End of Term 3

AGSV Athletics

As we come to the end of another very busy term, I wish all of our families a relaxing and safe break over the next three weeks. Classes begin again for Term 4 on Monday 7 October 2019. The School Offices will be open as usual throughout the vacation. In particular, I wish our Year 12 students well as they enter the final stages of preparation for their VCE Unit 3 and 4 examinations soon after they return in Term 4. The third week of this coming break will see most of the Year 12s involved in practice examinations held at the School under full examination conditions. I am very grateful to Mr Marcus Jones, and our Senior Staff who make their time available for our students in this way to ensure they have the best possible preparation for the examination period. I encourage each student to prepare as fully as possible for these practice sessions – the more complete the preparation the more the benefit to be derived from the practice. Attached here is the Unit 3 and 4 Trial Examination Timetable.

AGSV Athletics Congratulations and well done to all of the students who competed in the AGSV Athletics Carnival at the Lakeside Oval last Wednesday. So many of our students achieved personal best times, and we won medals in nearly half of all the events, finishing a very creditable fourth overall. Well done to Mr Mark Mews, and all of the Athletic coaches for the great progress made over the short season. Athletics Finals - CGS Records Broken: Under 14 100m

Sebastian Beck 11.79s (broke the record of 11.90s from 2010)

Under 14 200m

Sebastian Beck 24.09s (broke the record of 24.64s from 1975)

Under 15 400m

Benny Grayson 53.71s (broke the record of 53.90s from 2006)

Elva Allan Concert A very big term of music was brought to a conclusion last night at our annual Elva Allen Concert. This concert gives our music scholars the chance to play in small groups across mixed year levels, demonstrating their virtuosity on a variety of instruments in a wonderful chamber music program. The standard of the playing was superb, and I congratulate the boys and their teachers on what they have been able to achieve. We congratulate Isaac Hui (Year 10) on Viola, a very worthy winner of this year’s prestigious ‘2019 Elva Allan Strings Prize’.

Summer Uniform During Term 4 and Term 1, students in the Middle and Senior Schools have the option of wearing summer uniform. Shorts of the approved style may be worn instead of long trousers. The blazer becomes an optional item of uniform. Boys need not wear their blazers to and from School nor at formal School events. The pullover must not be worn as the outermost garment in place of the blazer. Boys may now wear short style (crew) socks as part of their Summer Uniform from the beginning of Term 4. I do appreciate the efforts that parents make to co-operate fully with the School with regard to the appearance of our boys. We can all take great pride in the fact that the vast majority of Camberwell Grammar students wear their uniforms properly, not only at School, but also on the way to and from School.

Open Day - Saturday 12 October A reminder that our annual Open Day will take place on the first Saturday of next Term, commencing at 10.00am with Food Stalls, Subject Displays and Demonstrations, and Sports Matches throughout the day. At 1.00pm the School Cadet Unit will be holding its Passing Out Parade. This event involves both the Cadet Unit’s Passing Out Parade on the Keith Anderson Oval and will act as a formal farewell to our Year 12 students who are leaving the Unit. Open Day gives our School the chance to celebrate our sense of community, our achievements and the work we do with our students. Staff, students and parents come together and we have the chance to show our school off to visitors. Please keep the date free; it would be great to see as many of you there as possible.

Grandparents’ Day – Tuesday 29 October We are again delighted to invite Grandparents of all present students to visit the School on Tuesday 29 October. There will be a chance for Grandparents to spend time with their Grandsons with a morning tea, followed by a Concert and concluding with a School tour. Please encourage all Grandparents to visit us and to see the work being done by our students. The flyer attached here includes booking details.

2020 Senior School Production Auditions Audition registration is now open for next year’s musical, the rather unfortunately named, ‘Urinetown’. Students can book into a 20-minute audition slot after School on either Thursday 24 October, Friday 25 October or Tuesday 29 October. Auditionees are also required to attend a Dance/Movement audition on Wednesday 30 October at 3.30pm. For more information and to book and audition, please click here.

