Edition 72, 22 November 2019

From the Headmaster Building Works and Traffic Flow We have been planning to renovate and expand Kingussie for some time, with a view of moving the Development Office into it. We have now received planning permission from Boroondara Council and have just heard that the builders would like to establish their site and begin work from next week. The works are scheduled to take six months or so to complete. During the works, access to the School property will be somewhat compromised and I ask for your cooperation with School Pick Ups and Drop Offs during this time. The area around Gate 1 in particular will be compromised, so I ask for your patience and cooperation in the following ways: • I would be very grateful if Middle and Senior school families used the Chatfield Avenue Drop Off and Pick Up area, behind the School, leaving Gate 1 access for Junior School families. You may wish to drop your son a block or two away from the School. • The parking spaces in the area in front of Kingussie and fronting Mont Albert Road will be closed to assist with traffic flow in the area. • All staff, parents and visitors parking on site should use the underground car park accessible through Gate 3. • Between 8.00am – 9.00am and 2.30pm – 4.00pm access through Gate 1 will be restricted to Junior School vehicles displaying their name sign. Apologies for the short notice and thank you for respecting these new arrangements which are aimed at keeping our boys safe and traffic flowing.

Year 12 Examinations Our Year 12 students have all now completed their examinations, and we wish them all the very best as we now await their results on Thursday 12 December 2019. This year, for the first time, some offers for tertiary courses will be made before Christmas on Wednesday 18 December, however the main offer round is still in January. Our Careers Counsellor, Mrs Lynette Reiger and other Senior Staff will be at School until Tuesday 17 December to offer assistance and counselling to students, should they wish. Appointments can be made with Mrs Reiger on lar@cgs,vic,edu.au.

Administrative and Medical Information All Pre-prep to Year 11 parents should have received an email this week which included a personalised link to update their administrative information and their son’s medical information. If you have not received this email, please contact Ms Michelle Perna in our Student Records Office on sro@cgs.vic.edu.au. We would be grateful if you could please update your details by Tuesday 26 November 2019.

Last Wednesday 20 November, I attended a Camberwell Grammarians’ lunch in the Camberwell Room, for past students who graduated at least 60 years ago. Over 60 people were in attendance, and it was tremendous to see so many of our most senior community members once more. It was a lovely day for our Old Boys as they caught up with old friends and reminisced about their time at Camberwell Grammar School. I am grateful to our Director of Development, Mr Ryan Whitehead, and his Development Office team for their work in preparing this event.

University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Scholars We were delighted to learn that Isaac Hui (Year 10) has been successful in being awarded a Kwong Lee Dow Scholarship from the University of Melbourne which is an academic enrichment program designed to support high-achieving Victorian secondary school students. While still at School, the program offers opportunities for participation in workshops and seminars, and Isaac will be able to interact with the University and with other Kwong Lee Dow Scholars.

Examinations Our Middle School examinations are now complete. Two levels of the William Angliss Building were converted into an examination centre and the boys gained valuable experience over the examination period. Well done to all of the boys for the calm and focused manner with which they approached the examinations. It is important for the boys to not only reflect on their results but also what they did well through the course of the year; what helped them to learn and how they can embed this in all aspects of their lives. It is all part of the life-long learning that we hope the boys will aspire to. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Sport

