Open Day - Saturday 12 October

Open Day, Saturday 12 October

Our annual Open Day will take place on the first Saturday of next Term, commencing at 10.00am with food stalls, subject displays and demonstrations, and sports matches throughout the day. At 1.00pm the School Cadet Unit will be holding its Passing Out Parade. This event involves both the Cadet Unit’s Passing Out Parade on the Keith Anderson Oval and will act as a formal farewell to our Year 12 students who are leaving the Unit. Open Day gives our School the chance to celebrate our sense of community, our achievements and the work we do with our students. Staff, students and parents come together, and we have the chance to show our School off to visitors. Please keep the date free; it would be great to see as many of you there as possible.

An added bonus is the beautiful CGS pudding bowl which comes free with every pudding! The puddings are on sale now and make excellent gifts. Please click here to order yours now!

Australian Scout Medallion I was pleased to receive notification that Jonathan Pettolino (Year 9) has earned the Australian Scout Medallion, which is a major milestone in a youth member’s Scouting journey. To attain the top award in each of the five Sections in Scouting reflects initiative in tackling this challenge, sustained effort over many months and years, plus self-discipline, teamwork and leadership. Congratulations to Jonathan on this achievement. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Tournament of the Minds After 6 weeks of intense rehearsal during Friday Activities, two teams of Year 7 students performed their solution to a long-term problem last Sunday. With one team inventing a new symbol to add to our written language and the other team finding their way around Australia in a hot air balloon parodying The Wizard of Oz, performances were slick and creative. In addition to this, the spontaneous problem unseen until Sunday was to finish a short story with a creative ending. Both teams performed very well and brought more than a few smiles to the judges, their parents and teachers in the audience. The Carrot Tops team who invented a new letter symbol comprised Matthew Lau, Chris Lu, Joshua Ng, Jayden Yap, Timothy Yeow, Tony Zhang and Jim Zhu. The Cabbage Patch Kids team flying around Australia were Nathan Chan, Timothy Gunasegaram, Jonty Neil, Mark Thiel, George Trembath, James Tsang and Byron Zhang.

Ms Massey’s students have been creatively collaborating on several exciting initiatives. Many of these I am not allowed to share at this point, although I have been permitted to disclose that they have revitalised the Green Room on the top floor of the William Angliss Building (WAB) and installed several garden beds. The group will be selling the produce at Open Day on Saturday 12 October. On Tuesday 10 September during Period 4 and 5, the entire Middle School will view the documentary 2040, this is one of the Projec10 Groups ventures. A Gold Coin Donation is asked in aid of Opportunity International.

Saturday 24 August at Burwood Seventy athletes (36 from Middle School, 34 from Senior School) enjoyed a great morning at the CGS trials at Burwood on Saturday. With the finals just 2 weeks away, the squad is gradually taking shape with improvements in all age groups. In the Under 13s, Ethan Tran (Year 6) and Victor Shao (Year 7) both improved their 100m PB’s by over 1 second. Ethan had a busy morning doing the 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump, triple jump and relay. There were also notable performances by Cameron Yeang (Year 7, 4.06m in the long jump), Angus Rynne (Year 6, 18.15m in the discus) and Nathan Bosmans (Year 7, 9.26m in the triple jump). In the Under 14s, Matthew Lau (Year 7) achieved a season’s best in the 100m with a time of 13.4s, and William Allsop (Year 8) jumped 1.45m in the high jump. In the long jump, 5 students jumped over 4 metres with the help of a favourable tailwind. Harrison Car (Year 7) again put in a great effort, participating in a total of 6 events.

What a Book Week!

Open Day, Saturday 12 October

What a wonderful week we had in Junior School celebrating children’s literature through the Book Week theme ‘Reading is my Secret Power’. The week began with a visit from author/illustrator team Andrew Hansen and Jessica Roberts who shared the inspiration behind their series, Bab Sharkey and the Animal Mummies, with Years 2 to 5. Andrew’s hilarious read-aloud style and Jessica’s quirky illustration demonstration were a big hit with the boys. Later in the week author/illustrator Kylie Dunstan shared her creative techniques with Preprep, Prep and Year 1 classes with the boys producing their own emotion drawings during her sessions. Boys were immersed in the shortlisted titles during Library lessons building their literacy skills and expanding their reading experience. All week the Library was buzzing with scavenger hunts, quiz games and book-themed activities. The highlight was the Book Week dress up morning and Assembly. A magnificent range of book characters, including Hogwarts-inspired Junior School staff, paraded to Middleton Theatre for an exciting and fun Assembly. Congratulations to our competition winners and to all boys and staff for their enthusiasm in sharing the joy of reading. Our secret power has been unleashed!

