TUESDAY 5 NOVEMBER Melbourne Cup Public Holiday

Grandparents’ Day It was a pleasure to welcome over 600 Grandparents, Great Grandparents and family friends of boys from all levels to our School last Tuesday. They enjoyed a morning tea in the Performing Arts Centre, followed by a Concert involving musicians from all sections of the School. After the Concert our students were excited to then be able to show ‘their’ School to their grandparents and family. I thank and appreciate all those staff, students and parents who work to make the day a great success, and in particular, Mr Ken Schwab, Mr Ryan Whitehead and the Development Office staff, and the members of the CGS Auxiliary for their assistance. I know that the students who had the opportunity to show their Grandparents around the School were very proud to do so and I hope that the Grandparents enjoyed their day.

Year 12 Examinations Year 12 Examinations began this week with English, EAL, English Language, Biology and Further Mathematics. Many of our Year 12 students have been visiting the School over the last few days to meet with teachers and to receive final advice and last-minute tips. We have all been impressed by the preparation of this year’s Senior class and are confident that they will do their best over this examination period. We offer them our full support and we look forward to celebrating their results with them on Thursday 12 December 2019.

End of Year Arrangements Examination dates and end of year arrangements for students in Years 9 to 11 can be found on the School Portal under “Curriculum”. Please note that throughout the examination period students are to be in full school uniform.

Year 8 into Year 9 Parents’ Information Evening On Wednesday, 6 November from 7.30pm, in the Auditorium of the Performing Arts Centre, we will be holding an information session for the parents of current Year 8 students who are moving from Middle School to Senior School next year. Students are not required to attend this Information Evening. As part of the evening, we will provide an opportunity for you to meet with your son’s Head of House who will be one of the key Pastoral Care providers during his Senior School years. You will also receive information pertaining to the upcoming Year 8 Camp and have the opportunity to ask questions of any of the staff members during the presentation or after.

Earlier this month the State Secondary Schools’ Chess Championships were held and CGS was adjudged 3rd place after 8 rounds of competition. With 21 teams competing from schools from all over Victoria, this result is certainly one which builds for the future with Lachlan Lee (Year 5) and Edward Oliver (Year 6) joining the team and performing very well. Congratulations to the Camberwell Grammar School performers: Oliver Papillo (Captain), Kayson Wang (Year 9), (also place 3rd overall in the individual competition), Ken Weeraratne (Year 10), Lachlan Lee, and Kerry Sun (Year 9). Other strong contributors to our success were: Eugene Goh (Year 9), Ilian Aendenroomer (Year 10), Cedric Fun (Year 9), Griffen Adams (Year 12), Ishaan Nandurkar (Year 9), William Wu (Year 9), Edward Oliver (Year 6), and Minh Tran (Year 7).

The John Mallinson Organ Scholarship The John Mallinson Organ Scholarship was established in 2011 to encourage students to learn the organ. It is named after the founder of the scholarship, Mr John Mallinson, who was Director of Music from 1964 until 1987. It was my pleasure to announce at yesterday’s Assembly that the recipient of the 2020 scholarship is Darby Lee (Year 9). He is a worthy winner of the scholarship and we congratulate him.

Debating The Grand Final of the DAV Schools Competition was held last week. The CGS team consisting of Year 11 students Philip Alex, Tory Crosgrove, Jamie Garnham, Rohan Hodges and Thomas Ng were runners up in the B Grade competition. The British Parliamentary Debating Grand Final was also held last week. Tory Crosgrove and Rohan Hodges competed well and were runners up in the final. Congratulations to all debaters on a successful season.

Australian Scout Medallion I was pleased to receive notification that three Year 9 students Faisal Al-Sabbagh, William Phillips and Kevin Wang have earned the Australian Scout Medallion, which is a major milestone in a youth member’s Scouting journey. To attain the top award in each of the five Sections in Scouting reflects initiative in tackling this challenge, sustained effort over many months and years, plus self-discipline, teamwork and leadership. Congratulations to Faisal, William and Kevin on this achievement. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Middle School Year 8 Social Last Friday the Year 8 boys hosted approximately 200 girls from Fintona, PLC and CGGS. It was a fantastic night which raised over $4,000 for the Maddie Riewoldt Foundation. Connor Inston (Year 8) invited the Foundation’s CEO Nicky Long to Assembly where she talked to us about the amazing work that the charity performs. Many thanks to Mr Joe Tierney and his organising committee who did a marvellous job organising such a great night.

Koala Kids Walk/Run Wednesday’s stunning weather met our very enthusiastic Middle School runners and walkers, who are in the process of raising valuable funds for KOALA Kids. There were several notable runners who clocked up over 10 laps. Please note that all money raised needs to be handed in by next Wednesday 6 November.

