September Concert

Congratulations to everyone involved in the magnificent Music Concert on Wednesday night in the Performing Arts Centre. The range and quality of the performances was extraordinary, and I felt privileged to be there and to be a part of it. The program allowed us to showcase the extraordinary range of musical talent that we have across our School with over 400 students performing on stage. Thank you to the very large number of School families who supported us by forming the capacity audience. Our Director of Music, Mr Ben Bishop and his members of the Music School staff have done an enormous amount of work over many months, and we are indeed fortunate to have such talented staff in our Music School who bring out the very best in our musicians. Congratulations and thank you to all of our musicians under the Captain of Music, Sebastian Csutoros, on a most memorable evening of music.

AGSV Athletics All the very best to our Athletics squad who head out to the Lakeside Oval for the AGSV Athletics Finals next Wednesday. The entire season rests on this one day, but I know our Athletes have been working hard to improve their performances and will do their very best on the day. This occasion marks the launch of the centenary of the AGSV competition, the celebrations for which will take place throughout next year. Camberwell won the very first AGSV Athletics meet in 1920, so hopefully we will put in a good show next week as well! Paul Hicks, Headmaster

A huge thank you to Mr Rhys Thomas and Ms Filiani Newton for all of their organisation and planning to help make this opportunity available to our boys.

Maths Games Day On Wednesday 28 August, the weather was crisp and the sun shining as Mr Peter Zagarn and eight Year 8 boys drove to Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School in Keilor to participate in the Maths Games. There were just under 400 students with nearly 100 teams participating from all over Victoria. The boys performed problem-solving activities and competitive games that involved numerical challenges. The CGS teams placed 18th and 33rd overall in a very close competition. Congratulations to Ashton Lu, Lachlan Ngyuen, Marcus Lim, Shivansh Kakkar, William Zhang, Ming Zhou, Issac Tan and Eric Wang. On Monday 2 September, eight Year 7 boys participated in a Maths Games Day at Waverley Christian College, Narre Warren South. Fifty teams participated in a range of Maths strategy games and puzzles culminating in a problem-solving team relay. CGS Team 1 (Joel Cheok, Ioan Hillard, Theodore Lam and Joshua Ng) finished 2nd overall and CGS Team 2 (Samuel Chan, Byron Zhang, Mark Thiel and Chris Lu) finished 8th overall. Korowa Anglican Girls’ were the winners on the day. The team was accompanied by Mr Mark Mews. Today Ross Armstong, Christopher Khong, Ethan Tran, Nicholas Wang, Ethan Lau, Austin Dai, Ashwin Lagana and Kye Yoshimura are participating in a Year 6 Maths Day at Genazzano College. Early reports have been very positive.

Social Media On Monday Elephant Ed ran workshops with Year 7 students on Sexting and Social Media. Many of our boys are armed with smartphones, so this workshop provided invaluable information for the boys (and staff) on the benefits and potential harm of these powerful devices. Parents are encouraged to continue this conversation and get in touch with the School if you would like more information. Family Zone also provides exceptional safety advice for parents.

Swimming Championships Last week five Middle School boys competed in the State Short Course Swimming Championships. All boys swam exceptionally well, whilst Hugh Cran who has kept his cards close to his chest, came out with a scintillating performance, placing 8th in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke final. Junior School Father’s Day Breakfast Last Friday, Father’s Day Breakfast in the Camberwell Room was an absolute delight. As always, the Friends of Norge and their many helpers ensured every aspect of the morning’s celebrations was done to perfection so the dads could relax with their sons and enjoy the bright start to the day. The Middle School Stage Band and the CGS big band played, while boys of all ages enjoyed a hearty breakfast. Thank you to all the dads who were able to attend and a huge thank you to the parents who worked so hard to make it a very special occasion. The boys were very proud and pleased to present their special artwork of their dad. Thank you to Mrs Sofia Tsolakis who helped the boys create something rather personal and special. Father/Son photos went home this week, we hope you enjoyed them.

Term 4 Junior School Swimming Program A reminder that the Junior School swimming program starts in week 1 and is a 6 week program during Term 4. Please remember to remind your sons to bring their Camberwell Grammar bathers, towel and swim cap on the days they are swimming. PrePrep to Year 3 will all be swimming on Fridays. Some classes will miss lessons due to other School events, but these will be made up in weeks 7 and 8. Sessions for other year levels are as follows: • 4A on Mondays • 4B on Thursdays • 5A on Thursdays • 5B on Tuesdays A full list of times and dates can be found on the Parent Portal. Huw Jones, Acting Director of Sports, Junior School

Life Education As part of our drug and health education next Term, we are having the Life Education mobile learning centre visit our School from Monday 21 October to Wednesday 23 October. Life Education delivers health and drug education through a unique mobile learning centre environment which helps students to develop strategies and practice the skills required to lead a healthy lifestyle. During this time, each class is scheduled to visit the Life Education van. Lessons are age appropriate and the children will be covering a wide range of health related topics, ranging from the human body and how it works, healthy eating and nutrition, medicines and drugs, bullying, resilience and social skills. Healthy Harold, the much loved Life Education giraffe mascot, is always a much anticipated element of the visit. The sessions are always fun, interactive and really extend and develop the children’s understanding of the topics covered. A Parent Information Session will be held on Monday 21 October from 8.30am to 9.00am in the Life Education van. This session enables parents to visit the mobile unit and see an audio-visual presentation that explains the topics discussed and the approach used by Life Education. These are important, as the concepts introduced need to be reinforced both at home and at school. If you are interested in attending, please fill in the sheet sent home in Week 1, Term 4 and return it by Friday 11 October. Caroline Gatley, Deputy Head of Junior School Curriculum

