Year 3 Gundawindi Camp Examinations - Years 7 to 11 Last Day of School for Year 11s, 10s and 9s Borneo Camp Australian Science Olympiad Academic Achievement Award Guide Dogs Victoria

Edition 71, 15 November 2019

From the Headmaster Remembrance Day Last Monday, at 11.00am, students and staff members gathered at our School flagpole to pause for a minute’s silence in honour of all those men and women who have given their lives fighting in wars for our country. In doing so our intention is not to glorify war, but to remember the courage and the sacrifice which these men and women displayed for us, and we prayed for peace. In memory and respect, students from our Junior, Middle and Senior School laid wreaths at our flagpole (outside the Sports Centre), representing our staff, students, and parents. William Lardner (Year 7) played the Last Post and Rouse very beautifully from the Roystead balcony.

Year 3 Gundawindi Camp

Middle School

All Year 3 students will be spending the first part of next week at the Gundawindi Camp. The boys are very excited about attending the Camp and the program will provide them with the opportunity of many outdoor activities, which will challenge them in ways they do not often experience in the classroom. I am looking forward to hearing some of their adventures upon their return on Wednesday. I am grateful to the teachers who have given up time with their families to be with the students.

They will spend three weeks trekking, working on projects and spending time working with and learning from the people of this isolated region. Forty percent of the costs of the trip go directly to the Borneo communities and the team are seeking your help. As part of their fundraising effort, Ethan Lau (Year 10) and Victor Zhou (Year 10) will be performing in a mini-concert tonight in the Music School at 7.30pm. Academic Achievement Award Congratulations to Joshua Hui and Jonathan Yen who have recently been awarded an Academic Achievement Award for distance education studies in Japanese in Year 7. The award recognises that both Joshua and Jonathan have maintained a consistent effort and a very high level of achievement in the Distance Education Course in 2019 with the Victorian School of Languages. The boys will receive their awards at a Ceremony to be held in December.

Guide Dogs Victoria More than 400 guests, including CGS’s Mr Dayan Ramalingam, and 77 very cute labradors, filled the Hawthorn Arts Centre on Saturday 26 October, to recognise the achievements of this year’s graduating class of dogs from Guide Dogs Victoria. It takes two years and over $50,000 to breed, raise, train and match a suitable Guide Dog with a person with low vision. The event honoured not only Guide Dog partnerships, but all the special ‘careers’ that GDV’s talented dogs pursue including Pets as Therapy Dogs, Companion Dogs, Service Dogs, Special Placement Dogs, Ambassador Dogs and Dogs in the Breeding program. Students and staff at Camberwell Grammar School may know one of these dogs in particular – our very own Indra, who is an Ambassador Dog. While she is based near Reception, in the Health Centre and under the care of our Student Health Coordinator, Mrs Rhonda Nicholson, Indra can be found in all areas of the School – on yard duty with teachers, cheering students up, and sometimes enjoying the sounds from the Music School. Today students had a free dress day to raise money for Guide Dogs Victoria, so that they can continue their great work in supporting the vision impaired.

Parents’ Association The Camberwell Grammar Parents’ Association is seeking applicants for the role of Treasurer from February 2020. The CGS PA operates to promote the CGS Community and to raise money for a variety of activities for students and the School. With the current Treasurer moving in 2020 to the President’s role, there is a vacancy for an experienced Accountant to join the PA team. There are approximately four Parents’ Association meetings per year in which reports are required. If you think you have the time and would like to join an energetic and successful team the Association would love to hear from you. Please send an email to Stuart Harker at Stuart@harkeradvisory.com or contact Ms Karley Knight in the Development Office cec@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Boyd and Balfour Exhibition On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December our past Studio Art Teacher, Mr Kevin Boyd and past student Jack Balfour (2014) will be holding an Exhibition and Sale of handcrafted ceramics, stoneware, porcelain and raku at 8 Kitchener Street Deepdene. Further information regarding the Exhibition can be found in this flyer. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Middle School KOALA Kids Walkathon It was an outstanding achievement to raise $8,155.25 at our annual Koala Kids fun run/walk. This wonderful organisation provides support for children and their families who are affected by cancer. Congratulations to the following students for the most money raised - George Johnson (Year 7), Zane Fares, Michael Wang and Conner Inston (all Year 8). Page 2

Year 8 Social The Year 8 Social raised $3,914.50 for Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, sincere thanks to Mr Joe Tierney and the Year 8 Social Coordinators.

