BEGINNER DRAWING

Students will begin by learning how to accurately measure and observe objects and the world around us . Classes will include instructor demonstrations and exercises in contour drawing, tonal drawing, and gesture drawing with plenty of time to practice in class and receive feedback from the instructor .

BEGINNER DRAWING: LEVEL 2

Jeremy Durling | Artist, jeremydurling.com In this continuation of Beginner Drawing, students work with more complex subjects and new perspectives to build their observational drawing skills . We will cover perspective in larger and more complex spaces, putting figures into the context of these spaces, as well as exploring new drawing materials . Students should have taken Beginner Drawing at CCAE or an equivalent class prior to enrolling .

CONTINUING DRAWING: COLOR & COLLAGE

This class will build on the principles of Beginner Drawing . In this class, we will use different media (including charcoal, collage and colored pencil) to study light, form and color, both in the still life and the human figure. Prior observational drawing experience is highly recommended.

METAMORPHIC DRAWING

Experiment with wet and dry media on paper while challenging form, shape, composition, and special relationships . Demonstrations, critiques, and virtual gallery visits bring your work to a more intriguing level . This class is designed for students that want to continue to refine their skills in the medium and refresh their understanding of concepts. The first half of this class focuses on drawing and moves into wet mediums of the students’ choice.

DRAWING WITH COLOR

Ellen Stutman | Artist, ellenstutman.com We usually think of drawing with lines. In this class, we’ll focus on color shapes to help us understand and draw what we see . We will learn about color mixing, using warm and cool colors to create volume, separating objects, and creating space by showing differences in value and issues of composition. We’ll concentrate on the strength that color gives to our drawing, using your choice of pastels, oil pastels, or colored pencils . Some drawing experience is useful but not necessary .

SKETCHBOOK SERIES

While your surroundings may seem claustrophobic from being indoors during this time, that just means you might need a different point of view. In this class we will discuss different drawing techniques and how to look at our surroundings in new and interesting perspectives . Elements of composition, line quality and some playfulness will combine to bring out the “reclusive artist” in you .

ANATOMY FOR ARTISTS

The ability to draw, paint or sculpt the human form is greatly enhanced if the artist truly understands the anatomic structures under the skin that produce the form . We will utilize a skeleton and anatomy atlases to learn about skeletal elements, deep and superficial muscle layers, and vasculature. We will set up poses with a live model and apply what we’ve learned. Prior drawing experience is strongly recommended, particularly from a live model .

DRAWING AND PAINTING CAT AND DOG PORTRAITS

Portrait drawing and painting enhances and supports deep seeing into another living being. This process bridges our differences and can create enhanced intimacy with non-human species . In this class, we will focus on painting and drawing portraits of special cats and dogs in our lives, so we will celebrate their faces and names to help tell their stories whether they are still with us or passed on . We will also create a Facebook group and have an online exhibit of our works .

DRAWING AND PAINTING IMPORTANT HISTORICAL WOMEN & PEOPLE OF COLOR

Learn about iconic figures by painting their faces! In this class, we will work primarily in pencil and watercolors, creating images both of known faces like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Mahatma Gandhi, and also lesser-known visages like Medger Evers, Rachel Carson, Kalpana Chawla, and Sonia Sotomayor. (Students will vote on the selections in the first class.) Discussions about their contributions will be part of the curriculum .

BEGINNER OIL PAINTING

BEGINNER LANDSCAPE PAINTING

Jeremy Durling | Artist, jeremydurling.com This course will cover the essential aspects of landscape painting from observation, beginning over Zoom to discuss what to bring and how to set up, and moving outdoors to practice simplifying this complex subject in the open air . This could be a great introduction to landscape for the beginner, or a refreshing warmup for the rusty plein air painter preparing for the warmer seasons . Topics covered include: setting up, beginning a painting, composition, mixing color, creating space, and capturing light . Students are asked to bring materials (paints, brushes, portable easel, canvas) as well as a mask . This course will practice safe social distancing .

PAINTING ABSTRACT ART: ALL LEVELS

Abstract art covers a vast amount of different art making styles and strategies . This mixed-level class will help you focus in on the wide world of abstract painting and allow you to practice examining, discussing, and creating your own abstract artworks . Each class will introduce you to a particular style and you’ll also view famous historical or contemporary works . Classes will also cover basic acrylic techniques. There are many different ways to think of and paint an abstract picture, so this class will begin with exercises based around shape, color, and composition . More advanced students will be guided on independent projects .

MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE

Collage is one of the most accessible and freeing artistic mediums . With a creative eye, nearly anything in your home can become a material for expression . In this class, we will look to collage artists throughout history and the world around us for inspiration . Through in-class demonstrations, students will learn a myriad of collage techniques, including cut-paper, 3-D collage, and creating collagraphs for press-free printmaking .

NATURE JOURNALING

Add art to your daily walks with this new class exploring the beauty in the details of the plants and insects in your neighborhood. This class will cover basic identification for flowers that you can find on your block and in local parks, and will teach observational drawing and journaling . Learn how to use a combination of watercolors and pen and ink drawing to capture the small and dynamic changes in your world .

MODERN CALLIGRAPHY AND ARTISTIC LETTERING

Using brush pens and other writing tools, we will cover lettering drills, letter practice worksheets, and quote composition, all while experimenting with new fun fonts and styles . By the end of the class, you will feel comfortable turning your writing into beautiful art—perfect for invitations, home decor, or gifts! No prior calligraphy experience or perfect handwriting needed!

MINDFULNESS AND CREATIVITY

Jhilam Sanyal | Artist Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life .” Art and creativity as a practice of coping with stress and creating more happiness in our lives is accessible to all regardless of skill or experience . In this course, we will learn multiple forms of creative activities for relaxation, dealing with emotions, and expressing gratitude . Exercises will focus on art and creativity as a process, rather than a finished product or the technical aspects of art . We will engage in multiple forms of creativity such as drawing, painting, collage, mandalas, and journaling . No art experience required .

MINDFULNESS AND INTUITIVE ART

Jhilam Sanyal | Artist Art as a mindfulness practice and the act of intuitively painting or drawing is a practice accessible to all regardless of art experience or skill . This class will introduce mindfulness practices utilizing art for stress relief, establishing a connection with your heart and innate creativity, and incorporating creative practice into your daily life . The class will focus on mindfulness and art as process rather than a finished product or the technical aspects of art. Activities will include guided meditations and instructor led exercises to aid the student in discovering their own, unique natural creativity . Students will also have the opportunity to use their own art supplies and experiment with mediums of their choice . No art experience required .

OPEN STUDIO FOR PRINTMAKING AND WATER-BASED MEDIA

Work independently in our studio with its medium-sized (24”x 42”) press and ample work space for projects . Cleanup supplies and tools are provided, but please bring your own water-based inks, paper and other materials . Open Studio is best suited to students with printmaking experience . A printmaking monitor/assistant teacher will be available for consultation, advice, and help with the press . We look forward to working in the printmaking studio again with you!
