Edition 52, 31 May 2019

Tuesday 11 June will be a Junior School Student Free Day; this day is set aside for Junior School planning day. Monday 24 June is a Student Free Day for Middle and Senior School, with teachers involved in examination marking and report writing.

Mid-Year Concert I want to thank the many families who supported our musicians last night, when nearly 400 of our students gathered in the Performing Arts Centre to present the Mid-Year School Concert. The program was, as always, both demanding and varied. It was wonderful to see so many students participating in such highquality music making and to see the progression from our junior ensembles to our more experienced senior groups (the audience also thoroughly enjoyed the ‘interlude’ items). I must make mention of Captain of Music, Sebastian Csutoros’ (Year 12) extraordinary Cello Concerto, which was accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra, and Ben Finney (Year 12) and Hugh McGlone (Year 11), who performed wonderful solo parts in the School Choir’s The Holy City. I am grateful to our Director of Music, Mr Ben Bishop and our talented music staff, and especially the conductors of the various ensembles: Mr Byrne, Ms Thomas, Ms Atkinson, Ms Wostry, Mr Kerr, Mr Johnston, Mr Day, Ms Grosman, Ms Aw and Ms Fairs for the extraordinary leadership that they give our music program. We now look forward to the September Concert, wondering how our boys could possibly top the achievements of this week! I would also like to thank the Friends of Music who served refreshments at the Concert.

Year 11 Examinations Parents are reminded that the Year 11 examination period will be from Monday 3 June through until Friday 14 June 2019. Whilst students are only required to attend school for their particular examinations or trial examinations, when they are at school, full school uniform is to be worn.

General Achievement Test (GAT) All students in Year 12 and those students studying a Unit 3-4 sequence in Year 11, will also be required to sit the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Wednesday 12 June from 10.00am to 1.15pm. This is a three-hour paper which covers student skills in a wide variety of areas. While no specific study can be done to prepare for it, students have been encouraged to practise past papers and to seek advice from their teachers. A solid performance in this test can only help student scores at the end of the year. I wish the boys all the very best for their examinations.

Year 6 Sustainability Week Next week all Year 6 students will be following a special program studying sustainability. They will go on an excursion to Melbourne Zoo for a zoo educator led talk about endangered animals. Teachers will also accompany students around other areas of the zoo researching other sustainable campaigns that the zoo supports. Students will also go on an excursion to the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk near Ferntree Gully. They will have an educational talk from Parks Victoria and learn about the significance of the Kokoda Track. Teachers will then accompany students on the 1000 Steps walk. The issues discussed during these visits will be studied and followed-up in class activities throughout the week. Students will also be making beeswax wrap holders and participating in a range of debates about sustainability such as “You should only fill your car with petrol once a month”.

Year 7 - Civics and Citizenship Week Page 1

Next week all Year 7 students will be participating in Civics and Citizenship Week. They will be involved in a range of activities including discussions, research assignments and excursions around the local community. They will research aspects of political and legal procedures and explore the Melbourne CBD and inner suburbs.

This course aims to draw on and extend our students’ experiences so that they explore and articulate their personal values and those that underpin our society, gain a more detailed understanding of the structure and mechanics of our government and legal systems and the ideas behind them, and become more familiar with the city and more confident participants in the life of the city. Apart from classroom studies focussing on liveability, four excursions are planned for the week. These excursions not only develop in students a sense of citizenship, they also build vital skills and competencies such as collaboration, communication, decisionmaking, planning and co-operation, which will be useful throughout their lives.

Year 8 - Indigenous Studies Week For the duration of next week, all Year 8 students will be participating in the Indigenous Studies program, which includes a broad look at the nature of Indigenous culture and the challenges of an Indigenous society in the modern era. The boys will explore topics such as The Land and the arrival of White Settlers, Art, Food and Shelter, Music, Dance and Ceremonies, Role-models, Languages and “free choice”. The week will include guest speakers, guest artists and musicians, many units of research and will culminate in an excursion for all boys. Ms Sarah Hopkins, Mr Ron Murray, Mr Chris Grummet and Mr Greg Hunter will be our guest presenters and they will also be sharing workshops with the Year 8 students. Sarah lived in Darwin for 9 years (1981-1990) and her music incorporates deep influences from Aboriginal culture. She tours nationally and internationally and has represented Australia at many prestigious events. Ron is an Indigenous cultural awareness facilitator, musician and artist. He is a cultural educator, storyteller, musician, didgeridoo maker and wood sculptor. He has made beautiful art pieces for Muhammad Ali, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Sir Bob Geldof, American composer Philip Glass, athlete Cathy Freeman and the Harlem Dance Company, to name a few. Chris is a former teacher and leader in Indigenous education, who works with schools to develop cultural awareness Indigenous programs. Greg, more commonly known as Murrundindi, is the ‘Ngurungaeta’ of the Wurundjeri people, a descendant of William Barak. He will present to the boys the diversity of his Aboriginal culture through song, dance, language, and music.

