Casual Clothes Day - Friday 15 November Central Australia Information Evening - Tuesday 12 November Remembrance Day - Monday 11 November

Edition 70, 8 November 2019

From the Headmaster

I hope that you were lucky at the races, and more importantly were able to enjoy a restful day with your family or friends last Tuesday. Our Year 12 students continue to sit their examinations and reports so far suggest that they are feeling generally confident and that the papers have been fair. I wish the very best of luck to all of our students.

Service of Nine Lessons and Carols A reminder to our School families that our Annual Carol Service will take place at 8.00pm on Wednesday 11 December in St Mark’s Church, Burke Road, Camberwell. Following the Service, the Friends of Music are hosting a supper in the Church hall and all members of the congregation are warmly invited to join us. This is a lovely way to end the School year and an opportunity to get together prior to Christmas. Please ensure that you arrive early at the Church as this is always a well-attended occasion.

Junior School Christmas Service Parents and friends of our Junior School children are also warmly invited to attend St Mark’s Church, Burke Road, Camberwell on Thursday 12 December at 11.00am for the annual Christmas Service. This too is a very enjoyable service involving our younger students and will be their final event for the School year.

Proposed Term Dates 2020

Pre Prep Transition into Prep 2020 Parent Information Evening

I include our proposed dates for next year, to assist you with early planning of holidays or trips. Given that we circulate our dates so far in advance, I would ask that you try not to withdraw your son early from School Terms, as this can be very disruptive to their learning program.

Beehive Proposal I have received a very persuasive submission from our Middle School Towards2050 environmental group regarding us hosting a beehive on our property. The boys, with the help of Ms Katrina Massey, have done a great deal of research about how important bees are to our environment, and how the human species depends on their pollination of plants. They have also met with a local company which supplies beehives in our local area – Backyard Honey – and have completed a feasibility study which shows that a hive would be well suited to Camberwell Grammar School. We propose therefore to run a trial with a beehive here next year. The hive will be located in a lockable area with direct access to the outdoors, and students will not be able to access it. It should produce us some of our own honey each year, but more importantly it will help to sustain the bee population in this area.

Most people however will not notice any difference in the bee population around the School – there are already plenty of bees around our gardens. The hive will be maintained by Backyard Honey and they will also help to educate students who are interested about how to care for and maintain bees. We have a very small number of people who are severely allergic to bee stings in our community, and have carefully considered the increased risk of having a hive on site, but believe that this will be minimal. In addition, the bees provided by Backyard Honey are bred to be docile, which means they will be happy to go about collecting pollen and returning to the hive without bothering any humans! I am very proud of the students who brought me this proposal and put in so much work to examining all sides of the issue. I am happy to support them, and we look forward to our very first batch of Camberwell honey!

Wishing Tree Appeal As is the tradition at this time of year, we are now asking Junior School families for your support in the giving of gifts to those less fortunate. Gifts of new toys (unwrapped) for boys and girls of primary school age would be much appreciated. A box will be placed in the Junior School office and will be taken down to St Mark’s with the boys on the day of our Christmas Church Service. The collection will commence on Monday 18 November and conclude on Monday 9 December 2019. This year gifts will be donated to the Salvation Christmas Appeal. The Community Service Team wish to thank you for your wonderful support. Howard Kelly, Head of Junior School

Sport

There are two more weekends of AGSV Sport for the year, which means Friday 15 November is the last day for Summer Sport training. However, some sports continue beyond that date, such as the Cycling, Kayaking and Triathlon squads, who will continue to train until their final competition. Firsts Basketball, Cricket and Tennis take the long trip to Assumption College for their matches this weekend, while Firsts Volleyball take on Yarra Valley Grammar. The Kayaking squad are involved in the annual Paddle to the City on Sunday with Strathcona, MLC and Trinity students. Hopefully the weather stays clear, ensuring all outdoor activities go ahead as planned. Good luck to all students involved in sport this weekend. Following on from the results mentioned in last week’s report, a host of students competed in the second weekend of the Victorian All Schools Athletics Championships. There were some outstanding achievements and results, which are detailed as follows: • Lachie McGowan (Year 7) came 4th in the U14 Hammer (32.36m) and 10th in the U14 Javelin (22.42m) • Harrison Car and Daniel Chen (both Year 7) ran in the U14 800m with Harrison finishing 3rd in his heat (2 min 22s) and Daniel 7th in his heat (2 min 33s) • Sebastian Beck (Year 8) won a gold medal in the U15 200m and broke his own School record with a time of 23.19s. Sebastian has now knocked 1.45 seconds off the School record which had stood since 1975 • Hugo Akse (Year 9) finished 7th in the U16 Javelin with a distance of 33m. Hugo also finished 10th in the Long Jump (5.26m) • Akalanka Gunawardana (Year 9) also competed in the U16 Long Jump and finished 7th with a distance of 5.76m • Jordan Liang (Year 10) finished 8th in the U17 200m final with a time of 23.51s • Tom Bowers (Year 11) won a bronze medal in the U18 3000m with a time of 9:00.37 Next Wednesday will be the final running session with Craig Mottram for the year. Students are encouraged to attend and then look out for more sessions in 2020. It will begin as usual from 6.45am on the Keith Anderson Oval (KAO). The sessions are a fantastic opportunity for students to develop aerobic fitness, resilience, mobility and core strength. Keep an eye out for notifications detailing when sessions start up again next year. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Sport can be directed to me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au. Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport
