Editor’s Letter THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT SUMMER THAT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER. It’s that undeniable desire to kick back with family and friends and enjoy the little things that get lost in the shuffle—or in some cases, buried under the snow—the rest of the year. Being a family-owned business, Cambria understands just how big those little things really are and the importance of keeping them at the forefront of your life. With this issue, we celebrate the basics and get down to the simpler things. Although, in true Cambria form, simpler need not mean sans style or extremely good taste! Indeed, good taste abounds in our scrumptious takes on the classic burger and the perfect summertime beer. Plenty of style can be found in our picks for livening up the shenanigans in the backyard this summer with some new takes on favorite outdoor games. Our cover story subject is no stranger to family. Candace Cameron Bure grew up on set of ABC’s Full House as one of America’s most beloved TV families and now has a full house of her own, with husband Val and their three children. With a successful book and website as well as a devoted fan base, Candace is happy to play supportive partner in her family’s latest venture, Bure Family Wines. Although husband Val calls the shots on the winemaking, Candace and their design team were the decision makers when it came to choosing the Cambria colors to best complement the renovation of their Napa home that houses the offices and tasting room for the label. Her choice was all about beauty and durability—on a tasting table serving deep red wines, the latter is a must. In contrast to the bustling Bure household, we highlight a prominent Minnesota couple, who instead of downsizing when the kids left the nest, created a fantastic space for extended family. VARY THE SCALE | Strong patterns do go together, just make sure they’re different in scale. Try one small pattern in a monotone, then go much larger in size with more color for another pattern. UNIFY WITH COLOR | Find a color you love. Magazines can help you see what’s in style. ou don’t need to be a chef or own a restaurant to enjoy the benefits of a pro-style kitchen. The simple lines and classic materials that are the hallmark of industrial design have taken hold in the cook space because they look great and work hard. Fans of smart design and authentic good looks will find something for almost every type of kitchen, from urban loft to country retreat.

PRO-STYLE KITCHENS DOUBLE UP APPLIANCES TO SUPPLEMENT THE HEAVYLIFTERS LIKE THE STOVE FOR LARGE GATHERINGS.

The workhorses of your kitchen, appliances set the industrial tone. The centerpiece is the range with brawny grates on its gas cooktop. If you have the room, two ovens—one convection and one microwave—and a warming drawer increase cooking capacity. Whether you pair the range with a bold stainless-steel hood or a custom design to match the cabinets is up to you, but be sure it’s sized correctly; a pro-style cooktop needs a vent with greater power to whisk away heat and vapors than a conventional model. As for cooling, professional-grade refrigerators take more floor space than standard fridges, draw more power, plus glass doors are high-upkeep. Industrially inspired kitchens should provide lots of counter space to accommodate multiple chefs. Choose surfaces that can handle spills and heat, as well as the occasional blow from a knife. CANDACE CAMERON BURE LITERALLY GREW UP IN FRONT OF A NATIONAL TV AUDIENCE.

From 1987 to 1995, she played adorable big sister D.J. Tanner on the iconic ABC family comedy, Full House. With her big hair, funky sweaters, and rosy cheeks, she winningly portrayed the trials of adolescence for all of America to see over eight seasons of the popular TV show, winning many accolades in the course of the show’s run, including Favorite Television Actress at the Kids’ Choice Awards. Today, Cameron is all grown up and enjoying ongoing roles—wife, mother and, in conjunction with her husband, wine entrepreneur. Candace met NHL hockey star Valeri Bure in 1995, and they married in 1996. At that point, she decided to take some time off to be a full-time wife, joining Val on the road while he was playing. They subsequently started a family, and the couple is now the proud parents of three children, Natasha, 13, Lev, 12, and Maksim, 10. When Val retired in 2005, after playing on two Olympic teams and for ten seasons in the NHL, he was ready for a second career. Having become passionate about wine during his hockey days, he dreamed of creating his own wine label. Candace was on board immediately. “I developed a love of wine because of Val,” she says. Since they both also loved Napa Valley, they decided to establish their wine business there. “It’s so beautiful and serene in Napa,” says Candace. “We just knew it was the perfect place for us.” Today, Bure Family Wines, based in the serene town of St. Helena, is thriving, and although the couple lives full-time in Los Angeles, they have a second home in Napa Valley. “Val is up there every other week,” says Candace. While she and the kids love the time they spend there as a family, for Candace it’s a juggling act with her active brood and career, “I don’t go as often because I’m at home with the kids while they’re at school, or I’m working.”

