53rd Senior School House Music Competition
We enjoyed a wonderful evening last night as all students in the Senior School competed in our Annual House Music Competition. The House Music Competition is run entirely by the students themselves. Each House selects its items for the instrumental and choral sections. We are grateful to the large number of parents who came along also to support this event. The quality of the performances this year was very even and our Adjudicator, Dr Jonathon Welch AM, found it very difficult to separate the work of the choirs and instrumental ensembles. Congratulations to Steven House, which emerged with a history-making third successive win. This competition requires the active participation of every student in every House, and it requires them to work together at a task which many of them find difficult, and for them all to overcome any inhibitions they may have about singing in public. The end result is a wonderful illustration of what our students can achieve when they have a clear vision and a dedicated sense of purpose. Congratulations and thank you to all involved – Heads of House, House staff, Student Conductors, Arrangers and Performers – and also to Mr Ben Bishop and his talented Music Staff for providing the support and guidance required to make this such a wonderful event. Congratulations go to the first three place winners:

I am pleased to announce a new and strategic Executive position within our School - Head of ICT Innovation and Learning. We are hoping that this new position will take Camberwell Grammar School to the forefront of innovative practice in the use of technology across the curriculum. The role will also have responsibility for the School’s ICT Staff, systems and infrastructure and the operational service delivery to the School and School Community. After an extensive search process, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Jenny Luca to the position. Jenny has amassed a wealth of experience in teaching, management and executive leadership and is currently Head of Digital Learning and Practice at Wesley College where she has helped staff to implement digital learning strategies and has overseen the implementation of a new Learning Management System. Courage to Care Workshops
53rd Senior School House Music Competition
The volunteers from Courage to Care were most complimentary of our Year 8 cohort, for the mature and respectful manner that they conducted themselves during the workshops held at School on Monday and Tuesday. During this time, interactive groups explored the atrocities of the Holocaust and the lessons that we can all take from it. The group recognised CGS’s Rohan Hodges (11CLI), as a ‘Local Hero’, for his contributions to community. It was interesting to draw the similarities between the School’s Values and those of the Courage to Care organisation; most notably, the courage and integrity to takes to be an ‘upstander’. Hopefully this conversation has continued at home.

Year 7 Camp Year 7 will be venturing to Lord Somers on Monday, for the Annual Year 7 Camp. The Camp has been placed in the middle of term to give the boys a well-earned break from school and homework routines, as well as presenting further opportunities for them to establish and strengthen bonds. We wish staff and students a fun, safe and fulfilling week at camp. The camp booklet can be found on Schoology and the Parent Portal.
Districts Swimming Congratulations to our Year 6 and Junior School boys for their effort out at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Wednesday. Farewell Charlie Gore After four years of outstanding service guiding and managing the morning and afternoon traffic flow, our CGS Traffic Controller, Charlie, finishes up at CGS on Friday 8 March. Charlie is a favourite with parents and boys alike and will certainly be missed. We thank him for his cheerful, helpful manner and attentiveness to the safety of all driveway users. In his stead Dave Johns will take up the role and I am sure will have the full support and kindness of drivers and passengers alike.

A reminder that our Term 1 Music Soiree will be held on Wednesday 13 March at 6.00pm in the Music and Movement Centre. If your son is planning to play in the Soiree, he should have collected a form from the M and M Centre and taken it to his music lesson so that his music teacher can fill out the performance details. You may download the form from the Junior School Music page. It is important that music teachers assist their students in the preparation of their performance pieces. Performance details for the Term 1 Soiree must be returned to the Music Office or Junior School Office by next Monday 4 March. Boys who learn an instrument outside the school are most welcome to participate. This informal concert should conclude at about 7.30pm.

