Again, parents and friends are very welcome to join the congregation of staff and boys on this occasion.

AGSV Swimming Finals I look forward to supporting our squad at MSAC this evening as they compete in the AGSV Swimming Finals. Swimming is both an individual and a team sport and our squad have been training hard all this term – many of them have been swimming all year – and it all comes down to their performance this evening. We all wish them all the very best, and will be cheering from the stands to encourage them. All we can ask is that they do their best, and compete hard. It should be an exciting evening!
Senior School House Athletics Competition Thank you to all staff who assisted last Tuesday at the Senior School House Athletics. Special thanks to Mr Rhys Thomas for his organisation of another successful day. The following are the individual results. It was my pleasure at yesterday’s Assembly to present the following students with their medals: Year 9

Congratulations to Summons House. It was my pleasure to present the Captain of Summons House Harley Beechey (Year 12) with the House Athletics Trophy at yesterday’s Assembly.
CGS Table Tennis AGSV 2019 Premiership Victory Congratulations to the Firsts Table Tennis squad for winning the AGSV Premiership earlier this month. In what was a commanding season, the squad finished in style with a 15-0 victory against Trinity. The Captain Nathan Shi (Year 11) led the team well and with a young squad, we look certain for continued success in the sport for years to come. I was pleased to present Nathan with the Trophy at yesterday’s Assembly.
CGS Lawn Bowls AGSV 2019 Premiership Victory In the Lawn Bowls final held over the weekend, Camberwell’s A-Team reclaimed the AGSV Premiership title after three years, defeating Assumption 11 shots to 8. The Co-Captains from Year 10, William Cook and Elijah Pannozzo were presented with the Shield at yesterday’s Assembly.
Red Cross Appeal Thank you to all students, families and the local residents who generously supported the Red Cross Appeal. Through the combined efforts of our Year 11 students, our boys were able to collect nearly $2000 over the weekend 2 and 3 March. A special thank you to the boys for their efforts. Paul Hicks, Headmaster
Middle School House Sport Well done to the boys who took part in Round 2 of the House Sport this afternoon. Many thanks to Mr Charlie Lockwood in his first year of arranging House Sport.
Parent-Teacher Interviews Many thanks to all of the parents and boys who were able to come into the Parent Teacher Interviews on Wednesday. Hopefully the information discussed was of value to both parents and teachers and the boys are able to use the information provided to motivate them to learn. The second round of interviews will take place next Tuesday. It is always quite powerful to include students in these conversations, so any feedback and suggestions would be warmly received.

