From the Acting Headmaster Hamlet Our play Hamlet performed to sell out houses last week in the Middleton Theatre and was absolutely outstanding. I believe that the show achieved a quality and professionalism rarely seen in schools. I was totally in awe of how the students memorised so many of Shakespeare’s lines; they delivered them as if they were a natural language to them to a captivated audience. Plays such as this remind us of what extraordinary things our students can achieve with the right encouragement, commitment and persistent hard work. My thanks and congratulations to our Head of Drama, Mr Andrew Stocker, who always manages to get such professional and seamless performances from all the students in every play he directs. My thanks also to his team who worked so closely with the cast teaching them their lines, designing their costumes and helping with all that occurs backstage. I am also very grateful and thank the girls from Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College, who performed key roles at such a highly professional standard. Thank you also to all of the staff who offered their support and time to the play. Without the commitment, dedication and generosity of staff at our School, this play simply could not have happened. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew and thanks for a wonderful evening in the Theatre.
Mid-Year Concert – Thursday 30 May at 7.30pm I am now looking forward to our next major event in our School Calendar, our Mid-Year Concert, which will be held on Thursday 30 May in the Performing Arts Centre. The William Angliss Dinner Thank you to all the parents who attended our annual William Angliss Dinner last night in the Camberwell Room. Our guest speaker, Mr Steven Dupon from the Institute of Games, spoke about the potential risks and benefits of gaming and the opportunity to strengthen our bonds with our children through mutual ‘agreements’. Steven presented a very interesting and informative discussion on how we can support and discuss with our boys the potential risks they may be faced with now and during their formative years. I am most appreciative to all the parents and teachers who attended, and thank you to our Head of Middle School, Mr Troy Stanley and to our Development Office for organising a very successful and informative evening.
Parents Using Schoology – Viewing your Son’s Progress Schoology is playing an increasingly important role in the learning of our students and in teachers’ communication with parents. Because teachers provide written feedback to students through Schoology on a continual basis about their learning, no written comments will be provided by subject teachers in Semester reports. Parents are now able to monitor the progress of their son(s) regularly, in real time, rather than waiting until the end of the semester. Next term, we will be working with the Alliance Française de Melbourne and Camberwell Girls Grammar School to offer a preparation course for the DELF Junior examinations. These examinations are specifically designed for secondary school students who would like to obtain an official recognition of their level of proficiency in French. The course will run at Camberwell Grammar School, once a week, for 10 weeks. Enrolments and payments will be made directly to the Alliance Française. Bond University Mooting Competition Last week a group of students consisting of Rohan Hodges (Year 11) and (Year 12) students Nicholas Gooden, Alan Jiang, Jai Singh, Thomas Lee and Lachlan Melville travelled to Queensland to participate in the Bond University mooting competition, which is a legal mock court room competition. I was pleased to present the boys with their certificates at yesterday’s Assembly.

The annual Gladwyn Cup competition was held last week and once again it proved to be a very lively afternoon’s debate centred on diplomacy and skill, with each of the 17 countries pitting their wits against each other on 3 Resolutions involving Water Safety, North Korea and The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. While Egypt, the United Kingdom, the Russian Federation and France were commended on their performances, the Cup was awarded to the United States of America this year, represented by (Year 12) students Oliver Papillo and Lachlan Doig, who were presented with the cup at yesterday’s Assembly.

BODi Day Strengthening our mental health is critical to help us maximise our day and help to deal with obstacles that may present themselves. Yesterday, Year 7 took part in the inaugural Middle School BODi Day; a day that provided the boys with an opportunity to experience activities that enhance their mental health. Experienced instructors were on hand to guide our boys through Yoga, Pilates, Spin, Boot Camp, Ti Chi, Kung Fu as well as seminars on Nutrition and Gaming. All presenters spoke glowingly of the way in which the boys took part in each of their activities, demonstrating maturity well beyond their years. A huge thank you to the organising committee led by Ms Elizabeth Grant.
William Angliss Dinner Following on from BODi Day, over 100 parents attended the 10th Annual William Angliss Dinner. Our guest speaker, Mr Steven Dupon from the Institute of Games, spoke candidly about the potential risks and benefits of gaming and the opportunity to strengthen our bonds with our children through mutual ‘agreements’. The boys also heard from Mr Dupon, so it will be a great opportunity for parents to sit down with their boys to discuss this topical matter. Year 8 Math’s Games Day On Monday 13 May, Our Middle School Mathematics Coordinator, Mr Mark Mews accompanied Owen Henderson, Shivansh Kakkar, Abhinav Gujjari, Andy Congshen, Ming Zhou, Tom Nguyen, Jet Chao, William Zhang to the Math’s Games Day at Scotch College. The boys encountered several mathematics puzzles and problem-solving games including ‘Mathematictactoe’ and a Tetris related game involving ‘pentominos’. Our team finished in 2nd place overall and, most importantly, had a really exciting day of learning.
Year 7 NAPLAN Congratulations to the Year 7 boys who took part in NAPLAN this week. We were one of 50 schools across Victoria to trial the online version. All boys are to be commended on the way they took part, and it will be great to return to a regular academic timetable next week.
Swimming Congratulations to Will Watson (Year 6) and Ryder Cheesman (Year 7) who were selected for the Victorian Swim Team. This is a huge achievement for the boys who have been working tirelessly to get to this point. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

