School Prefects 2020

School Prefects 2020

We have now begun the process of Prefect selection for 2020. Students in Year 11 who are interested in being considered for a role have been asked to apply, and to indicate their preference and suitability for a particular “portfolio”, for which they will be responsible for next year. We will have a maximum of nineteen Prefects in the following portfolios: • School Captain • School Vice-Captain • House Captain (8) • Captain of Games • Captain of Music • Captain of Public Speaking and Debating • Captain of Drama • Faith and Social Justice Prefect • Junior and Middle School Liaison Prefect • Environment and Sustainability Prefect • Publications Prefect • Senior Cadet Under Officer (SCUO) The process for the selection of Prefects is as comprehensive and transparent as we can make it, and much time is spent selecting an effective team. It involves a formal application, student and staff voting and an interview. I have written to the parents of all Year 11 students, explaining the process, and we hope to have the appointments announced early in Term 4. This will allow a formal handover to occur with our current Prefects, and will also allow our new Prefects the opportunity to participate in the Year 8 camp and Year 7 (2020) Orientation Day at the end of the year. Their role in these activities is invaluable as they support and welcome new boys to both Senior and Middle School.

We are extremely pleased to once again host and convene this year’s Agendo Art Competition for emerging artists. The Arts have always held an important place within our School, and we have always encouraged our students to explore their own artistic dimensions. This competition represents an attempt to reach out to the world beyond the School and to support the artistic endeavour of young adults in a practical and useful way offering a $10,000 first prize, sponsored by Mr Peter Crone. I warmly invite you to come, support and encourage our finalists by joining us at the Opening Night on Thursday 8 August 2019 between 6.30pm and 9.00pm in the David Williams Gallery, Camberwell Grammar School. If you are unable to attend on the Opening Night there will still be an opportunity for you to attend the Exhibition, which runs in the Gallery from Thursday 8 August to Wednesday 14 August 2019. Further details can be found in the attached Invitation and Exhibition Program.

Middle School Reminder - Galápagos and Amazon Tour Information Evening Tuesday 6 August, 7.00pm, Camberwell Room We are delighted to have had such a positive response to the Galápagos Islands and Peruvian Amazon Tour and can now provide additional information pertaining to the application process for the Camberwell Grammar School Galápagos/Amazon Tour, planned for September next year. Most importantly, there will be an Information Evening on Tuesday 6 August, 7.00pm in the Camberwell Room. This will be an ideal time to discover all this trip has to offer, but also to provide answers to any questions you might have. Please click here for more details and here for the proposed itinerary.

Australian Mathematics Competition Yesterday all Middle School boys took part in the Australian Mathematics Competition. Since its inception in 1978, the competition has received over 15 million entries from students in more than 30 countries who have attempted the same problems each year. Results will be made available later this Term.

Year 7 Indonesian Excursion The Year 7 students visited the Indonesian Village at CERES last Monday where they participated in a range of activities and workshops. The boys had to memorise and perform the vibrant and fast-paced Sumatran dance called Saman. They also tried their hand at Wayang Kulit (shadow puppets) and worked together to play several songs using Angklung (traditional musical instruments made from bamboo). They learnt about bargaining and were able to use their knowledge of Indonesian numbers to negotiate a good price at the handicraft stall. Finally, the boys created a simple artwork using hot wax and coloured dyes – a process known as Batik. The boys enjoyed these new experiences while enhancing their knowledge of the culture and language of our nearest neighbour.

Camberwell Girls Grammar School Production Last Wednesday our Year 6 boys were invited to attend the Matinee Performance of ‘Secret in the Wings’. It was a brilliant performance with laughter, dancing and a fitting reminder to us all to remember to have fun.

