Macroeconomics and monetary economics 9 •
Wider international coverage, with greater emphasis on comparisons with countries outside the European Union
‘Now that an integrated European banking and financial system has become established, there is a need for a book to describe and to analyse its working. The authors, who have great experience in the practical, regulatory and academic aspects of their subject, do this admirably, clearly and succinctly. This will be an invaluable textbook for all students of European banking and finance.’ Charles Goodhart, Professor Emeritus of Banking and Finance, London School of Economics
FINANCIAL MARKETS AND INSTITUTIONS
Finance 6
‘A quarter of a century ago, the European financial system consisted of segmented national markets and institutions. The process of creating a single unified system has made considerable progress but still has some way to go. This book provides an excellent account of why this process is important, the current situation, and how it will proceed in the future. It is very well suited for its target audience of advanced undergraduates and Masters students and will be useful to all those interested in the topic. I highly recommend it.’ Franklin Allen, Executive Director of the Brevan Howard Centre and Professor of Finance and Economics at Imperial College London

Modeling Monetary Economies: Third Edition
Economic development and growth 14
“This is simply the best book on monetary theory with which I am familiar. I cannot emphasize strongly enough how this book belongs in the curriculum of advanced undergraduates. There is no acceptable alternative. Former students have told me that the best favor that they did for themselves, before going to graduate school in economics, was reading the earlier version of Champ and Freeman, cover to cover. In a better world, this would be the standard undergraduate macro text. The ideal course is based on Champ and Freeman, and on Russell W. Cooper, Coordination Games: Complementaries and Macroeconomics, Cambridge University Press, 1999. If you cannot do this for your intermediate students, do it for your advanced students.” – John Bryant, Rice University and CentER, Tilburg University “This text is ingenious in the simplicity with which it is able to explain monetary phenomena while at the same time maintaining rigor. I taught out of earlier editions several times in undergraduate and MBA classes. With the addition of new topical material, the text can only be even better.” – Finn E. Kydland, 2004 Nobel Prize in Economics; University of California, Santa Barbara
Public economics and public policy 16 Political economy
“I have taught both undergraduates and MBAs with both previous editions of this book and found them to be wonderful texts. Both my students and I appreciated the books’ clear presentations. They are clear because they are rigorous and avoid the ‘implicit theorizing’ that can mystify undergraduates and MBAs.” – Thomas Sargent, New York University

Susan Rose-Ackerman, Yale Universty Bonnie J. Palifka, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey, Mexico Authors of Corruption and Government, 2nd Edition Building on Rose-Ackerman’s classic work on corruption, we engage the reader in contemporary research and policy debates. Anchored in a political-economy framework, we support our arguments with corruption-related data, new cases from around the world, and references to the vast empirical literature published since 1999. We argue that properly designed political and economic institutions can help constrain corruption, even when it is entrenched. The book is a must-read for students of development, policymakers, and anticorruption reformers alike.

Econometrics, statistics and mathematical economics Best-Worst Scaling Theory, Methods and Applications Jordan J. Louviere University of South Australia
Terry N. Flynn TF Choices Ltd.
and A. A. J. Marley University of South Australia and University of Victoria, British Columbia
This is the first systematic treatment of the theory and application of bestworst scaling (BWS), an emerging methodology in choice experiments. The three types of best-worst scaling are introduced and explored, and example applications and case studies illustrate how to implement, apply, and analyze the theory across many different disciplines. ‘Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) has emerged as a novel and innovative method for eliciting preferences and understanding choice behavior. This book provides researchers and practitioners with a clear understanding of the origins, theory, and use of BWS and contains interesting case studies from a range of disciplines. This excellent collection of papers also provides a fascinating story of how a new research method moves from initial ideas to adoption by researchers in multiple fields worldwide. It is a must-have reference for current users or those interested in learning about BWS.’ W. L. Causal Inference for Statistics, Social, and Biomedical Sciences An Introduction Guido W. Imbens Stanford University, California
and Donald B. Rubin Harvard University, Massachusetts
In this groundbreaking text, two worldrenowned experts present statistical methods for studying causal effects: how can we learn about the expected effect of an intervention or a change in environment? The authors discuss how we can assess such effects in simple randomized experiments, where the researcher controls the treatments, and in observational studies, where the subjects themselves may affect which treatment they receive. ‘This book offers a definitive treatment of causality using the potential outcomes approach. Both theoreticians and applied researchers will find this an indispensable volume for guidance and reference.’ Hal Varian, Chief Economist, Google and Emeritus Professor, University of California, Berkeley

