining us in 2020. We also spare a thought for those who have quarantined themselves and sacrificed their start to the School year for the safety of their families and our community. We are most grateful and will ensure that your sons are not left behind. I congratulate all of our new boys on the poise and maturity with which they approached the start of their Camberwell Grammar journey. I trust that this is the start of a long and successful association with the School. Those who are feeling a little overwhelmed in the early stages need to know that they are not alone and time spent outside their comfort zone will reap rewards in the near future.

Friday Afternoons This Term, we are focusing on House Athletics and House Competition Round Robins as part of our Friday Afternoon Program. Finishing times will vary depending on the activity. For instance as per the timetable, today we will be finishing School at 3.20pm, following House Meetings. Finishing times for the Term were sent out in a letter that went home last week and is also available on the School Portal.

Annual Student Photos Individual portrait photos will be taken on Wednesday 5 February. We have delayed the form photos to include those who have delayed their start to School, and we will be able to take their individual photo at the same time as the form photos. Boys will need their blazer on this day. Please refer to the School’s policy on page 16 of the student diary regarding neat and tidy haircuts.

Year 8 Camp All Year 8 boys will have access to an online form which includes camp information and parental consent, for the overnight Surf Camp. Next week’s camp provides the boys with a wonderful opportunity to bond with their new classmates and Form Teacher. The beachside locations are idyllic, and the activities are always incredibly popular, with the surf lessons a major highlight. It is imperative that these forms are completed online and submitted as soon as possible.

Start of the Year

Welcome Back Drinks I am hoping to see many of our Middle School parents at our Welcome Back Drinks which is held tonight in the Camberwell Room, commencing at 6.30pm. The evening is very relaxed and provides a great opportunity to connect with the Middle School community.

Uniform Requirements in Term 1 I informed the boys this morning about uniform requirements in Term 1. The blazer is optional except on special occasions such as next week’s photograph day on Wednesday 5 February. All boys are encouraged to wear a cap or hat at recess and lunchtime unless they are playing in the shaded Atrium area. The boys should also wear their hats when they have PE lessons or Sport training sessions. The boys are permitted to wear PE uniform to School if they have PE in the first two periods of the day. They can go home in their sports uniform on days when they have PE classes in the afternoon or Sports training after school. Also note that in extreme heat, boys will be permitted to remove ties. This option will be communicated through a notice from the Head of Middle School at recess on that day. Boys must store their ties in their lockers to help prevent losing them.

Year 7 Sports Orientation Morning The Year 7 Sports Orientation Morning will take place this Saturday 1 February at 10.30am in the Performing Arts Centre, followed by sports trials for Basketball, Cricket, Swimming and Tennis. The trials should be completed by 12.00 noon.

Year 6 and 7 Meet the Form Teacher Next Wednesday 5 February parents can meet the form teacher from 4.00pm to 8.30pm in the boy’s Form Rooms in the William Angliss Building. Those who have recently travelled to China will be sent communication regarding their opportunity to do the same soon.

Year 8 Outdoor Education

Year 8 Outdoor Education

This program begins for Year 8 in Week 3. Boys will have the opportunity to select two options throughout the year. One in Term 1, the other in Term 3. Given the limited places, not all boys will get their first preference. Information will be made available on Schoology prior to the selection day next Tuesday at 8.30am in Form Period. This will be advertised to boys next week. The options are: • Horse Riding • Indoor Rock Climbing • Off-Road Bike Riding (Basic) • Rowing • Sailing • White Water Kayaking Queries regarding Outdoor Ed or Camps can be directed to Ms Kirsty McDougall at kem@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Junior School Welcome Back Welcome to the new School year! I extend a special welcome to all new boys and their families. It will not be long before the boys feel settled and have a real sense of belonging at the School. I look forward to working together to develop the home/school partnership that enables our boys to realize their very best. A key to our success is keeping the channels of communication open. The Weekly Bulletin is sent each Friday by email to all families. The Bulletin is our way of letting you know what has and what will be happening around our School. Additionally, each Junior School class has a web page, accessed through the parent portal, that allows us to share the daily life of the classroom, the boys and their achievements, as well as providing information and resources for parents. Please make a point of visiting the web page regularly. We will also send home notices related to School events and excursions. Your attention to these and prompt return of any reply slips is greatly appreciated. Lost notices related to School events and excursions can also be accessed through the website. The other prime means of communication is the student diary, which is a good means of getting a message to or from School. We ask that it is checked and signed daily. Let’s stay connected as we enjoy this year together. The new construction at School is another exciting development and comes with its own set of challenges. I know you would have all read my Start of Year Letter and the Traffic Letter, so you will know how important it is to display your name sign, arrive at the right time – being early for Years 3 and above causes congestion - or maybe look for opportunities to ease the congestion by dropping off your son and having him walk some of the way.

