From the Headmaster
Holiday Activities
After a very busy and productive Term, I would like to wish all of our School families a relaxing break during the next two weeks. Classes will begin again in Term 2 on Tuesday 23 April, immediately following Easter Monday. Please note also that the first week of term will be quite disjointed, as the ANZAC day holiday falls on the first Thursday of Term. The School offices will be open as usual throughout the vacation period, except for the Easter Holidays. I now leave for Sabbatical Leave, but look forward to seeing everybody again on my return at the start of Term 3, 2019. Thanks to all of you who have wished me well for this time. During my absence, our Deputy Head, Mr Rob French, will be Acting Headmaster. Parents at all levels of the School should not hesitate to make contact with him if they have any matters they would normally wish to raise with me.

During the first week of Term 2, on Wednesday 24 April, we will be holding a special ANZAC Day Assembly, when we will take time to reflect and honour the sacrifice of those who fought in the First World War. We will be particularly remembering those past students of our school who lost their lives while serving our Country. Our ANZAC Dawn Service will be held on Thursday 25 April at 6.00am in the Wheelton Amphitheatre, followed by a breakfast provided by the Friends of Cadets. Family groups and all friends of the school are warmly invited to attend this service and are requested to gather in the Amphitheater at 5.45am. The underground carpark (enter from Gate 3), will open at 5.30am. Should you wish to stay for the breakfast, please register online by 23 April, using the following Trybooking link: https://www.trybooking.com/BBVRE. The cost of the breakfast will be $5.00. There is no charge for members of the Cadet Unit and students assisting with the service.
Year 9-10 Production - Twelve Angry Men Congratulations to Ms Penny Wood and the cast and crew of the very fine production of Twelve Angry Men which was presented last evening. The production standard was very high indeed, and the ensemble cast worked beautifully together with precision timing to present this play, set in New York in 1957, which explores the themes of prejudice and injustice in ways which remain very relevant today. The students had only this term to prepare, and the final result was most impressive. Well done to all.
School Production - Hamlet Our Head of Drama, Mr Andrew Stocker, together with a very eager team of our students and girls from Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College, have been working hard to prepare this year’s production Hamlet. The production will be presented on Thursday 9, Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May. There is a flyer attached to this Bulletin, which explains how to reserve tickets – please support our students and the team by attending this classic work.
School Uniform Please note that all students should wear full Winter School uniform from the beginning of Term 2. In particular, boys in Middle and Senior Schools are required to wear their school blazers at all times when in public and on formal School occasions. At no time may the school pullover be worn as the outermost garment on the way to and from school, or at Assembly, or other formal functions. All Middle and Senior School students are required to wear long grey trousers, with the regulation School belt or plain black belt, black or grey socks, long-sleeved blue (Middle School) or white (Senior School) shirt with School tie, blazer and black leather lace-up school shoes. High standards of dress and appearance are part of our overall commitment to excellence in everything we do, and I do thank all parents for the strong support they give to the school in ensuring that our student’s appearance is neat, tidy and appropriate at all times.
Holiday Activities Page 1
During the Term vacation our Head of Chinese, Mr Wei Ha will be leading three other staff members and 27 students to China between 6 and 18 April. I thank the members of staff in advance who will be giving up their own time to be with our students.

Middle School Holidays Congratulations to all parents, staff and boys on a fantastic term, it has been a wonderful team effort. Over the course of the term we have all achieved a great deal. A special mention to the new boys and staff who have taken a lot on. We wish all families a wonderful rest and well-earned break over the holiday period.
Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition (CAT) On Tuesday, all Middle School students participated in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition. This is the third year that CGS has participated in this competition that tests students’ ability to follow rules, use logic and to identify and apply algorithms, all of which can help identify computer programming potential. Results will be announced later next term. Mark Mews, Mathematics Subject Co-Ordinator, Middle School
Lenten Church Service On Wednesday the Middle School and a small contingent of parents took part in an early Easter Service at St Mark’s Church. The string quartet, choir and thought-provoking sermon from Reverend Butler was a timely reminder for us all to stop and reflect on how fortunate we all are.
Term 2 A reminder that boys are expected to wear Winter Uniform in Terms 2 and 3. Blazers are expected to be worn whilst travelling to and from School and during Assembly and Chapel Services.
Save the Date Thursday 16 May from 6.30pm is our annual William Angliss Dinner; a Dinner especially for Middle School Parents in 2019. The evening will feature Steven Dupon from the ‘Institute of Games’. Steven talks about the considerations of gaming in our modern world. More information will be circulated closer to the time. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School Wishing Families a Joyful and Safe Holiday As we prepare to break for the Easter Holiday, I would like to extend my very best wishes to all for a joyful and safe holiday. Together we have enjoyed a marvellous first term. The tone of the school has been positive, cheerful and purposeful. I am delighted with the way the boys are going about their lessons and activities, and I am extremely grateful to the parents for their continued support and encouragement at home and at school. As you think about the time you will have with your son over the break, I cannot overstate the importance of engaging your children in conversation. Through conversation children learn how to think, how to reflect, and how to express themselves. Skills that are so necessary to function in the world. Participating in conversation develops a child’s ability to communicate and interact with a variety people in different social situations. It encourages one to listen and to appreciate different viewpoints as well as providing a wonderful avenue for children to see successful problem solving being modelled in the home. Entering into conversation with your child also provides you as parents an opportunity to express your values and for your children to internalise those values. With today’s busy and hectic schedules it is imperative that we make time and provide opportunities to converse with our children on a regular basis. The daily car ride to and from school without the distraction of the ipad or technology, or a sit down meal without phones or TV’s in the background are some ideas. You’ll be surprised at the long term benefits and how much you will learn from each other. Next term Preps will continue to play outside in the mornings before the bell rings to start the school day. They have been doing this very well for several weeks, arriving and performing the morning routine tasks and then joining older boys in the playground. The Prep playground is not used before school as there is not teacher supervision in this area. Parents are encouraged to support the development of independence and self-reliance in their son by encouraging him to walk down to the Prep classroom and set up for the day by himself.
Regional Swimming Thursday 28 March saw five Year 5/6 students compete at the Southern Metropolitan Regional Swimming Championships. We had two individual swimmers and two relay teams competing. The first event of the day for Camberwell was the 12/13 Years 4x50m Freestyle Relay comprising of students from Year 6 Nicholas Wang, Arya Noor, Ross Sykiotis and William Watson. Nicholas led off the relay and took control from the word go in a huge personal best of 31.88. All the boys stepped up and produced swims right on their personal bests in a dominant 11 second victory in a time of 2.10.37 Next in action was our Individual swimmers Melvin Zhang (Year 5) and William Watson (Year 6). Melvin led from start to finish to take out the Boys 9/10 Year old Butterfly by over 3 seconds in a blistering PB of 39.18 creating a new school record (Old Record 39.40 seconds). William was up next and despite swimming a new personal best time of 34.54 seconds encountered some tough competitors finishing in 3rd place. Only minutes later William was back in action with the rest of the Awesome Foursome in the 12/13 Years 4x50 Medley Relay. Ross Sykiotis took the lead in the Backstroke leg before handing over to Arya Noor in the Breaststroke. Arya swam a huge personal best to hold off some fast competitors before William Watson and Nicholas Wang finished the race strongly. The boys once again finished over 11 seconds clear of the next best team and in the process set a new school record with a time of 2.34.15. (old record 2.39.75). All the boys will now contest the School State Swimming Championships on the 24 April.