Contest Theory Incentive Mechanisms and Ranking Methods Milan Vojnovic Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK
Contests are prevalent in many areas, from sports, to labor markets, to resource allocation, to crowdsourcing. Using a game-theoretic framework, this unified, comprehensive treatment pays particular attention to online applications of contest design, allowing professionals, researchers and students to learn about the theoretical principles and to test them in practice. Advance praise: ‘Contest theory, including the war of attrition, winner-take-all competition, and tournaments, has recently received renewed attention, due to its applicability to online rating systems, platform competition, and other internet phenomena. Milan Vojnovic’s book is a delightful and thorough examination of the state of the art in contest modeling, for economists and computer scientists alike.’ Preston McAfee, Microsoft

Almost All About Unit Roots Foundations, Developments, and Applications In Choi Sogang University, Seoul
Many economic theories depend on the presence or absence of a unit root for their validity, making familiarity with unit roots extremely important to econometric and statistical theory. This book introduces the literature on unit roots in a comprehensive manner to empirical and theoretical researchers in economics and other areas. ‘Choi’s monograph provides an authoritative introduction to and survey of the literature on unit roots, which spans economics, statistics and other fields. Its handbook style and clear treatment make it an extremely convenient graduate-level reference for those working with highly persistent time series data.’ J. Isaac Miller, University of Missouri

Gagliardini and Gouriéroux propose and explore asymptotic expansions (granularity adjustments) that do just that. As expected, their book displays a wonderful clarity of thought and will be highly valued in academic, policy and practitioner circles.’ Francis X. Diebold, Paul F. and Warren S. This book offers the first integrated theoretical analysis of economic and political factors which determine the level of quality standards, as well as their economic effects along the value chain, shedding light on one of the most striking evolutions affecting global trade and development today. ‘With this book Jo Swinnen et al. make an important contribution to our understanding of the economics of standards. They develop an elegant theoretical approach to analyze the complex interplay between the different interest groups that can influence quality standards in food value chains. Who gains, who loses, and why do inefficient levels of standards persist? The book should entice others to test empirically the rich body of theoretical conclusions it offers.’ Ken Ash, Director, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development 2015 228 x 152 mm 250pp 35 b/w illus. 978-1-107-02591-2 Hardback £74.99 / US$120.00 978-1-107-68886-5 Paperback £24.99 / US$39.99 For all formats available, see

Industrial Organization Markets and Strategies Second edition Paul Belleflamme Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium
and Martin Peitz Universität Mannheim, Germany
Thoroughly revised according to classroom feedback, this comprehensive textbook provides an up-to-date account of modern industrial organization that blends theory with numerous real-
world applications. Formal models are presented in detail, and the main results are summarized in ‘lessons’ which highlight the main insights. ‘The second edition of Paul Belleflamme and Martin Peitz’s Industrial Organization: Markets and Strategies is encyclopedic in its coverage of modern industrial organization, including both seminal and new models. The authors present models with exactly the right level of formal detail to equip students and practitioners with what they need to understand a plethora of issues ranging from two-sided markets to price discrimination. I commend the authors for doing the impossible – improving their initial gem.’ Michael Baye, Bert Elwert Professor of Business Economics, Kelley School of Business, Indiana University

Commodity Markets and the Global Economy Blake C. Clayton Citigroup and Council on Foreign Relations, New York
Blake Clayton, a Wall Street analyst and adjunct fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, draws on the latest thinking from academia and the private sector to deliver a clear-eyed analysis of pressing questions at the intersection of commodity markets, natural resource economics, and public policy. ‘Through his experience in the academy, think-tanks, and leading private companies, Dr Blake Clayton is uniquely well-placed to make sense of the complex events of the recent past in the highly volatile commodity markets. Accordingly, if one wants an accessible, even-handed view of the myriad of competing forces that are shaping commodity markets, a reader will not be able to find a better book than Commodity Markets and the Global Economy.’ Hilary Till, Principal, Premia Capital Management, LLC, and Co-Editor, Intelligent Commodity Investing 2015 228 x 152 mm 200pp 55 b/w illus. 978-1-107-04251-3 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 978-1-107-61692-9 Paperback £21.99 / US$34.99 For all formats available, see

Financial Markets and Institutions A European Perspective Third edition Jakob de Haan Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands
Sander Oosterloo Ministry of Finance, The Netherlands
and Dirk Schoenmaker Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam
Written for undergraduate and graduate students of finance, economics and business, this successful textbook examines and explains financial markets, infrastructures and institutions from a European perspective. The third edition features greater discussion of the financial and Euro crises and provides wider international coverage of countries outside the European Union. I highly recommend it.’ Franklin Allen, Executive Director of the Brevan Howard Centre and Professor, Imperial College London

King William’s Tontine Why the Retirement Annuity of the Future Should Resemble its Past Moshe Milevsky York University, Toronto
The book reviews the finance, economics, and history of tontines, through the story of the first tontine in England in 1693, which was intended to finance the war against France. Although tontines eventually disappeared from the financial landscape, the author argues they should be resurrected in the twenty-first century. ‘King William’s Tontine entertains and, by asking why retirees should not be paid handsomely for bearing a little actuarial risk, informs our response to the looming retirement crisis in a way that no other book does. It should be read – with pleasure – by anyone with a personal or policy interest in this vital area.’ William J. International economics Power and Global Economic Institutions Ayse Kaya Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania
Major shifts in economic power, marked by the rise of the BRICS, have recently affected key multilateral economic institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund. Ayse Kaya advances a novel approach to understanding the relationship between states’ economic power and their formal political power in multilateral economic institutions. ‘This ambitious study opens up the black box of how power and institutions interact in the rapidly changing post-Crisis world of global economic governance. Kaya exposes the tensions between the formal and informal faces of power in the struggle to influence both rules and outcomes across the World Bank, the IMF, and the emerging G20 process. Her analysis tells us that where the ‘declining old’ might prove too slow in ceding their formal institutional prerogatives, the ‘rising new’ may up the ante and take the game elsewhere to new forums. Global governance thus becomes less predictable and institutions less effective at adapting to the need for change. In short, Kaya’s analysis shows us how familiar institutions remain a potentially fragile part of an increasingly fragile world order. A ‘must’ for scholars and students alike.’ Geoffrey Underhill, University of Amsterdam

Modeling Monetary Economies: Third Edition
“Theory that encourages careful thinking. Applications that demonstrate relevance. All delivered in an easy yet rigorous manner. An essential text for any course in money and banking.” – David Andolfatto, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis “This is simply the best book on monetary theory with which I am familiar.
Advance praise: ‘For professors, this text is a wonderful complement to an intermediate macro course. Using Excel in class really brings the material to life, and using Excel in assignments helps to build [students’] economic intuition while giving them a marketable skill. And the material can be used piecemeal – you can pick and choose which bits to put in your course. All macro teachers should think seriously about bringing this approach into the classroom.’ “I have taught both undergraduates and MBAs with both previous editions of this book and found them to be wonderful texts. Both my students and I appreciated the books’ clear presentations. They are clear because they are rigorous and avoid the ‘implicit theorizing’ that can mystify undergraduates and MBAs.” – Thomas Sargent, New York University “Champ, Freeman, and Haslag’s Modeling Monetary Economies is an excellent tool for teaching monetary economics to undergraduate students. The authors use a coherent and simple framework that can be addressed to a host of key issues in money, credit, and banking.” – Stephen Williamson, Washington University in St. Louis Bruce Champ is Senior Research Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Scott Freeman was a Professor of Economics at the University of Texas, Austin. Joseph Haslag is Professor and Kenneth Lay Chair in Economics at the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Macroeconomics and monetary economics at presenting alternatives to Lucasian macroeconomics. Advance praise: ‘Michel De Vroey does not simply record what he finds. He has a vision of the kind of macroeconomics he would like to see, perhaps one he developed gradually over the years he has worked on this book. What makes this book enjoyable is that he has high hopes for economics, he flatters us that we are important, and he praises the progress we have achieved. In the end he has the integrity not to hide his disappointments, his conviction that while there is no turning back, there is still a long way to go.’ Robert E. The Political Economy of Predation Manhunting and the Economics of Escape Mehrdad Vahabi Université de Paris VIII and Centre d’Economie de la Sorbonne
Conflict theory presents a growing interest in understanding the economic costs and benefits of conflicts. Mehrdad Vahabi analyses conflict theory through one type of conflict in particular: manhunting, or predation, in which a dominant power hunts down prey, and the goal of the prey is to escape and thus survive. Advance praise: ‘Standard economics has long assumed a society of free, contracting individuals with equal legal rights. Power and authority are understood in contractual terms. In his most powerful statement to date, Mehrdad Vahabi challenges all that. Violence and subjugation are brought back into the picture. We are forced to rethink everything.’ Geoffrey M. The Euro Experiment Paul Wallace The Economist
Written by a leading commentator on the economics of the European Union, this book provides a clear and analytical guide to the euro experiment and the subsequent crisis. It is written in a balanced way that is neither pro-euro nor euro-sceptic and will appeal to a wide readership. ‘This excellent book provides a convincing analysis of the euro crisis, examining six distinct facets of it, of which deeply flawed governance is adjudged to have been the most damaging. It is very well researched, well documented and has clearly benefited from the author’s proximity to the action throughout the many twists and turns. A particular strength of the book is that, unlike the analyses of so many mainstream economists (especially those of an Anglo-Saxon persuasion), it explains the complicated political economy challenges behind the crisis.’ Iain Begg, Professorial Research Fellow, European Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science 2015 228 x 152 mm 353pp 15 b/w illus. 2 tables 978-1-107-10489-1 Hardback £24.99 / US$39.99