Central Australia Tour Expression of Interest (EOI) forms for the Central Australia Tour were emailed out to all Year 7 and Year 8 parents this week. EOI forms are to be completed by Wednesday 6 November ahead of the Information Evening on Tuesday 12 November. The Tour will run from Sunday 13 to Sunday 20 September 2020 (during the School Holiday period).

Golf Award Congratulations to Callum Yates (Year 7) who received the award for the 2019 Torquay Junior Golfer of the Year. Callum works exceptionally hard in the classroom and on the golf course and we are very proud of the growth that he has shown in all his endeavours. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School Summer Uniform A reminder that after the Melbourne Cup weekend all boys must be in summer attire. Hats must be worn at recess and lunch time. Please remember - no hat no play.

Junior School Music Congratulations to the Junior School Choir for their musical performance at the Grandparents’ Day Concert this week. Beautiful solo voices to begin the song Just One Person, the lyrical song The Dream Keeper and a rousing rendition in parts of Drunken Sailor really captivated the large audience and our Grandparents loved our singing. The Term 4 Soiree for soloists will be held on Thursday 14 November in Music and Movement Centre. • 6.00pm (PrePrep to Year 3) • 7.00pm (Year 4 and Year 5) All participating students should have already submitted the details of their pieces. The sign-up form is available through the Music tab of your class School Portal. Hopefully all details have been returned to Mrs Thomas immediately as today is the closing date. If an accompanist is required, please ensure a copy of the accompaniment music for rehearsal here at School was attached. Page 2

Junior Sports Congratulations to Max McCool (Year 5) for his efforts in the State Athletics event last week. On a blisteringly hot day, Max was one of only three boys to compete in both the 100m and 200m final. He finished 7th in both events, setting a PB in the 100m in a field of giant Victorian sprinters! His time of 13.40 also broke our existing School record. An amazing achievement, well done Max!

AGSV Athletics Carnival On Thursday 7 November, our Junior School Athletics squad will compete in the AGSV Athletics Carnival at Bill Sewart Athletics Track in Burwood East. Selected boys must please return their permission slips by today. The bus will depart at 9.00am sharp, and should arrive back at School by 3.00pm.

Sport

With no matches due to the Melbourne Cup long weekend, students are encouraged to participate in some form of physical activity during that time. Sport training resumes as normal from Wednesday 6 November, in preparation for the next round of AGSV Sport on Saturday 9 November. Students are expected to train as normal until the last day of Summer Sport training for the year on Friday 15 November. Some sports, such as Cycling, Kayaking and Triathlon, will continue to train until their final competition. As Tom Bowers (Year 11) will elaborate on in his report below, the Victorian All Schools Athletics Championships began last weekend and continue this weekend. He, himself, competed in the Under 18 1500m. He finished 4th in a time of 4 minutes and 13 seconds, missing out on a medal by two-hundredths of a second. Tom has had an exceptional year in middle and long distance running and has represented the School admirably. Congratulations to Ryder Cheesman (Year 7) who was named the City of Whitehorse Junior Sportsperson of the Year last week for his achievements in basketball, football and swimming. The award was presented by the Mayor at the Council’s Annual Sports award presentation evening. This is outstanding recognition for a talented sportsman to look out for at Camberwell Grammar. A reminder that sessions with Craig Mottram, former Olympian and Commonwealth Games athlete, continue throughout Term 4 on Wednesday mornings from 6.45am on the Keith Anderson Oval (KAO). It is a fantastic opportunity to develop aerobic fitness, resilience, mobility and core training, as well as strength and conditioning. All students are encouraged to attend. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Sport can be directed to me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report The First V Basketball hosted an undefeated Mentone last Friday. Returning from a shaky start to the season against Trinity, the afternoon was kicked off by the CGS drumline. The match began with equal intensity, with Sam Rendell (Year 10) nailing a series of deep shots. Taran Laurence (Year 11) continued to star again, showing great poise and leading a fluid offence as the team managed to hold off a strong opposition for much of the match. Both sides contested closely in front of a packed crowd, led by consistent efforts from Matthew Power and Flynn Chable (Year 10). Control was brought back by Camberwell in the dying seconds of the match, with a clutch three-pointer from Sam Veitch (Year 9) to level the score. Unfortunately, the game was stolen back by Mentone with seconds to spare, as Camberwell lost 52 – 54. With Melbourne’s weather threatening to derail the Firsts Tennis match last Saturday against Mentone, the boys started strongly in the first round of doubles matches, with the number 1 pairing of Isaac Hui (Year 10) and Alex Wilson Brown (Year 11) dominating at the net to establish an early lead. Matthew Lim and David Maes (Year 11) improved upon the previous week, and, with their booming serves, recorded a sound win. Andy Lee (Year 9) and Lachlan O’Neill (Year 8) proved to be a lively combination, taking to the net at every opportunity, finishing their points decisively. A commanding 7-1 lead was established with all pairs winning their second round of doubles as they headed into the singles matches. With rain looming, quick matches were required to ensure a Camberwell victory. Lachlan defeated his opponent convincingly, which left Andy to serve out his match for a Camberwell win. Isaac Hui (Year 10) rounded out a good day with a win in the singles. He and Matthieu Gibert (Year 8) remain undefeated as the Number 2 and Number 1 players, respectively. Camberwell eventually won 12 sets to 4 (112 games to 71). Looking to bounce back from a disappointing Round 1 outing against Trinity, the First XI Cricket faced Mentone with Captain, Ned Bennett (Year 11), winning the toss and electing to bat first. Camberwell got off to a meagre start after losing openers, Matthew Lewison and Joshua Pollocks (Year 11) with the score 2/38. This brought Lachlan Ross (Year 9) to the crease to join Jordan McCleery (Year 10). The pair consolidated the innings and put on a fantastic partnership of 128, hitting Mentone bowlers to all parts of the ground. Jordan was dismissed for a chanceless innings of 86 runs, adding to his Round 1 total of 57. Page 3

