From the Headmaster Thank You Thank you so much to the many members of our community who have offered their best wishes, support and assistance to both the School and to the family of Ms Suzan Davies this week. The overwhelming response has clearly shown that we are part of a special and caring community. I know that all of our thoughts are with Suzan’s family at this time.

Welcome Back Welcome back to Term 2. I hope that everyone was able to enjoy some quality time together during the vacation break. As we enter this Term, I encourage all students to maintain focus on their studies and continue with the momentum gained during Term 1. All students will face a semester reporting cycle later this term, and our senior students will sit examinations towards the end of this Term.

ANZAC Dawn Service Thank you to all of the families who supported our ANZAC Dawn Service yesterday. Over 400 people filled the Wheelton Amphitheatre at 6.00am for a moving service, which honoured the memory of Australian soldiers, and in particular our past students, who lost their lives in war. Our guest speaker was CGS parent Brigadier Greg McGlone, who provided us with an understanding of why acts of remembrance like this are so important, and reminded us of the Australian service men and women who are currently deployed in dangerous regions across the globe. Thank you to Officer Commanding Major (AAC) Michael Neal, Dr John Tuckfield and our team of Cadet Officers who made the event possible, with the support of our Cadet Auxiliary who provided a wonderful breakfast to all of those who attended.

ANZAC Day Assembly Last Wednesday we also held a special ANZAC Day Assembly, when we took time to reflect and honour the sacrifice of those who fought in the First World War. We particularly remembered those past students of our School who lost their lives while serving our country. Mr John Allen delivered a powerful address about his father, a veteran of World War II and the vital role that legacy has played in his life. Mr Hamish Green read out the names of the fallen Grammarians and as each name was read, a member of our Cadet Unit came forward to stand in silent tribute. It was a poignant reminder of the loss that the School community suffered at the time.

Parent Education Seminar Our next Parent Education Seminar for parents only, will be on “The Parent’s Survival Guide to Children, Technology and the Internet”, and will take place at 7.00pm on Tuesday 30 April 2019 at Camberwell Girls Grammar School. Please let our convenor of the Parent Education Seminar series, Mr John Allen, know if you are intending to come: mja@cgs.vic.edu.au. Further information is included in a flyer later in this Bulletin.

Welcome Mrs Gabby Shaw On 1 April, Mrs Gabby Shaw joined us as the EA to the Head of Middle School/Middle School Office Coordinator. Mrs Shaw in recent times has worked in the education sector and will be of great assistance to the Middle School community. I am sure you will all make her feel welcome.

Winter Sport Winter Sports practice commenced this week. I am sure that the pre-season efforts with Mr Sartori and Mr Mottram will provide those boys with additional confidence. Boys are reminded to bring a towel and tracksuit in order to be able to shower and get changed into something warm at the completion of sports practice. A reminder that the Gym is open especially for Year 7 and 8 boys at lunch on Wednesdays.

Friday Activities Friday activities started today with a wide array of opportunities outside of the classroom on offer. I thank our staff and boys for their enthusiastic approach; it is a wonderful way to finish the week. Our Year 6 boys will take part in a special Sports activities program with a focus on preparing them for an inter-school Sports Round Robin starting in Week 4.

Australian Athletics Championships Congratulations to the following CGS students who represented Victoria at the 2019 Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney during the last week of Term 1: Sebastian Beck (Year 8) ran well in the U15 100m and put in a great performance considering he has been injured for the last 8 weeks. He ran 12.29s but also just missed the final. Sebastian also ran in the U15 200m finishing 11th in a time of 24.71s. Zac Matters (Year 7) walked well in the U14 3000m Race Walk. Zac finished 6th and recorded a PB time of 15:58.72.

Junior School

Welcome back to second Term in Junior School. I trust that you were able to enjoy some family time over the Easter Break. With the first Term under their belt, the boys are well positioned to consolidate and expand their learning. At the start of each Term all boys are asked to think about the Term ahead and set some meaningful goals, and determine ways of achieving them. It might be a valuable exercise to take a moment to discuss your son’s aspirations and action steps. Term 1 ended in fine style with boys singing beautifully throughout the Easter Service at St Mark’s. Congratulations boys, and also Mrs Thomas, Mrs Fry and Mrs Natalie for their excellent preparations. Term 2 sees the boys involved in the Winter Sports program as well as all boys in Year 3-5 preparing for the Junior Musical Production. On Friday 10 May, the Mother’s Day Breakfast early morning gathering is a chance for mums to enjoy some time together with their sons. Please remember to pre-purchase your breakfast following this link www.trybooking.com/BBRSH. Yes, the term ahead is full of promise. Enjoy! Page 2

The first round of sport for the majority of teams occurs on Saturday 4 May. The fixtures can be found on the Parent Portal, but please note that they are subject to change and will be confirmed in the week leading up to the round. Direct any questions or concerns to dos@cgs.vic.edu.au. The Football Season Launch was well attended last Wednesday night. Guests were entertained by guest speaker and Old Boy, Paul Hudson, and the Firsts were presented with their jumpers. Thank you to Friends of Football who organised and hosted the fantastic event.

Music

Thank you to the CGS Chorale and the Senior Brass Ensemble for your contribution to the ANZAC Day Dawn Service yesterday morning. While it is always difficult arriving at School before sunrise on a chilly April morning, your presence, preparation and effort were very much appreciated by the large crowd gathered in the pre-dawn to mark ANZAC Day this year. As a staff member, OCGA member and former Cadet Under Officer, I was so proud of the way in which all of the boys and staff carried themselves and supported each other during the rehearsal and the moving service and I am grateful for the services of many parents delivering their sons to school at 5.45am on a public holiday too. The Chorale led the singing beautifully and the Senior Brass Ensemble had put many hours of rehearsal in to create the moving and traditional accompaniment to the Hymns and National Anthem. In particular, I would like to thank Mr Chris Day, Head of Brass for his leadership with establishing and rehearsing this ensemble. Thanks and congratulations also to Daniel Watson (Year 10) for his playing of the Last Post and Revellie, and Henry Koswig (Year 12) and father Michael Koswig for their key roles on snare drum and bagpipes respectively.

CGS Auxiliary Christmas Pudding Preparation Has Begun! 2019 marks the 35th year that the GGS Auxiliary has overseen the making, selling and donating of traditional Christmas Puddings. While the puddings are delicious, the CGS crested bowls ubiquitous, and the funds raised have enhanced the school environment, the best thing about the puddings is the fun we have in making them! Come along and share in the camaraderie as we chop, soak, zest, pour, measure and mix our way to making more than 700 puddings. Please see the flyer containing further information on our Pudding preparation days. For any queries please contact thecgsauxiliary@gmail.com.

Cafeteria Roster The Auxiliary is seeking assistance from parents who are available to volunteer one or two mornings per Term, to assist staff in the Cafeteria. We ideally would like to have two parent volunteers per day. The hours are 9.30am to 1.00pm. It is a fun way to meet other parents and feel connected to the Camberwell Grammar School community. If you are interested, the cafeteria roster for Term 2 of 2019 is now open. Please volunteer by clicking on the link below. If you are able, please fill in the first two weeks as that greatly helps with the organising. Please visit www.volunteersignup.org/MBMW7.
