Life Governors’ Dinner

Life Governors’ Dinner

At last Monday’s Life Governors’ Dinner, the School Council welcomed back our Life Governors, people who have contributed greatly to our School over many years, and we also congratulated and thanked four long serving staff members who have given 25 years of service: Mr Hamish Green (Head of Macneil, Commerce and Indonesian) Ms Min Zhang (Chinese), Mrs Marcelle Drummond (Music) and Mrs Kaye McDougal (PrePreparatory). It was wonderful to be able to reminisce about the careers of these colleagues over the past quarter of a century and to present them with tokens of the School’s gratitude.

To Kill a Mockingbird Congratulations to the whole cast and crew on last night’s outstanding opening night! A cast consisting of students from Camberwell Grammar and Canterbury Girls’ School presented a thought provoking and moving adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel. The performance of the entire class were flawless and it was hard to remember that these were Middle School students – and a Grade Two boy! Congratulations also to Ms Penelope Wood, for her direction, and to her team of designers and technicians who all complemented the wonderful sets and acting. Without the commitment and dedication of all the staff involved this play simply could not have happened. I encourage you to try to get to one of the remaining performances – it is a show well worth seeing!

Blokes’ Book Breakfast Our annual Blokes’ Book Breakfast will take place next Wednesday 21 August. Our guest this year is internationally acclaimed author, Michael Gerard Bauer, whose writing has received many awards in Australia and overseas and been widely translated. I encourage any Dads and their sons who are interested in books and the craft of writing to join us hearty breakfast and what promises to be a very interesting and entertaining presentation. Further information and booking details are in the attached flyer. Bookings close tonight.

September Concert Our music students have been busy rehearsing for the September Concert which will take place in the Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 4 September. The Concert will run over two parts: Part A (Junior School and Middle School) at 6.00pm, and Part B (Senior School and Whole School Choir) at 8.15pm. Tickets go on sale this evening at 7.30pm. Go to www.trybooking.com/BERWT to reserve your seats. Please note that due to high demand, there will be a maximum of 4 tickets per family. Adult and student meals are also available for purchase on the above Trybooking link if you would like to make use of this service. Dinner will be held in the break between Parts A and B.

Enrolments for 2020 Our School is currently in the very fortunate position of having a strong demand for places. We currently have long waiting lists for entry at all levels. Consequently, if parents are contemplating withdrawing their sons next year for any reason, please pass this information on to our Registrar, Mr Peter O’Connell. I do remind all parents that our policy is to ask families for one Term’s notice of any potential change in enrolment. In addition, if you have a younger son that you wish to enrol over the next few years please make sure you have let our Registrar’s Office know well in advance – there are currently waiting lists for Year 7 entry as far ahead as 2030.

Senior School House Chess The Senior School House Chess Competition was held last Friday. All players are commended on the spirit in which games were played on the day. Thank you to all those who assisted at the event. I was pleased to present the Shield to Niko Varrios (Year 12), Captain of Robinson at yesterday’s Assembly.

Middle School Parent Teacher Evening and Parent Education Many thanks to all the parents who were able to make it to the Information Evening last Tuesday night. This was a wonderful opportunity to connect with those who care most about your son’s learning and I hope the brief time was productive and positive. If you have additional feedback, please make contact with me. Last week’s Parent Education Seminar led by Professor Michael Gordon on the subject Building Resilient Teenagers was also a great success with over 100 parents in attendance. Thanks to all who attended.

Projec10 Projec10 is a fantastic opportunity for our boys to exercise their entrepreneurial talents together with girls from Fintona and Camberwell Girls Grammar School. Boys are reminded to complete the form posted to Schoology to help coordinate all of the activities. We will be hosting a Fête at lunch on Friday 13 September.

Athletics Congratulations to all our boys who braved the arctic conditions last Saturday. Twenty seven Middle School boys took part and hopefully tomorrow we will have even more. Highlights include: • Harry Clarke ran 13.15 seconds in the 100m • Lachlan Young ran 2 min 37 seconds in the 800m • Liam McCarthy 9.05m in the Shot and 21.96m in the Discus • William Allsop took part in 5 events (including the 3000 metres) Best of luck to our athletes chasing their personal bests out at the track tomorrow at Mentone Dolomore Reserve. The schedule of events for this weekend can be found here. Here is also a list of FAQs.

Cross Country Many thanks to Mr Charlie Lockwood and helpers for their organisation yesterday. The boys approached the day in good spirits. Full results will be published early next week.

Mobile Phones A reminder about our mobile phone policy in the Middle School. Unless explicitly instructed, mobile phones need to be stored in boy’s lockers during the day. This includes anytime whilst the boys are on School grounds. We do try our best to work with our students regarding School policies and appreciate the respect that the vast majority show. Evidence raised during Wednesday night’s Parent Education Seminar on Building Resilient Teenagers reinforced the importance of this policy, with Professor Gordon referencing research that strongly links too much screen time with anxiety and other mental health concerns.

Debating The Year 8 Middle School Debating Competition at CGS continues to be an exciting and popular part of the curriculum. The Inter-Form Competition continues next week on the topic ‘Junk Food Should be Banned from School’. The three Inter-Form debates have been completed, with the two best classes going through to the Grand Final on Open Day. The DAV Inter-School competition kicked off on Wednesday night with an information and training evening. Approximately 60 CGS boys from Year 7 and 8 will take part this year, with competition events starting next Wednesday. All parents are encouraged to attend.