A FULL LIFE Candace started acting in commercials when she was five, so it’s not surprising that she jumped back into work once the children began to grow up. For the last three years, she’s had a featured role as Summer Van Horne in

Make It or Break It, a drama about the world of competitive teenage gymnastics on the ABC Family channel. Also important to Candace is her Christian faith; her book, Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness, a New York Times bestseller, was published in 2011. In it, she revealed her struggles with weight control and her faith-based success in dealing with it. Charity work is also important to her—she volunteers with several organizations, among them the Children’s Hunger Fund and the National House of Hope, which concentrates on group homes for troubled teenagers. With this kind of schedule, Candace, like most modern women, has learned to prioritize. “I just do it day by day,” she admits. “It’s a challenge. I don’t think you can really balance it all.” She says that if she’s starting to work a little too much, “Val will let me know, and I do the same with him.”

HOME AWAY FROM HOME But the Bure family always finds time to visit Napa during the summer. “It’s all about relaxing,” says Candace. “St. Helena is such a small town, I feel really safe and comfortable there with my kids. It’s such a different lifestyle from L.A. The kids can just be kids—go play outside, in the fields—and do it by themselves, which gives them some independence.” When the couple first moved to Napa, they bought a “rancher,” which they have been renovating with the assistance of designers Michael Roché and Jackson Butler of 38 Spatial, a design firm based in St. Helena. Roché has been working with the Bures to design a variety of Cambria installations in the house. “The house is very clean and contemporary in design,” Roché explains, “and Cambria, with its dynamic offering of designs, allows us to add another layer of texture.”

“WE’VE NAMED ONE WINE MALENA, WHICH IS A COMBINATION OF THE FIRST TWO INITIALS OF OUR THREE KIDS (MAKS, LEV AND NATASHA), AND THEY’RE VERY PROUD OF THAT.” —VAL BURE Working from a combination of five designs, mostly earth tones (Clyde, Greystone, and Sussex from the Cambria Desert Collection and Cardigan Red and Carlisle Gray from the Classic Collection), the design team is fashioning several artful pieces for the house’s main living spaces that emphasize some of Cambria’s dramatic designs. Most notable is a “stone painting” in a mosaic pattern, which will “float” on the dining room wall. “It’s going to be phenomenal,” raves Val. “I think it will be the focal piece of the house.” This palette of colors will continue in a wine bar, linking the kitchen and dining room, and a dramatic eight-foot-tall surround for the fireplace in Cambria’s Carlisle Gray. “Cambria has a large selection of designs,” Roché points out, “which allowed us to easily find shades

that would complement the architecture.” Next up in the renovation: converting the existing garage space into a winery office and public wine tasting area. And because Cambria is hygienic, nonabsorbent, and stain resistant, it offers a great low-maintenance solution for countertops in the tasting room, while its beautiful surface makes a stunning design statement.

Sourced from some of California’s finest grapes, grown from local vines, each vintage is individually crafted by Luc Morlet, a fourth-generation winemaker from France, who personally oversees every batch. The offering includes three red wines, all cabernet sauvignons, named Majesty, Thirteen and Duration, and two white wines, a sauvignon blanc called Nuit Blanche, and a chardonnay blend, Malena.

HERITAGE AND A FUTURE Much like with Cambria, the Bures use as a symbol for their business, a family crest, which Val adapted from a family seal that goes back several generations to his great grandfather, who was a watchmaker for the Russian czars. This devotion to heritage is one of the many qualities that keeps not just the business, but the family grounded. “Family is the number-one priority,” Candace says. And this family is looking forward to a long and fruitful run as vintners. They’re also thinking about the next generation. “Val wants to teach the children about winemaking,” Candace says. “And he hopes that one day maybe one of the boys or Natasha would want to follow in his footsteps and take over the business.” We hope so, too.

When you’re drinking wine, hold the glass on the stem, counsels Val. Otherwise, if you hold onto the upper part or the bowl, the heat from your hand will warm it up, affecting its taste and nose.

