Edition 66, 11 October 2019

From the Headmaster Welcome Back to Term 4 A warm welcome back to all members of our Learning Community to Term 4. I hope that all families enjoyed the three week break, and that our students were able to take the time to rest and to gather their strength for the big term which is ahead of us. It was not a three week break for our Year 12 students! It was good to see many of them visiting their teachers for classes, and they all sat practice examinations in the final week. Special thanks to our VCE Co-ordinator, Mr Marcus Jones and Student Services Office Administrator, Ms Jan Sangster, who organised and ran these examinations for our Year 12 and 11 students. We wish them all the very best as they make their final preparations for the coming examinations.

Senior School Office Relocation We have had a very busy term break at School, as our Senior School Office undertook a significant moving program. Our Deputy Head and Head of Senior School, Mr Rob French and his team have relocated to M46 on the top level of the H.R. McDonald Building in preparation for restorations and renovations to their Kingussie Offices, which we hope to have completed some time by the middle of next year. Mr Neal’s office has also been relocated to the top level of the H.R. McDonald Building, to M45. It has been a significant logistical exercise, and I am grateful to our Maintenance Team for their efforts at this time.

Open Day – Saturday 12 October We look forward to welcoming many of you to tomorrow’s Open Day. I hope that you will enjoy the celebration of our community, and to see some of the varied activities which take place at our School commencing at 10.00am. Our Parents’ Association and Friends of Groups have done a wonderful job once more in organising a range of activities and stalls for the day and I greatly appreciate the time and support they continue to give to our School. Many of our students will again act as ambassadors and guides for our visitors – they are our best advertisements. For the first time we will be running an Arts Hub in the quadrangle outside Kingussie – please visit it to see the various performances and activities. The day will conclude with our Cadet Passing Out Parade on the JTO, commencing at 1.00pm. We are delighted that our Cadets will be inspected this year by Major General Justin Ellwood DSC, AM. Please make the time to visit us tomorrow with your sons and to see all of our varied activities and facilities, and also visit our beautiful All Souls Chapel at the very centre of our School. A program for the day can be viewed here. There will be no parking for parents and visitors on site on Saturday. We therefore ask that you please observe our neighbour’s rights if parking in the local area, and I ask in particular that cars are not parked on grass nature strips or across the driveways of surrounding streets.

Mobile Muster at Open Day Towards2050 invites the School Community to visit the Senior School Quadrangle during the Open Day festivities. Amongst many things they will have a large Mobile Muster box set up. You can bring in your old phones, rechargers, headphones and phone batteries, and in one quick visit be rid of all that toxic waste and in exchange Towards2050 are offering a plant for you to grown in your garden. For further information please click the following link https://www.mobilemuster.com.au/recycling.

Grandparents’ Day Grandparents of all present students are warmly invited to visit the School the Tuesday 29 October from 10.00am. There will be a chance for grandparents to spend time with their grandsons commencing with a morning tea, followed by a concert and concluding with a School tour. I encourage all Grandparents to visit us and to see the work being done by your grandsons. A flyer at the end of this Bulletin includes booking details.

We look forward to the leadership that these students, and indeed, all of our senior students will give us next year.

VCE Art and Design Exhibition Our VCE Art, Studio Arts and Visual Communication Design Exhibition was officially opened last night by this year’s Agendo Award recipient Ms Ruby Pilven. Our School has a very strong reputation across the state in the Arts where our most senior Art, Studio Art and Visual Communication and Design students display their folios. All credit must go to Mr David Williamson and his team of teachers who have inspired our students to such heights. I was very pleased to announce the winners of the Headmaster’s Acquisition Awards, which are made each year on this night. This year the awards were made to David Bennie (VCD) for his “Model for Neon Horizon” which was made from found components, to Harry Wall (Art) for his “4 Doll Photos” and to Corey Lyu (Studio Art) for his ceramic sculpture “The Siren’s Call”. Congratulations also to all of our senior artists and to their teachers on a most impressive show. The Senior Art Exhibition is located in the David Williams Gallery in the H.R. McDonald Building and will be open on Open Day, and I do encourage you to visit it.