AGSV Junior Schools Swimming Championships On Monday 1 April, twenty four Junior and Middle School boys competed in the 2019 AGSV Swimming Championship held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). The team performed strongly on the day with a total of twenty three top three finishes out of thirty six boy’s events on the day. Junior School Music Beautiful singing, thoughtful reflection and a focus on kindness towards others – these were the features of the Junior School Easter Service at St Mark’s today, bringing the term to a close. Dressed in their red and white robes, the Junior School Choir and Chamber Singers ably led the singing. The Year 2/3 Superstars sang This Little light of Mine and the Year 5 readers clearly presented the story of Easter. The serenity and beauty of St Mark’s enhanced our singing in this uplifting service of praise.
The Amazing Adventures of Superstan Great excitement was the mood when the lead cast of the Junior School Musical production was announced. Having successfully auditioned for their roles, these boys will rehearse after school each Tuesday next term in preparation for the end of term production. All students in Years 3, 4 and 5 will form the chorus of this entertaining musical. Make sure you mark the last week of Term 2 in your diary now. The Summer Sport season is officially over after Cycling, Kayaking and Triathlon’s final events last weekend. Congratulations to Zac Kelly (Year 10) for winning the Senior Male A division in the Victorian Interschool Cycling Series. The Triathlon team of Jack Amling, Charlie Harper and Harry Swingler (all Year 12), competing in their final triathlon for the School, won their race at St Kilda last weekend. Following on from their performances at the AGSV Swimming Finals, Lewis Clarke, Gregory Kerdemelidis, Cody Greenwood and Yanning Zhang (all Year 9) have been selected to represent the AGSV at the Victorian School Associations Competition, which will be held in May. During the week, Matt McKenna and Sebastian Beck competed at the 2019 Australian Athletics Championships held in Sydney. Matt ran a personal best in the Under 20 400m, while Sebastian competed in the Under 15 100m and 200m. While neither of them made the finals for their races, it was a tremendous achievement to participate in the event, particularly Sebastian who has been battling injury of late. Baseball players should note that their season begins on Saturday 27 April. School training will not occur before then, due to the holidays, so students are encouraged to attend North Balwyn Baseball Club training sessions. They are being held on Tuesday evenings from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Remember to join NBBC on TeamApp for more information. Cross Country are training over the holidays with sessions run by Craig Mottram and his team. However, they are open to all students and will occur between 10am to 12 noon on Monday (8 and 15), Wednesday (10 and 17) and Friday 12 April. Colours for Firsts teams are now being advertised at the Sports Office. Students will have until Wednesday 24 April to make any challenges. The Winter Training Schedule has been posted on notice boards around the School and on TeamApp. Students should be fully aware about their training commitments. Training starts from Wednesday 24 April; however, students should liaise with the staff member in charge of the team/squad. This applies particularly to Firsts teams and Cross Country, who have training and practice matches over the holidays. Good luck to Firsts teams in their scheduled practice matches. Hockey are playing in the annual Melbourne Grammar Tournament, Football have matches against Yarra Valley Grammar and Newington College (NSW), while Soccer will play against Brighton Grammar and Scotch College.