Sport

The Water Polo teams have their semi-finals this weekend. Our teams have been performing strongly, so we hope to be represented well in the grand finals. After an improved turn out at the Camberwell only meet last weekend, the Athletics team return to the track in Burwood for their final trial meet before the Eliminations on Thursday. The AGSV Finals are on Wednesday 11 September at Lakeside Stadium, so we’re hoping for a strong turn out from our athletes. The Snowsports team competed in the Victorian Interschools Championships last week and performed very strongly. Declan Woolf (Year 12), Arya Aminazad (Year 9), Samuel Li (Year 5) and Hugh Watson (Year 3) all gained selection to compete in the National Interschools Championships. Unfortunately, Declan had to decline, but we wish Arya, Samuel and Hugh all the best for their respective events next week. Congratulations to Tom Bowers (Year 11), who finished 11th in the Boys Under 18 6km race at the 2019 Australian Cross Country Championships, held in Wollongong last weekend. An outstanding achievement. Old Boy, Ayce Taylor (2018) has been playing for the Northern Knights in the AFL Under 18 NAB League this season. His team is playing in the first week of finals this weekend and, in more exciting news for him personally, Ayce has been invited to the AFL Draft Combine, which is being held in early October. We wish him the best of luck. Preseason training has begun for a number of Summer sports and it is exciting to see so much enthusiasm already. Summer season training officially begins from Tuesday 8 October, with the first round of AGSV matches taking place on Saturday 19 October.

Sport Report The water polo season continued last weekend, with the teams now jostling for position on the ladder as the finals draw near. The Intermediate A team played in a consistent 4 quarter effort to win 7-1, with Caleb Smith (Year 9), Luke Doblin (Year 10) supporting Ben Grlj (Year 9) in defence, whilst Charlie Chun (Year 9), Harrison Meers (Year 10) and Cody Greenwood (Year 9) were able to finish off the teamwork with 7 goals. The Open B team was without their full-strength lineup, as Matthew Lewison (Year 11) stepped up to play in an unfamiliar goalkeeper position. Luckily for the team, he excelled in his newly found position, as he was able to stop some crucial forward attacks from Whitefriars with the end result finishing in a convincing 8-6 victory. The Open A team had an especially tight game, with the scores neck and neck all game. With only 20 seconds left on the clock, Melbourne High were able to sneak the ball into the back of the net, as the team came away with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss. On Tuesday, a mixed squad of Open A and B players fought hard through 5 games to reach the Grand Final of the Schoolboys Water Polo Championships. The squad defeated teams from University High and Caulfield Grammar School to reach the Final against a very competent and skilled Melbourne High team. Camberwell were able to fight hard but ultimately succumbed in the end, to take out the silver medal. The Camberwell baseball teams, who have been playing every weekend since Easter including over the holidays, continued their season on the weekend. The Under 15 blue team had their grand final game on Saturday in what was a close game throughout. Unfortunately for the team, the boys went down in an incredibly close finish despite the efforts from another outstanding Michael Rigby (Year 8) game. Camberwell also had 4 teams playing in their semi-finals in which three were lucky enough to progress through into the grand final. We wish these boys the best of luck in their endeavours to win Camberwell’s maiden baseball premiership. The Camberwell athletics team had the annual CGS trials last Saturday as the squad looks to improve their results with the AGSV finals only a few weeks away. In the Under 15s, Lucas Waycott (Year 9) ran 12.28s in the 100m, closely followed by Ethan Aw (Year 9) and Ming Zhou (Year 8), showing promising signs for the relay team. Benny Grayson (Year 9) also continued his fine form on the track with times of 56s in the 400m and 16.2s in the hurdles. Jordan Liang (Year 10) looked in fine form, in the Under 16s, running 11.5s in the 100m and 23.28 in the 200m. Jake Ford, Hugo Akse and Connor Laird (all Year 9) all posted some impressive times in the sprints as Connor also threw a season’s best 12.6m in the shot put. In the Under 17s, there were several athletes making their debut for the season, as Sam Rendell (Year 10) posted some Page 4

great results, jumping 1.60m in the high jump and 5.14m in the long jump. Finally, in the Open age group, captain Matt McKenna (Year 12) returned from injury to run 23.21s in the 200m and Taran Laurence (Year 11) demonstrated his strength over the middle distances recording another set of impressive times. It is not too late to sign up for athletics yet, so be sure to register your interest as soon as you can, to be a part of Camberwell’s success in the AGSV Finals in two weeks’ time.
