High standards of dress and appearance are part of our overall commitment to excellence in everything we do. Our students have an excellent reputation in the community for the way that they wear their uniform and I am keen to ensure that we maintain this.

In order to maintain this high standard, students are reminded to observe the following School rules in relation to haircuts, as outlined in the Student Diary (Page 16):

“Haircuts should be smart and moderate. Extremes of styles are not permitted. Hair must not touch the collar, nor be styled in such a way that it is capable, at any time, of falling forwards towards the eyes or face. Novelty styles, including undercuts of any kind are not permitted, nor may hair be shaved in part or whole. No boy is permitted to gel or dye his hair, nor use any spray or accessory to artificially hold it in place. Sideburns, irrespective of length, are not permitted. It is to be noted that, in matters of hairstyle, the School remains the final arbitrator of what constitutes an acceptable haircut”.

From next week, students who come to school with unacceptable haircuts may be sent home until they are able to remedy the matter. I do thank all parents in advance for their support in ensuring that their son’s appearance is neat, tidy and appropriate at all times.
Examination Period I would like to congratulate our Year 11 and 12 students on the manner with which they approached the examination and SAC period. Yesterday’s GAT also ran smoothly. Year 11 and 12 classes now resume as normal and I wish our Year 9 and 10 boys all the best as they now enter their examination period.
Student Free Day A reminder that Monday 24 June is a Student Free Day in both Middle and Senior School, as teachers complete examination marking and end-of-semester reports. Semester 2 classes will commence on Tuesday 25 June 2019. Rob French, Acting Headmaster

Yesterday we welcomed visitors from Fintona Girls’ School and Camberwell Girls Grammar School for the highly anticipated Projec10. This was the introductory planning day where the foundation for the program was established. During the morning session, the philosophy and philanthropic elements were outlined, groups were allocated and students from all Schools had the chance to meet each other. Groups will now go away to plan some initiatives ahead of the second planning day to consolidate their creative and entrepreneurial concepts. Knowing this group, I am excited to see what they come up with.
Something Special - An Exhibition Of Works By Middle School Artists This semester all Middle School artists have explored, developed and resolved a series of two and three dimensional artworks that respond to the idea or concept of ‘Something Special’. Artists were asked to reflect upon imagery, subject matter or personal experiences that are special to them and, to also contribute a photograph of themselves with something special for inclusion in the collaborative Photographic Portrait Collage. The results were incredible.

Best of luck to all our boys representing CGS tomorrow in Sport. I look forward to seeing many parents and students on the sidelines.
Year 6 Camp Congratulations to our Year 6 boys who completed a challenging and rewarding camp at Mt Eliza. The boys took part in a wide range of activities aimed to stretch them beyond their comfort zones and strengthen friendships. It was great to spend the night by the campfire cooking marshmallows on Thursday night.
End Of Term Arrangements Middle School will finish Term 2 at 3.00pm on Friday 28 June, following our traditional end of Term Assembly in the PAC.

We have had a slight change to the program with the Middle School Swimming Carnival now taking place on Friday 28 June in the last week of Term. Boys have been allocated into a program to suit their swimming ability. Year 6 and 7 will compete during Periods 1 and 2, and Year 8 will do so in Periods 4 and 5. Parents are welcome to come and watch on the mezzanine level beside the Strength and Conditioning Room.

