What’s new in this series?

Essential Mathematics CORE for the Victorian Curriculum Years 7–10 provides a practical interpretation of the Victorian Curriculum to help students meet the minimum requirements of the Achievement Standards.

Combining a proven teaching and learning formula with innovative digital capabilities, Essential Mathematics CORE encourages students who require additional support in mathematics to master the basics of applied mathematics in everyday life and in the workplace.

Revised ‘Understanding’ questions

New Pre-tests

‘Understanding’ questions have been revised to be more closely linked to the ‘Key Ideas’ section to promote class discussion and to help consolidate the fundamental skills and concepts needed for the topic.

A new Diagnostic Pre-test in the Interactive Textbook for each chapter can be used to test students on the content before the topic has started and can be re-done later to assess progress. This is in addition to the existing Pre-test that assesses prior knowledge.

‘Now You Try’ questions for every worked example Questions without worked solutions have been added to every worked example. These additional questions give students immediate practice at the same type of question covered in the worked example before completing equivalent exercise questions. ‘Now You Try’ questions also provide teachers with extra material to demonstrate questions in the same style as the worked example, without students having seen the solution beforehand.

Tools to help students keep track of their progress ‘Learning Intentions’ at the beginning of each lesson clearly state what the student can expect to learn in the lesson. A checklist of success criteria, complete with short example questions, is then provided at the end of every chapter to assist students with keeping track of their progress, and as a form of quick revision.

Approach to algorithmic thinking Essential Mathematics CORE for the Victorian Curriculum includes an introduction to algorithmic thinking at every year level in a highly teachable, activity-based chapter designed to apply algorithmic thinking to all strands of the curriculum.

A practical interpretation of the proficiency strands

The sequencing of topics throughout the textbook for each year level encourages deep understanding, reduces lesson planning time, and allows the teaching program to be built around the textbook. Logical topic development is supported by carefully graded questions, linked examples, investigations and key point summaries in an uncluttered layout.

Our highly regarded interpretation of the Victorian Curriculum proficiency strands supports precise grading of questions and consistent depth across all topics in the curriculum.

Every question is grouped according to the four proficiency strands and every lesson contains questions for all four strands.

Supports differentiated learning

Develops vital literacy skills in mathematics

Two separate working programs are subtly embedded in every exercise in the student text, offering ‘Building’ and ‘Progressing’ pathways throughout the text. Within chapters, revision (Consolidating) and extension (Gold Star) sections are clearly signposted to make it easier for teachers to prioritise particular topics in each chapter to suit their students’ needs and goals.

A range of features are included to develop vital literacy skills in mathematics such as pop-up definitions (with illustrations, examples and audio pronunciation for all key terms), dragand-drop and fill-the-gap literacy-based activities within the Interactive Textbook, and maths literacy worksheets in the Online Teaching Suite for use in the classroom or as homework.

The Interactive Textbook powered by Cambridge HOTmaths The online version of the student text delivers a host of interactive features to enhance the teaching and learning experience, and when connected to a class teacher account offers a powerful Learning Management System (LMS). It is accessed online through a Cambridge GO account using a unique 16-character code provided with the Print Textbook, or available for purchase separately as a digital-only option.

Interactive features •

Workspaces allows students to enter their working for all exercises directly into the Interactive Textbook. Answers can be typed, hand-written or uploaded on a computer or tablet device. Students can then check their answers, self-assess their working using a four-point scale, and use a red flag to alert their teacher if they had trouble with a question. This encourages students to develop responsibility for their learning and effectively communicates their performance to the teacher.

The Online Teaching Suite The Online Teaching Suite combines the Interactive Textbook powered by Cambridge HOTmaths and its rich digital resources with a suite of supplementary resources and a powerful Learning Management System (LMS). It is accessed through a Cambridge GO teacher account. Your Cambridge Education Resource Consultant will provide access to the Online Teaching Suite if your school has purchased or booklisted one or more year levels. It is also available for purchase separately.

Access to student Workspaces entries allows for efficient and time-saving monitoring of work and provides students with the opportunity to alert teachers to problems with specific questions. Teachers can also provide feedback to individuals on specific questions.

The Task Manager function can be used to create a Quick task, a Directed task or a task Template. The Directed task option allows teachers to set an achievement benchmark for measurable activities that directs students on an activity sequence appropriate to their score. Templates for task sequences can be created and applied across a number of chapters and multiple classes, saving teachers time in allocating activities.

Authors David Greenwood

Jenny Goodman

is the Head of Mathematics at Trinity Grammar School in Melbourne and has 25+ years’ experience teaching mathematics from Years 7 to 12. He has run numerous workshops within Australia and overseas regarding the implementation of the Victorian Curriculum and the use of technology for the teaching of mathematics. He has written more than 30 mathematics titles and has a particular interest in the sequencing of curriculum content and working with the Australian Curriculum proficiency strands.

has taught in schools for over 25 years and is currently teaching at a selective high school in Sydney. Jenny has an interest in the importance of literacy in mathematics education, and in teaching students of differing ability levels. She was awarded the Jones Medal for Education at Sydney University and the Bourke Prize for Mathematics.

Bryn Humberstone graduated from the University of Melbourne with an Honours degree in Pure Mathematics, and has taught secondary school mathematics for over 15 years. He has been a Head of Mathematics since 2014 at two independent schools in Victoria. Bryn is particularly passionate about designing engaging mathematical activities and effective assessment tasks for students with a variety of backgrounds and ability levels.

Sara Woolley completed an Honours degree in Mathematics at the University of Tasmania before completing her education training at the University of Melbourne. She has taught mathematics in Victoria from Years 7 to 12 since 2006 and is currently a Head of Mathematics. She has written more than 15 mathematics titles and specialises in lesson design and differentiation.

J e n n i f e r Va u g h a n has taught secondary mathematics for over 30 years in New South Wales, Western Australia, Queensland and New Zealand and has tutored and lectured in mathematics at Queensland University of Technology. She is passionate about providing students of all ability levels with opportunities to understand and to have success in using mathematics. She has extensive experience in developing resources that make mathematical concepts more accessible, to develop student confidence, achievement and an enjoyment of maths.

Stuart Palmer has been a head of department in two schools and is now an educational consultant who conducts professional development workshops for teachers all over NSW and beyond. He has been a Project Officer with the Mathematical Association of New South Wales, and also works with preservice teachers at the University of Sydney and the University of Western Sydney.

Justin Robinson is the inaugural Director of the Institute of Positive Education, based at Geelong Grammar School, where he leads a team of staff dedicated to promoting the theory and practice of Positive Education. Prior to this, he spent 20 years teaching mathematics, covering all levels of secondary education and with significant experience teaching VCE, IB and A-Levels.

Justin is passionate about challenging students within a safe learning environment. Justin is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education, and was listed in The Educator’s 2017 ‘Top 50’ Hot List.