Natural resource and environmental economics
Natural resource and environmental economics Climate Change, Capitalism, and Corporations Processes of Creative SelfDestruction Christopher Wright University of Sydney
and Daniel Nyberg University of Newcastle, New South Wales
This book explores the complex relationship that the corporate world has with climate change and examines the different ways that corporations engage with the climate crisis. Topics include climate change as business risk; corporate climate politics; the role of justification and compromise; managerial identity and emotional reactions to climate change. ‘This book makes clear that climate change is not a ‘problem’ for which there can be a ‘solution’. It requires a re-examination of the core structures of our society, and in particular our economy. Using solid research and analysis, Christopher Wright and Daniel Nyberg untangle the complex and multiple ways that corporations are shaping humanity’s response to the climate crisis, ways that are unfortunately inadequate to the challenge at hand. In this engaging text, we are challenged to envision alternative futures that will, indeed they must, challenge how we think, who we are, and how we relate to each other and to the natural world around us.’ Andrew J. The Price of Oil Roberto F. Aguilera Luleå Tekniska Universitet, Sweden
Written for a broad readership, this book provides an in-depth examination of oil’s extraordinary price increase over the past few decades. The authors explain why we are at a turning point where scarcity, uncertain supply and high prices will be replaced by abundance, undisturbed availability and suppressed price levels. ‘This cheerfully iconoclastic analysis of the past, present and future of the petroleum industry makes a compelling read. Whilst some of its conclusions will be undoubtedly challenged as contradicting the conventional wisdom, it carefully sets out their underlying logic and assumptions. That applies as much to the first part that anatomises the behaviour of crude oil prices over the past forty years as to the subsequent discussion of the shale oil revolution and its implications. Although the authors’ own views of the future are clear they are careful to stress the uncertainties and are at pains to provide a range of possible futures. The book should be required reading not just for specialists but for all those involved with the petroleum industry and energy policy, however tangentially.’ Phillip Crowson, Honorary Professor and Professorial Research Fellow, Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy, University of Dundee 2015 228 x 152 mm 252pp 18 b/w illus. 18 tables 978-1-107-11001-4 Hardback £69.99 / US$120.00 978-1-107-52562-7 Paperback £24.99 / US$39.99 For all formats available, see

Microfinance in the form of small loans to promote entrepreneurial activity is increasingly seen as a sustainable means of aiding the global poor. This book examines the ethical issues arising from microfinance practices, including important questions about exploitation, human rights, and efforts to promote global justice. ‘Discussed in this volume are important moral issues arising with the spread of microfinance as a poverty alleviation tool. The authors debate whether there is a human right to microfinance and, if so, whether this is a new human right or a conceptual expansion of conventional ones. These debates are especially useful because they closely examine the actual practice of microfinance: whether interest rates are excessive, for instance, and whether indefensible pressure is put on participants in group finance schemes. The volume’s rigorous and empirically informed normative analyses are important for scholars and students focused on severe poverty, development practice and global justice.’ Thomas Pogge, Yale University 2015 228 x 152 mm 212pp 2 b/w illus. 4 tables 978-1-107-11097-7 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

The Ethics of Influence Government in the Age of Behavioral Science Cass R. Sunstein Harvard University, Massachusetts
In recent years, ‘Nudge Units’ or ‘Behavioral Insights Teams’ have been created in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and other nations. All over the world, public officials are using the behavioral sciences to protect the environment, promote employment and economic growth, reduce poverty, and increase national security. In this book, Cass R. Sunstein, the eminent legal scholar and bestselling co-author of Nudge, breaks new ground with a deep yet highly readable investigation into the ethical issues surrounding nudges, choice architecture, and mandates, addressing such issues as welfare, autonomy, selfgovernment, dignity, manipulation, and the constraints and responsibilities of an ethical state. Complementing the ethical discussion, The Ethics of Influence: Government in the Age of Behavioral Science contains a wealth of new data on people’s attitudes towards a broad
Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey, Mexico
The first edition is a classic, and this extensively rewritten second edition should become one as well. Political and economic institutions create incentives for corruption, and the book shows how these can be reduced by thoughtful reform. It draws on case studies and statistical research from developing and wealthy states. Advance praise: ‘Susan Rose-Ackerman has been a powerful ally of Transparency International (TI), from its very beginnings more than twenty years ago. Through her writing, teaching, and speaking she accompanied our battle against corruption with her thoughtful, sometimes critical, economist perspective of our activism. The first edition of this book came out just in time, to help strengthen the conceptual framework of fighting corruption in various institutions, and the anti-corruption community will be grateful to Susan and her coauthor, Bonnie J. Palifka, for producing the new edition of this seminal work. The strong conceptual economic framework provided in this book will be needed for practitioners, teachers, scholars, and the media as we continue our battle against the scourge of corruption.’ Peter Eigen, Founder and Chairman of the Advisory Council, Transparency International 2016 228 x 152 mm 616pp 33 b/w illus. 978-1-107-08120-8 Hardback £74.99 / US$120.00 978-1-107-44109-5 Paperback £26.99 / US$39.99 Publication March 2016 For all formats available, see

