Nouns: Singular and Plural
Nouns are naming words. A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, or things. For example: Anu, cat, ice cream. Singular noun refers to one. For example - Cat, Dog, Doll. Plural noun refers to more than one. For example - Cats, Dogs, Dolls. Some rules for forming plural nouns1.
Generally we add -s after the noun to make plural. For example: Car - Cars, Girl - Girls.
2.
Nouns with 'hissing' sounds (-sh, -ch,-x,-s) at the end, the plural is formed by adding –es. For example: Bush-Bushes, Class-Classes, Fox-foxes, Branch-Branches.
3.
Nouns ending with a consonant + y, the plural is formed by changing y into ies. For example: Baby-Babies, City-Cities.
4.
Nouns ending with a vowel + y, the plural is formed by adding-s. For example: Boy-Boys, Key-Keys.
5.
Nouns ending with -f, -fe, the plural is formed by changing -f, -fe into -ves. For example: Knife-knives, Thief-Thieves
6.
A few nouns don't follow any rules. For example: Child-Children, Mouse-Mice.

One summer afternoon, Raju thought he would sit in his garden and stitch hats there. As his wife had gone to the Tailors' Wives Club that afternoon, Raju locked the house. He kept the bunch of keys in his pocket and went to the garden with all his half-stitched hats and caps. Soon the heat made him tired and he fell asleep. Chatter....chatter.... Raju got up with a sudden start. 'Where are the hats and caps?' Raju looked around and thought. Chatter...chatter... ‘Where is that noise coming from?’ Raju wondered. He looked up at the leaves and the branches of the tree under which he sat. Some monkeys were chattering up there. Each monkey had a hat or a cap on its head!

Nouns: Gender
People and animals can be divided into two groups: females and males.
Male nouns are called the masculine gender. For example: Man, Boy, Father, King.
Female nouns are called the feminine gender. For example: Woman, Girl, Mother, Queen.
Nouns those used for both male and female are called the common gender. For example: Student, Friend, Teacher, Cousin, Neighbour.
Non-living things are neither male nor female. They are called the neuter gender. For example: Clock, Book, Pen, Table, Stone.

Unit-3 Kinds of Nouns
Nouns which name peoples, places and things generally are called Common Nouns. For example: Book. Street, Girl. Nouns which give exact names are called Proper Nouns. For example: Dhaka, Mitu, China, Great Wall. Some nouns tell us who owns what. For example: Mitu’s book- the hook belongs to Mitu. The girl's dress- the dress belongs to the girl. Who owns what can be said in another way. For example: The book of Mitu- Mitu's book. The dress of the girl- The girl’s dress The colour of the umbrella- The umbrella's colour We can say who owns what in two ways: a) By adding ‘s: The boy's bicycle b) By adding of: The bicycle of the boy

Unit-10 Using A, An, and The •
A is used before a consonant sound. For example: a king, a computer, a rose.

An is used before a vowel sound: For example: an apple, an elephant, an orchard.

The is used when a word has been mentioned before.

Paragraph My Pet Animal My pet animal is cat. I call it Mini. It is white in colour and beautiful to look at. Its whole body is covered with soft fur. It has a long tail and round head. Its eyes and ears are very sharp. Its four legs have claws by which it can easily kill the rats. I like Mini very much for its good nature. When I call it Mini she comes to me mewing. I sleep with her. I also play with her. I give her fish, meat, milk and rice to eat. She is fond of milk but she does not steal it. So, every member of our house loves Mini dearly.
The Water Lily The Water Lily is the national flower of Bangladesh. It grows in water. Bangladesh is a land of rivers and the Water Lily is found almost in every water body in the country. It grows in Rainy Season. The leaves of Water lily are like heart-shaped and float on water surface. The young leaves and flower buds are eaten as vegetables. There are different colours of Water Lily- white, yellow, pink, red, purple and blue. In Bangladesh there are two colours of Water Lily – Pink and white. The white Water lily is the national flower of Bangladesh.
My Hobby My favourite hobby is collecting stamps. I have a lovely album in which I fix the stamps. I have separate pages for each country in my stamp album. I also have separate pages for stamps on birds, animals, great leaders, historical movements, etc. I have about 4000 stamps in all. My friends and relatives help me to collect stamps from all over the world. I have managed to collect some very rare and old stamps. My hobby fills my free hours with interest and keeps my mind well. I hope someday I will have a rare stamp collection.