If you don’t have a wine cellar to store your wine, a dark, cool place will do just fine. The optimum temperature for aging wines should be 57 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re off a bit, don’t worry—the wine will be okay, it simply won’t age quite as well.

any couples, when their children are grown, sell the place where they raised their family, and downsize to a smaller dwelling. But when Becky and Bob Pohlad’s three sons left home, the Pohlads decided to stay put and reconfigure their house in Edina, Minnesota, for the next stage of their lives. “We’re in a wonderful neighborhood, and we didn’t want to change that,” explains Becky. Collaborating with prominent national designer, Billy Beson, and Jensen Homes, their contractor, Becky and Bob decided to renovate rather than move. But instead of redoing the rooms to feel smaller and more intimate, now that it was just the two of them, Becky decided to create larger, more open spaces to comfortably accommodate ongoing visits from their expanding family. “We turned what had been the living room into a spacious dining room that can seat as many as 16,” says Becky. “Then we took down walls to create a more open space that flows into the family room and another eating area, giving us a lot of flexibility.” And for those times when it’s just Becky and Bob, there’s a cozy breakfast room with a fireplace off the kitchen, perfect for a quiet meal for two. But like so many empty nesters, the Pohlads appreciate being able to host family events, and now can do so comfortably thanks to the easy flow from room to room. And that’s important because even though the Pohlads’ sons may not live at home anymore, with their wives and children as well as Becky and Bob’s own siblings and

their families, there’s always a crowd for barbecues, holidays, and impromptu gettogethers. “It’s a lot of fun when we can all be together,” she says. The extended Pohlad family, which includes Bob’s two brothers, Jim and Bill, has played a quietly integral part of Minneapolis life for decades, in part because of the wide-ranging business portfolio of the family patriarch, Carl, a successful entrepreneur. Through hard work, the family’s ventures have now grown to include real estate, financial, technology, retail, and entertainment businesses. But for most locals, the Pohlads are best known as the beloved longtime owners of the local baseball team, the Minnesota Twins. In addition, the family also contributes to a wide array of charitable endeavors all around the Twin Cities through the Pohlad Family Foundation (www. pohladfoundation.org), which was created nearly 20 years ago by Bob’s parents, Carl and Eloise. Humble as the family continues to be, the upper Midwest is ever thankful for their behind-the-scenes efforts. Nearly two dozen local organizations, from youth counseling centers to low-income housing advocacy programs to community centers, benefit from the family’s generosity. A KITCHEN TRANSFORMED

Since Becky loves to cook, and she and Bob both enjoy entertaining at home, which they do frequently, it was natural that the kitchen would be an important part of the renovation. Becky and Beson decided to make the kitchen more modern and airy, to flow naturally with the look of the rest of the first floor.

Becky knew this was an opportunity to scale back on upkeep, but she still wanted to maintain her strong sense of style. So she and Billy conferred closely on materials, picking only surfaces that look great and are still easy to care for. For the counters, which are used daily, the Pohlads had initially settled on limestone and Calacatta marble counters, but quickly discovered how easily they stain. “You could see the soiling and ring marks on our counters left from glasses; someone squeezed a lemon and that left a stain, too. The installer tried different buffing and sealing techniques, but it just didn’t work for us,” says Becky. A serendipitous trip to a Twins game sparked the idea for a solution: Cambria. That’s when the Pohlads noticed how beautiful the Cambria looked in Target Field’s new Cambria Design Center, which sees constant use from entertaining. After sharing her epiphany with trusted designer Beson, Becky says the pair came to a decision. “We decided to have the limestone and marble ripped out and replaced with Cambria. I love it. I would put it in any home,” she recalls. “Cambria is easy to clean, holds up to heavy use, and always looks beautiful”— another important factor, since like many families, the Pohlads usually end up in the kitchen during a get-together. Becky was also determined not to sacrifice an inch of storage. “You can change anything,” she told Beson, “but I need all my cabinets.” The Pohlads opted for streamlined Poggenpohl cabinetry, with three different door fronts to keep the cabinets from feeling monolithic or overbearing. Driftwood-grained doors made of resin line the perimeter lower cabinets, while

DESIGN A GREAT KITCHEN For Entertaining Having overseen a number of kitchen renovations, in both this house and the Pohlad vacation home, Becky knows the key factors that make a kitchen, or any frequently used living space, work well:

DON’T DO AWAY WITH UPPER CABINETS. It seems to be the fashion, but I can’t imagine giving up all that storage. It’s easy to just unload the dishes and glasses from the dishwashers directly into the cabinets above them. I SWEAR BY MY THREE SINK BASINS. One for rinsing, with a garbage disposal; one for washing; and one for draining. I also have two dishwashers flanking the sinks, which I think is essential when you do a lot of entertaining.