Welfare for the Wealthy Parties, Social Spending, and Inequality in the United States Christopher G. Faricy Syracuse University, New York
Welfare for the Wealthy examines how political party power influences both public spending and private subsidies and how, in turn, these changes affect inequality. Christopher Faricy finds that both Democrats and Republicans have increased federal social spending, but differ in how they spend federal money, and which socioeconomic groups benefit. ‘Christopher Faricy provides a critically important and typically overlooked perspective on America’s welfare state. By bringing tax expenditures, as well as direct government spending into the discussion, he shows that redistributive social policies are embraced by both political parties – using different policy tools and benefiting different constituencies. The powerful arguments and careful analyses in Welfare for the Wealthy enrich our understanding of both partisan politics and social welfare in the United States.’ Martin Gilens, Princeton University, New Jersey 2015 228 x 152 mm 268pp 18 b/w illus. 22 tables 978-1-107-10101-2 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

Presidents have long claimed to be sole stewards of the interests of all Americans. Kriner and Reeves challenge this notion and show how presidents systematically pursue policies that disproportionately benefit their more narrow partisan and electoral constituencies. Contrary to popular characterization, they are particularistic politicians who prioritize the needs of certain constituents over others.

Land Bargains and Chinese Capitalism The Politics of Property Rights under Reform Meg E. Rithmire Harvard Business School
Land development, real estate, and urban expansion have been central to Chinese economic growth over the last several decades, even in the absence of private property rights. This book explains the origins of contemporary land politics and explores how land conflict, property rights, and urban growth strategies differ among Chinese cities. ‘This bold, deeply researched study of how three northeastern cities in China disparately redefined the rights to and the usage of urban property to placate losers while facilitating economic reform is not just a model of the comparative method. Its insight about how the search for state legitimacy and the underwriting of what were really political deals with moral language is also a novel way of making sense of one facet of China’s relentless commercialization. It will appeal to political economists and China scholars alike.’ Dorothy Solinger, University of California, Irvine

Power and the Vote Elections and Electricity in the Developing World Brian Min University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Power and the Vote newly engages the debate on democracy’s impact in the developing world with fresh data and theory. Scholars and policymakers will appreciate the focus on the underestimated energy challenge facing the world’s poor and insights on how politics shapes the delivery of even technical services like electricity. ‘Hundreds of millions lack reliable access to electricity, the foundation of modern life. Brian Min uses his mastery of the nuts and bolts of the sector to show that it is politicians who flip the switch. This fine book should be widely read. Soft Law and the Global Financial System Rule Making in the 21st Century Second edition Chris Brummer Georgetown University Law Center
This book explains how international financial law ‘works’ – and presents an alternative theory for understanding its purpose, operation, and limitations. Drawing on a close institutional analysis of the post-crisis financial architecture, it argues that international financial law is more coercive than classical theories of international law predict. Review of previous edition: ‘Chris Brummer provides a detailed and informative analysis of the international regulatory response to the global financial crisis of 2008. This accomplishment alone warrants a close look at this book. But Professor Brummer goes further in this pivotal work on the law of international finance. He provides a persuasive theoretical account of international financial law. Soft Law and the Global Financial System not only describes the mechanisms of lawmaking and standard-setting for global financial markets, but also delivers a workable framework for prescribing and perhaps even perfecting the regulation of the world’s most vital and volatile economic institutions.’ Jim Chen, Justin Smith Morrill Chair in Law, Michigan State University 2015 228 x 152 mm 364pp 2 b/w illus. 978-1-107-12863-7 Hardback £69.99 / US$110.00 978-1-107-56944-7 Paperback £22.99 / US$39.99 For all formats available, see