Duke of Edinburgh Presentation The Duke of Edinburgh Awards encourage students to make individual choices and set goals to improve oneself with the support and guidance of people skilled in those areas. The components and areas in which choice can be made include physical recreation, skill, service and adventurous activity, with satisfactory completion being awarded to candidates having displayed commitment and improvement in each activity. It was my pleasure to announce and present Nicholas Sarlos-Welsh (Year 10) with his Bronze Award at yesterday’s Assembly.

Long Tan Leadership Awards The Australian Defence Force seeks nominations each year for the Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards. The Awards are offered to students currently in Years 10 and 12 who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within the School or the broader community whilst also displaying strong values such as respect for others, striving for their best and ‘mateship’. Congratulations to this year’s awardees: Daniel Watson (Year 10) and Cameron Martin (Year 12) who were presented with their certificates at yesterday’s Assembly.

Melbourne Schools Battalion The MCC Cup recognises excellence in Marksmanship on the Weapons Training Simulation System. Earlier this Term, the Cup was contested by nine Victorian School Based Army Cadet Units in the Melbourne Schools Battalion with the CGS Unit comprising Michael Fok (Year 11), Hugh McGlone (Year 11) and Cameron Martin (Year 12) and being awarded first prize and presented with their medals at yesterday’s Assembly.

2019 Year 10 Maths Games Day The Year 10 Maths Games day was held at Trinity Grammar last week. Students were required to solve many challenging mathematical problems and participate in a variety of Strategy Games. Congratulations to Isaac Hui, Alex Lew, William Nguyen and Otto Zhao who performed well on the day and came in second place.

Debating and Public Speaking The Evatt Victoria competition is the state round of Australia’s premier debating and diplomacy competition. Evatt places young Australians in the shoes of UN Security Council representatives, making them debate issues of international security, human rights and current affairs. Several hundred teams start out and vie for a place in the final round, which features 15 teams competing for the top prize. Camberwell Grammar has three teams in the final round: the Year 12 duos of Oliver Papillo and Lachlan Doig, James Gunasegaram and Andrew Zeng, and Rory Lewis and Alex Seidler. With over 250 schools and 1,500 teams, the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools Competition is the largest English-language debating competition in the world. Camberwell Grammar School is a regional host school and has two teams in the Quarter Finals for their Year level: the Year 12 team of Lachlan Doig, Ben Finney, James Gunasegaram, Rory Lewis, Oliver Papillo and Edward Wu and the Year 11 team of Philip Alex, Tory Crosgrove, Jamie Garnham, Rohan Hodges and Thomas Ng. The British Parliamentary format of debating is another variant and the team of Rohan Hodges and Tory Crosgrove are also in the Senior British Parliamentary Competition Finals in October. Finally, the DAV Swannie Awards are given to the speaker in each region and grade who has the highest average speaker score after completing at least three debates during the year. This year, the best Year 12 speaker in the Camberwell region was our own Andrew Zeng. We congratulate Andrew and wish our teams the very best as they compete in the weeks to come.

Holiday Activities It is always pleasing to note the range of activities that our students are involved in over every vacation period. It is particularly important to note that these activities can only take place because of the enthusiastic and committed effort of staff members. We wish all the students on the following tours all the very best: • Annual Cadet Camp, from Friday 13 September to Wednesday 18 September. • Tour to USA to visit the Space Camp at Huntsville, Alabama, then three days in Washington DC, followed by three days in Florida at Cape Kennedy Space Centre. • French Tour – from Sunday 15 September to Saturday 28 September. Middle School

It is always pleasing to get to the end of a Term knowing that you have put in your best effort, facing situations that my have seemed insurmountable at the outset. There are many challenges offered here at Camberwell Grammar School and I must say how proud I am of the boys for taking these on. It is even more rewarding to see so many boys help each other; supporting, encouraging and offering guidance along the journey. To help identify opportunities to do an even better job on this front, a welfare survey will be distributed to parents at the beginning of next Term. I wish you all a relaxing three-week break. Following, are the highlights from Week 9.