Sport

Welcome to another year of Sport at Camberwell Grammar. The AGSV Summer Sport season recommences immediately with matches being played this weekend for all students other than the Year 7s. It is fantastic to see the Year 7s and other new students at the School and we wish them well in their sporting endeavours in the variety of sports on offer. This year, we celebrate the Centenary of AGSV Sport. Firsts teams will play midweek matches on Thursday (Cricket and Tennis) and Friday (Basketball and Volleyball), while a special Summer Sport round will take place on Saturday 8 February. A display will be set up in the Camberwell Room with memorabilia and paraphernalia showcasing Camberwell Grammar’s involvement in the AGSV over the last 100 years. Be sure to come along to view and experience the School’s history, as well as a special Centenary cupcake. Over the holidays, Ryder Cheesman (Year 8) represented Victoria Metro Navy in the Under 14 Southern Cross Challenge Basketball tournament. Ryder excelled, top scoring in both the semi-final and grand final, and his team won the championship. William Watson (Year 7) and Domenic Bozzone (Year 8) represented Victoria in the Australian Indoor Hockey Festival in Wollongong, New South Wales. Both William and Domenic were significant contributors and helped their team to play off in the grand final against New South Wales. Unfortunately, they went down in a close contest, 3-2. Best wishes to Firsts Basketball Co-Captain, Ellis Biggar (Year 12), who will play in the Under 20 Victorian A Men’s Basketball team at the Australian Junior Championships in Canberra next week. Need to improve your fitness after the holidays or start preseason for Winter Sport? Running sessions with Craig Mottram, former Olympian and Commonwealth Games athlete, are starting on Wednesday 5 February from 7.00am on the Keith Anderson Oval (KAO). They will run every Monday and Wednesday for the remainder of the Term. The focus of the sessions is to develop technique, aerobic fitness, resilience, mobility and core strength. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to work with high class coaches. Also, the weights room is available for students to use before School, at lunch times and after School. Parents need to complete the Student Readiness Form on the front page of the Parent Portal beforehand. Students should meet with the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Paul Sartori to discuss goals and to develop a training program. The Sport Department like to recognise all students who achieve outstanding sporting feats. Please let us know if your son has done so by emailing me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au. Notifications of Sport cancellations due to weather are posted on Twitter @CamberwellSport and TeamApp camberwellgrammarsport.teamapp.com. More information about the Sport Program can also be found on TeamApp which can also be downloaded from the App Store. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Sport can be directed to me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au. Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Tax File Number (TFN) Everyone needs a tax file number when starting work and all students undertaking a tertiary education also require one. Importantly, students cannot enrol in a CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place) course at university without a Tax File Number, so current Year 12s should get one now. To apply, go online and have your identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office. Apply at TFN Application.

New Course Seeker Website Course Seeker is an interactive, searchable website displaying course information, entry requirements, admission processes and student satisfaction survey results at the study area and institutional level Australia wide. The website is designed to help students make informed decisions about their future study by allowing them to access clear, meaningful and transparent information on ATARs, prerequisites and enrolment policies. VCE students are encouraged to spend some time browsing and familiarising themselves with Course Seeker.

The University Clinical Aptitude Test The UCAT is an admissions test for medical, dental, and clinical science degree programs. Students intending to apply for courses requiring the UCAT (see as list of Universities requiring the UCAT) are reminded that they will need to book a test. Bookings open on 2 March 2020 and close 11 May 2020. The testing dates will be within the month of July 2020. Students who are preparing for entry into any of these courses are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the format of the test at UCAT Test Format and the practice tests and preparation material provided at UCAT Preparation. Find out more at UCAT.