Power Plays How International Institutions Reshape Coercive Diplomacy Allison Carnegie Columbia University, New York
Power Plays argues that coercive diplomacy causes difficulty cooperating due to fears of exploitation, but international institutions can solve these problems by preventing states to use certain tools for coercive purposes. By constraining the use of some instruments of coercion, institutions
cause states to rely on less effective alternative tools. ‘The success of the World Trade Organization in ensuring free trade has inadvertently shifted states’ coercive strategies toward other areas like foreign aid, regulation, and military intervention. This is just one of the many insights in Allison Carnegie’s excellent book, which challenges much of what we thought we knew about international institutions and international cooperation. Power Plays – with its mix of formal modeling, careful data analyses, and country case studies – will quickly become required reading among scholars of international relations.’ David A. Taxation, Responsiveness and Accountability in Sub-Saharan Africa The Dynamics of Tax Bargaining Wilson Prichard University of Toronto
There is extensive literature exploring the central role of taxation in processes of state building. This book builds on that foundation and provides the definitive account of these relationships in contemporary developing countries, drawing upon detailed qualitative cases studies from Ghana, Kenya and Ethiopia. ‘This book is a breakthrough in the study of the politics of taxation. It develops a powerful theory that links taxation to representation, a statistical analysis that supersedes (and overturns) many earlier studies, and three sharply observed case studies that show the theory in action. Prichard’s analysis will dramatically improve our understanding of fiscal politics and should be widely read by both scholars and policymakers.’ Michael L. Political economy The Politics of Advanced Capitalism Edited by Pablo Beramendi Duke University, North Carolina
Silja Häusermann Universität Zürich
Herbert Kitschelt Duke University, North Carolina
and Hanspeter Kriesi European University Institute, Florence
This book takes stock of the major economic and political challenges advanced capitalist democracies face today. It provides a synthetic view, allowing the reader to grasp the nature of key structural transformations and their consequences in terms of the politics of change, policy outputs, and outcomes. ‘This book offers the most compelling single-volume treatment to date of the evolution of advanced democratic capitalism and its subtypes. It provides state-of-the-art analysis of the character of postindustrial changes, their impact on cleavages and citizen preferences, and how parties fashion winning postindustrial political coalitions behind particular paths of adjustment. In doing so, Beramendi and colleagues reject functionalist and structuralist explanations of contemporary change and highlight the centrality of coalition building, partisan competition, and electoral politics for understanding the trajectories of advanced nations. The book concludes with an insightful examination of the consequences of particular paths of postindustrial policy adaption for economic outcomes, equality, and life satisfaction as well as the impact of recent economic crises on advanced capitalism. The Quest for Good Governance How Societies Develop Control of Corruption Alina Mungiu-Pippidi Hertie School of Governance, Berlin
Why do some societies manage to control corruption so that it manifests itself only occasionally, while other societies remain systemically corrupt? This book covers historical and
contemporary cases and easy-tounderstand statistics to build a case for a new theory and policy approach to building non-corrupt markets and states. ‘This is one of the most important books ever written on the most universal governance challenge of our time – how to control corruption. In this brilliant integration of theory, history, case studies and quantitative evidence, Alina Mungiu-Pippidi shows how countries move from the natural state of corruption, clientelism and particularistic governance to the impersonal norms of fairness, integrity and transparency that make for good governance. This is an indispensable work for any scholar, student or policy-maker who wants to understand how societies mobilize and states reform to control corruption.’ Larry Diamond, Director, Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law, Stanford University 2015 228 x 152 mm 314pp 11 b/w illus. 17 tables 978-1-107-11392-3 Hardback £59.99 / US$99.99 978-1-107-53457-5 Paperback £19.99 / US$34.99 For all formats available, see

Building Legislative Coalitions for Free Trade in Asia Globalization as Legislation Megumi Naoi University of California, San Diego
What accounts for the large reduction in trade barriers among new democracies in Asia after World War II? Using new data from Japan and Thailand, this book provides a surprising answer: politicians, especially party leaders, liberalized trade by buying off legislative support with side-payments such as pork barrel projects. ‘In this important book, Naoi refocuses the debate on trade politics to pay serious attention to the role of politicians. She argues that political leaders (such as prime ministers) use their control over government resources to shape and mobilize support for their desired trade legislation. Using comparative research to theorize about the politics of industrial policy in countries in the early stages of capitalist transformation that also experience the pressures of elections, this book provides four in-depth African country studies that illustrate the challenges to economic transformation and the politics of implementing industrial policies. ‘This provocative book goes beyond the aggregate data on economic growth in Africa to argue that industrial policy is the key to sustainable development. By carefully analyzing national- and sectoriallevel variations in industrial policies in Ghana, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Uganda, the authors expose the problems and prospects of accomplishing meaningful economic transformation. Most discussions attribute the 2008 financial crisis to financial complexity and regulatory laxity. According to Thomas Oatley, such explanations are incomplete. Through an examination of America’s postwar history, this book demonstrates that episodes of major financial instability develop every time the United States engages in a large deficit-financed military buildup.