Mathematics Competitions Earlier this Term, all Middle School students participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition and the results have now been received. In an excellent set of results, 28 students received High Distinction awards for their efforts. Flynn Helmer (Year 8) received a Prize award and Joel Cheok (Year 7) received a Prize award and a Medal. Joel has been invited to an Awards Ceremony at Government House to receive his Medal. Certificates of Achievement will be distributed to all participants at the start of Term 4 in Mathematics lessons. Joel and Flynn were invited to participate in a further competition called the Australian Intermediate Olympiad (AIMO) which they sat yesterday. The AIMO is a four-hour paper with 10 very challenging problems to solve, the results of which will be received next Term. Furthermore, Flynn has also been recognised for his efforts in the University of Melbourne School Mathematics Competition from Term 2. This is the second year in a row that Flynn has been invited to the Awards Ceremony to receive a Certificate of Merit for his success in this Competition – a fantastic achievement. Well done to Flynn, Joel and all the Middle School students for their efforts in Mathematics Competitions this year. Mark Mews, Middle School Mathematics Coordinator

Athletics Finals Report Last Wednesday was a perfect day for the Athletics Finals at Lakeside Stadium and Camberwell Grammar School finished in fourth place overall, which was a very pleasing result. We are still waiting for the full results but Camberwell had 27 medallists including 13 gold medallists. However, just as pleasing were the huge number of personal bests in the track and field, with fantastic performances across all age groups and all events. Athletics is one of the few sports where students from Years 6 to 12 have an equal contribution to the overall result and was a great team effort. Well done to the Year 12 Athletes who have now competed in their last finals competition and thank you all for your contributions to Athletics over the years. In a fitting finale to the Open 4x100m Relay, Captain of Athletics, Matt McKenna was on the anchor leg and managed to bring the baton home in first place by two tenths of a second. Well done to all Athletes for their efforts this Term.

Projec10 Fete The Projec10 groups from Fintona, CGGS and CGS held a combined Fete today. It was exciting to see the groups’ concepts come into fruition after weeks of planning. Opportunities like these are the first for many, so the learnings, mishaps and successes are a big part of improving future entrepreneurial and collaborative ventures. Well done to all who put in a big effort and a special thank you to Ms Sally Treacy and Ms Filiani Newton for providing the opportunity to the boys and helping plan the event. Also a big thank you to Mr Matt Warner and Ms Liz Longridge and the Property Team for assisting in the set up of the Fete. The group that raised the most and the total funds raised by Projec10 for the charity, Opportunity International, will be announced at the Year 8 Social on Friday 25 October in the PAC.

Waterpolo Congratulations to all the boys who took part in the voluntary Spring Season. Having all teams make it through to the Finals was a huge achievement and a tribute to the Aquatic Program at CGS. Many thanks to Mr Paul Double for the positive culture he has helped establish in the Waterpolo Program.

NGV Terracotta Warriors Excursion Last Thursday Year 7 ventured to the National Gallery of Victoria. It was a fantastic day out, experiencing valuable hands-on learning of the History Curriculum. The boys are to be commended for their behaviour on the excursion and sincere thanks to Ms Miranda McDonald for her innovation in her first year as Middle School English and History Subject Coordinator.

Elephant Ed Year 8 Year 8 Parents have been sent an invitation to the Adolescent Internet Use on Wednesday 9 October. This is a special event for parents ahead of the workshops with Year 8.

Talk From Author Robert Newton On Thursday Year 8 were treated to stories from Robert Newton, author of Runner. Robert Newton gave some wonderful insights regarding his best-selling novel as well as offering some ideas on writing historical fiction. Page 3

Fencing - Julian Lim Julian Lim (Year 7) recently won the U14 Thailand Fencing Championship. In an elimination tournament of 32 competitors, Julian was down 3-8 (first to 15) in the Final. He used his experience and cool head to adjust his strategy, winning 15-11 in the end.