It was another round of strong performances and results last weekend, with a winning percentage of approximately 70% across all sports and teams. After impressive starts to the season we have three Firsts teams on top of the ladder at this point of the season - Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball - which sets them up perfectly to push for finals in the second half of the season. Firsts Tennis and Volleyball, in particular, are doing exceptionally well with young teams. While the season is over for most teams, some sports still continue. Squash have their final round this weekend, Firsts Basketball will play a practice match against Melbourne Grammar School at 9.00am in the Sports Centre, while Firsts Cricket take on The Geelong College in a practice match on the KAO starting at 10.00am. Cycling and Kayaking also have events over the next few weeks. A reminder that Summer Sport training will recommence from Thursday 30 January 2020, which is the first day back for students for the year. Firsts teams and some squads may begin training beforehand. Students should check with the teacher in charge of the team/squad. The next round of the AGSV Season, Round 5, is on Saturday 1 February. Please add those dates to your calendar. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Sport can be directed to me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report Taking on ladder leaders PEGS on the KAO, Camberwell lost the toss and were forced to bowl. In perfect batting conditions, PEGS lost their first wicket with the score at 6 thanks to a beautiful swinging delivery from Nicholas Graves (Year 8). After losing their first wicket, PEGS piled on the runs quickly, taking the score above 70 in only the 10th over. Captain Ned Bennett (Year 11) brought himself into the attack to immediate effect, capturing 3 wickets in the next 3 overs. With the game now back in the balance at 4/79, Camberwell were unable to maintain the same intensity in the field and missed a number of chances. Unfortunately, the PEGS batsmen took full advantage. Although Camberwell managed to take another 2 wickets thanks to Lachlan Ross (Year 9) and Nicholas Graves, an unbeaten stand of 120 runs saw PEGS amass 6/318 in their 50 overs. Camberwell batted with great composure during their run chase and kept wickets in hand but were unable to reach the required total. Openers Joshua Pollocks (Year 11) and Joshua Davidson (Year 9) both made good starts of 18 and 17 respectively before being run out, Will Stamper (Year 8) continued his good form with 25 and a late innings flurry of boundaries from Ned Bennett saw him finish unbeaten on 35 runs off only 26 balls. Camberwell finished at 8/153. Facing Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, the 10A Basketball team played with great composure and determination. Refusing to become complacent after an early lead, Camberwell maintained a commanding presence with defensive efforts from Jerry Lu (Year 9). Heading into the second half, their intensity was unmatched as they extended their lead. Harrison Haintz (Year 9) hustled at both ends of the court, whilst Benny Grayson (Year 9) dropped 16 points in a dominant feat. The boys rounded out the match 38 to 17 to record a convincing win. Camberwell’s 1st Tennis faced last year’s premiers, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School in a season defining match. The first sets were tense, as the top pairs won clutch matches in tie-breaks and the other two matches going Camberwell’s way, resulting in comfortable 7-1 lead heading into the singles matches. The new pairing of Lachlan Wei (Year 9) and David Maes (Year 11) was a revelation, with Lachlan’s relentless game setting up many opportunities for David to ruthlessly finish points at the net. The round was sealed with the bottom four singles players winning comfortably. Andy Lee (Year 9) remains undefeated for the season thus far. First seed Matthieu Gibert (Year 8) took a comfortable lead in his match but, against a crafty and experienced opponent, saw his lead whittle away. In a high-quality match, both players played intelligently and with good sportsmanship. PEGS’ first seed eventually prevailed in a tie-break. However, the Camberwell team won overall, 12 sets to 4. The first race of the 2XU triathlon season was held at Elwood beach on Sunday, with cool offshore winds creating choppy seas for the swim. A team of 12 students represented Camberwell, with many competing in their first race. In the Fun Tri race, Ryan Humphries (Year 7), Lucas Rodriguez (Year 7) and Billy Swingler (Year 9) handled the challenging conditions best with Ryan continuing the strong performances he has displayed in the pool to record the fastest Camberwell swim time. Luke completed a rapid bike and run to finish 9th in the 12-13 age group; a fantastic achievement. Billy Swingler’s experience ensured that he recorded an impressive 11th placing in a large field in the 14-15 age group. Ben Gale (Year 8) capitalised on quick transitions and a fast run to be the next Camberwell athlete home. Over the Sprint race, Charlie Chun (Year 9) completed his first distance race alongside triathlon captain Alex Lew (Year 10). The boys endured a longer 500 m swim which was particularly arduous given the cold conditions. A 20 km bike ride, followed by a strong 5 km run resulted in 20th overall for Alex with Charlie just behind in 24th. Camberwell’s 3rd XI Cricket hosted PEGS over the weekend in another close affair. The team sent PEGS to the crease first and consistent pressure from Tom Cooper (Year 9) led to two early wickets falling. Raphael Bird (Year 9) contributed with wickets down the order, leaving Camberwell to chase a target of 122. With Colby Gale (Year 9), Ki Herold (Year 10) and Dan Sunderland (Year 10) amongst the runs, the team were comfortably on target as the match progressed. In the remaining overs of the match a PEGS hat trick threatened to derail a CGS win. However, a calm and collected Sam Lord (Year 11) managed to hit the two runs required off the last ball of the innings for Camberwell to secure the win. The First VI Volleyball team went into their game last weekend full of confidence after registering two wins from two matches. Marcellin, on the other hand, was yet to win a set. Camberwell began strongly, taking out the first set. However, a complacent team allowed Marcellin back into the match and gifted them their first set for the season. Some coaching genius and a change of the line-up meant Camberwell found their feet again and comfortably won the next two sets. The team now go into the break undefeated and sitting in first place on the AGSV ladder. Good luck to all those competing over the summer break. Tom Bowers, Captain of Games (2020) Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Music Gainsford Family Music Prize for Brass This year the Gainsford Family Music Prize for Brass was auditioned on Friday 8 November in the Mallinson School of Music. The Prize has been given through the generosity of Mr and Mrs Gainsford and Family and is awarded annually to a student(s) who has achieved a high degree of proficiency on a brass instrument. This year we welcomed back Mr Christopher Farrands, Head of Brass from Scotch College, a leading brass teacher and performer to adjudicate the Prize. Mr Farrands, having heard many of last year’s applicants, noted significant improvement in the playing and standard of the students. I am pleased to announce that the Gainsford Family Music Prize for Brass was awarded to both Andrew Hare (Trumpet) and Harry Watson (Bass Trombone) (both Year 8). Both performers presented a musically and technically challenging repertoire and their auditions were a culmination of a year’s worth of dedicated practice. All applicants are to be commended on their participation and commitment to improving their playing through preparation for this Prize. Page 4
