PRINTMAKING

INTRO TO INTAGLIO / DRYPOINT PRINTMAKING

Louis Meola | Artist Intaglio printing means printing ink from the incised marks in a plate or matrix. This is a course for beginning students seeking thorough exposure to intaglio printmaking without any of the nasty chemicals. We will give special attention to a broad array of intaglio applications: drypoint, found objects, collage, and monoprint techniques. The intaglio line is like no other in the sense that it becomes embedded in the fibers of the soaked paper. The end result is a deep, rich, and unique mark.

INTRODUCTION TO RELIEF PRINTMAKING

Laura Sheffield | Artist

Explore the varied styles of relief printmaking in three sessions, focusing on linoleum cut (linocut) with detours into printing with found objects, recyclables, and traditional woodcuts. This form of printmaking, an ancient craft with modern practitioners, will help you learn (or refine) your skills in design as well as image-making, and leave you with a portable printmaking skill! We will look at contemporary and historical art for inspiration, learn block-cutting techniques, and print on a variety of papers. In the final session, we will also try altering our prints, or using them in collage. Relief printing can be pursued on a small (or very large) scale and is a technique you can continue in your home studio or on your kitchen table. Our printmaking space at CCAE is spacious and has many of the tools you need. A list of materials will be provided to students.

MONOTYPE PRINTMAKING THREE WAYS:

INSPIRATION AND BASIC TECHNIQUES

Susan Rice and Laura Sheffield | Artists

Practice one of the most instantly-rewarding forms of printmaking: monotypes! The first session will feature reduction monotypes, the use of monotype base, watercolor and water-soluble crayons, and the qualities of various printmaking papers. In the second session, we will experiment with stencils, masks, and trace transfer monotypes. You can combine these methods and others to create unique prints, employing multiple pressings to build up layers on the same print. For the third session, we will try chine collé, a form of collage, using lightweight papers and the press to add richness, texture, and layers to your images. This class will include time to finish projects and discuss how monotype printmaking can be continued at home without a press. Our studio uses exclusively non-toxic materials and some tools and supplies are provided or can be purchased on-site from CCAE. A list of supplies and resources will be provided to enrolled students. Longtime CCAE printmaking teacher Selma Bromberg will be a visiting artist at the final session, showing her recent work.