It was a delight to see so many mums and sons enjoying the fun and friendship of our special Mother’s Day event. The Camberwell Room, although a snug fit at times, looked a picture with a scattering of large tables draped in white tablecloths, decorated with bouquets of pink roses. At around 7.00am mums and sons began arriving and before too long there was a buzz of conversation and activity. What a great way to start the day and a fine way to remind mums just how special and important they are to us all. The mums were treated to music by the Middle School Stage Band, and at 8.00am all Junior School boys gathered to sing a couple of special songs to their mums. The boys each presented their mum with a masterpiece they had created during their art lessons, which I am sure their mums will enjoy for years to come. Thank you to The Friends of Norge, dads and staff who helped out on the day, and boys who all worked tenaciously to ensure this was a day for mum to remember. Particular thanks must go to Janet Cheung, Debbie Cheong, Karen Mill and their hard working team for giving so generously of their time, energy and creativity. It was a marvellous morning for everyone!

2019 South Yarra District Cross Country Championships On Monday 13 May, our squad of Year 4, 5 and 6 boys travelled to Fawkner Park to compete in the annual South Yarra District Schools Cross Country Championships. All 10 year-old boys ran a distance of 2 kilometres, whilst all 11 and 12 year-old runners competed over 3 kilometres. Camberwell Grammar School competed very well across all age groups, with every boy trying their hardest in what was, for some, their first time in competition. Special recognition goes to Edward Oliver (Year 6) who finished 5th in the 12/13 aged event. Edward now qualifies for the Divisional Cross Country Championships, being held on Tuesday 28 May at Bald Hill Park, Oakleigh. The following boys should also be congratulated on their efforts, placing in the top 20 for their age group: 12/12 Years (Year 6)

Another weekend of Sport is upon us, with the round getting underway with Firsts Football, Hockey and Soccer on Friday afternoon. Football is at Gordon Barnard Oval at 2.30pm, Hockey is at Elgar Park at 4.00pm, while Soccer is being played at school on the Keith Anderson Oval at 3.15pm. It would be great to have plenty of support at the matches! We are also hosting the AGSV Cross Country on Saturday morning at Yarra Bend Park. The AGSV finished second in the Boys division at Swimming Victoria’s Victorian School Associations Competition on Monday. Our swimmers, all Year 9 and racing in the 12-14 age group, performed very well on the night. Their results were as follows: • Yanning Zhang: 1st in 50m Freestyle, 1st in 50m Backstroke, 1st 50m Butterfly, 2nd in 100m Freestyle, and 1st 4x50m Backstroke relay. • Gregory Kerdemelidis: 1st 50m Breaststroke, 1st 4x50m Medley relay and 2nd 4x50m Breaststroke relay. • Lewis Clarke: 1st 4x50m Medley relay, 2nd 4x50m Breaststroke relay, 2nd 4x50m Butterfly relay. • Cody Greenwood: 2nd 4x50m Butterfly relay and 2nd 4x50m Freestyle relay. Sport Uniform Some students are still wearing the old Sport uniform, which should no longer be used. Furthermore, students should not be wearing non-CGS attire on the way to or at matches. Please refer to the Uniform Booklet on the Parent Portal to ensure your son is wearing the appropriate uniform. The Parent Portal also contains weekly fixtures and transport information. Sport Report The First XVIII Football team looked to bounce back from a disappointing Round 2 loss as they made the long journey to Assumption on the weekend. Kicking with the wind in the first quarter, Camberwell got on top early as the team piled on 3 early goals to push to a 16 point lead coming into quarter-time. Assumption got on top early in the second quarter as Camberwell overused the ball at critical times, enabling Assumption to easily get out into space and run the ball into their forward 50. A late goal by Ruben Hopkins saw Camberwell come into half-time with a 29 point deficit. The second half started scrappily as neither team could take advantage of their inside 50s; however, Camberwell’s ball movement showed promising signs on the back of great run and carry off half-back by Captain Ryan Walsh. With nothing to lose in the fourth term, Camberwell went to all out attack and were successful as they got the margin under 3 goals. However, injuries to key players allowed Assumption to take control and they kicked seven unanswered goals. The final score line, though not truly reflecting the effort and intensity of the game, saw Assumption win by 65 points. The Intermediate B Football team had the game played on their terms for the entirety of the match as they posted another convincing win over Assumption. On the back of their incredible 179 point win last week, the team came into their match filled with confidence; however, the players knew that they would have to work hard to get the result they were after. Camberwell took control of the game from the start as they kicked eight unanswered goals in the first quarter on the back of great efforts from Jack Spalding and Patrick Blew. From there, Camberwell continued to score freely, with brilliant contributions from Harry McColl and Sam Veitch, who kicked 4 and 3 goals respectively. Camberwell finished the game 96-point victors as they make a push for a possible promotion to the A-competition. The First Badminton team had a tough encounter against Trinity, looking for a win without their full-strength line up. Captain Jason Tran put up a gallant effort as he stepped up to the number one seed position. Despite going down early in the first set, Jason clawed his way back and won a gutsy second and third set to give Camberwell their first rubber. The scores were tied at 2 rubbers each from the singles as Camberwell came into the doubles hoping to secure a lead. William Li and Peter Zhao continued to work hard; however Trinity, were too good in the end, coming away with a very narrow victory. The Cross Country Squad headed out to Jells Park in their third race of the season severely undermanned as several key runners had succumbed to injury. The Under 14 team raced first over a 3 km track in teams of four. Harrison Carr, Jack Dobbyn, Daniel Chen and Ray He provided a highlight of the day as the team crossed the finish line in 5th against some of the best runners in the state. The Under 16 team ran a slightly longer 4 km course with their finish place boosted by an impressive run by Matthew Treagus. Other great contributions from Lachlan Wei, Colby Gale and Thomas Power meant the team ended the day in a very respectable 16th in the largest field for the entire event. The 7A hockey team came into their game against Ivanhoe looking to get their first win on the board after a disappointing loss last week. Hamish Westcott found his new position as goalkeeper to his liking, blocking almost every attempt at goal. This, combined with the impressive attacking play of Edward Hare and Dominic Bozzone saw Camberwell in complete control. The team continued to apply forward pressure and eventually finished the game winning 6 goals to 0. Good luck to all teams in Round 3 of the AGSV season. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games