Sport

Good luck to the two U15 and U17 Baseball teams in their semi-finals this weekend. The Fencing squad have their final event on Sunday, while the Snowsports squad head off to Mt Buller for the Victorian Interschools Championships. There is still time to join the Athletics team. We have outstanding coaches, led by former Olympian Craig Mottram, that will help to develop running technique, speed and cardiovascular endurance, as well as the more specific events. It is a fantastic way to keep active and prepare for the upcoming Summer season. Invitations have been advertised for end of season presentation nights for various sports. Some fascinating guest speakers have been organised, so it would be great to see as many students and families there as possible to celebrate the season. If you have any concerns or questions regarding Sport, contact the staff member in charge of your son’s team or contact the Director of Sport at dos@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report In the first round of the new Spring Sports season, the Camberwell Water Polo squad started their season strongly. The Intermediate B team had a good win over Whitefriars (9-4) thanks to brilliant attacking from James Growse (Year 10). The Intermediate A team was not as fortunate as they found themselves facing a very capable and competent Trinity lineup. However, gallant efforts from Lachlan Ross (Year 9) and Cody Greenwood (Year 9) ensured that the margin of the game was not blown out of proportion, as the team fought hard to eventually go down by only 3 goals. The Open B match was highlighted by a dazzling performance from Jake Oh (Year 12) who scored 6 of the team’s 7 goals in their tied encounter with Marcellin. The Open A team enjoyed a comfortable 5-1 victory against last year’s premiers, Trinity. Jasper Guthrie’s (Year 12) brilliance in goals and strong swimming from Greg Kerdemelidis (Year) and Jasper Fodor (Year 11) were highlights. In less than ideal conditions, 40 Camberwell students braved the weather at Doncaster Athletics track on Saturday morning for the first AGSV Athletics Trials. Despite a number of events called off due to rain, Camberwell still had a strong representation in all events. In the Under 15s, Benny Grayson (Year 9) recorded some impressive early times as he ran just over 25 seconds in the 200m, while Hayden Newman (Year 9) eased his way into the season with some promising middle-distance runs. In the U16s, Jordan Liang (Year 10) continued his fine form from last year with a time of 12.06s in the 100m sprint and 24.02s in the 200m. Connor Laird (Year 9) starred in his first Camberwell athletics event as he recorded a distance of 12.24m in the Shot Put, whilst Hamish Wild (Year 11) also showed encouraging signs as he threw just under 30 metres in the discus. The squad will now travel to Mentone this Saturday to build on their impressive start to the season.

Music Victorian Schools Music Festival On Wednesday 14 August members of the CGS Big Band attended the Victorian Schools Music Festival held at the Hawthorn Arts Centre. This is the first time an ensemble from Camberwell Grammar School has attended the Festival, which provides an important performance platform for students to work towards. The Festival offers students an opportunity to work with leading educators from Australia and overseas and this year the ensemble worked with world renowned Grammy Award winning trumpeter Willie Murillo. A particularly rewarding part of the festival is the chance to see and hear other schools perform and for the boys to engage in the wider music community. The band performed two works by Rob Vuono Jr, Welcome to the Majors and What’s Your Hurry and received very positive feedback from the adjudicators in what was their first performance as an ensemble. For their efforts on the day and the hard work in rehearsals, the CGS Big Band were awarded a Gold Shield. The boys should be congratulated on their performance and for embracing the tutorials and improvisation workshop on the day. I would like to acknowledge the hard work and support from the Instrumental Music Staff in preparing their students for this performance and to Mr Brennan Hamilton-Smith, Mr Jamie McGee, Mr Evan Prichard and Ms Linda Wostry for their work with the boys in rehearsals. Chris Day, Head of Brass Ben Bishop, Director of Music

Piano Masterclass - Kenny Broburg On Tuesday 20 August, Kenny Broburg will come to Camberwell Grammar School to give a Masterclass. Kenny is one of the finest young pianists of our time and we are thrilled that he is coming to our School. Everyone from the CGS community is welcome to attend this Masterclass. If your son studies outside the School, please invite his teacher to attend this masterclass as I am sure that it will be of great interest. The Masterclass run will run from 3.30pm to 5.30pm in the Mallinson Music School. Four CGS students will be playing to Mr Broburg. If you or your son cannot make it at 3.30pm he can come later. If he is unable to stay until 5.30pm, he can leave quietly at an appropriate pause. Please get in touch with me if you would like to know more, and click here to see an example of Kenny Broburg’s work. Rachel Atkinson, Head of Music Academy Page 4

Christmas Puddings - We Need Your Help! Mixing Days The Christmas Pudding preparation has well and truly begun. A big thank you to all who have helped chop, zest and weigh so far. Our mixing and cooking days are now in sight! This part of the process requires ‘many hands to make light work’ and to make it easy the two-hour Friday morning mixing sessions have been divided into year levels. Absolutely no baking skills are required, and even if you can only spare an hour it is very much appreciated. If you cannot make your year levels allocated day, feel free to jump into one of the others, everyone is welcome to any or all sessions! These sessions are a great opportunity to meet and chat with other parents. There has been a lot of laughs and stories shared already! If you have time stay after the preparation is done for a cuppa and some morning tea. Please visit www.volunteersignup.org/9EPC7 to let us know that you would like to join in and be part of this fantastic CGS tradition which raises significant funds for the School and spreads a bit of cheer through our community every Christmas. Cooking Days The Auxiliary are also looking for volunteers to help with the pudding cooking which we do over the weekend following each mixing day using the CGS Camberwell Room Kitchen ovens. It only takes fifteen minutes of your time to unload a batch and load in the next and if we have plenty of helpers it lightens our load. Detailed instructions and a demonstration will be given. For any queries please contact thecgsauxiliary@gmail.com. Pudding Orders Please visit www.trybooking.com.com/BBAGF to place your order or fill in the order form here and return the Development Office. Puddings can be collected from as early as mixing day two, Friday 9 August in the Camberwell Room of the Sports Centre (Level 3).
