From the Acting Headmaster

I wish everyone all the very best for the coming holiday and I hope that the break from school routines provides an opportunity for batteries to be re-charged in readiness for the fresh challenges of Term 3. It has been a very busy time at CGS in recent weeks and many of the boys have been involved in a wide range of activities. I took the opportunity at yesterday’s Assembly to congratulate the senior boys on the manner with which they have tackled Term 2, and I echo those sentiments for our Junior and Middle School students. Their enthusiasm and support for each other is incredible and their positive approach ensures that CGS is a wonderful community and a great place to be every day. Classes begin again for Term 3 on Tuesday 16 July. The Monday preceding will be used for a range of professional development activities, involving all members of the teaching staff. The School offices will be open as usual throughout the vacation.

Junior School Production Last night I had the pleasure of seeing The Amazing Adventures of Superstan, our Junior School production. It was a brilliant night at the theatre and I congratulate the young cast on a most enjoyable and entertaining show. I have never heard so many ‘Dad’ jokes in my life! Well done to the Junior School staff and particularly Ms Trista Fry (Director), Mr Matthew McRae (Assistant Director) Ms Helen Thomas (Musical Director), Ms Michelle Ponert (Drama Trainer), Ms Jennifer Bennie (Costume Design) and the production team for a wonderful show.

Holiday Activities It is always pleasing to note the range of activities that our students are involved in over every vacation period. It is particularly important to note that these activities can only take place because of the enthusiastic and committed effort of staff members. A group of Year 8 and 9 students will make their way across the globe as part of the UK Cricket Tour for 2019. Ably led by Mr Lachlan Crawford, Mr Troy Stanley and Mr Jamie Watson, the group will play 8 matches across England, culminating in a tournament in Southampton, staying at the prestigious Southampton University. Tour highlights will include a tour of London, Lords Cricket Ground, Stonehenge, Oxford University and Old Trafford Football Stadium. I wish all involved well for what should be a brilliant experience. We also have two teams travelling to Sydney to compete in the National Championships of the da Vinci Decathlon. Best of luck to Mr Paul Double and our Year 7 and 10 boys who will be representing us in this competition: Year 10

The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition is a problem-solving competition designed to encourage student curiosity and promote multiple modes of thinking. During the competition, students developed informal algorithms and thought logically about various scenarios to arrive at solutions to the problems.

Of these, 16 students were awarded High Distinction certificates and 68 students received a Distinction certificate, which will be distributed to participants in their Mathematics classes. Bond University Mooting Competition The Secondary School mooting competition run by Bond University is a competition based on a courtroom appearance defending or prosecuting a case before a judge. Hundreds of teams across Australia competed in the Regional Finals with three teams from Victoria being invited to Bond University on the Gold Coast for the National Competition. Camberwellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team consisting of Year 12 students Nicholas Gooden (Junior Counsel), Alan Jiang (Senior Counsel) and Jai Singh (Solicitor) competed well in the final against a team from Sydney. Although not successful as the winning National team, our team received high praise from the judges for their forthright arguments.

Sport Achievements Jasper Guthrie (Year 12) received a bronze medal for placing 3rd at the AGSV / APS / BAS Golf Championships played at Spring Valley Golf Club. Michael Hare (Year 9) scored an impressive five goals for the First Hockey team against PEGS in round 5 of the AGSV competition.

Balwyn Rotary Club Public Speaking Competition Philip ALEX (Year 11) won the Balwyn Rotary Speech Contest with his speech “The Art of Conversation Is Dying”. Philip won a $300 Dymocks book voucher and $3,000 to go to a nominated charity. Philip elected to donate to the Camberwell Grammar School’s Rotary Interact Club to assist in the Club’s international and local charitable endeavours.

Many thanks to everyone for your efforts this Term. From school drop-offs, to assistance with homework, Saturday sports analysis on the car ride home, to encouragement to persist when students felt like giving up. Teachers, siblings, parents and so many more contribute to our boy’s lives at the School. On occasion, your efforts might be overlooked but they are never under-appreciated and will never be forgotten.

End of Term Church Service Strong culture is built through traditions. Two of our traditions are the End of Term Chapel and Assembly Services. Rev. Butler conducted the End of Term Chapel Service in our stunning All Souls Chapel on Tuesday. He invited Year 12 Prefect, Ian Kaharudin, to share advice from his journey through Middle School and he also conveyed deep-seated spiritual beliefs. Lessons from those who have faced the same challenges is always very compelling. Several Middle School boys also took part throughout the thought-provoking service.