CHOOSE EASY-TO-CLEAN SURFACES. I like my Cambria countertops and cabinet-fronted appliances. They are important in this hard-working space and get constant, daily use. I appreciate that their being easy to clean doesn’t mean sacrificing beauty.

DESIGN YOUR KITCHEN TO WORK FOR YOU. I’m lefthanded, so it’s important for me to have plenty of counter space to the left of the sink, oven, and so forth. It’s much harder for me to work in a “right-handed” kitchen. I’m also short, so we created spots to tuck stepstools into cabinets. TREAT THE CENTRAL WORK AREA OF YOUR KITCHEN LIKE YOUR COCKPIT. You want people outside, not in it. Our peninsula with comfy barstools helps keep people out of the workspace.

GOOD LIGHTING IS ESSENTIAL. Lighting really defines the

space and sets a mood. I learned from Billy that it’s better to have a lot of lights and dim them down, rather than a few turned all the way up. Once we’re finished in the kitchen, I like to leave some under-counter lights on, or a few up lights, or just use the outdoor lighting to create some mood lighting. And beautiful fixtures, like the pendants over our peninsula, are like adding a work of art.

glass doors with a satin mirror finish on the interior lighten the look of the upper cabinets. A darker oak finish colors the island. Becky chose cabinet fronts for appliances such as the refrigerator/freezer and dishwashers, again for easy-care reasons: “I used to have

stainless-steel refrigerators, but they showed every handprint. We live with three German shepherds, and now we have grandchildren. Cabinet fronts are so much more forgiving.” The beautiful hand-hewn walnut floors were also selected for their canine-friendly qualities. “We

had soft pine floors the first time, and that was not good,” says Becky. “The walnut can tolerate the nails of three German shepherds.” In addition to opening up the main rooms on the ground floor for entertaining, Becky and Bob embraced some other changes to suit their empty-nest freedom: One son’s bedroom became a gym, and the former dining room was turned into Becky’s office and sitting room. A home office is a real boon to a woman who manages a wide range of philanthropic projects, from the Humane Society to the Walker Art Center, not to mention her own family’s activities. “It’s wonderful to have my own space, where I can shut the door and people have to knock,” says Becky. “It’s also a great place to sit and enjoy coffee with a friend.” A MORE OPEN, CONTEMPORARY FEEL

As they contemplated this renovation, with fewer rooms, more open space, and a more modern feeling, Becky wondered, “Can we really make our traditional red brick Colonial work with this new look?” By keeping traditional elements, but going a little bolder in scale and palette (deep neutrals shot through with cheerful pops of color), Beson made it all come together. “I call it ‘new traditional,’” he says. “It’s still traditional, but the excess and ornamentation have been stripped away. There’s less wall-to-wall carpeting and more hardwood floors, and we’ve exchanged the swags and jabots for simple tailored draperies.” Even the two-story entrance hall got a dramatic makeover. In place of the traditional spindled staircase, Beson designed a grid of iron and walnut. Sheathing the walls are panels of faux woven leather detailed with bands of stainless steel. Through the center of it all floats a stunning three-sphere chandelier fashioned from twists of hand-blown glass, each piece suspended from a thread of steel wire. Becky’s office, located between the foyer and the kitchen, means she is within a few steps of all that requires her attention at home. The vibrant palette was sparked by the striped velvet upholstery fabric on the sofa and chair and a custom rug Billy Beson designed and had made by Richard Rehl of Aubry Angelo. The rest of the room remains quietly neutral to maintain visual continuity to the entry and the kitchen, glimpsed through doors at either side. In the end, the risk the Pohlads took in transforming their traditional family house into an open, airy home for entertaining has paid off handsomely: The house’s latest incarnation still suits family living, whether it’s just Becky and Bob, or the entire Pohlad gang for the holidays, or a cocktail fundraiser for 100. Who knows what the home’s next life might bring?

BILLY’S TIPS TO CREATE AN EASY-TO-CARE-FOR KITCHEN

Designer Billy Beson shares his advice for designing a low-maintenance, family-friendly kitchen: Put your materials to the test. Take a sample of whatever countertop material you’re considering, and squeeze a lemon on it, spill some red wine, or dribble olive oil. Absorbent stones such as marble and limestone will stain, unlike a quartz like Cambria. Stay away from leather. This goes for banquettes and barstools, which, like marble, will show every stain. Faux suedes and leathers (vinyls) have improved markedly in terms of appearance and durability. Indoor/outdoor fabrics, which are solution-dyed and can often be cleaned with bleach, are also very durable and come in a wide range of stylish patterns.