Year 8 Cadets Our Year 8 boys are currently trialling Cadets by participating in a two night Bivouac at Puckapunyal. We wish them a safe and fulfilling time and hope they have an enjoyable camp. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School

With the end of Term 3, the boys can look back with pride on all they have achieved and experienced over the past nine weeks. There have been many wonderful moments and activities that have seen the boys at their best, including Book Week, Poem in Your Pocket, excursions, incursions, athletic trials, the September Concert, Assembly, Father’s Day, class projects and competitions. It is time now to rest, re-energise and be ready for all that is in store during Term 4, commencing with Open Day on Saturday 12 October. Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday break.

Open Day Camberwell Grammar School Open Day is being held on Saturday, 12 October from 10.00am until 2.00pm. On Open Day we will be offering performances, hands-on activities and displays in classrooms for students and visitors to our School. The Art Studio will also showcase students’ work. The animal farm returns for all the little ones and animal lovers. All boys, Prep to Year 5, are expected to attend for at least the duration of the activities in which they are participating. Any boys who have conflicting engagements are asked to notify Mr Kelly in writing by the start of Term 4.

Last Friday 6 September, on a remarkably clear day given the forecast, our Division Athletics squad represented South Yarra Districts at Lakeside Stadium. It was a successful day for many boys in our team of eight, and all boys tried their best and supported one another fantastically. Angus Rynne, William Watson (both Year 6), Louis Zhang (Year 5) and Sean Verghese (Year 4) all performed admirably in their track or field events. Special mention to Harrison Ross (Year 5), who took home a third place ribbon in his hurdles event, fast enough to break a School record in that race! We have some athletes moving on to the Regional carnival next term. Congratulations to Max McCool (Year 5), who took first in the 100m and second in the 200m. Max set a School record in the 200m event, and his time would have also beaten the Division’s record. Max was also part of our successful 4x100m relay team, who came second by 0.05 seconds and will represent us at Casey Fields next term. Congratulations to Caleb Jack, Edward Liang, Harrison Ross and Max McCool (all Year 5) for that result.

Walk to School Month During October, students across the state are encouraged to walk, ride or scoot to and from School to help build healthy habits for life. We are supporting and participating in the program again this year! We encourage students to walk to School on Friday 25 October. Active travel options provide students with the opportunity to build relationships as well as reduce traffic and pollution.

Summer Uniform The first month of Term 4 allows boys to transition from winter into summer uniform depending on weather conditions. Summer and winter uniform must be complete, boys cannot wear a mixture of the two. After the Melbourne Cup weekend all boys must be in summer attire. Irrespective of summer or winter uniform, grey broad brimmed hats must be worn from the start of Term 4. No hat no play is our sun smart policy. Sport

