Year 7 - Lord Somers Camp
Middle School
Our Year 7 students returned this afternoon from Lord Somers Camp, and all reports suggest that they have had a wonderful time. The students quickly settled into camp routines and had a great deal of fun trying to solve the various challenges put before them. These activities provide an opportunity for the boys to cement new friendships and allow them to feel more comfortable with their new classmates. I am very grateful to all the staff who have been involved in this camp enabling our students to have such wonderful adventures and opportunities, and particularly to our Middle School Staff members and our Outdoor Education Coordinator, Mr Rhys Thomas who has done so much of the work to coordinate the camp.

Each year the GTAV (Geography Teachers’ Association of Victoria) award VCE Certificates of Excellence, recognising student achievement in the study of Geography and in acknowledgement of the professionalism and dedication of their Geography teachers. Congratulations to the following students from CGS who were recognised for their achievements in VCE Geography in 2018: • Year 12 (2018) – Connor Xu and Lachlan Thompson • Year 12 (2019) – Aidan Chu, Jasper Guthrie and Christopher Han It was my pleasure at yesterday’s Assembly to present Aidan, Jasper and Christopher with their certificates.
CGS and CGGS Parent Education Seminar A reminder that our next Parent Education Seminar on Healthy, Happy Families will take place on Tuesday 12 March 2019 at 7.00pm in the Camberwell Room in the Sports Centre. Our guest speaker on the evening will be Adolescent Psychologist, Mr Andrew Fuller. Middle School Congratulations to Mrs Elliott Congratulations to Mrs Justine Elliot on her appointment as EA to the Deputy Headmaster/Head of Senior School, Mr Rob French. During the past seven successful years of running the Middle School Office, she has assisted many boys and families in navigating their way through critical periods of their lives. We all thank Mrs Elliott for all you have done and wish you the very best in your exciting new role.

Well done to our Year 7 boys, who enjoyed a superb week at Lord Somers Camp. The camp is perfectly positioned in Term 1 to help motivate our boys to get even more out of their opportunities at CGS. I was most impressed with the team work and support that the boys showed each other throughout the week; further strengthening their foundation at CGS. The program has been developed and shaped by many boys and staff over our long association with Lord Somers. In fact, I am sure that many of the Old Boys will recall their time at this camp. The program included initiative exercises, stand up-paddle boarding, kayaking, marine discovery, surf lifesaving, hiking, screen printing and pizza making. The program also included a variety of night-time activities, including sports, movie night, charades and trivia. I trust that the boys will also return feeling a deeper sense of connection with their Form Group and our School community. A very special thank you to all the form teachers and support staff who gave up their time to assist our boys through this challenging camp, and helping them create critical bonds to ensure that they get the most out of their time at CGS.

Year 7 Mums and Sons Breakfast Next Thursday 14 March, we have the Year 7 Mums and Sons Breakfast in the PAC foyer from 7.00am. It is always a great morning, so I encourage Year 7 mothers to come along to enjoy breakfast with their sons and other parents. Guest speakers are School Captain Jack Amling (Year 12) and Cooper Carbone (Year 8). The boys will share their experiences of Year 7 and some advice on how to get the most out of Year 7 and at school. Please click here to book.
Alcohol Education - Year 8 Year 8 took part in an ‘Alcohol Education’ presentation with Xavier Diaz in the Camberwell Room on Thursday 7 March. It is important that our boys are aware of the risks associated with underage drinking, why some people do drink under-age and the benefits of adopting or maintaining healthy habits.
Long Weekend I wish all families well for the long weekend. Term 1 is typically a very busy time in most schools, as new routines are established. As such, all parents, boys and staff deserve a well-earned break. The long weekend provides an excellent opportunity recharge your batteries in readiness for the final weeks of Term.

On Friday 1 March, all Year 3, 4 and 5 boys competed in the Junior School Inter-House Swimming Carnival at Camberwell Grammar School Sports Centre. All boys competed in a variety of individual and relay events. Congratulations to Derham/Schofield who are the overall 2019 Interhouse Swimming Champions. Final points were Derham/Schofield with 268 points, Clifford/Steven with 215 points, Bridgland/Summons with 178 points and Macneil/Robinson with 171 points. Special congratulations go to the Year 5 Clifford/Steven freestyle relay team (Melvin Zhang, Samuel Li, Louis Zhang and Isaac Chen) that broke the record previously held by Clifford/Steven (2018-2.40.9) with a new time of 2.35.8. Parking And Drop Off/Collection Procedures As we are in the middle of Term, it is timely that I request your continued observance of the parking and drop off/collection procedures. In particular: • Please display ‘name sign’ on your windscreen or dashboard. It helps us immensely to quickly give you the right boy. • Please do not arrive early to collect your son as it just congests the flow of traffic. Prep-Year 2 boys arrive at 3.00pm; Year 3-5 boys arrive after 3.15pm. • Please avoid turning right into Gate 1 from Mont Albert Road. • Just a gentle reminder also, the classes start at 8.40am and all boys, Prep to Year 5, should have arrived at school and be ready for the day by that time. Later arrivals make it difficult for the boys concerned and the teacher. • Drop your son a block or two from school and encourage him to walk, it is a healthy way to start the morning but will also relieve traffic congestion to Kingussie.