Year 7 and 8 Examinations (20-22 November, 2019) Year 7 and 8 students have received an examination booklet posted to Schoology, which contains the examination timetable and study tips. The three day examination period commences next Wednesday, so the boys should be busy revising their course content at present. The examination period should not be a source of major stress and anxiety for the boys, as it is predominantly about obtaining invaluable experience that will serve them well throughout their schooling, ensuring that they are able to improve.

Middle School Values Assemblies This year Our Middle School PSD Coordinator, Mr Peter Zagarn established a Values Assembly in Semester 1 and 2 as a component of the PSD Curriculum. The Semester 2 Assemblies took place last Tuesday and provided an opportunity for students to highlight examples of their mates ‘living’ the School values. It was very impressive listening to the boys share insights into the way that they view their peers. There were many fine examples across the three Assemblies, to name a few from Year 8: Hayden Bourke (8T) who demonstrated respect helping a Year 7 boy up the stairs with his cello, full school bag, cricket kit and sports bag; Nathan Leung (8M) who showed optimism coming back from a broken leg; Eric Wang (8R) demonstrated learning through his capacity and willingness to help his peers with challenging academic activities; and Flynn Helmer (8C) who plucked up the courage to get the dance floor moving at the Year 8 Social!

Year 6 Cupcakes Our Year 6 boys (and parents I suspect) baked 100’s of cakes to help raise valuable funds for Guide Dogs Victoria (GDV). They were a great hit, many students selling out of cakes in minutes. Last Monday, Ms Fiona Macmilan from GDV addressed the Assembly about the Guide Dog training and all the valuable contributions that the fundraising will make.

ICAS Science Competition Congratulations to all of the boys who took part in the ICAS Science Competition. The following boys received special recognition for their efforts: High Distinction: Joel Cheok, Jonty Neil, Tony Zhang (all Year 7). ICAS Medals: Nicholas Wang (Year 6), Chris Lu (Year 7). Mr Scott Wyatt will be attending a special ceremony at the Melbourne Convention Centre on Saturday 23 November to recognise the achievements of Nicholas and Chris as medal recipients.

Friday Finishing Times The Middle School will be involved in a variety of transition activities over the final few Fridays of Term 4: Week 6 Year 6 to 8 Year Level Meetings 2.45pm to 3.20p Week 7 Year 6 to 7 House Leadership Workshop 2.45pm to 3.20pm Year 8 Transition Meetings with the Heads of House 2.45pm to 4.00pm Week 8 Year 6 to 7 House Leadership Workshop 2.45pm to 3.20pm Year 8 Transition Meetings with the Heads of House 2.45pm to 4.00pm Week 9 Year 6 to 7 Year Level Meetings 2.45pm to 3.20pm Year 8 Kangaroobie. Junior School 2019 Junior School AGSV Athletics On Thursday 7 November, a team of thirty-eight Year 4, 5 and 6 boys competed in the 2019 Annual Junior School AGSV Athletics Carnival held at Bill Sewart Athletics track, Burwood. The entire team, selected from standout performances from the recent House and District Athletics, performed extremely well on a wet and windy day. Congratulations go to the following boys who finished in top three places:

Sport

It was a momentous weekend of results last week. All five Firsts teams won their matches, which is the first time since 2010 that it has happened. Basketball and Cricket won their first match of the season, while Volleyball have made it two-from-two. Also, all 10A, 9A & 8A Basketball, 2nds & 8A Cricket, as well as 2nds, 9A & 8A Tennis teams all won their matches in what was an outstanding weekend for the School. The Cycling squad had their first event for the season in blustery and wet conditions at Casey. In a field of 58 in the Seniors, Zac Kelly (Year 10) and Logan Taplin (Year 9) finished 2nd and 5th, respectively. The top performing Junior was Marcus Liew (Year 8) who, in his first season of Cycling, finished 21st out of 69. This weekend marks the final round of AGSV Sport for the year. Consequently, sport training has now finished for most teams and students. Some sports will continue to train, as they still have competitions scheduled later in the Term, such as Cycling, Kayaking and Triathlon. Students are encouraged to contact the teacher in charge of their team for confirmation. Firsts Basketball gets the round underway this afternoon, taking on PEGS at 5.15pm in the Sports Centre, while Firsts Cricket and Tennis take on PEGS tomorrow. Firsts Volleyball take on Marcellin. The Triathlon squad will be competing in their first race of the 2XU Triathlon Series on Sunday morning at Elwood. Good luck to all students competing this weekend. A reminder that Summer Sport training will recommence from Thursday 30 January 2020, which is the first day back for students for the year. Firsts teams may begin training beforehand. The next round of the AGSV Season, Round 5, is on Saturday 1 February. Please add those dates to your calendar. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Sport can be directed to me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report In the third round of the AGSV Summer Season, Camberwell’s 1st XIII Table Tennis squad hoped to extend their undefeated run, facing Trinity. The team got the upper hand on their opponents early on and with the reliable performance of Nathan Shi (Year 11), the team established a dominant lead. Teammates, Bryden Tan (Year 11) and Joshua Hui (Year 8) helped maintain control as they utilised all angles to win their rubbers convincingly. The team continued their undefeated season, winning 14 Rubbers, 42 Games to just 1 Rubber and 3 Games. Returning from a bye and eager to continue their commanding performance from Round 1, the 1st XI Volleyball team played Yarra Valley over the weekend. The match began in a closely fought affair with consistent setting from Ming Jin Low (Year 11) and held together by the serving run of Frank Bite (Year 11), as Camberwell managed to clinch the first set by a narrow margin of 27 to 25. The second set began with equal intensity, with gallant blocks from Hugo Akse (Year 9) as we held onto the set, 26 to 24. However, the strong opposition was able to deny Camberwell the match in straight sets, as Yarra Valley were able to steal the third set, 11 to 25. However, with contributions Gregory Kerdemelidis and John Williams (Year 10) helping to break through once again, Camberwell secured the win by closing the last set 25 to 19. In challenging conditions, the 1st XI Cricket team faced Assumption College at Kilmore. After two disappointing results in the previous games, the team was looking to a return to form and win back the ‘Carroll Cup’ from Assumption. Camberwell was able to get off to a bullish start with Connor Laird (Year 9) taking two wickets in the first over. Laird was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, with Lachlan Ross (Year 9) and Lewis Winkett (Year 11) both taking two. With 175 runs as their target to win, Josh Pollocks (Year 11) joined Jordan McCleery (Year 10) as the pair began to put the innings back on track. The pair combined for 75 in just 12 overs before Pollocks was dismissed for 29. McCleery scored a commendable 75 runs, before Connor Laird and Will Stamper (Year 8) worked together to pass Assumption’s score. Camberwell earned a satisfying win 5 wickets down in the 48th over. Similarly, for the 1st V Basketball, the long drive up to Assumption was worthwhile. The match began strongly, with Taran Laurence (Year 11) taking the team to an early lead. With aggressive defensive contributions from Charlie Amling (Year 11), Camberwell managed to keep Assumption to a mere 11 points in the first half. Also eager to grab their first win of the season, Assumption raised the intensity heading into the second half. Nonetheless, Camberwell’s pressure at both ends of the court proved to be superior, as Taran finished with 31 points and the team won 65 to 43. Best of luck to all those competing in the final round of AGSV Summer Season before the holidays. Tom Bowers, Captain of Games (2020) Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Music Carol Service Benjamin Britten’s This Little Babe and John Taverner’s The Lamb are just some of the yuletide treasures to be performed at this year’s Carol Service. The Service will be at 8.00pm, Wednesday 11 December at St Paul’s Cathedral. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Everyone in our School community is invited to reflect and give thanks for 2019. See the flyer attached here.

2019 Twilight Concert The 2019 Twilight Concert is fast approaching on Thursday 28 November. The newly formed Palm Court Orchestra will be performing in the PAC Foyer from 6.15pm. At 7.00pm, we will move into the Middleton Theatre for the Concert. The featured ensembles include Highton Strings, CGS Chorale, Senior Stage Band, the Chamber Orchestra, the Double Bass Quartet, CGS Symphony Orchestra and CGS Big Band. Page 5