The boys maintain a Work Experience diary and reports are also compiled by the visiting staff members. The boys work in a wide variety of settings, and for many this provides a worthwhile opportunity for them to explore career and post-school options. We are very grateful to the many members of the wider school community who have assisted with the placement of our Year 10 students and feel confident that, as in the past, all boys will benefit greatly from the experience, while also promoting the reputation of our School. Many thanks to our Careers Counsellor, Mrs Lynette Reiger and our Student Services Office Co-ordinator, Ms Jan Sangster for assisting with the organisation these work experience placements for our students

Parent Education Seminar Our next Parent Education Seminar for parents only, will be on “It’s Time We Talked: Pornography, Young People and Sexuality Today” and will take place at 7.00pm on Tuesday 4 June 2019 at Camberwell Girls Grammar School. After-School French DELF Preparation Courses Term 3 In Term 3, Camberwell Grammar School will be working with the Alliance Française de Melbourne and Camberwell Girls Grammar School to offer a preparation course for the internationally recognised DELF Junior/Scolaire French examination (Diplôme Elémentaire de Langue Française/Diploma in French language). It is a diploma aimed at secondary school students who learn French as a foreign language, or for French native speakers who live outside France. The DELF diplomas evaluate a student’s ability to communicate, both orally and verbally, with actual Francophones. There are four levels of achievement, from A1, A2 (basic-level users) and B1, B2 (independent users), where the B2 level enables students to access schools and universities in France and Francophone countries. The results are valid for life. For further information about the DELF diplomas, click here. The course will run on Tuesdays (3.45pm to 5.15pm) at Camberwell Grammar School for 10 weeks. Enrolments and payments are to be made directly to the Alliance Française and must be emailed to Margaux Josse HeadTeacher1@afmelbourne.com.au by Monday 3 June 2019. Rob French, Acting Headmaster

Middle School

Well done to all the boys (and parents) who have made it through a very busy Week 5 and 6. Many boys have just completed a string of Summative Assessment Tasks, Unit Tests, and a Mid-Year Concert; not to mention everything else that goes on in a regular school week at Camberwell Grammar School. Next week will be a great opportunity to learn outside of the classroom, during the exciting Week 7 Activities.

Week 7 Activities

The Mid-Year Concert last night was an incredible spectacle. Many hours have gone into creating the wonderful performance that we witnessed last night. As the late Nelson Mandela once said, “there is no passion to be found in playing small”, and playing small they did not. Congratulations to all the boys and staff who were involved.

The Year 8 titles welcomed 31 teams from 30 schools with Camberwell Grammar School doing particularly well in Code Breaking and Engineering. The Year 7 team travelled to Methodist Ladies’ College and came a creditable 4th and qualifying for the National titles at Knox Grammar School, Sydney, during the upcoming term break. Well done to all teams. Paul Double, Head of Learning Enrichment

Round Robin at PEGS Congratulations to our Year 6 boys who competed in their first-round robin at PEGS this afternoon. It was a welcome break, after three weeks of practice on-site. This tournament is an important stage of the transition into Saturday Sport in Year 7.

Week 7 Activities Many thanks to Mr Mark Mews, Mr Scott Wyatt and Mr Shaun Burke who have led their respective Year 6, 7 and 8 teams in planning an exciting schedule of learning opportunities outside of the classroom next week. The boys will explore several historical pockets of Melbourne throughout the week. For safety purposes, boys are encouraged to take their phones on excursions and are reminded to use them for emergencies only. We look forward to a fulfilling week ahead. A more detailed list of events is provided in the Acting Headmaster’s section of this Bulletin. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School Mid-Year Concert Congratulations to all members of the Junior School Orchestra, Junior School Choir and Chamber Singers who performed with great polish, musicianship and energy at last night’s Mid Year Concert. With entertaining music to perform, beautiful singing and tight instrumental focus, our musicians were wonderful ambassadors for Junior School.