Vocal Soiree Congratulations to the boys who performed in the Middle School Vocal Soiree on Tuesday night. It was a great night of music.

House Swimming Earlier this afternoon the new Sports Complex was abuzz with excitement as the Middle School House Swimming carnival began. We have some serious swimming talent at this School and regardless of individual ability, it was great to see the boys striving for their Houses. Many thanks to Mr Lockwood and his loyal troop of helpers who provided this opportunity for the boys to compete in Olympic-standard facilities.

Holidays and Tours Over the holidays we wish everyone a relaxing break. For those who are so accustomed to working hard, it is sometimes harder to switch off and unwind. Nevertheless, it is a critical element of longevity and happiness, so enjoy time these holidays with your boys. We especially wish safe travels to the boys and staff heading off to the da Vinci Decathlon Competition in Sydney (go the Swannies!) and UK Cricket Tour. We hope that the tours continue to suitably stretch the boy’s limits and open their eyes to an even greater potential in themselves and each other.

Friday Activities in Term 3 Boys will finish School on Fridays from 2.45pm to 4.30pm, depending on whether they are on-site or not. Mr Christopher has sent around a basic outline and selection instructions for the Activities Program earlier today. Junior School End of Term Wrap Another interesting and rewarding Term has come to an end. The boys can take pride in the way they have engaged so positively in the School program. They have been busy with their learning adventures in and out of the classroom enjoying excursions, incursions, a Soiree, Mid-Year Concert, NAPLAN testing, cross country events, Round Robin sports competitions, writers’ competitions, Mother’s Day breakfast, and finished the Term with ‘Junior School Footy Day’. What a Term indeed, and the Year 3 to Year 5 production of The Amazing Adventures of Superstan was a marvellous way to conclude a very positive and productive Term. The musical production achieved so much of what we believe about boys learning to work together to achieve a quality result, while at the same time providing opportunities for leadership for boys who love their chance to be in the spotlight. All boys responded to the challenges of theatre and stagecraft magnificently; they worked hard on their roles ably supported by the music and class teachers to achieve a very amusing and entertaining show over all three performances. Congratulations boys on a job well done! Sincere thanks to parents for the great support you have given to the many aspects of School life throughout this Term. With the end of Term comes the mailing of School reports, these can be accessed from the Parent Portal early next week. Teachers will be available to discuss and clarify reports during Parent/Teacher conferences in Week 2 of next Term. Parent/Teacher bookings open online on Tuesday 16 July, from 2.00pm. Good luck to the Baseball players who continue their season over the holiday break. To everyone else, remember to keep active. There are opportunities to do so at School, with running sessions being held on the KAO on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.00am to 11.00am. The David Dyer Fitness Centre will be open on those days from 10.00am to 12 noon. It will also be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12.30pm to 2:30pm. A notable achievement occurred last weekend in the Under 15 Blue Baseball team’s match against a much stronger opposition. Sports Report With no AGSV sport last week, it gives us an important opportunity to acknowledge some of the sports that have not received as much attention this Term. With a tough game against the top team of their division in Essendon, the Camberwell U15 Gold baseball team looked to defy the odds to continue their rise up the ladder. Essendon got out to a promising early start as they comfortably took the lead of 4-1 by the end of the first innings. Despite this, pitchers Nick Graves and Thomas Wong (both Year 8) continued to keep Camberwell in the game, upholding their impressive strike rate while Charles Mills (Year 8), who has recently been selected to represent CGS in the upcoming State Championships, continued his impressive form of late, with great hitting all game. Unfortunately Camberwell were unable to come away with a win as they were defeated 9-3. Last Sunday saw the CGS Fencing squad compete in their third round of competition. Julian Lim (Year 7) achieved outstanding success in the Junior epee competition as he finished in second place out of 105 competitors from Trinity, Scotch, John Monash and Melbourne High. In the Senior competition Anderson Sulewski and Henry Smith (both Year 11) both put in valiant efforts as they finished seventh and sixteenth respectively. Congratulations to all those who swam in Tuesday’s House Swimming event, it was great to see everyone giving it all they could for their respective Houses while also recording some great times. In particular, there were a total of 19 school records broken just this year alone. Good luck to all those playing Sport over the Term holidays, especially those representing the School in tours and competitions. Year 8 and 9 cricketers take off this Friday for a two-week trip around the UK visiting cities such as London, Manchester, Hampshire and Liverpool, while the Snowsports team head up to Falls Creek for their first official training and racing of the season in the lead up to the Interschools Competition later in Term 3. Semester 2 has started strongly in the Music Department with Music Academy Masterclasses, the Vocal Soiree and our first classes with Year 7 band 2019. The Music staff and I are eagerly awaiting our classes with these boys next term to begin building our program for December. The future of our School musicals also feels exciting seeing the talent and enthusiasm on display this week in the Junior School’s vibrant production of The Amazing Adventures of Superstan. I would like to remind all boys and families that music rehearsals begin on Monday 15 July next Term, and that music rehearsals must have a place of priority over other commitments – it is simply not possible to rehearse works of the scale and complexity that we do at CGS without everyone present at every rehearsal. Of particular note are the Senior Orchestra and Highton Strings Workshop on Monday 15 July and Senior Choir at lunchtime of Tuesday 16 July. Music Academy Events This week the School community was blessed with visits from some of Australia’s finest musicians. On Tuesday the Australian String Quartet performed a program of Beethoven, Sculthorpe and Brahms.This was followed by an enthralling Question and Answer session and a Masterclass with two CGS Quartets. On Wednesday, esteemed pianist and pedagogue Daniel de Borah (Lecturer of Piano and Chamber Music at Griffith University) gave a fascinating Masterclass. Four CGS students offered works by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel and Schumann. Mr de Borah spoke at length about the importance of structure in an interpretation, the use of pedal, adhering to dynamics and practice methods. On Thursday, the principal flautist of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Prue Davis, offered her wisdom to four CGS students who played works by Burton, Harty, Mozart and Poulenc. Morrisby – Online Career Profiling