Choose finishes carefully. If you opt for stainless steel appliances, get a brushed finish, which won’t show streaks or fingerprints so easily. As for cabinets, painted finishes have become more durable, especially catalytic lacquers, like those used for painting cars, and you can opt for a low-sheen finish. And if wood gets gouged, it can be sanded down and refinished. Match flooring to your lifestyle. Porcelain tile floors are the most practical flooring choice, and have come a long way in terms of styles and options. Hard species of wood floors, such as walnut, are also very forgiving, especially if they are hand-hewn, distressed, or reclaimed planks; however, the shinier the floor, the more scratches and dings will show. I recommend two coats of high-gloss polyurethane for a strong, hard finish, and then the final coat in a matte finish to reduce the sheen.

INGREDIENTS ½ tsp. minced onion ½ tsp. minced garlic 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce ½ cup panko bread crumbs ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp. kosher salt 1 pound ground Kobe chuck 4 pretzel rolls, split in half 4 tsp. melted butter

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 250° F. Preheat a griddle to 450° F. 2. Combine the onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, bread crumbs, pepper and salt in a small bowl. Set aside. 3. Line a jellyroll or sheet pan with parchment paper, and place the ground chuck in the middle of the pan. Cover the meat with a large sheet of plastic wrap. Roll meat with a rolling pin until it covers the surface of the pan; it should be very thin. Remove the plastic wrap, and sprinkle the meat with the seasoning mixture.

Fold the meat in half, from side to side, using the parchment paper. Use a pizza wheel to cut the meat into 4 even squares. 4. Brush the rolls with butter, wrap in foil and place in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile, place the burgers on the griddle and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side. Add cheese after the first turn. 5. Remove the buns from the oven. Build your burger with toppings and add any condiments you would like and serve immediately. MAKES 4 BURGERS.

Mini B urger B uffet

INGREDIENTS 1½ pounds ground beef 1 large clove garlic, minced ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. pepper FLAVOR VARIATIONS Smoky BBQ Cheddar, Buffalo Style or Taco (recipes follow) 1. Combine basic Mini Burger ingredients in medium bowl, adding desired flavor variation ingredients and mixing lightly but thoroughly.

Lightly shape into twelve 1/2-inch thick mini patties. 2. Place patties on grid over medium, ash-covered coals. Grill, covered, 8 to 10 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, covered, 9 to 11 minutes) until instant-read thermometer inserted horizontally into center registers 160°F, turning occasionally. 3. Serve mini burgers as directed in desired flavor variation.

SMOKY BBQ CHEDDAR:

Add 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese to basic Mini Burger mixture. Halfway through grilling, baste patties with ¼ cup hickory barbecue sauce. Place burgers on bottoms of 12 split small dinner rolls. Top evenly with 24 sweet or dill pickle slices and ¾ cup prepared coleslaw. Close sandwiches. Serve with additional barbecue sauce, as desired.

BUFFALO STYLE:

Add ¼ tsp. ground red pepper and ½ cup crumbled blue cheese to basic Mini Burger mixture. While patties are grilling, combine 3 tbsp. melted butter and ¼ cup hot pepper sauce. Set aside. Place burgers on bottoms of 12 split small dinner rolls. Top evenly with thinly sliced celery, shredded carrots, as desired, and some of the hot sauce mixture. Close sandwiches. Serve with blue cheese dressing, as desired, and remaining hot sauce mixture.

TACO:

Add one package (1.25 ounces) taco seasoning mix to Basic Mini Burger mixture. While patties are grilling, combine ½ cup dairy sour cream and 2 tsp. fresh lime juice. Set aside. Cut burgers in half and place both halves in each of 12 taco shells. Top evenly with shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, shredded Cheddar cheese or Mexican cheese blend, salsa, and sour cream mixture, as desired. MAKES 12 BURGERS.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE PATTIES 1¾ pounds ground chuck 2 garlic cloves, crushed Pinch of red pepper flakes 2 Tbsp. chopped parsley 1 egg ¼ cup finely diced onion 2-4 Tbsp. fresh bread crumbs 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard FOR THE GARNISH 4 slices aged Canadian Cheddar cheese 1 onion, cut into thick slices 8 slices Peameal (cornmeal) bacon 4 hamburger buns with sesame seeds

Butter, for the buns 8 slices tomato 4 pickles, sliced lengthwise Iceberg lettuce Tomato ketchup mayonnaise Dijon mustard 1. To make the patties, combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix together well. Form into four patties. Preheat grill to medium high and place the patties on the grill. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, then turn and continue cooking for a couple of minutes until desired doneness.