Junior School Soiree - Tuesday 4 June at 6.00pm Many young musicians are practising hard to perform instrumental items at next week’s Junior School Soiree. This Concert presents a wonderful opportunity for boys to embrace the challenging task of solo performance. Page 3

Congratulations to Taran Rose (Year 8) who is currently representing Victoria in the Eastern Athletics Baseball Charter at the Australian Baseball Junior League National Championships in Adelaide. Also, Yanning Zhang has been selected to represent Victoria in the inaugural 2019 Tri Meet against Swimming NSW and Swimming Tasmania from Monday 8 to Friday 12 July. Sport Report Matching up against a winless Peninsula side, the First XVIII Football side came into the game with every confidence that they would be able to secure their first win of the season. Camberwell held strong in defence in the first quarter as they kept Peninsula to only two goals while kicking one of their own, despite kicking into the wind. The second quarter saw Camberwell’s midfield hold to their structures, with a great attack at the ball. Great deliveries into Camberwell’s forward 50 saw Liam Thomas (Year 10) take full advantage as he put CGS up at halftime. Peninsula came out into the second half with a new found hunger for the ball and put immense pressure on Camberwell’s back six as they kicked 5 unanswered goals. Coming into three-quartertime, Camberwell’s coaching staff, led by Mr Paul Sartori, changed up the midfield and injected Ryan Walsh (Year 12) into the centre. Straight away, Ryan dominated the centre clearances, kicking the first goal of the fourth quarter and kick-starting Camberwell’s hopes of revival with it. Two more goals from Liam Thomas and Max Inglis (Year 12) saw Camberwell within 4 points with only 5 minutes remaining - victory only one good effort away. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, as Peninsula kicked 2 in a matter of minutes and erased any chance of a come-from-behind victory. After a good win against Ivanhoe, the First XI Hockey team went to Mentone in pursuit of back-to-back victories. After a relatively slow start, Camberwell got off the mark with a solid team goal. Strong efforts from Rian MacLennan (Year 10) put the Mentone backline under immense pressure and tight marking from the midfielders allowed Camberwell to keep the ball in their attacking third. A rotation of players into unfamiliar positions gave James Sampson (Year 12) a licence to attack. He took this with open arms, leading the way with 4 goals in a 7-1 win. Camberwell play PEGS this week in what will be an exciting grand final replay. Page 4

With only 15 on the field to start the game, the Inter C Gold Football team had a rough start to their encounter against Mentone. Mentone kicked five very early goals to put Camberwell on the backfoot early in the game. However, much to the team’s credit the boys fought hard and were rewarded as two superb Charles Robertson (Year 9) goals saw the team start to work their way back into the game. Luke O’Brien (Year 9) was great in the backline all day as he worked hard to get the ball back into Camberwell’s forward half with every opportunity he could. Jacob Chappell (Year 11) was instrumental at his newly-found position at centre-half-forward as he kicked 2 goals to help Camberwell outscore Mentone in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the lack of numbers on the ground caught up with the team in the fourth quarter as Mentone came away 37 point winners. Following an unexpected loss at the hands of Trinity last week, the First Badminton team came into this week’s match against Peninsula looking to redeem themselves. Otto Zhao (Year 10) and Jason Tran (Year 12) led the way with commanding victories in their singles matches, putting Camberwell at a significant advantage coming into the doubles matches. The new doubles combinations paved the way for a comfortable Camberwell victory as the team won 5 rubbers to 1 and now sit a game ahead of third with one round to go. Good luck to all teams in this week’s round of sport. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games

Throughout the year, the Music School runs a series of Music Students’ Recitals. They are aimed at providing valuable performance experience, in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere, for Instrumental students in the Middle and Senior Schools. As of next week, students will be able to register for the Term 2 Recital which is to be held in Week 9 on Thursday 20 June at 7.30pm. To do this, boys who learn their instrument at school will need to speak to their Instrumental Teacher, who can add their name and performance information to the sign-up list. For boys who learn outside of school, this attached form should be completed, signed by their teacher and returned to the Music Office no later than Friday 8 June. Please note, if a member of the Music Staff is requested as an accompanist, the music for that accompaniment must be provided at the time of registration. The aim is for these recitals to run no longer than 90 minutes. Once this time limit has been reached, the recital will be closed until next term. Greg Roberts, Head of Keyboard