Balwyn Rotary Club Public Speaking Competition

Senior students are invited to undertake the on-line career profiling test Morrisby Online to help them identify potential career paths and make informed decisions about study options. Participating students will take a 105 minute online assessment, which measures a variety of elements including aptitudes, career interests, work attitudes, talents and motivations. Once the assessment is complete, students will have access to personally tailored career and education suggestions. We are planning on running this session on Thursday 8 August at 3.35pm. The cost of the test is $50.00 per student. If you would like your son to take part, please register here. All payments must be received by 7 August 2019. Monash - MADA Workshops MADA Workshops are designed to introduce Year 11 and 12 students to creative disciplines and help them prepare their folio for university entry. Folio building workshops are available in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Fine Art and Interior Architecture. The MADA workshops run from 2-4 July and 1-3 October 2019 with prices ranging from $310 to $330. All materials and lunch are supplied. More details here.

Monash - Chemistry Revision Practicals As part of their Year 12 Chemistry Revision Lecture and workshop series, Monash University’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences invites Year 12 Chemistry students to their Parkville campus to participate in a hands-on HPLC workshop. The session allows students to operate analytical instruments, design their own investigation and revise key Unit 4 concepts. This event is part of our Year 12 Chemistry revision lecture and workshop series. There are 2 sessions available (maximum 25 students per session) on Monday 1 July at a cost of $10 per student. Registrations are currently open.

Stoichiometry Revision Day This challenging day of Stoichiometry is for Year 12 students to push themselves in preparation for their end of year exams. It is a perfect revision lecture for the student who wants to be prepared for problem solving questions that involve Stoichiometry. This day includes a revision lecture, morning tea and exam style question workshops, and will take place on Wednesday 3 July, 2019 from 10am-2pm at a cost of $10 per student. Fashion Illustration at Box Hill Institute Experience life as a fashion illustrator at Box Hill Institute in their new Design Hub. The workshop will be led by Tracy Hogan, an experienced Fashion Illustrator, and is for Year 10-12 students interested in communicating their design concepts through illustration and developing their fashion portfolios. PA Winter Ball Last Saturday night 230 parents glammed up and came along to our inaugural Winter Ball at Fenix Function Centre in Richmond. Winter means pudding time and there are lots of opportunities for parents and friends to be part of this fantastic tradition which raises funds for the School and spreads a bit of cheer through our community every Christmas. This Term we have three more days preparation.