Final Round of AGSV Summer Sport

The final round of the AGSV Summer Sport season is upon us. For many Year 12 students, it is their final match of Summer Sport. Good luck and thank you to all Year 12s for their commitment and dedication to the Sports Programme over the years. A reminder that some sports continue beyond this weekend, including Cycling, Golf, Kayaking, Lawn Bowls, Orienteering, Squash, Swimming and Triathlon. Firsts Table Tennis are playing in the AGSV Grand Final this weekend against Trinity. The boys have had an impressive season to date and are looking to take the School’s AGSV Premiership tally to 92. If you are interested in watching, the match will be played on Level 4 of the Sports Centre from 10am. On Friday afternoon, the Swimming squads is competing in another Duel in the Pool against Mentone. Colours for Firsts teams are being determined and will be advertised in the coming weeks. Students will have one week to view and challenge any of the decisions made.
Sport Presentation Evenings Invitations have started to be sent regarding Sport Presentation evenings. They will be sent by email and can also be found as an attachment to the Bulletin. Organised through Friends of Groups, they are fantastic evenings to celebrate the season and to recognise student achievements.
Winter Sports Trials Winter Sport trials for Firsts teams will commence in the last few weeks of Term 1 in preparation for the beginning of the AGSV Winter Sport season in Term 2. For more information, consult the Firsts coach of the sport or email dos@cgs.vic.edu.au.
Running Sessions Running sessions with Craig Mottram and his team continue to take place throughout the remainder of Term 1 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. The sessions start at 6.45am on the KAO and are open to students of all ages and abilities. The focus of the sessions is to improve running technique, endurance and speed.
Sports Report For their last game of the season, the First V Basketball team played the CGS Old Boys in their annual encounter. The low scoring affair saw the old boys up at halftime, however, they soon started to fatigue, with the Firsts capitalising on the opportunity to take the lead. Some great young talent was on display as Flynn Chable (Year 10) and debutante Sam Veitch (Year 9) starred. Led by MVP Jack Amling (Year 12), the Firsts emerged victorious with their first win in 4 years. With their careers in blue and gold now over, co-captains Josh Marino (Year 12) and Jack Amling were recognised for their incredible hard work and dedication to Firsts Basketball program over their tenure. The remaining boys of the team hope to see them in next year’s game. The 9A cricket team continued their strong season with a comprehensive 22 run win against Trinity at Gordon Barnard Oval on Saturday. In perfect conditions for T20 cricket, Camberwell won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that would deteriorate for the bowlers later on. Facing up to a highly talented bowling outfit, CGS were able to reach 89 with notable contributions from Mitch Horn, Ed Harper and Lachie Ross. Following this, their bowling performance was exceptional, dismissing Trinity for only 67. Will Howell led the way, taking 3 wickets for only 2 runs after his 4 overs. A great team effort demonstrated by every bowler taking at least 1 wicket, supported by brilliant glove work from Harry Gittins.

The 7A tennis team travelled to PEGS (Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School) to face a very competitive and talented opposition. The Kuti brothers, Orlando and Kadell, excelled as they led an excellent fight in order to get wins in their respective doubles and singles matches, as well as the team as a whole. Unfortunately, Camberwell were unable to secure the win, however the team’s persistence all day bodes well for their future endeavours. Up against a very capable Ivanhoe team, the 4ths Bears Basketball team played with great fight and determination. After being 8 points behind at half time, Camberwell managed to claw Ivanhoe’s lead back to only 2 points through sheer determination. However, after a couple of injuries, the team were unable to capitalise on their gains. Nonetheless the boys never once gave up, maintaining their composure to the end. 7A Basketball had a gut-wrenchingly close game against Mentone. Camberwell were down 8 points at half time as Mentone got on top of the game early. However a spirited comeback led by Ryder Cheesman and Jackson Haintz saw the team tie the score with 5 minutes to go. A 3-pointer for Mentone gave them some breathing space and despite a gritty fightback Camberwell could not manage to get back in front by the final siren. Nonetheless, this remained a valiant effort from every member of the team that should give the boys great confidence in their final game of the season. Good luck to all teams in their final round of summer sport. Sam Garrard, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

It is difficult to put the feeling and experience of House Music 2019 into words. This year we were treated not only to fine musicianship, valiant competition and courageous leadership but also a profound sense of mutual appreciation, support and kindness between houses during the rehearsal process. At our weekly meetings, the group of conductors for 2019 would regularly discuss, workshop and practice elements of rehearsal technique and musicianship; while the final rehearsals in the PAC drew a large crowd of students each lunch time to support their friends, and perhaps gain insight into their competition. It is often said that “music” is the “winner” of the night, but perhaps this year it is not only music that has come out victorious this year, but also a strengthening of our school community through bonds of friendship, shared experience and empathy. Of course, congratulations go to the history-making achievement of Steven house, winning 3 consecutive years in a row. Their planning, preparation and effort has again supported them to first place this year, with their use of dynamic contrast in particular, setting them apart from the other houses. I hope that all the boys are proud of what we create when we sing together. It is something truly special and surprisingly unique amongst boys and men, but so valuable in so many ways. Once again, our whole school has come together through song and this is only possible with the support from every level of the school community. On behalf of the Music Department and the musicians of CGS, I would like to sincerely thank all the staff, parents and boys who make our community a wonderful place to be every day. Ben Bishop, Director of Music