Autocracy and Redistribution The Politics of Land Reform Michael Albertus University of Chicago
This book shows that land redistribution – the most consequential form of redistribution in the developing world – occurs more often under dictatorship than democracy. It offers a novel theory of land reform and tests it using extensive original data dating back to 1900. ‘This book is an exceptional achievement. It combines theoretical and methodological sophistication with empirical richness. Albertus demonstrates that land redistribution is more likely under dictatorship than democracy and builds a persuasive argument about why that is the case. The book is an outstanding contribution to the literatures on land redistribution, democracies and dictatorships, political economy, and Latin American politics.’ Scott Mainwaring, Eugene and Helen Conley Professor of Political Science, University of Notre Dame Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics

The fundamental question of political theory, one that precedes all other questions about the nature of political life, is why there is a state at all. This book describes the foundations of stateless societies, why and how states emerge, and the basis of political obligation. ‘With analytical clarity and fresh data, Carles Boix has produced a work that cannot be ignored by scholars interested in the biggest questions about politics, economics and society. What kinds of regimes generate the strongest economies? Where do these regimes come from? What is the relationship among politics, growth and inequality? Boix does not offer sound bite answers. The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action Elinor Ostrom
The governance of natural resources used by many individuals in common is an issue of increasing concern to policy analysts. Both state control and privatization of resources have been advocated, but neither the state nor the market have been uniformly successful in solving common pool resource problems. After critiquing the foundations of policy analysis as applied to natural resources, Elinor Ostrom here provides a unique body of empirical data to explore conditions under which common pool resource problems have been satisfactorily or unsatisfactorily solved. Dr Ostrom uses institutional analysis to explore different ways – both successful and unsuccessful – of governing the commons. In contrast to the proposition of the ‘tragedy of the commons’ argument, common pool problems sometimes are solved by voluntary organizations rather than by a coercive state. Among the cases considered are communal tenure in meadows and forests, irrigation communities and other water rights, and fisheries. ‘In this ambitious, provocative, and very useful book, Ostrom combines a lucid theoretical framework with a series of diverse and richly detailed case studies … she tightly reviews and
critiques extant models of cooperation and collective action and argues powerfully that communities of actors are sometimes able to maintain a common resource for long periods of time without outside intervention.’ Contemporary Sociology Canto Classics

The Dilemma of the Commoners Understanding the Use of Common Pool Resources in LongTerm Perspective Tine De Moor Universiteit Utrecht, The Netherlands
This book puts the debate on commons, commoners, and the disappearance of both throughout early modern and modern western Europe in a new light, through new approaches and innovative methodologies. Tine De Moor links the historical debate about the long-term evolution of commons to the presentday debates on common-pool resources. ‘Few people are more prepared than Tine De Moor to delve in the historical record of the commons, and to help restore the longue durée in our thinking about the commons. Now that the commons, in their old physical formats but also crucially in their new knowledge and digitally enabled formats, are making a return on the world stage, long-term thinking and an acquaintance with how they solved perennial issues is more important than ever. Maintaining sustainable commons over the longer term is crucial to protect our biosphere, and De Moor gives us the tools and historical experience to do so.’ Michel Bauwens, Founder, Foundation for Peerto-Peer Alternatives Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions

Resources, Production and Structural Dynamics offers a fresh approach to the economic theory of resources, outlining a new structural framework for the political economy of scarcity and rents, and proposing a novel way of organising empirical evidence concerning the role of resources in industrial growth. ‘Post-crisis economic thought is mainly focussed on macro-economics or financial markets, usually ignoring the fact that political economy is, and always has been, their critical setting. Exceptionally, this major work by leading scholars treats the longstanding topics of political economy – resources, scarcities and rents

Behind the Model A Constructive Critique of Economic Modeling Peter Spiegler University of Massachusetts, Amherst
This ambitious book reveals how formal models are constructed in economics. Ranging across economics, philosophy, and social science methods, and drawing on examples, including the recent financial crisis, Behind the Model will be of interest to anyone who has wondered how economics works – and why it sometimes fails. ‘The 2007–9 global financial crisis and Great Recession demonstrated that the most prestigious economic models were incapable of recognizing, much less preventing, the debacle. How could this be possible? Peter Spiegler’s critique of mainstream mathematical modeling methodology delivers a compelling explanation. More important still, Speigler advances alternative theoretical and empirical methodologies that are capable of reframing economics as a viable scientific endeavor. Behind the Model is a deeply insightful work
that should force all open-minded economists to rethink their most basic presuppositions and practices.’ Robert Pollin, Distinguished Professor of Economics and Co-Director, Political Economy Research Institute (PERI), University of Massachusetts, Amherst Strategies for Social Inquiry