Music 2019 Mid-Year Concert - Thursday 30 May at 7.30pm Staff and students have been working hard in rehearsals this week in the lead up to the Concert. Boys are encouraged to practise and seek extra copies of sheet music from their teachers in order to perform with confidence on the night. Thank you to everyone who has put their name on the Waiting List for the Mid-Year Concert. We will be releasing more tickets for sale next week to all who have registered. Click here to put your name on the Waiting List if you have not already done so. We will contact the Waiting List members by email. Our aim is to ensure that every boy performing in the Concert is able to have a family member in the audience; however, we are limited by how many people we can fit safely into the building. Year 8 Music Ensemble Elective Performance
Parents Using Schoology
Last night, the Year 8 Music Ensemble Elective groups performed to an appreciative audience of peers, parents, family and friends in the Henley Rehearsal Room. While the performances always showcase musical expression, the highlight of this particular concert is often the teamwork, personal growth and autonomy displayed by the boys. With groups so small in size, the boys are each responsible for holding their own parts without other players playing the same parts as them. As such, they need to listen keenly and contribute reliably at all time; particularly challenging in front of an audience. All groups performed brilliantly across a variety of genres from a Guitar Trio, to a Fiddle Band, a traditional Wind Quintet and a Jazz/Rock Group.

Swinburne University - Discover Design Swinburne is hosting the Discover Design program in the July school holidays for Year 10 to Year 12 students who are curious about the world of design, passionate about learning and interested in a creative future. Through the program students will meet Swinburne staff and learn about design careers, courses and pathways. Participants will develop a design portfolio, broaden their problem-solving and design-thinking skills and work in teams — just like a real design studio! The three day event costs $180 (inclusive of lunch and all materials) and will take place from 9 to 12 July 2019 at the Hawthorn campus. There is also the option of a ½ day for $60. Register here.
Bachelor of Engineering Practice (Honours) Swinburne introduced the Bachelor of Engineering Practice (Honours) degree in 2018. This course offers an alternative to the traditional teaching and assessment approaches in engineering. For four years, students undertake real-world projects in teams, working as Associates with the Swinburne Engineering Practice Academy which is an on-campus engineering consultancy. It has been co-designed with industry partners to ensure that future graduates are well-prepared for work. Entry to the degree is based on a written submission and an interview and assessment is based on individual performance in each project, rather than exams. The degree runs alongside the existing Bachelor of Engineering (Honours). Prerequisites are a minimum of 25 in any English (EAL requires 30) and 20 in any Mathematics. CGS Auxiliary Christmas Pudding Preparation Has Begun! Winter means pudding time and there are lots of opportunities for parents and friends to be part of this fantastic tradition which raises funds for the school and spreads a bit of cheer through our community every Christmas. This term we have three more days preparation. Cafeteria Roster The Auxiliary is seeking assistance from parents who are available to volunteer one or two mornings per Term, to assist staff in the Cafeteria. We ideally would like to have two parent volunteers per day. The hours are 9.30am to 1.00pm. It is a fun way to meet other parents and feel connected to the Camberwell Grammar School community.