Junior School Junior School House Cross Country On Wednesday 5 June, all Year 3, 4 and 5 students competed in the Junior School House Cross Country event. The Year 3 and 4 students ran a distance of 2km’s whilst the Year 5 boys ran 2.5 km’s around Shenley Reserve and back towards School. The overall winner for the event was Schofield with an average finishing place of 22nd. It was Schofield’s first win since 2009. Footy Day 28 June Let’s celebrate half-time on the last day of Term by wearing team colours, playing kick-to-kick and having a treat! Boys can wear sports uniform to and from School and bring their team footy gear (jumper, beanie, cap, scarf or favourite soccer or basketball team top) to be worn at lunchtime. Friends of Norge will provide a sausage sizzle, cupcakes and fruit juice for lunch. Senior School boys from the First XVIII will join us for lunch and then accompany the boys over to the JTO for football drills and skills instead of the normal lunch play session. A letter and sausage sizzle order form will go home in your son’s Diary soon. This is a wonderful way to finish the Term and the half-way mark of the year. The Amazing Adventures of Superstan Stanley Marvel may be the clumsiest clot in Megaville, but with a dose of secret formula and a pair of fantastic elastic anti-gravity underpants, Stanley takes to the skies as the greatest Superhero the world has ever known. Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s Superstan - a caped crusader fighting for truth, freedom and justice with his super powers, super tights and the strength to open a really tricky jar of pickles! The boys in Years 3, 4 and 5 are working hard developing their characters in preparation for the Junior School musical production The Amazing Adventures of Superstan. This production is a wonderful introduction to live theatre for our upper primary students. In rehearsal, the boys are enjoying learning about stagecraft as the show comes together with storyline, song, set, lighting, sound, costumes…and your applause. This humorous story will be staged in the Middleton Theatre in the last week of this Term. This weekend is the final week of Sport fixtures for the Term for most sports. Baseball continues beyond this weekend, therefore baseball students and families should liaise with the teacher in charge of their team. Sport training has also finished, although Cross Country and some other teams will continue to train. Training for all teams and students recommences in Term 3 from Tuesday 16 July. The final three rounds of AGSV Sport are fixtured for the first three weeks of Term 3. Following that, the Spring season commences. Well done to Declan Woolf (Year 12), who represented Venus Beach Surf Life Saving Club in the Victorian Surf Life Saving Championships in Warrnambool over the long weekend. Whilst he and his team did not medal, Declan was named as Venus Bay Club Champion for his age group and equal champion in the Open Division. Is your son looking to keep fit in the lead up to and over the holidays, or wanting to improve his running technique? Elitewellbeing are continuing to host running sessions at the KAO on Monday and Friday mornings from 6.45am to 8.15am during Week 9 and on Friday only in Week 10. Sessions will also be held over the holidays. They will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.00am to 11.00am. Students are highly encouraged to attend. Music Eisteddfod Results Congratulations to Arman Cakmakcioglu (Year 11) and Joseph Pang (Year 10) who participated in the 18 and under Piano Section in the Boroondara Eisteddfod in May. Arman won first prize playing Bach and Joseph won second prize playing Ravel. In addition to this, at the recent Ringwood Eisteddfod, Matthew Wu ( Year 11) won First Prize in the Piano Concerto Section and Darby Lee (Year 9) came Third with the rarely performed Rautavaara Piano Concerto. Congratulations Matthew and Darby.

2019 VCE Results and ATAR Release The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) and Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) recently announced that the 2019 VCE results and ATAR will now be released to students at 7.00am Thursday 12 December 2019. This new date is 24 hours before the date that was previously published. This change provides additional time for students to receive their results, access support services, and make change of preference decisions prior to the end of the year.
Box Hill Institute Opens Its Doors Box Hill Institute’s Nelson campus is renowned for its edgy design facilities, million dollar music suites, an active cyber security operations centre, a fully fitted-out gym, and dynamic business and accounting classes. On Tuesday 18 June 2019 from 4.00pm to 7.00pm, students will be able to undertake a tour of the campus and learn more about the courses on offer. Register at Careers, Courses, and Connections Event.
ACU University Experience Days On Tuesday 2 July 2019 students are invited to ACU’s University Experience Day. This is a free program that gives students the opportunity to sample life at ACU by meeting academic staff and current students – and trying out the course they are interested in. Undertake two workshops from the following: Nursing, Midwifery, Business, Paramedicine, Education, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Public Health, Exercise Science, among others. Register at University Experience Days. Students keen on studying Nursing, Midwifery, or Paramedicine, might like to attend a specific event where they will hear from a panel of health practitioners on what it is really like to work in the industry. This event, which includes a tour of the Melbourne Campus, will take place from 4.00pm to 6.00pm on Tuesday 9 July 2019. Register at Talk with Nurses, Midwives and Paramedics.
Medicine at the University of Tasmania The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is an on-campus full-time five year course. Years 1-3 of the course are based in Hobart at the Medical Science Precinct, with short placements in rural communities around the state. In Years 4 and 5, students have the opportunity to complete their degree at the Hobart Clinical School, the Launceston Clinical School or the Rural Clinical School in Burnie. On completion, graduates will be eligible for provisional registration to work in approved hospitals while training as an intern. To be considered for entry, students need a minimum ATAR of 95, with English and Chemistry, and a competitive score in the UCAT Applications for the MBBS must be received by 5.00pm on Friday 27 September 2019.
Swinburne-ConocoPhillips Science Experience Year 9 and 10 students who are excited about science are invited to join the Swinburne-ConocoPhillips Science Experience. The action-packed program will help students see where a career in science can take them. This three day event costs $190 and will occur from 10 to 12 July 2019 at Swinburne’s Hawthorn Campus. Friends of Soccer Scarves Keep Warm This Winter! CGS sports and supporters’ scarves can be purchased from the Development Office at $16.00 each. They are for both students and parents of students who may wish to wear it during Winter School Sports. These scarves are accepted as part of the School Uniform and may be worn to and from school.