2. In the meantime, grill bacon slices for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until juicy and cooked through. Place bacon on the burger and top with Cheddar cheese. Close grill lid for 1 to 2 minutes, or until cheese begins to melt. 3. Butter the buns and grill, butter side down, until golden. Place the cheese and bacon-topped patty on bun. Top with tomato, pickle slices, and iceberg lettuce. Finish with condiments as desired. Serve immediately. MAKES 4 BURGERS.

JUNKERS, ANTIQUERS, TAG SALERS, AND VINTAGE DEVOTEES, UNITE! Across the U.S., some 1,100 flea markets did some $30 billion in business last year, according to the National Flea Market Association. A shaky economy means more people than ever are out trolling the Saturday morning stands hunting for that perfect item at just the right price. There’s also a new generation of shoppers who are embracing the markets’ “green” ethos, says Ki Nassauer, editor in chief of Flea Market Style magazine.

“The demographics are so much younger now, it’s 20-year-olds,” Nassauer said. “For them, there’s no stigma to ‘reuse, renew, recycle.’” How can you get in on getting a good deal? Here are some tips from the pros—vendors, shoppers, collectors—about when to go, what to avoid, and the art of haggling.

BE PREPARED: Pack a large bag with a measuring tape (for sizing up furniture), newspaper (to wrap delicate items), a camera (more on this later), and cash— lots of cash. Christine Edmonds, co-owner of Trove Decor in

Newtown, PA., says she takes as much as $500, all in $5 bills, because vendors can offer better treatment and prices to shoppers who make paying easier.

aren’t familiar with the real value of an item. When you go off the beaten path, fewer shoppers mean there’s less competition for the sellers.

EARLY OR LATE? If you’re looking for the greatest selection, go an hour before the market opens. Good finds at good prices go fast, says Jill Ridener, owner of the Etsy shop Bellalulu Vintage. Why go late? Prices often fall as the day winds down.

BUILD A RAPPORT: Break the ice by asking about the history of an item you want. Ask how the vendor got into the business. And be genuine. “Ideally, you both want to leave a transaction feeling like something positive happened,” says Lauren Lipton, an avid vintage clothing and tag sale shopper from Manhattan. HIT THE ROAD: Treasures are often found where local sellers

cameras have become a great asset, Nassauer says. Pictures are an easy memory aid—and a tool for on-the-fence shoppers. One warning: Ask the vendor if it’s OK to take a picture—some may be touchy about copycats stealing their display ideas.

BE RESPECTFUL: If you have small kids with you, make sure they don’t damage a vendor’s goods. Also, don’t insult sellers about the quality of their offerings. “Ninety-nine percent of sellers are really reputable people,” Nassauer says. “Treat them the way you want to be treated as a customer.”

TAKE A LAP FIRST: But if you come across that must-have item, don’t hesitate. Vendors say all bets are off if you set something down, even for a moment. 44 |

WHERE TO START: An item with no price tag is an invitation to open negotiations. The seller usually has a price in mind, and it may depend on the time of day. Nassauer’s rule: Never speak first. “More often than not, they’ll give you a price lower than what you had in mind.”

WHEN TO GO FOR IT: The polite way to test the waters? Ask: “What’s your best price?” If the seller doesn’t move off the price, be respectful and just say “thank you.” That reaction alone could prompt the seller to jump back in, Nassauer says. Typically, 15 percent off the marked price is a good deal, but a 40 percent discount isn’t unheard of.

have an unrealistic attachment to an item, or set prices far too high. If an initial haggling foray goes nowhere, walk away. A good vendor knows their market and prices items accordingly. But if you’re getting a decent price, just buy it. “Be a nice person,” Lipton says. “Don’t cheat someone out of their livelihood just to haggle for a few more dollars off.”

WHEN TO STOP: “Don’t haggle when you know you’re getting a great deal,” says Edmonds of Trove Decor. She once came upon a $49 tag on a coveted Artemide Tizio floor lamp, a modern design that can fetch $600. She snapped it up—and as she rushed to pay, she spotted a signed titanium Tizio desk model that was worth $1,000, priced at a mere $39. The vendor shook his head, noting how “funny looking” the items were, as he took Edmonds’ cash for both. “They sure are,” she smiled.