Free Public Forum: Adolescents - Investing in Future Generations The International Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) Society aims to ensure students make good choices now to ensure a healthy tomorrow. The DOHaD Society is launching a new initiative in 2019. In conjunction with the International Congress they are hosting a Free Public Forum aimed at adolescents (aged 10 to 24), their parents and their teachers. This event will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (South Wharf) on Monday 21 October from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. The panel of researchers and adolescent community leaders will discuss issues faced by youth in today’s society including: Mental Health, Diet and Exercise and Indigenous Health. Their aim is to make this session as interactive as possible with extensive audience participation in the discussion and audio-visual snapshots from experts across Australia. This is a unique opportunity to meet and discuss adolescent health with leading Australian experts in an informal and friendly environment. To register for this free event and find out more, please click the following link http://www.future-gen.com.au.

2019 National Chemistry Quiz In July, a group of Year 11 and 12 Camberwell Grammar School students were invited to participate in this year’s Australian National Chemistry Quiz. Each year, there are over 120,000 entries from over 1400 schools across Australia and overseas. This year Camberwell Grammar School students achieved 23 High Distinctions, which places them in the top 10% of the State. Page 2

Welcome back to Term 4. I hope you managed to spend time together as a family over the holiday period. It has been interesting to hear how the boys spent their time and even better to see them excited to return. This is going to be a super busy Term and I am eager to see how much we can pack in. I hope to see many of you at tomorrow, where the boys are encouraged to invite extended family and friends along to what is always a fun and entertaining day.

Parent Seminar - Adolescent Internet Use Last Wednesday evening, approximately 70 parents attended a fun and informative information session run by Elephant Ed. The session outlined the content of next Monday’s Year 8 workshops on Adolescent Internet Use. The vibrant presenters also covered some of the reasons why the workshops are necessary, described how to capitalise on the workshops once they have been completed. The five take home messages when talking with your children about the topic were: • Talk early and talk often • Avoid fear tactics • Pick the right time and place for the conversations • Be aware of changes in your children • Listen more than you speak Many thanks to all the parents who took the time to come along. Additional information will be disseminated through the Parent Portal once it has been made available.

Koala Kids We will host our annual Walk’a’thon on Wednesday 30 October. Boys will begin fundraising from next week. Koala Kids aim to make a difference to families and kids with cancer and your support is greatly appreciated.

Year 8 Social Tickets were released this week for of the highly anticipated Year 8 Social through this TryBooking link. This event will be held on Friday 25 October, starting at 7.30pm. Page 5

ICT and Innovation Ms Jenny Luca (Head of ICT and Innovation) has already made several exciting developments in the background of the Learning Landscape at CGS since she arrived in Term 2. Parents will shortly be contacted regarding the move away from iPads to laptops from 2020. Boys will be permitted to use iPads for the next two years while we roll this plan out, but if you are looking to purchase a new device in the meantime, it is advised that you get in touch with the IT Department at itadmin@cgs.vic.edu.au. In addition to this, boys will not be expected to purchase a new device in Year 9, as per the current policy, which will be a relief to all parents.

Congratulations On Wednesday evening Sebastian Beck (Year 8)) finished in 1st Place in the Peter Norman Classic at Lakeside Stadium, in a School record time of 23.86 seconds in the 200m Final. This is a huge achievement in a very prestigious competition.

Basketball Congratulations to Ryder Cheesman who has been selected by Basketball Victoria for the U14 Vic metro basketball team to play in the Southern Cross Challenge competition in January. Selections started several months ago with about 300 boys, whittled down over three camps to two teams of 10. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School

It was so good to have the boys back at School refreshed and excited about the Term ahead. I was delighted to hear about their holiday adventures, some around home, and others visiting distant lands. Either way, there were plenty of opportunities to have fun, learn new things and enjoy the company of family and friends. Term 4 is laden with opportunities for boys to demonstrate how much they have grown and mastered over the course of the year. There is no better feeling than completing the year knowing you have given it your best effort in terms of what you achieve and how you conduct yourself. I am sure the boys have thought carefully about their goals and aspirations for the Term ahead. We are all looking forward to Open Day tomorrow and the opportunity to celebrate both what our School has to offer and those who make it what it is – the boys, teachers and parents. Open Day activities in Junior School commence at 10.15am with the Piper Snipers followed by String Ensemble, Twisted Brass on the Junior School Green. Throughout the day there will be performances by various Junior School music groups, as well as the opportunity to visit classrooms and enjoy the food and activities. We are in for a grand day and I look forward to sharing it with you and your families. Boys are to be in school uniform, with summer uniform required for boys involved in performances.