Lost Property As the Term draws to a close it is timely to remind parents to check the Lost Property table outside the Junior School Office. We currently have a number of uniform items, lunch boxes, drink bottles, etc. Some items have the name of the previous owner and we are able to pass these back to boys however most items are not named. Please take the time to check the Lost Property table which will be on display until Friday 13 September. The three week break is an opportunity to ensure all summer uniform items all labelled with your son’s name. Diane Collins, Deputy Head of Junior School Administration Page 3

It is grand final weekend for Water Polo this weekend. In the Junior A division, Camberwell Blue need to win one of their two matches this afternoon to claim the premiership, while Camberwell Crest play Trinity in the Junior B division grand final. The Intermediate A and Open A teams will be playing off for third place, while the Intermediate B and Open B teams are contending for premierships. The Athletics Eliminations were held during the week and the Squad have one final hit out this weekend before the AGSV Athletics Finals on Wednesday 11 September. With the Spring season coming to a close, attention shifts towards the upcoming 2019-20 Summer season. Training begins Tuesday 8 October, with the first round of AGSV matches taking place on Saturday 19 October.

Sport Report The semi-finals for the 2019 Water Polo season were held last Saturday, with Camberwell recording some mixed results. In the Junior’s competition, the Camberwell Crest team were able to come away convincing winners as they defeated Trinity 11-4 on the back of some great performances by Jackson Haintz (Year 7) and Lachlan Nguyen (Year 8). Unfortunately Camberwell Blue team were not as fortunate, as they went down to a very skilled Trinity line up. In the intermediates, Trinity were able to get the best of both the Intermediate A and B teams in two tightly contested matches. The Open B team continued their dominant win streak as they cruised past Whitefriars, setting them up for a Grand Final clash this weekend. The Open A team toughed out another extremely hard-fought game against Trinity, with the game in the balance for the majority of the match. However, the boys were unable to secure the win, as they forward look to this weekend where they will battle for the bronze medal. Over 60 Camberwell students participated in another great morning of athletics trials at Bill Sewart Athletics Track on Saturday. Lucas Waycott (Year 9) starred in the Under 15s as he won his race with a time of 12.3 seconds, while Will Stamper and Ming Zhou (both Year 8) both showed considerable improvements in their shot put and discus throws. Akalanka Gunawardana (Year 9) continued his impressive form in both track and field, running 12 seconds in the 100 metre while also recording 38.8 metres in the discus. Tom Bowers (Year 11) won his 800m race with a remarkable 2 minute run while Ollie Spalding (Year 11) was competitive in his sprints and triple jump events. Alex Wilson-Brown (Year 11) returned from injury as he won his 100m race with a time of 11.4 seconds as Tom Graves (Year 12) also posted a solid time in his 3000m run. This weekend marks the last chance for athletes to challenge for a spot in the team for the finals next Wednesday. Good luck to all those competing in this week’s round of sport. Sam Garrard, Captain of Sport Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Music September Music Concert As a music teacher, I dream of a world where the joy of music is as valued as it is at CGS, and this week in particular I feel that we as the musicians of CGS are fortunate to live in such a world. Every musician, whether soloist, new ensemble member, accompanist or conductor should be proud of the huge effort they put in to create their performances this week. Not only effort on the night, but in weekly rehearsals, lessons and private practice. What creates amazing music is not just talent, but continuous application and effort in learning one’s craft, and these mundane tasks are rarely applauded or witnessed. There is nothing that can bring our large community together like the power of music and singing in particular. Although it is sometimes challenging to keep weekly commitments (such as Senior Choir on Tuesday lunchtime!), it is the regularity with which our ensembles come together that gives the boys the warm camaraderie, confidence and skills to mount large scale performances such as Carmina Burana, well as gaining experience in how to work together successfully through challenges to create something special. I strongly encourage all boys to always sing and create music together – the benefits stretch well beyond music education and enjoyment into the areas of brain training and mental health benefits. For those students who are particularly keen, we have the Elva Allan Scholarship Recital next Thursday 12 September at 7.30pm. Tickets are free and the evening promises to be a stunning night of chamber music by a small group of the Schools’ hardest working musicians. All boys and parents are welcome.

Student Charity Concert at St Oswalds On Sunday 15 September at 2.30pm our VCE Performance students will be performing their VCE programs at St Oswalds Anglican Church, Glen Iris. Cellist Sebastian Csutoros, Baritone Louis Le, pianist Matthew Wu and Freddy Branson (guest performer) will present a delightful program of diverse works. This is an excellent platform for our students and is a wonderful way to raise money for local charities. See flyer attached here.