AGSV Swimming Best of luck to the Swim Team tonight at MSAC. Swimming is a challenging sport that requires discipline from both boys and parents. Early starts and regularly pushing through the pain thresholds are all part of swimming, so it is fortunate that the rewards usually match the effort. One area that often leads to disappointment is when boys train all season, only to miss out on the selection in the final carnival. To those boys, know that you are as much a part of the team as the boys who swim tonight and you ought to be proud of your efforts this season. Best of luck.
Intensive Schoology Workshop Many thanks to Mr Scott Wyatt and the small group of parents who attended the Schoology Workshop on Wednesday night. It was a very helpful exercise on all sides where we explored some of the useful learning tools and the continual reporting feedback process. If you are having issues accessing Schoology, please contact the ICT Department at itadmin@cgs.vic.edu.au.
Student Passwords Students need to update their ICT login passwords on a regular basis. If they have not done so this year, they will need to see the IT Department in the Wheelton Centre ASAP. We are currently looking at options to automate this process.
House Athletics Best of luck to all boys for the House Athletics Carnival on Monday at Bill Sewart Athletics Track, starting at 9.00am. Parents are most welcome to attend and can find the program for timings on here. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School
Junior School At this week’s Assembly all Year 5 boys were presented with their leadership badges reminding them of their position as the senior Junior School class and the associated responsibilities and expectations. During last week’s Assembly, the 16 boys nominated to stand for election to the Year 5 Executive Council presented themselves and their ideas to the boys from Years 3 to 5. Their presentations were superb! The boys had clearly given a great deal of thought to the idea of leadership and how they personally could contribute to enhancing the life of the School and the experience of their school mates. I am sure the parents who were there were very proud of their sons, just as I was. The nominees were: Maxwell Chao-Hong, Maximilian Coia, Angus Egan, Caleb Jack, William Kemp, Edward Liang, Lachlan Lee, Hamish Mitchell, Joseph Ni, Harrison Ross, Harish R-Roshan, Ashton Semczyszyn, Leonidas Tiras, Costas Zakkas, Louis Zhang and Melvin Zhang. From the 16 boys nominated to stand for election to the Year 5 Executive Council, 10 were elected. All nominated boys are congratulated for their nomination and recognition as leaders by their peers. I am pleased to announce the 2019 Executive Council: Maxwell Chao-Hong, Maximilian Coia, Angus Egan, Caleb Jack, William Kemp, Lachlan Lee, Hamish Mitchell, Joseph Ni, Harish R-Roshan and Melvin Zhang. I will be asking our Junior School Leaders to make a difference; to provide guidance encouragement and energy so that our school is a better place because of their leadership and example. I wish them every success and I look forward to working closely with them in the months ahead.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2019 We are once again promoting the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge for our Prep to Year 5 boys. The Premiers’ Reading Challenge encourages children to read a set number of books and record their efforts online. Prep to Grade 2 need to read 30 books and Years 3-5 need to read 15 books. It is a great way to get young people talking about reading with their friends and family to expand their reading scope. Details of the challenge including Book Lists and Rules can be obtained here. If your son is interested in becoming involved, please email Mrs Maryanne Walker in the Junior School Library at mhw@cgs.vic.edu.au by Friday 29 March. Mrs Walker will register your son and then pass on his login details to you. You will then be able to set up his online account to log the books he reads as parents will be required to assist their sons with the online reading record. The challenge will run from Monday 1 April at our School, through to the end of Book Week which finishes Friday 23 August. Mrs Maryanne Walker, Junior School Library
Winter Uniform Winter uniform is to be worn for Terms 2 and 3. Boys can wear summer or winter uniform up until Anzac Day (Thursday 25 April) but from Friday 26 April all Junior School boys must be in full winter uniform.