Life Education As part of our drug and health education next Term we are having the Life Education mobile learning centre visit our school from Monday 21 October until Wednesday 23 October. Life Education delivers health and drug education through a unique mobile learning centre environment which helps students to develop strategies and practise the skills required to lead a healthy lifestyle. During this time each class is scheduled to visit the Life Education van. Lessons are age appropriate and the children will be covering a wide range of health related topics, ranging from the human body and how it works, healthy eating and nutrition, medicines and drugs, bullying, resilience and social skills. Healthy Harold, the much-loved Life Education giraffe mascot, is always a much anticipated element of the visit. The sessions are always fun, interactive and really extend and develop the children’s understanding of the topics covered. A Parent Information Session will be held on Monday 21 October from 8.30am to 9.00am in the Life Education van. This session enables parents to visit the mobile unit and see an audio-visual presentation that explains the topics discussed and the approach used by Life Education. These are important, as the concepts introduced need to be reinforced both at home and school. If you are interested in attending please fill in the sheet that was sent home this week.

Walk to School Day and Health Morning - Friday 25 October Walk to School encourages kids to walk, ride or scoot to and from School. It is a great way to help students learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, every day. It also encourages primary schools, local councils and communities to make active travel easy, safe and accessible. Along with the health benefits, walking to school has benefits for the whole community. It reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and even saves the environment! There are so many great reasons to participate in Walk to School this October. Younger children are encouraged to walk with their parents and older children on their own (when their parents decide it is safe). Parents who usually drive their sons to School can drop them just a couple of blocks from School, or park the car a distance from the School and walk in with your sons and thereby also benefiting from the exercise. October is a great time to start walking, because Victoria’s fabulous spring sunshine makes it a pleasure to get out of the house, and the car!

Summer Uniform Just a reminder that boys may choose to use the first month of Term 4 for transition from Winter into Summer uniform. However, after the Melbourne Cup weekend all boys must be in Summer attire. Irrespective of Summer or Winter uniform, hats must be worn from the start of Term 4. No hat no play is our sun smart policy.

Summer Sport training began this week. Students should be fully aware what sport they are participating in and the team they have been allocated to. If not, they should ask at the Sports Office. Some teams are still trialling; however, they will be finalised in the lead up to the first weekend of sport, which is next weekend. At Open Day tomorrow, the Sport Programme will be on full show, with a host of events across our facilities. The Annual CGS Gift will be held on the JTO, along with the student versus Old Boys Hockey match. Old Boys will also play off against our Firsts Tennis team in the morning at Deepdene Tennis Courts. Table Tennis and Fencing will be showcased on Level 4 of the Sports Centre, while the courts on Level 3 will host Badminton, the annual Firsts Basketball versus Old Boys match and the Staff versus Students Volleyball match. The Cricket Development Squad are playing a Twenty20 against themselves on the KAO and this will be followed by the chance to take Soccer penalty kicks. Also around the School, you will see a Football handball competition and a Baseball speed gun stall. Finally, the pool and the weights room will be full of action during the morning as well. Over the holidays, Zac Kelly (Year 10) competed in the Australian Cycling National Championships. In an impressive performance, he won silver in the U17 Time Trial. An outstanding effort to become the second fastest U17 in the country! On Wednesday, Sebastian Beck (Year 8) competed in the 200m at the Peter Norman Classic event at Lakeside Stadium. Recently, a statue of Peter Norman has been placed outside of Lakeside Stadium and the invitational event is held in his honour. Sebastian won the U14 event in a time of 23.86 seconds, which broke the School record (that he set at the AGSV Finals last term). Sessions with Craig Mottram, the former Olympian and Commonwealth Games athlete, will continue throughout Term 4 on Wednesday mornings from 6.45am on the Keith Anderson Oval (KAO). The focus of the sessions is to develop aerobic fitness, resilience, mobility and core training, as well as strength and conditioning. It is a fantastic opportunity for students and it is highly recommended attend. The Cricket and Tennis season launches are being held on Tuesday 15 October and Monday 21 October, respectively. Hosted by the Friends of Groups, they present another chance for students and families to come together and promote their programs. Australian Test Opener and member of the team that retained the Ashes, Mr Marcus Harris, will be the guest speaker at the Cricket launch. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Summer Sport can be directed to me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au.
