A very big year of music was brought to a conclusion at our annual Twilight Concerto Concert in the Music School last night. Organised and led by Mr Ben Bishop, our Director of Music, and Ms Lisa Grosman, our Head of Strings, staff and students performed superbly at the Concert, featuring some of our Year 12 students for the last time. Thank you to all of our music teachers for the wonderful work that they do with our students who clearly enjoyed performing for an appreciative audience.

Tomorrow we farewell a group of 15 students from Years 10 to 12 who will be travelling to Borneo to take part in an inaugural community service-based journey, where they will help multiple projects aimed at improving living standards, health and economic development in local communities. They will spend three weeks trekking, working on projects and spending valuable time working with and learning from the people in the region. I am grateful to Mr Roger Devine and Mr Rick Mason for providing this opportunity for our students.

Year 8 Kangaroobie Camp All Year 8 students will spend next week at Kangaroobie near Port Campbell. The focus of the camp will be on the students’ transition from the Middle School to the Senior School, and current Form Room Teachers and Heads of House will be at the camp in order to assist with this transition. A number of next Year’s Senior Student Leaders will also be at the camp to help with the activities. All of these experiences encourage each boy to discover more about himself and his fellow classmates. I am once again grateful to the teachers who give up time with their families to be with the students, and particularly to Mr Rhys Thomas, who has coordinated the program. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Roystead Awards Last Monday we presented the 2019 Roystead Awards. This award was designed to recognise students in Year 8 who are consistently respectful of others, give their best in all that they do, behave as good role models and display the ability to win with dignity and lose with grace. The award considers involvement as well as peer and student voting. Whilst it would have been nice to have given many more, we had to make a final list which included the following very worthy recipients:

Ben Jago Award Lachlan O’Neill is this year’s recipient of the Ben Jago award. This significant award is presented to a Year 8 boy who has enthusiastically contributed to the life of the School in three main areas: Sporting, Academic and Social. The award is designed to recognise good citizenship and support for others, willingness to get involved and a positive spirit towards all areas of School life.

Farewell to Year 8 It has been a special few days as we farewelled the Year 8 boys from Middle School this week. I wish them well for the camp and the Year 9 transition program the following week. We will miss their positive energy and exuberance in Middle School and I thank them as a cohort for their superb contribution to life in Middle School, especially this year.

Church Service We enjoyed our Advent Service at St Mark’s this morning, with the address proving a highlight. This was the final time that our three year levels would come together as a Middle School, so it was a special occasion.

House Competition Results Throughout the course of the year, boys in Year 6, 7 and 8 played together in a variety of games which were designed and administered by our Physical Education Teacher, Mr Charlie Lockwood. It was a great opportunity to exercise teamwork, leadership and skill. Here are the overall house results: 1st

Junior School Annual Maths Olympiad Contest Results

International Science Competition (ICAS)

It is a pleasure to announce that our Maths Olympiad Team, made up of 30 Year 4 and 5 students, were placed in the top 20% of all participating teams across Australia and New Zealand. Two of our boys excelled in their individual scores, which placed them in the top 2% of over 30,000 students that competed: Anson Wang (Year 5) and Lachlan Lee (Year 5), who was the team’s top scorer with only mark away from a perfect score. Five boys finished with an individual score which placed them in the top 10% of all participating students: Hamish Mitchell, Leo Qi, Melvin Zhang, Joseph Ni and Harish R-Roshan (all Year 5). Three boys finished with an individual score which placed them in the top 20%: Toby Miller (Year 5) and David Yang (Year 4), while Richard Su (Year 4) finished in the top 25%. On behalf of everyone at Camberwell Grammar School, I would like to extend congratulations to the team both on their excellent overall performance and individual progress and achievement.

Movember Assembly - Wednesday 4 December You may have noticed that some of the teachers are sporting a dashing new ‘moustachioed’ look around the School. This is not because they are making a bold fashion statement, but because they are supporting a worthy cause called Movember. Because Camberwell Grammar School is a boys’ school, we think that Movember is especially important. On Wednesday 4 December, we will have a special Mo-ssembly to celebrate Movember. The Mo-ssembly will be held in the Music and Movement Centre at 8.45am. Boys will wear stick on moustaches that will be provided by the School. We ask that each boy brings a gold coin donation before Wednesday 4 December to help support the cause. Classroom teachers will collect the gold coins. Thanks - from the Student Leadership Executive 2019.

Final Day Dismissal from St Mark’s Church Service 11.00am - 12 noon Thursday, 12 December The Christmas Church Service begins at 11.00am and will finish at approximately 12.00 noon and all boys will be dismissed from St Mark’s to leave with their parents. This impressive Service brings our year to a fitting conclusion and all families are invited to attend. The boys prepare special Christmas carols for you to enjoy. We kindly request that cameras are not used during the Church Service. Please note the following: • On this day, boys are to bring recess snack, not lunch, to School in disposable bags. We ask that school bags are not brought to school. • For this special occasion School uniform should be worn in the best possible condition with polished shoes and no jumpers, unless the weather is unseasonably cool. • At the conclusion of the service parents are asked to leave through the main doors immediately following the procession of the choir. • Boys are dismissed for the holidays at the conclusion of the Church Service, Year 3 to 5 through the main doors at the rear of the Church; Pre-Prep – Year 2 through the side doors to be collected from inside the gates to the car park. • Please note that there will be no After School Care on this day. No boys will return to the Junior School. • Friday, 13 December is a staff only day.