Congratulations to the Firsts Table Tennis squad for winning the AGSV Premiership last Saturday. In what was a commanding season, the squad finished it in style with a 15-0 victory against Trinity. Nathan Shi (Year 11) led the team well and spoke exceptionally at the post-match presentation. With a young squad, we look certain for continued success in the sport for years to come. The AGSV Summer season has finished and, with the long weekend, there is no sport scheduled this weekend. However, some sports still have training and competitions after this weekend, including Cycling, Kayaking, Lawn Bowls, Orienteering, Squash, Swimming and Triathlon. Students should check with the teacher in charge of their team if they are unsure of their sporting commitments. The Volleyball presentation night took place on Monday evening and it was fantastic to acknowledge the efforts of the students in the sport. Thank you to Frank Bite (parent) and Liam Gibson (Firsts Coach) for organising the evening. Basketball are next to host their presentation evening on Wednesday, followed by Cricket and Tennis. Invitations have sent and it would be great to have as many students and parents attending as possible. Organised through Friends of Groups, they are fun and enjoyable evenings to celebrate the season and to recognise student achievements. Colours for Firsts teams are being determined and will be advertised at the Sports Office soon. Students will be notified through daily notices. When they are published, students will have one week to view and make any disputes. Some Winter Sport trials for Firsts teams have already commenced. Notifications have been published in the daily notices and if students are still unaware, they should contact the staff member in charge of the sport or see me in the Sports Office. Winter teams and training schedules will be distributed soon. Students should check the daily notices and keep an eye out around the Sports Office. Running sessions with Craig Mottram and his team will take place for the remainder of Term 1 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. The sessions start at 6.45am on the KAO and are open to students of all ages and abilities. The focus of the sessions is to improve running technique, endurance and speed.
Social Media Keep up to date with news and information by following the School Sport’s social media: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TeamAPP (or download from the App Store).
Sport Report After remaining undefeated for the whole season, the Firsts Table Tennis team faced Trinity in the AGSV grand final on Saturday. Camberwell started extremely well, led by Ethan Tang (Year 11) and Captain Nathan Shi (Year 11), who put Trinity on the back foot. Camberwell continued their brilliance all throughout the match as we won with ease, the scores ending up Camberwell 15 rubbers, 45 games to Trinity 0 rubbers, 8 games. The Cycling Squad raced in the Geelong Criterium on Saturday on a track that would prove to be difficult with numerous sharp turns on a tight course. Zac Kelly (Year 10) once again starred as he retained the overall series jersey, coming third in his race. In the senior male A group, Logan Taplin (Year 9) recorded a great time finishing a close third while in the B group, despite his tyre deflating at the start line and starting a whole lap behind everyone else, Jonathan Seeley (Year 10) rode incredibly well to finish in an admirable 6th place. The team now looks ahead to try and improve their times in their last two races for the season. In warm conditions and flat seas, the Triathlon Team headed to Elwood to compete in the Victorian All Schools competition. On the back of their strenuous training and pure determination, Camberwell achieved some outstanding results, highlighted by an amazing 4th place finish by Jack Amling (Year 12) who fell agonisingly short of a podium finish in 17-19 year old bracket. Also competing in the 17-19 bracket, Charlie Harper and Harry Swingler (both Year 12) both finished inside the top 20 as they recorded strong times across all 3 legs. In the 15-16 year race which consisted of a 400 m swim, 10 km bike ride and 4km run, Camberwell were strongly represented by strong efforts from Alex Lew (17th) (Year 10), Charlie Chun (25th) (Year 9) and Billy Swingler (29th) (Year 9). Four Camberwell students competed in the first round of the Victorian Athletics Championship over the weekend at Lakeside Stadium. Competing in the Under 20 age group Matthew McKenna (Year 12) and Camberwell Old Boy Dilina de Silva, finished 16th and 9th respectively in the 400 m against the state’s best athletes. In the Under 17s, Jordan Liang (Year 10) finished 11th in his 100 metre sprint, recording 11.66 seconds. Kai Sapolu (Year 9) received a podium finish in his pole vault attempts, while also just missing out on a medal in triple jump. Tom Bowers (Year 11) excelled in his 1500 m race as he completed the race in just over 4 minutes to finish in 5th. In their final match of the season, the 8A cricket team looked to continue their undefeated season in a match up against arch rivals Trinity. The team was sent in to bat as Will Lombardi and Thomas Newman sent a solid base for the team to build on. Will Stamper continued his excellent run of form of late, notching up yet another 50 not out for the season. With 4 overs to go, Lachlan Harker made a quick fire 21 to lift the team to a credible 3 for 103. In reply, Trinity started strong as they put on 61 in their 2nd wicket partnership however thanks to some smart bowling from Owen Cox, the team got the breakthrough they were so desperately looking for. Nick Graves and Lachlan Harker bowled with consistent line and length to dry up Trinity’s run rate and come away with a win by 9 runs. Now that the AGSV summer season is officially over, I would like to congratulate all the Year 12s on their considerable contributions to their respective sports over the last 6 years. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Music Students’ Recitals
Year 7 - Lord Somers Camp
Throughout the year, the Music School runs a series of Music Students’ Recitals. They are aimed at providing valuable performance experience, in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere, for instrumental students in the Middle and Senior Schools. As of next week, students will be able to register for the Term 1 Recital which is to be held in Week 9 on Wednesday 27 March, 7.30pm. To do this, boys who learn their instrument at school will need to speak to their Instrumental Teacher, who can add their name and performance information to the sign-up list. For boys who learn outside of school, this form should be completed, signed by their teacher and returned to the Music Office no later than Thursday 14 March. Please note, if a member of the Music Staff is requested as an accompanist, the music for that accompaniment must be provided at the time of registration. The aim is for these recitals to run no longer than 90 minutes. Once this time limit has been reached, the recital will be closed until next term.