This triggered a collapse in composure from the Camberwell side with wickets falling in quick succession as the team tried to up the run rate in the late overs of the innings. Camberwell finished with 9/208 in their 50 overs; a more than competitive total. The afternoon session was interrupted with numerous showers, with players coming on and off the ground during these delays. Unfortunately, this meant a wet ball and sub-par conditions, making hard work for the bowlers. Camberwell toiled hard in the difficult conditions; however, only managed to take 4 wickets as Mentone passed Camberwell’s total in the 33rd over. Connor Laird (Year 9), James Harker (Year 10), Lewis Winkett and Ned Bennett (Year 11) were the wicket takers with one apiece. A number of CGS students competed in Week 1 of the Victorian All Schools Athletics Championships over the weekend at Doncaster, with an impressive array of performances across all year levels. Zac Matters (Year 7) won a bronze medal in the Under 14 3000m Walk in a time of 16 minutes 25 seconds. Harrison Car and Daniel Chen (both Year 7) competed in the Under 14 1500m, with Harrison finishing 8th (4:53) and Daniel 23rd (5:19). Sebastian Beck (Year 8) continued to improve, breaking his own School Record in the Under 15 100m heats in a time of 11.65 seconds. Unfortunately, Sebastian was disqualified in the final for a false start. Akalanka Gunawardana (Year 9) finished 4th in the Under 16 Discus, throwing a personal best distance of 39.93 metres. Akalanka also finished 10th in the Triple Jump with a distance of 10.89 metres. Jordan Liang (Year 10) put in an impressive performance in the Under 17 100m, finishing 4th in the final with a time of 11.49 seconds, while Connor Assauw (Year 10) competed in the Under 17 High Jump, finishing 7th with a height of 1.75 metres. Good luck to all those competing over the Cup Weekend. Tom Bowers, Captain of Games (2020) Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Accessing VCE Results VCE study scores, ATAR and VTAC Scaled Study Scores will be available to students through the Results and ATAR website and the Results and ATAR app in December. Students will receive a statement of VCE study scores from the VCAA, and those who applied for courses through VTAC this year and have paid their VTAC processing fees will be sent an ATAR statement in the mail. Registrations are already open. To register, students need their VCAA student number and will be requested to choose a secure password. VTAC have created a video on accessing VCE Results and ATAR, which you can watch on their YouTube channel here.

Pathway Programs to University in 2020 There are many ways to get to the same destination, and that applies to university too. Sometimes students do not quite meet the entry criteria - maybe their ATAR was not high enough, or they did not attain the minimum study score in a prerequisite subject. The encouraging thing is that many universities have recommended pathway courses to their degrees. Listed below are some of the more popular ones. Deakin College provides a direct pathway to Deakin University, providing students with the experience that supports successful transition to further studies. Diploma programs in Business, Commerce, Communication, Construction Management, Design, Engineering, Film, Television & Animation, Health Sciences, Information Technology and Science can lead into second year of a degree at Deakin University. Find out more at Deakin College. UniLink diplomas are an option for students who miss direct entry to a degree at Swinburne University, or who would benefit from a more supportive style of learning. They are equivalent to the first year of university and can provide a pathway to second year of a related Swinburne degree. UniLink diplomas are available in the following areas: • Arts & Communication • Business • Design • Engineering • Health Science • Information Technology • Science For more information about the range of UniLink courses on offer, visit UniLink.

Monash University DoTS The one-year full-time Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS) particularly suits students requiring additional learning support in their first year; students learn to write essays, undertake research, solve problems, think critically, develop projects and communicate their ideas more effectively. The DoTS is offered at the Peninsula campus and enables successful students to transition into second year of the following Monash University degrees: Business, Education or Nursing. Visit DoTS to find out more.
