Reclaiming Development in the World Trading System Second edition Yong-Shik Lee

University of Berne

The Law and Development Institute, Atlanta

Professor William Davey

Providing extensive coverage of international trade law from an economic development perspective, this second edition of Reclaiming Development in the World Trading System lends insight into these topics with case analysis exemplifying how our trading systems have been adopted by the developing world in order to foster their own economic development.

University of Illinois

As the processes of regionalisation and globalisation have intensified, there have been accompanying increases in the regulation of international trade and economic law at the levels of international, regional and national laws. The subject matter of this series is international economic law. Its core will be the regulation of international trade, investment and cognate areas, such as intellectual property and competition policy. The series publishes books on related regulatory areas, in particular human rights, labour, environment and culture, as well as sustainable development. These areas are vertically linked at the international, regional and national level, and the series extends to the implementation of these rules at these different levels. The series also includes works on governance, dealing with the structure and operation of related international organisations in the field of international economic law, and the way they interact with other subjects of international and national law.

Advance praise: ‘In this second edition, Professor Lee once again addresses the shortcomings of the WTO’s regulatory framework for developing countries and the corresponding shortcomings of the WTO system as a positive force for economic development. The issuance of this broader work is particularly timely. It has become increasingly clear that the WTO’s ‘Doha Development Round’ has failed. With it has gone much of the hope that more of the positive impacts of liberalized world trade would benefit the dozens of smaller developing countries that have had little influence on fourteen years of largely unsuccessful negotiations. Under these circumstances the need for an updated study of international trade law from [the] perspective of economic development is greater than ever … The process of successfully bringing about economic development through trade all too often continues to mystify; Professor Lee’s book will assist readers from all disciplines in better understanding this critically important relationship.’ David A. The Law, Economics and Politics of International Standardisation

Converging Systems

Jürgen Kurtz

Edited by Panagiotis Delimatsis

University of Melbourne

Universiteit van Tilburg, The Netherlands

Jürgen Kurtz addresses the growing connections between international trade and investment law, proposing a theoretically grounded and doctrinally tractable framework to understand the deepening relationship between them. This book also offers reform ideas and possibilities, which will be of interest to treaty negotiators and other government officials. ‘Professor Kurtz’s book is a stimulating and evocative treatment of a field of contemporary and growing importance. His thorough scholarship impresses, and his analysis and insight both inform and challenge. This is a very important work.’ Donald McRae, Jerusalem Review of Legal Studies Cambridge International Trade and Economic Law, 20

Featuring an empirically based approach, this book offers a multidisciplinary analysis on the foundations of international standard-setting. Contributors expertly examine the peculiarities of international standardisation and shed light on the attributes of international standardsetters, allowing comparisons among standard-setting bodies and identifying best practices to improve our understanding about standardisation processes. These essays pay tribute to M. Sornarajah, Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore. The book surveys issues and themes connected with scholarly resistance to a neo-liberal perspective. It offers an account of the current backlash against investment treaties and investment arbitration in various countries.

This book discusses a broad range of legal regimes, looking at emerging issues facing the international economic law system after the global financial crisis. It demonstrates that this has essentially been a fragmented and multi-focal system of international economic regulation.

Interpreting WTO Agreements Problems and Perspectives

Second edition Asif H. Qureshi Korea University, Seoul

Qureshi identifies the underlying problems of interpreting WTO agreements, and examines the conditions for the interpretation of these agreements. This second edition addresses the legislative developments and updates the case law. Also included is a new section on issues of interpretation relating to preferential trade agreements and the WTO. ‘Written with clarity and precision by one of the world’s foremost international trade law scholars, the second edition provides even broader and deeper insights than its predecessor into the interpretation of WTO texts. Special virtues of this edition include great care paid to the impact on poor countries of WTO adjudications, and placement of those outcomes in wider economic and political contexts. Students, scholars, and practitioners will find time spent with this new edition both enlightening and productive.’ Raj Bhala, Associate Dean for International and Comparative Law, and Rice Distinguished Professor, University of Kansas 2015 228 x 152 mm 476pp 1 table 978-1-107-04329-9 Hardback £82.00 / US$134.00 For all formats available, see

World Trade Review The World Trade Review was established at the initiative of

the Secretariat of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in close cooperation with Cambridge University Press.

It is an independent journal – the Editor and all but one member of the Editorial Board are drawn from university faculties – that

includes articles written from economic, legal, political and inter-

disciplinary perspectives on issues of relevance to the multilateral trading system. Priority is given to papers that, along with being academically rigorous, are also accessible to government policy officials and the wider public.

The journal also includes shorter articles seeking to rebut or challenge published papers.