A revised and fully-updated new edition of this leading survey of the twentieth-century European economy. Ivan Berend provides an integrated, comparative account of European economic development from the evolution of capitalism to the fascist and communist regimes and their collapse, and the causes and impacts of the 2008 financial crisis. Advance praise: ‘An Economic History of TwentiethCentury Europe represents a tour de force that only a scholar with the broad intellectual interests, ambition, and experience of Professor Berend could have undertaken. The twentieth century appears as a long and dramatic journey between two globalization episodes in which dramatic social experiments were carried out and material progress and well-being reached the highest levels ever.’ Leandro Prados-de-la-Escosura, Charles III University of Madrid

Economic history The Great Divergence Reconsidered Europe, India, and the Rise to Global Economic Power Roman Studer Universität Zürich
Studer shows that Europe’s rise to its current status as an undisputed world economic leader was not the effect of the Industrial Revolution; rather, an interplay of institutional, geographical, political, and technological factors accounts for Europe’s early and gradual rise to its status as a global superpower. ‘Adam Smith’s central thesis was that efficient markets generate economic growth. This lively book revives the Smithian tradition. Efficient markets create growth, and efficient markets were unique to pre-industrial Europe. This is an important contribution to the debate on why the West rather than the East experienced the Industrial Revolution.’ Gregory Clark, University of California, Davis 2015 228 x 152 mm 244pp 30 b/w illus. 10 maps 9 tables 978-1-107-02054-2 Hardback £65.00 / US$99.00 For all formats available, see

The Material Atlantic Clothing, Commerce, and Colonization in the Atlantic World, 1650–1800 Robert DuPlessis Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania
In this wide-ranging account, Robert DuPlessis examines globally sourced textiles that by dramatically altering consumer behaviour, helped create new economies and societies in the early modern world. This deeply researched history of cloth and clothing offers new insights into trade patterns, consumer demand and sartorial cultures that emerged across the Atlantic world between the mid-seventeenth and late-eighteenth centuries. As a result of European settlement and the construction of commercial networks stretching across much of the planet, men and women across a wide spectrum of ethnicities, social standings and occupations fashioned their garments from materials old and new, familiar and strange, and novel meanings came to be attached to different fabrics and modes of dress. Political Economies of Empire in the Early Modern Mediterranean The Decline of Venice and the Rise of England 1450–1700 Maria Fusaro University of Exeter
This exploration of the commercial relationship between Venice and England sets their comparative history in a wider Mediterranean and European context. It shows how Venice’s circumstances shaped the English mercantile community and how their contrasting fortunes can be seen as the beginnings of European protoglobalisation. ‘Two empires, Venice already old and past its peak, England adolescent and ambitious, met in mingled rivalry and co-operation in the early modern Eastern Mediterranean. English-speaking historians have long regarded the Venetian Empire as a maritime empire prefiguring the British Empire, but their view of Venice and its transactions with England has generally been based on English sources. Cotton The Fabric that Made the Modern World Giorgio Riello University of Warwick
Today’s world textile and garment trade is valued at a staggering $425 billion. We are told that under the pressure of increasing globalisation, it is India and China that are the new world manufacturing powerhouses. However, this is not a new phenomenon: until the industrial revolution, Asia manufactured great quantities of colourful printed cottons that were sold to places as far afield as Japan, West Africa and Europe. Cotton explores this earlier globalised economy and its transformation after 1750 as cotton led the way in the industrialisation of Europe. By the early nineteenth century, India, China and the Ottoman Empire switched from world producers to buyers of European cotton textiles, a position that they retained for over two hundred years. This is a fascinating and insightful story which ranges from Asian and European technologies and African slavery to cotton plantations in the Americas and consumer desires across the globe. ‘… a remarkable volume full of insight and originality … Riello deserves a wide audience and the book will be of interest to a readership well beyond the audience for world economic history, including cultural and social history, the histories of art, design, fashion and, of course, textiles themselves.’ Reviews in History (history.ac.uk/reviews) 2015 247 x 174 mm 436pp 103 b/w illus. 46 colour illus. 10 maps 12 tables 978-0-521-16670-6 Paperback £16.99 / US$22.99 For all formats available, see

A Concise History of International Finance From Babylon to Bernanke Larry Neal University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
A comprehensive survey of international financial history across three thousand years. Larry Neal discusses past crises, both historically and internationally, in order to show how many of them have been successfully overcome in ways that might be adapted to deal with the crises of 2007 to 2010. ‘This is the most impressive, most comprehensive, and most up-to-date single volume history of finance there is. Its central argument about the beneficial effects of financial innovation – along with the many cautionary tales of how and why things go sour, of the consequences of adequate mechanisms for ensuring commitment and responsibility – make it at once a classic, whose influence will endure a long time.’ Harold James, author of The End of Globalization: Lessons from the Great Depression