Best wishes to the Swimming Squad who are competing in the AGSV Swimming Finals tonight! Congratulations to the First Lawn Bowls team, consisting of William Cook, Elijah Pannozzo (Year 10), Kristian Bite and Hieu Tran (Year 9), for winning the AGSV Premiership last week. For students playing Baseball as their Winter Sport, North Balwyn Baseball Club are holding their registration and trials morning on 23 March, Myrtle Park in Balwyn North. Registration is from 9.00am to 10.00am, with trials starting from 10.00am. While it is not a compulsory event, it is strongly encouraged to attend, especially for new students to the sport. Winter Sport team lists and training schedules are now on display at the Sports Office. Thank you to the students who have come forward with any concerns. Teams have been allocated but they are subject to change. A reminder that students wanting to trial for a higher graded team should attend the training session of the higher team at the beginning of next term but ensure they let the staff member in charge of their allocated team know. The Cricket presentation evening was enjoyed by all on Monday. Thank you to Friends of Cricket for their organisation and support. The Tennis presentation evening is on Friday 29 March. Students will have the opportunity to have a hit of tennis before the formal proceedings start. Swimming are having their presentation evening on Wednesday 3 April once all of their races are done. Running sessions with Craig Mottram and his team continue for the remainder of Term 1 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. The sessions start at 6.45am on the KAO and are open to students of all ages and abilities. The focus of the sessions is to improve running technique, endurance and speed. The sessions are a great way to prepare for the Winter Season.
Sport Report The last round of the 2019 AGSV Lawn Bowls season saw the Camberwell Grammar A Team reclaim the title after 3 years, defeating Assumption 11 to 8. The team, comprising of William Cook, Elijah Pannozzo (both Year 10), Kristian Bite and Hieu Tran (both Year 9), got out to a fantastic start, leading Assumption 11 bowls to 2. Much to the enjoyment of the boys and all those who were present, the team were crowned champions for the 2018/19 season. They will now face the APS champions next week. The Orienteering Squad wrapped up their season with their final event in Hawthorn two weeks ago. CGS placed second overall for the season - an impressive effort. Special mention goes to Matthew Rodier (Year 10), who came first across all schools in the closely run D-grade competition. Captain James Gunasegaram (Year 12) also led the team with outstanding performances all year. The Squash Squad had a tough encounter against Mulgrave as they looked to continue their successful season. The Firsts team made light work of their opponents thanks to great contributions from Nick Gooden, Daniel Spencer and Paco Tse (all Year 12). The boys were in command for the whole game, with the score finishing 5 rubbers, 225 points to Mulgrave’s 0 rubbers 145 points. The Thirds team had a more competitive match with James Thorn (Year 11) and Hamish Campbell-Cowan (Year 9) giving their best efforts to ensure a win. With the match close for its entirety, Camberwell were able to come out as victors against a very persistent Mulgrave side with the score ending Camberwell 3 rubbers, 189 points to 2 rubbers, 168 points. Camberwell Grammar’s Kayaking team had a successful day at the Victorian School’s Sprint and Marathon Championships, fielding the biggest team amongst all of the schools. Henry Baker and Rafael Carmel (both Year 8) both paddled extremely well to come away with the silver medal in the U/14 marathon race. In the U/16 K2 event, the team of Maxwell Boyle and Campbell Rowland (both Year 9) also finished second whilst Eric Tang and Leo Yang (both Year 10) placed third. In the sprints, there were a number of great performances from both the experienced Senior School paddlers and the newer U/14 and U/16 students. In their first school kayaking event, Joel Cooray and David Thomas (both Year 9) emerged as gold medallists for their respective events illustrating the bright future ahead for Camberwell Grammar Kayaking. The Triathlon squad competed in the fifth race in the series at Portarlington, which also served as the Victorian Sprint Distance Championship. The sun was shining, the water was flat, and the wind was light conditions could not have been better for a triathlon! In the Fun Tri-race of 300 metre swim, 10 km bike and 3 km run, Jack Dobbyn (Year 8), competing in the 13/14 age category, maintained his excellent form placing 13th, followed by Tim Howard (Year 8), who continues to improve in every race. In the 14/15 category, Billy Swingler (Year 9), strong in all three ‘legs’, secured 8th place, while in the 16-19 category, Ryan Fitzgerald (Year 12) squeezed into a top ten finish after a good ride and swim. The Sprint Distance Championship is a challenging 800 metre swim, 26 km bike and 8 km run on a gravelly track. Racing in the Junior Elite category, Jack Amling (Year 12) secured 4th place after an impressive swim and blistering bike. In the 15-19 category, there were two excellent performances: Captain Harry Swingler (Year 12), having secured the fourth fastest swim time, secured 9th place, soon to be followed by Charlie Harper (Year 12) who, after a stunning run, secured 16th place.

In Cycling, the squad headed to Casey Fields for individual criterium and team racing. In the Senior Male A team race, James Stambe, Jonathan Seeley and Captain Zac Kelly (all Year 10) finished 6th of 24 teams, averaging 39.5 km/hr over the 15 km race. There was a nail biting finish at the end of the Senior Male A criterium - four cyclists rounded the last bend - Trinity, Caulfield, St Kevin’s and Camberwell. With an almighty push in the last 10 metres, Zac Kelly led over the line with half a bike length clear of the other three to claim top tier. In the Senior Male B race, James Stambe stood on the podium with a bronze medal. A fantastic result given he was collected in a last lap collapse of the peloton. Pushed off the track, onto the grass and off his bike, James quickly rose to his feet, mounted the bike and raced after the leaders to claim third just behind them. The Junior Male A team of Ned Chesler (Year 8), Jason Li (Year 7), Timothy Yeow (Year 7) and Marcus Liew (Year 8) finished 10th of 18 teams – averaging 32 km/hr over their 11 km race. In the Junior Male B criterium, there was a “John Landy moment” - almost. Elliot Fry (Year 8) tore around the circuit only to be caught up in a race crash. Marcus Liew (Year 8) – in front of the mayhem - pulled over, doubled back and dismounted, checked on his teammate - before racing off to catch up with the leaders. Commentators and crowd were very impressed with Marcus’ concern and selfless action. In the Junior Male C, up and coming Year 7 student Timothy Yeow claimed 5th place, less than a second in front of Ned Chesler (7th). Timothy has been racing in midweek school cycling events at the Kew Teardrop, claiming a podium finish most weeks. This Friday, the Camberwell Grammar swimming squad will be heading to MSAC to compete in the annual AGSV swimming finals. Good luck to all boys competing and a big thank you to all those who are going to support our team. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games
