From the Headmaster
Thank you to all families and students who attended the services in memory of Mr Mark Williams last Friday and Tuesday. Mr Williams had a big impact on so many people, and it was great to be able to pay our respects and to offer our support to his family. It was touching to see so many past students return – he clearly had touched their lives and it was lovely to hear their stories and anecdotes about their times with this special teacher.
Parent Education Seminar Our next Parent Education seminar will be held on Wednesday 14 August, when Professor Michael Gordon will speak on the subject Building Resilient Teenagers. Dr Gordon is a past parent of our School and is considered a leading expert on adolescent mental health issues. More details can be found in the flyer attached to this Bulletin. Please let Mr John Allen know if you are intending to come at mja@cgs.vic.edu.au.
Blokes’ Book Breakfast We look forward to welcoming boys and their fathers to our Blokes’ Book Breakfast on Wednesday 21 August from 7.00am to 8.30am. The Breakfast is an annual event for Middle and Senior School and offers fathers the opportunity to spend some time with their sons sharing a mutual love for books and reading. Each year our speakers share their own journey as a reader and writer and their individual approach to writing. They inspire us to read, to write and to tell our own stories. Our guest this year is Mr Michael Gerard Bauer, an internationally acclaimed author whose writing has received a number of awards both in Australia and overseas. Further information including booking details is in the attached flyer. For any enquiries email: circulation@cgs.vic.edu.au. To book tickets please go to: www.trybooking.com/BECVD
Brain Bee Competition The Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) is a competition for high school students in Year 10 to learn about the brain and its functions, learn about neuroscience research, find out about careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses. After a rigorous individual round, 30 teams were invited to participate in the State Final at the Florey Centre, University of Melbourne. Camberwell made it through to the final with three other teams and did particularly well in a tight contest to once again win by half a point from MLC. This is the second year in a row that Camberwell Grammar has been awarded first place and the team was presented with another brain model and individual prizes. I invited Year 10 students Nick Robinson, Aidan Harris, James Stambe and Isaac Hui to the stage to receive their trophy. Paul Hicks, Headmaster
Middle School School Tours Many thanks to the boys who showed prospective CGS families around the School on Tuesday. Learning about the School through the boys’ eyes is a great way to engage with the School and a great opportunity for our boys to challenge themselves. This is one of many great legacies established by Mr Peter O’Connell and Ms Tracey Hayes in the Admissions Office. Projec10 On Wednesday Year 8 boys hosted Fintona and Camberwell Girls Grammar School for the final planning session ahead of the 2019 Projec10 Entrepreneurship Program. This is an exceptionally creative cohort, who have proposed ideas from lemonade stands to a Dunk’a’Teacher Tank. CGS will be hosting a Fete at lunch on Friday 13 September, where many groups will be selling their products in a bid to raise funds for Opportunity International.
Year 6 Round Robin Page 1
Congratulations to our Year 6 Boys who represented the School at the Inter-School Round Robin at PEGS on Tuesday. The boys put in a huge effort in several sports, including AFL, soccer, handball and tennis.

Junior School Poem in Your Pocket Throughout this term all Junior School boys are encouraged to memorise one of their favourite poems. They can keep a copy of it in their pocket to pull out and practise when they can. Boys can present their poem to their class and Mr Howard Kelly is always keen to hear boys recite their poems. Some will be chosen to present to the weekly Assembly. Parents might like to share some of their favourite poems with their son, or help him choose one that might capture his imagination and enthusiasm to learn by heart.
Jump Rope for Heart Jump Rope for Heart has concluded for 2019 with our fundraising achieving well above our target. A few boys were very active with fundraising and between them raised $4369. Particular mention must go to Thomas Pritchett (Year 4) who raised over $1400 and Lucas Morey (Year 3) who raises a significant amount every year. Since first participating, our Junior School has raised over $35,000 for heart research. I would like to thank those boys who participated in finding sponsors and raising funds, and all boys, for their enthusiasm in our final event which was a ‘jump off’ on Friday 19 July. At CGS the fundraising supports two groups that do important work: The Heart Foundation which uses the funds for ongoing research and investigation into heart disease and the Footscray Migrant Centre where our shopping voucher ensures the children at the centre have new play equipment. Our top fundraisers graciously forfeit their prizes so that the equivalent amount is converted into a shopping voucher. If you would still like to donate, please go to jumprope.org.au, the site has reopened and will close Friday 2 August. Diane Collins, Deputy Head Administration, Junior School
Parent Information Session - Emotional Intelligence Parents of boys in Prep to Year 5 are invited to attend an information session on Tuesday 30 July in the Camberwell Room from 8.50am to 10.20am. Mrs Maryanne Kapoulitsas, Emotional Intelligence Schools Consultant from Swinburne, Mrs Caroline Gatley Deputy Head, Curriculum and Mr Tristen Haines, Year 4 Class Teacher, will be giving a talk on Emotional Intelligence. This presentation is geared to helping parents understand the importance of this program and provide strategies and understandings that can be implemented at home. Page 2