Winter Sport It was a wonderful to support the Hockey and Soccer teams competing in the Grand Finals at Trinity and PEGS and it was pleasing to see so many Middle School boys out there. Best wishes to all teams who play their last round of Winter Sport tomorrow. Many thanks to the coaches, parents and siblings who have provided great support to the boys as they learn to manage the successes and disappointments that come with sport. Page 2

Congratulations to Will Watson (Year 6) who competed in the U12 50m Freestyle with a time of 30.03s (16th in the Country) and 8th in 4x50m Medley Relay. We wish our Snowsports Team the very best this weekend at Mt Buller at the Inter-Schools Cross Country Competition. Mr Mark Mews, Director of Athletics, will be holding an Information Session on Thursday 8 August from 5.00pm to 6.00pm in the Camberwell Room. This will be useful for Middle School parents and students new to Athletics.

Tassie Trek At the conclusion of the academic year, Year 8 students will have the opportunity to participate in an extended hike in the Tasman National Park in Tasmania. The trip is the 54th consecutive occasion and this year will run from Friday 13 December to Thursday 19 December, 2019. During the week away, the group will hike through breathtaking terrain and camp out under the stars for five of the six nights. Students will learn about themselves, teamwork and how to become more sustainable. More detailed information is available on the Middle School Parent Portal Page and an Information Evening will also be held on Tuesday 20 August at 7.30pm in the Quinn Lecture Theatre (Wheelton Centre). All parents interested in their son attending the camp are asked to attend. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School Poem in Your Pocket Throughout this Term all Junior School boys are encouraged to memorise one of their favourite poems. They can keep a copy of it in their pocket to pull out and practise when they can. Boys can present their poem to their class and Mr Howard Kelly is always keen to hear boys recite their poems. Some will be chosen to present to the weekly Assembly. Parents might like to share some of their favourite poems with their son, or help him choose one that might capture his imagination and enthusiasm to learn by heart.

Years 4/5/6 Athletics Trials The Athletics Trials will be held on Friday 9 August at Box Hill Athletics Track (Hagenauer Reserve). Students are required to wear correct House Sports uniform. All boys are requested to bring a packed lunch and drink bottle and Year 6 boys need to ensure they have their asthma medication if necessary. Year 4 and 5 Teachers will bring all medication for Junior School boys. Please note – NO lunch orders on this day. Boys going home with parents from the venue at 2.20pm must be ticked on the reply slip which was handed out last week. Huw Jones, Director of Junior School Sport Howard Kelly, Head of Junior School

