The core of each of these sports is to introduce first time athletes to competition, develop required skills, and prepare them for the next level of competition. YOUTH CENTER

The Cambridge CAP Youth Center is housed in the Nikolay Middle School and offers children in grades 5-8 a free, safe, and positive environment. Dream Big Campaign The dream big campaign started when students were asked “What does your Youth Center Look Like?” Responses ranged from easy obtainable items, to the weird and untouchable, and even the next to impossible. Dreaming however, is essential to the development of the human mind and spirit. It’s what kids do, and what makes them reach for the stars. It only made sense that we lead our students through this campaign in believing that nothing is ever impossible as long as you dream big. In this evolutionary process with the help of students, parents, and other stakeholders our goal is to identify needs and trends with today’s youth in order to improve services offered. Our outcome is to develop funds that will allow us to improve the Cambridge Area Youth Center to be more functional, collaborative, and inviting for kids in the community today, tomorrow, and beyond. The Youth Center relies heavily on donations, fundraising efforts and grants. This year the fundraising focus was on the Dream Big Campaign. A huge thank you goes out to the United Way & Dane County for their continued support of the Youth Center!

By the numbers... 2018 attendance of children in safe, enriching summer and after school care: 9391

Day Camp The Day Camp program continues to remain successful. We have continued to have increased interest from families who do not attend CAP CARE during the school year. Recognizing that this may put an extra burden on our current families, we created a new policy to accommodate them. This policy allows them to turn in their calendars early with a credit card on file. Their card wouldn’t be charged until the week that the calendar was due but gives them the peace of mind knowing that they have care for the summer. Foundation Grant CAP CARE received a grant from the Cambridge Foundation to purchase 4 new bicycles and helmets. In the past CAP CARE has offered biking on Camrock trails for older friends during the summer. Those who wanted to participate needed to provide their own bike. We found that some kids wanted to participate but did not have a bike. Additionally, CAP CARE realized that many of the younger friends were missing out on this very beneficial activity. These new bikes for all age levels, provided by the Cambridge Foundation, will fill both of those needs as well as allowing CAP CARE to focus on being a play based learning center.

In August, CAP CARE switched to a web-based program, Smartcare, for child scheduling, reporting and communicating with parents. This allowed us to be more connected and interactive with parents, sending them updates about their children throughout the day.

2018 Youngstar Evaluation In October, CAP CARE was rated again for Youngstar. During the evaluation we scored an overall score of 6.08 out of 7.0 for our School age care environment rating scale. This evaluation included observing our space and furnishings, health and safety, activities, interactions, and program structure.

Family Fun CAP CARE continues to provide family outreach opportunities for families. In 2018 our families participated in the CAP CARE bake sale, Lake Ripley Ride, Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, and hosted the Hero Dance.

Greetings from the Director One of the goals that the Cambridge Community Activities Program had in 2018 was to focus on telling our story. This could be through pictures, making memories and even through numbers. Accordingly, CAP focused on data collection throughout the year. One number that is remarkable to me is 81,495, which is the number of times individuals participated in a CAP activity in 2018! I am extremely proud of that number, as it represents the hard work, dedication, and impact we have on our small community. 81,495 times individuals stepped through the doors of the school, onto a field, into the food pantry, on the pool deck, into the youth center, in our child care center or at a special event. That number changes lives and helps keep our children, families and loved ones healthy. CAP also hit a huge milestone this year in celebrating its 15 year anniversary. Back in 2003, CAP was run by a single individual alongside of a very insightful board of directors. In 2018, CAP employed 113 part time/seasonal staff! CAP is proud to be one of the largest employers in Cambridge and especially lucky to provide many young students with their first job. CAP will continue to grow and focus on the needs of this community. We are very lucky to be surrounded by such giving volunteers and staff, while being allowed to work within an amazing school district. Thank you for your continued support and we are looking forward to 2019! Lesli Rumpf, CPRP, AFO Executive Director
