Our School production of Hamlet will open next Thursday 9 May and will continue until Saturday 11 May. It is still not too late to get tickets at www.trybooking.com/BBWEP. I am very grateful to our Head of Drama, Mr Andrew Stocker, together with a very eager team of our students, and students from Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College, who have been working tirelessly to put this play together. Thank you to our School Historian and Archivist, Dr David Bird, who delivered a very informative and well researched talk on the history of the Camberwell Grammar School Cadet Unit to the Annual General Meeting of the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion Association at Malvern on 28 April 2019. The Unit and the Association have developed a relationship since 2017 chiefly owing to the distinguished service of Old Boy Alan Moore, who left the School in 1930.

Middle School

Thank you to so many in our community who have looked after each other so well over the past few weeks. There have been several personal matters throughout the Middle School and it has been comforting to observe our community come together during these difficult times - Spectemur Agendo. Boys are reminded to consider who their contact might be at school, should they need to talk. Often this is their Form Teacher; however, it might also be someone else with whom they feel comfortable approaching. It is imperative that they refrain from carrying any burden on their own; no matter how large or small.

By Our Deeds Inquiry Day (BODi Day) On Thursday 16 May, our Year 7 cohort will participate in the inaugural Middle School BODi Day, following the theme: “Overall Health and Wellbeing”. All activities will be held on-site, in lieu of regular classes. Activities include Yoga, Boot Camp, Tai Chi, Spin, Pilates as well as Nutrition and Gaming Seminars. More information will be distributed closer to the time. A special thank you to Ms Elizabeth Grant and her sub-committee of Mr Satori, Mr Zagarn and Mr Wyatt for all of the planning and organisation that has gone into the day.

University of Melbourne Mathematics Competition Commendation to all the boys who took part in this prestigious mathematics competition last Wednesday. Results will be made available next week.

Winter Sport Winter Sports training began this week with the first round of competition starting tomorrow. Best of luck to all teams. A reminder that boys are permitted to wear their school tracksuit home from sports practice and are advised to pack a dry set of clothes on these days. For hygiene purposes, boys are expected to change into their school clothes following PE, prior to returning to class.

School Tours Many thanks to the student volunteers who guided many prospective parents around the school on Tuesday morning. The feedback from many of our visitors was outstanding and I congratulate the boys for their courage to lead these tours.

William Angliss Dinner A reminder about the William Angliss Dinner on Thursday 16 May. This night is provided especially for parents of Middle School boys and always proves to be a great occasion. Our guest speaker is Mr Steven Dupon, who will be providing the latest information about gaming and devices. Steven is the Founding Director of the Institute of Games. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

With great sense of occasion, the Junior School community gathered to commemorate ANZAC Day. In a moving ceremony, we paused to reflect upon the sacrifices that were made with a focus this year on the allied landings in April on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Our young presenters were thoughtful and dignified as they led the reflections. Congratulations to William Lardner of Year 7 for his beautiful playing on the bugle of the Last Post and the Rouse to conclude our ceremony.

Music News After a relaxing Easter holiday, all Junior School Music Ensembles are back to weekly rehearsals as the boys master their performance skills. Preparation for our Year 3 – 5 Musical production The Amazing Adventures of Superstan is also well underway. Please note the following dates for Junior School Music performances this Term: • Week 6 –- Mid Year Concert (Junior School Orchestra, Junior School Choir, Chamber Singers) Thursday 30 May at 7.30pm in PAC • Week 7 – Junior School Soiree – Tuesday 4 June at 6.00pm in the Music and Movement Centre • Week 10 – Year 3/4/5 Musical production – Tuesday 25 June at 1.00pm, Wednesday 26 June at 7.00pm and Thursday 27 June at 7.00pm in Middleton Theatre Helen Thomas, Assistant Director of Music, Junior School

NAPLAN Testing Week Years 3 and 5 boys will be undertaking the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) on 14 to 17 May. Each phase of the assessment will be conducted at the beginning of the day or in the block between recess and lunch. To assist in preparing the boys for their day we would like to ask that they get a reasonable night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast. Preparation for NAPLAN has been ongoing and the boys are familiar with the format of the testing and the writing genre that is being assessed this year. However, if you have any concerns about your son’s readiness, the assessment or any aspect of the week please contact the class teacher.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

Mother’s Day Breakfast

Junior School Library

What could be better than mum and son sitting down to a nice cup of coffee/hot chocolate and breakfast before the business of the day gets started? On Friday 10 May, Mums from Pre Prep to Year 5 will have that opportunity as we hold another Mother’s Day breakfast morning to coincide with Mother’s Day. The Camberwell Room will be set up with tables and chairs, and coffee will be served from 7.00am so that those who have to dine and dash can do so. Mums are invited to come and go at a time that suits them between 7.00am and 8.40am. The boys will be singing at 8.00am.