With Spring Sport now over, I would like to thank all Year 12 students for their service to the Spring Sport Program, particularly to the handful of those involved in Athletics: Ryan Box, Harley Beechey (Vice Captain), Ben Craigie, Thomas Graves and Matthew McKenna (Captain). The Athletics team performed admirably at the AGSV Finals and the Water Polo teams did very well, as explained below in Sam’s report. We are proud to offer a variety of sports for students to be involved in and thankful to the students who participate in them. Best wishes to Abdullah Sabaa (Year 10), Cody Greenwood and Yanning Zhang (Year 9) who are competing in the 2019 Victorian Swimming Open Short Course Championships this weekend. Over the holidays, students have the opportunity to be involved in organised activities at school. Under the guidance of former Olympian and Commonwealth Games athlete, Craig Mottram, group fitness sessions will run every Monday and Friday morning from 9.00am to 10.30am over the holidays (excluding Friday 27 September). The focus of the sessions is to develop aerobic fitness, resilience, mobility and core training, as well as strength and conditioning. The David Dyer Fitness Centre will also be open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10.00am to 12.30pm and Wednesdays 12.30 to 3.00pm. Summer Sport training commences from Tuesday 8 October. Training schedules have been advertised, so students should be aware of their training commitments. While students have been placed in teams, anyone who wishes to trial for a team ranked higher than their current team will have the opportunity to do so within the first two weeks of training. Communication with staff members in charge of the teams will be critical. The first round of AGSV matches takes place on Saturday 19 October. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Summer Sport can be directed to the Director of Sport, Mr Lachlan Crawford, at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report In the last round of the water polo season, Camberwell had numerous teams competing for a medal placing. The Junior Gold and Blue teams faced off against each other, with the Gold team able to come away victors with a 6-4 win, whilst the Camberwell Mitre team was also successful as they won 4-1 against Trinity. Competing for the bronze medal against Melbourne High, the Intermediate As encountered a narrow loss as they went down 6-7. Also competing for a third place finish, the Open A defeated Ivanhoe comfortably in a dominant performance to clinch the bronze medal. After a more than impressive season, the Open B team reached the grand final as they came up against Marcellin’s A team. Knowing it would be a tough challenge, the team started strong, as they came into quarter time 1 all. However, Marcellin were able to take control of the game in the second quarter, as Camberwell were unable to rectify the deficit, as they lost 5-4. Wednesday saw the CGS Athletics squad head to the annual AGSV Finals, hosted at Lakeside Stadium. Camberwell finished in fourth place, one place up from last year, as the squad also recorded 27 medallists, with 13 of those being gold. Even more impressive, were the countless personal best results recorded in both track and field events, illustrating a very promising future for athletics at CGS. Congratulations are also in order for Benny Grayson (Year 9)who broke a 14 year old Camberwell record with a time of 53.7 seconds in his 400m race, while the 4x100 Open relay team finished their athletics career on a high, as the team claimed the gold medal by two tenths of a second, on the back of an amazing run by captain Matthew McKenna (Year 12). The CGS A Bowls team qualified to be part of this event due to their win in the AGSV competition. Twelve teams, that had won their respective district competitions, came together from all over the State of Victoria to play for the title of top Victorian School team. At the conclusion of the Round Robin, to decide the finalists, CGS had finished third overall. CGS had two convincing wins over both Melton Secondary College and Casey Grammar, but a narrow loss to Kerang Technical High School. Only Kerang and Mazenod came through undefeated. Unfortunately we were matched against Kerang again in the semi-finals and lost five shots to four. Kerang went on to win the whole competition, playing the Grand Final against Mazenod and winning in a tie-breaker. Congratulations to William Cook (Year 10, skipper) Elijah Pannozzo (Year 10, lead) and the two interchanging seconds of Hieu Tran and Kristian Bite (both Year 9). Mr Mike Cody (Team Manager) drove the boys to the venue in Deer Park to play under-cover as storms were forecast and would have made play impossible. Thanks also to Mr Bob Jones (Coach from Box Hill RSL BC) who was also present. Last Friday, A combination of players from Camberwell’s Firsts, Seconds and Inter A soccer teams were invited to represent the AGSV in the Melbourne City FC Premier Schools Competition. The team was fortunate enough to make the semi-finals, after some brilliant performances from Niko Verrios (Year 12) and Blake Pearson (Year 10) saw the team finish at the top of their group. In deteriorating conditions, Camberwell battled hard against past-champions, Mazenod, however the boys were unable to advance after they went down in a 2-0 loss. Good luck to all those competing in the coming weeks and remember to keep active over the break. Sam Garrard, Captain of Sport Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Parents will be able to drive into Gate 1, park right in front of Kingussie, drop their cake in and continue out of Gate 2. Remember - we cannot accept any with fresh cream or items that need refrigeration. Thank you in advance for your support. Looking forward to lots of home baked goodies to make our Open Day cake stall a wonderful success. You can sign up for the bake sale by visiting: www.volunteersignup.org/RPEDW.