SPORT REPORT The Triathlon squad had their final race for the season on the weekend on a cold and windy St Kilda morning. In the ‘Mini’ race, comprising of a 300m swim, 13km bike and a 3km run, Camberwell had six Year 8 students competing in the 12-13 age group. Lachlan O’Neill in his first triathlon finished in an outstanding 10th place. Jack Dobbyn and Freddie Askew also registered top 20 placings in a field of over 70 competitors. Billy Swingler (Year 9) continued his fine form, finishing in 15th place in the 14-15 age group and in his final ever race for CGS, Ryan Fitzgerald (Year 12) saved his best for last, finishing an impressive 5th place in the 16-19 age group. In their final race for CGS, Harry Swingler, Jack Amling and Charlie Harper (all Year 12) competed in the teams event where each competitor competes in a separate leg of the race. Harry led out on the swim and placed the team in the top 3. A quick transition saw Jack Amling power onto the cycle leg, giving Camberwell a strong lead. Charlie Harper ran a quick 5km to lead the team home in first place ahead of 26 other teams, a great way to end their season and a sweet reward for their dedicated efforts throughout the year. On Monday, four students from Camberwell’s Golf squad travelled to Spring Valley Golf Club to compete in the annual AGSV, APS and Ballarat Schools golf competition. In near perfect conditions for golf, the team managed to come up with some great scores amongst a field of top-quality golfers. The team performed very well, combining to finish fifth overall, thanks to a fantastic round of 89 from Callum Yates (Year 7), a great score of 86 from Peter Lathouras (Year 12) and a superb 3 over par 74 from captain Jasper Guthrie (Year 12), who placed third in the individual competition. The Camberwell cycling squad had their final race on Saturday as CGS Captain Zac Kelly (Year 10) went in as series leader in the hotly contested Senior Male A race, knowing he would have to place in the top six to take the overall series win. Zac put on a blistering early attack, leaving the pack and the riding marshals far behind in his wake. With every lap, Zac built his lead and before long, lapped most of those on the course. Though the series win was seemingly in the bag, Zac was determined to win this last race. Taking the hairpin corners at maximum speed, Zac often ran dangerously close to kerb, a credit to his determination. In his last lap, his lead was unsurmountable as he crossed the finish line with a race and series win. Special mentions also go to Timothy Yeow (Year 7), Logan Taplin (Year 9) and James Stambe (Year 10) who all had podium finishes and finished their season on a high. Last Tuesday, Camberwell were fortunate enough to host the annual AGSV versus APS representative competition. In what was a fantastic day, CGS were proudly represented by Vihaan Narayana (Year 12) in Cricket and Nathan Shi (Year 11), Ethan Tang (Year 11), Daniel Ho (Year 10) and Bryden Tan (Year 11) in Table Tennis. Congratulations to all boys on their selection and particular mentions to the Vihaan and the AGSV cricket side who beat the APS for the first time in 6 years. The first Friday of Term 2 will see both the Firsts Football and Firsts Soccer team play in the annual Mitre Cup against Trinity. This year there will again be buses to these games to come and support our players on. A permission form will be sent out in the coming days, so I highly encourage all boys to sign up to enjoy what is always a great battle between two arch rivals. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport
Music Congratulations to Eugene Goh Camberwell Grammar School student Eugene Goh has been awarded his ATCL Diploma with Distinction on Harp. This Diploma is awarded by Trinity College of Music in London. Candidates for the Diploma must perform demanding Harp recital and pass a rigorous theory exam. Eugene’s ATCL is the highest achievement of any Camberwell Grammar Harpist to date.
Music Society of Victoria Annual Music Competition Last Sunday, the Music Society of Victoria held their annual Music Competition. Flautist Freddie Branson (Year 9) was awarded second prize in the 15 years and under Wind Section and Cellist Nicholas Branson (Year 6) came second in the 12 years and under string section. Well done to both students.

CGS Auxiliary Christmas Pudding Preparation Has Begun! 2019 marks the 35th year that the GGS Auxiliary has overseen the making, selling and donating of traditional Christmas Puddings. While the puddings are delicious, the CGS crested bowls ubiquitous, and the funds raised have enhanced the school environment, the best thing about the puddings is the fun we have in making them! Come along and share in the camaraderie as we chop, soak, zest, pour, measure and mix our way to making more than 700 puddings. Please see the flyer containing further information on our Pudding preparation days. For any queries please contact thecgsauxiliary@gmail.com.
Cafeteria Roster The Auxiliary is seeking assistance from parents who are available to volunteer one or two mornings per Term, to assist staff in the Cafeteria. We ideally would like to have two parent volunteers per day. The hours are 9.30am to 1.00pm. It is a fun way to meet other parents and feel connected to the Camberwell Grammar School community. If you are interested, the cafeteria roster for Term 2 of 2019 is now open. Please volunteer by clicking on the link below. If you are able, please fill in the first two weeks as that greatly helps with the organising. Please visit www.volunteersignup.org/MBMW7.