Sport
Two rounds remain in the AGSV Winter Season. Firsts Hockey and Soccer have big games this weekend, with their semi-finals being played at Elgar Park at 4.00pm today and at Trinity’s sports grounds at 10.00am on Saturday. We wish both teams the best of luck! If you can come, it would be great to see some CGS support at both matches. Keep a lookout for information regarding end of season presentation nights. Hosted by the Friends of Groups, they are always fantastic, with outstanding guest speakers and plenty of awards to be presented. Winter Colours will be advertised in the coming weeks and students who represented their sport at the top level will be notified in the Daily Notices. Spring Sport gets underway in Week 4, straight after the completion of the Winter Season. Details have already been released, but students interested in participating in Athletics and Water Polo should speak to Mr Mark Mews and Mr Paul Double, respectively, if they wish to be involved. Athletics, in particular, requires depth in the squad, so it would be incredible to see a host of students at the track as we push towards the Premiership. Congratulations to Otto Zhao (Year 10), who recently gained selection in the Badminton Australia Team to compete at the Junior Badminton World Federation Championships in Russia later this year. Cody Greenwood (Year 9) competed in the South Australian Short Course Swimming Titles recently and performed exceptionally. Of his 17 events, he won 16 medals, including 12 gold medals. Most impressively, Cody made 12 Swimming Victoria Open Short Course qualifying times. Good luck to Yanning Zhang (Year 9), Ryder Cheesman (Year 7) and William Watson (Year 6) as they represent the School and the state at the School Sports Australia Swimming Championships next week. If you have any concerns or questions regarding Sport, contact the staff member in charge of your son’s team or contact the Director of Sport at dos@cgs.vic.edu.au. Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport
Music Music Students’ Recitals As of next week, students will be able to register for the Term 3 Recital which is to be held in Week 5 on Thursday 15 August at 7.30pm. To do this, boys who learn their instrument at School will need to speak to their instrumental teacher, who can add their name and performance information to the sign-up list. For boys who learn outside of School, this attached form should be completed, signed by their teacher and returned to the Music Office no later than Friday 2 August. Please note, if a member of the Music Staff is requested as an accompanist, the music for that accompaniment must be provided at the time of registration. The aim is for these recitals to run no longer than 90 minutes. Once this time limit has been reached, the recital will be closed until next Term. Greg Roberts, Head of Keyboard
3MBSFM Fine Music Melbourne On Tuesday night, four of our VCE Music Performance students appeared in a live 3MBSFM broadcast, on the program ‘In Performance’. Flautist Rhys Campbell (Year 11), baritone Louis Le (Year 12), cellist Sebastian Csutoros (Year 12) and pianist Matthew Wu (Year 11) performed solo pieces from their VCE program live on air. They were then interviewed about life as a musician at Camberwell Grammar, their role models and the pieces they aspire to perform. A podcast of the show will be available to download soon – stay tuned! Congratulations Rhys, Louis, Seb and Matthew, and thank you for representing our School in such a positive manner. Page 3

Artists In Residence This week, German-based violin virtuoso and pedagogue Danny Gu was Artist-in-Residence at the Music Academy. He worked with our violinists over three days in private lessons. On Friday afternoon, he dazzled the violin class with his performance during the Friday Academy program. We are very grateful to Mr Gu for inspiring our violinists. Ben Bishop, Director of Music
From the Chaplain A Blessing In Hard Times We are a good community, a great School, Camberwell Grammar School. This does not shield us from the mess and pains of this life. But being together and leaning on God , helps us through. Psalm 46 God is Our Strength and our Foundation, a very present help in times of trouble. Through this difficult time our Parent Prayer Group has upheld us in prayer and many thanks again to ‘The Angels’ who take dinners and practical support to those in need. We pray: Lord God, Heavenly Father we at Camberwell Grammar School journey together, knowing your presence and seeking your strength through these difficult times. Thank you for your love to us all and those we are remembering. Bless us in the Name of our Loving Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen Rev. Charles Butler

Christmas Puddings - We need your help! Mixing Days The Christmas Pudding preparation has well and truly begun. A big thank you to all who have helped chop, zest and weigh so far. Our mixing and cooking days are now in sight! This part of the process requires ‘many hands to make light work’ and to make it easy the two-hour Friday morning mixing sessions have been divided into year levels. Absolutely no baking skills are required, and even if you can only spare an hour it is very much appreciated. If you cannot make your year levels allocated day, feel free to jump into one of the others, everyone is welcome to any or all sessions! These sessions are a great opportunity to meet and chat with other parents. There has been a lot of laughs and stories shared already! If you have time stay after the preparation is done for a cuppa and some morning tea. Please visit www.volunteersignup.org/9EPC7 to let us know that you would like to join in and be part of this fantastic CGS tradition which raises significant funds for the School and spreads a bit of cheer through our community every Christmas. Cooking Days The Auxiliary are also looking for volunteers to help with the pudding cooking which we do over the weekend following each mixing day using the CGS Camberwell Room Kitchen ovens. It only takes fifteen minutes of your time to unload a batch and load in the next and if we have plenty of helpers it lightens our load. Detailed instructions and a demonstration will be given. For any queries please contact thecgsauxiliary@gmail.com. Pudding Orders Trybooking will be open for pudding orders from Monday 29 July. Please visit www.trybooking.com.com/BBAGF to place your order or fill in the order form here and return the Development Office. Puddings can be collected from as early as mixing day two, Friday 9 August in the Camberwell Room of the Sports Centre (Level 3).