Junior School Library We have had a great start to Term 2 with all classes now completing their first Library lessons. A reminder for boys to return their books before school on the day of their Library lesson. For those boys with before school music commitments, Mrs Maryanne Walker has organised a library book drop-off box at some of these sessions. Junior Library staff are very excited and delighted by the Prep to Year 5 boys’ participation in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. The Challenge encourages boys to read a set number of books and record their efforts online. We currently have over 60 boys registered and taking part. Well done boys! We are offering one last opportunity to register your son. If boys would like to take part they can collect an information letter from the library. Parents please email Mrs Walker at mhw@cgs.vic.edu.au for registrations. Please contact Junior Library staff if you have any questions. Parents please come in and explore our extensive parent collection. We have a wide range of excellent parenting resources that you are very welcome to borrow. Our latest addition is the highly recommended title ‘Raising Readers: How to nurture a child’s love of books’ by Megan Daley. Happy reading! Michele Rutter, Head of Junior School Library

Jump Rope for Heart This year our School is once again participating in Jump Rope for Heart – a fantastic physical activity and fundraising program by the Heart Foundation that has been running for 35 years. Since Jump Rope for Heart started in 1983, schools like ours have raised more than $75 million for the Heart Foundation’s lifesaving work. Jump Rope for Heart is a great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs. We have lots of skipping ropes and boys are encouraged to practice at recess and lunchtime. Boys from Prep to Year 5 will participate in the ‘jump off’, 45 minutes of skipping activities in Term 3 on Friday 19 July in the Junior School playground. We encourage every boy to participate but they need your help to register online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising. Information on how to do this went home with your son earlier this week. Traditionally our boys do not receive the online bonus prizes. We have donated the prizes, or a voucher for the total worth of the prizes, to a Migrant Resource Centre. Page 5

Sport

With the Firsts Football and Soccer results last weekend, the Winter Mitre Shield is well and truly up for grabs this weekend when Firsts Hockey play Trinity in the deciding fixture. The school that wins at least two matches of the three sports wins the Mitre Shield. It has been some time since we’ve held the trophy and it would be great to have it back on Camberwell soil. Good luck to everyone involved in the first official round of AGSV Winter Sport this weekend, especially to the Year 7s competing in Winter for the first time, and the Year 12s who begin their final Winter season for the School. Students will have received information regarding their fixtured sport and transport schedule (where applicable) during Sport Meetings on Friday or by communication through Schoology or email. Sport Fixtures can also be accessed on the Parent Portal, along with the Uniform Booklet which outlines the required uniform for each sport. A reminder that students are required to fulfil their sport commitments, both training and matches. Notification must be sent to the staff member in charge of your son’s sport team or to the Sports Department prior to training or matches if your son is ill or injured and unable to participate. For your reference, my email is dos@cgs.vic.edu.au.

SPORT REPORT Round 1 of the AGSV cross country was held at Marcellin in cold and windy conditions. The Senior team competed well with Tom Bowers (Year 11) finishing an impressive 3rd overall. With sizeable contributions from Taran Lawrence (Year 11), Harry Swingler and Captain Alexander Seidler (both Year 12), the team finished in third place. Jimmy Smith, Emmanuel Yassa (both year 10) and Thomas Power (Year 9) led the Intermediate team to a strong finish, with all racers ending with great times and increased confidence for the coming races. The Junior squad made their debut for the School in this race and much to the delight of all the coaches and parents, Camberwell had two runners in the top 10, with Harrison Car (Year 7) and Jack Dobbyn (Year 8) performing admirably. Friday also saw the First XVIII Football team hold their annual match against Trinity as they fought for the Mitre Cup. In cold, blustery conditions Camberwell were forced to kick into the wind in the first quarter. The boys were able to hold off numerous inside 50’s by Trinity, rebounding the ball from half back and eventually delivering to Finn Weston (Year 11) to kick the first goal of the season. This saw Trinity ahead by only a goal going into quarter time. Much to their disappointment, however, the team was unable to capitalise with the wind in the second quarter as Trinity extended their lead, despite captain Ryan Walsh’s (Year 12) explosive run off half back. Camberwell were able to stem the flow of goals in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late as Trinity came away victors. Also competing for their Mitre Cup, The First XI Soccer team came into their match looking to start their season on a high against quality competition. Camberwell were able to get behind Trinity’s defence thanks to great running by Lachie Waycott (Year 11); however, the team was unable to convert on the chances they were given. With neither team willing to give an inch for the majority of the first half, Camberwell were able to take the lead, thanks to a thumping free kick from Dean Christofilopoulos (Year 11), which ricocheted off the crossbar to Dimitri Topatsis (Year 11), who headed it home comfortably. The team went into half time with a strong focus on defence, committed to doing whatever they needed to maintain their lead. Goalkeeper and captain Niko Verrios (Year 12), Chris Han (Year 12) and debutant Blake Pearson (Year 10) were able to do just that as the boys kept a clean sheet; a promising sign for the games to come. As the whistle blew on full time, Camberwell came away with their first Mitre Cup win in recent years. Hopefully, this will encourage the team to push for their first finals appearance in several seasons. I would like to extend a huge thank you for all those who came down to support both the soccer and football teams last Friday. As all boys who played will tell you, having your support there was an incredible boost and it was great to have a sea of Camberwell boys watching and encouraging our teams. The First Hockey team will now compete this weekend as they battle it out to bring their Mitre Cup back home. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games

Christmas Pudding Preparation Has Begun! 2019 marks the 35th year that the GGS Auxiliary has overseen the making, selling and donating of traditional Christmas Puddings. While the puddings are delicious, the CGS crested bowls ubiquitous, and the funds raised have enhanced the school environment, the best thing about the puddings is the fun we have in making them! Come along and share in the camaraderie as we chop, soak, zest, pour, measure and mix our way to making more than 700 puddings. Please see the flyer containing further information on our Pudding preparation days. For any queries please contact thecgsauxiliary@gmail.com.

Cafeteria Roster The Auxiliary is seeking assistance from parents who are available to volunteer one or two mornings per Term, to assist staff in the Cafeteria. We ideally would like to have two parent volunteers per day. The hours are 9.30am to 1.00pm. It is a fun way to meet other parents and feel connected to the Camberwell Grammar School community. If you are interested, the cafeteria roster for Term 2 of 2019 is now open. Please volunteer by clicking on the link below. If you are able, please fill in the first two weeks as that greatly helps with the organising. Please visit www.volunteersignup.org/MBMW7.