Sport

This weekend marks the final round of the AGSV Winter Season and we have a blockbuster matches schedule. Firsts Hockey and Soccer play in their respective grand finals against Trinity and PEGS this afternoon, while Firsts Badminton play in their grand final tomorrow against Yarra Valley. Also, other than those participating in Athletics or Water Polo, it is the last time many of our current Year 12s will represent the School in Sport. Thank you, Year 12s, for your years of service to the Sport programme. Having said that, some sports continue beyond this weekend, including Baseball, Fencing, Real Tennis and Snowsports. Good luck to Arya Aminazad (Year 9), who is the lone representative competing at the Snowsports Interschools Cross Country Championships this weekend. While he is racing, other members of the Snowsports squad will be training in preparation for the skiing and snowboarding championships coming up in the next few weeks. The Spring Sport Season gets underway next week. Students should now be aware of training times. If not, students are encouraged to come to the Sports Office for clarification. We are looking forward to short but intense seasons of Athletics and Water Polo. A reminder that end of season presentation nights are coming up for some sports. Invitations will be emailed to parents and also posted in the Bulletin. It would be great to see as many students and families there as possible to celebrate the season. If you have any concerns or questions regarding Sport, contact the staff member in charge of your son’s team or contact the Director of Sport at dos@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report Last Friday, our First Hockey team hosted Ivanhoe in what turned out to be a captivating semi-final. Camberwell came out strong early, putting a goal on the board in the first five minutes with some intelligent running by Ryan Box Year 12) and neat finishing by Michael Hare (Year 9). However, Ivanhoe then scored two goals almost instantly to put them up 2-1. Camberwell came out strong in the second half and put the game back on their terms. Rapid ball movement and smart play inside the circle, saw Nick Gooden (Year 12) score a classy hat trick to give Camberwell a comfortable 6-2 win, advancing to the Grand Final to be played next week against Trinity. With a spot in the AGSV final up for grabs for the first time in 10 years, the First XI Soccer team had to work especially hard to progress through, as ladder positioning meant that a draw would see Trinity progress into the final. Camberwell attacked hard early in the first half, but a strong Trinity defence made it almost impossible to score. Camberwell held strong in defence led by outstanding efforts from Dean Christofilopoulos (Year 11) and Henry Macdonald (Year 12). Tristan Patsiotis and Christopher Han (both Year 12) continued to create chances offensively, however the boys could not capitalise, with numerous shots an inch away from finding the back of the net. With only 4 minutes left on the clock the ball found Jasper Guthrie (Year 12) who was able to bury the ball into the top of the goal and all but secure a Camberwell victory. Some crucial late work in goals by captain Niko Verrios (Year 12) ensured the victory with the scores finishing 1-0. Next week’s Grand Final is against PEGS. In their penultimate race for the season, the Cross-Country squad travelled to Banyule in near perfect conditions to compete. The Senior competition was highlighted by another dominant Tom Bowers (Year 11) run as he finished 4th on the day. Matthew Power (Year 11) and captain Alexander Seidler (Year 12) also ran strongly with both finishing in the top 20. Camberwell’s Junior squad continues to impress with Harrison Car (Year 7) looking certain to finish with a podium finish by the end of the season, while Lachlan Young (Year 7) and Denton Chan (Year 8) recorded their best placings for the season. The Inter A Football team had a resounding win on the weekend getting the best of PEGS by 62 points. Led by Lachlan Ross (Year 9), Flynn Chable, Sam Rendell and Ty Beechey (all Year 10) in the midfield, Camberwell started strong kicking 3 quick goals to be up by 13 points at quarter time. From there, it was an impressive rally from the boys who headed to the rooms at half time up by 4 goals and full of belief for their much anticipated first win in the A competition. Caleb Finlayson and Sam Veitch (both Year 9) combined well during the third and fourth quarters to solidify Camberwell’s lead and after a full 4 quarter effort, Camberwell ensured the victory was secured. Congratulations to our First Badminton, Soccer and Hockey teams who have successfully made it into their respective AGSV grand finals. Each of these team’s dedication and persistence throughout the season has paid off handsomely for them, and we wish them all the best of luck bringing the championship(s) back home.  Sam Garrard, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Christmas Puddings - We Need Your Help! Mixing Days The Christmas Pudding preparation has well and truly begun. A big thank you to all who have helped chop, zest and weigh so far. Our mixing and cooking days are now in sight! This part of the process requires ‘many hands to make light work’ and to make it easy the two-hour Friday morning mixing sessions have been divided into year levels. Absolutely no baking skills are required, and even if you can only spare an hour it is very much appreciated. If you cannot make your year levels allocated day, feel free to jump into one of the others, everyone is welcome to any or all sessions! These sessions are a great opportunity to meet and chat with other parents. There has been a lot of laughs and stories shared already! If you have time stay after the preparation is done for a cuppa and some morning tea. Please visit www.volunteersignup.org/9EPC7 to let us know that you would like to join in and be part of this fantastic CGS tradition which raises significant funds for the School and spreads a bit of cheer through our community every Christmas. Cooking Days The Auxiliary are also looking for volunteers to help with the pudding cooking which we do over the weekend following each mixing day using the CGS Camberwell Room Kitchen ovens. It only takes fifteen minutes of your time to unload a batch and load in the next and if we have plenty of helpers it lightens our load. Detailed instructions and a demonstration will be given. For any queries please contact thecgsauxiliary@gmail.com. Pudding Orders Please visit www.trybooking.com.com/BBAGF to place your order or fill in the order form here and return the Development Office. Puddings can be collected from as early as mixing day two, Friday 9 August in the Camberwell Room of the Sports Centre (Level 3).

Friends of Performing Arts Music Bags Protect your music with a CGS Music Bag for only $20. Purchase them here www.trybookings.com/NKAN and choose delivery to either the Music or Junior School Offices. Please see this flyer for more information.
