an update from
the President May sees the Chamber heating up in it’s quest to resource our businesses with technology solutions potentially enabling Cambridge to be the most digitally advanced SME town in NZ. The Waikato already commands a strong reputation and in 2018 the Hamilton technology sector was the top growth region in New Zealand with a 16.3% growth Revenue growth was by $119 million to total $0.854 billion! Techweek ’19 is being led by Te Waka, Waikato’s regional economic development agency, in partnership with CultivateIT with events taking place across the region. The Cambridge Business Chamber is facilitating a locally based event to inspire and engage attendees from regional Waikato as part of the Techweek19 Waikato festival of innovation. This breakfast event is designed to inspire and support the building of regional capacity, providing an opportunity for the local Cambridge community to connect and hear from industry-leading, technology and innovation speakers, including Gallaghers, the NZ National Fieldays Society and RocketSpark. There will also be loads of time for networking and to find out more about what is in the pipeline around technology and innovation across the Waikato and in Cambridge. In pursuit of supporting our SME’s, the Chamber will be launching a new genre of event titled "Lunch & Learn's" introducing them to the various tools that enhance efficiency. This is currently in development with the above-mentioned agency, Rocketspark and Meraki so watch this space. Great sessions for those wanting to learn and activate greater digital capabilities. Exciting times!

CEO’s Message
The Waikato and the Waipa region is an increasingly multi-cultural society. Every year, we’re welcoming new residents from all around the world, and that’s reflected in the cultural and ethnic diversity of individuals and families we see at our New Zealand citizenship ceremonies. Language and cultural differences can mean settling in can be a challenge and may take some time. As we become a more multicultural society – and embrace what that means for us. As residents and employers, we need an understanding of the cultural, ethnic and religious differences among our city’s residents – and how we can respect and appreciate those. A consistent theme I’ve heard and read in response to the tragedy in Christchurch is the importance of getting to know the people around us. Here at the Chamber, we had a conversation about ways to connect with people in a business context that you may be interested in. It might be as simple as being able to invite a non member of a different culture to come to a Chamber event. We welcome diversity and new friends at the Chamber. Perhaps you could consider becoming a Volunteer? There are so many fun opportunities for volunteering within Cambridge across diverse groups and demographics. As we shop locally, supporting our business colleagues, perhaps just strike up a conversation. Get to know the shopkeepers name… Wherever you happen to be — in line at the post office, at the grocery store, or at a cafe, start a conversation with someone around you. It might be uncomfortable at first, but if the other person is friendly and responsive, it might be the beginning of an interesting connection. Join a charity. Do you have a cause that's particularly meaningful to you? If so, get really involved by becoming a committee member or key player for the organisation.
4 / chamber news / AUTUMN 2019
As a leader/decision-maker in the non-profit world, you'll be exposed to a variety of interesting people who support your cause. Join our book club. If you love books, a book club is a wonderful way to meet new people with a similar interest. We meet once a month – come along! If you practice some of these ideas for meeting new people and networking in general, remember that you'll have to push through some discomfort as you put yourself out there. You'll need to step up and introduce yourself, initiate a conversation, or suggest meeting up, and even so, it may take some time to discover your tribe of new friends who feel comfortable and supportive. You can't develop a friendship with someone unless you go through the “developing” stage, which can be a little stiff and awkward at first. Building trust, closeness, and camaraderie will be a work in progress, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a great social life in the meantime. The more you put yourself in social settings, the better the odds are that you'll meet interesting, fun new people and create useful connections. Step outside your comfort zone – think outside the box and don’t underestimate the power of community! “If you build a wall to separate people, there will be those who find a way around the wall, or over it, or under it, or through it. We humans are not meant to be contained, and neither are our thoughts.” ― Teresa R. Funke, Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life blog

R & D everyday? ~ By Susanne Lorenz, Meraki Workspace ~ To be brutally honest, the topic of Research and Development of this issue felt a wee bit (ok a lot) daunting at first. I wasn’t quite sure, what we as a Coworking space could provide around that topic that would be of value to readers. But then I started thinking about it. I started thinking about our members and what they do. The businesses they run and the people they are. I started thinking about us as a business and as the people that stand behind it. I came to a realisation. We might not fall into the typical R&D industries, we might not qualify for some of the wonderful grants that are available if we would actually be considered a R&D business BUT: We all are doing Research and Development every single day that we are in business. Every one of us. We are researching and discovering something new about our customers and clients every day. We are developing new products and services every day. We are evolving as individuals, as business owners, as managers every single day. We are learning new ways of doing business and succeeding in life. Chasing that dream, working towards that goal. Achieving it, reaching it, celebrating it (maybe) and then looking further beyond “the edge of the plate”. To do this we constantly have to think a little bit “outside the square”. We have to question the status quo; the way things are being done and have been done in the past. We have to question ourselves and the people around us, practice critical thinking all the time. Assess what we have and wonder if there is another way. Today I’d like to challenge you to also think outside the square but since I’m convinced you are subconsciously already doing it anyway, I’d like to invite you to do it with more awareness and see what great things will come from it.

could be holding back the Waikato economy ~ By Kate Bellis, Profinance ~ WITH ECONOMIC COMMENTATORS FORECASTING THAT BY 2025, 50% OF ALL NZ’S GDP WILL COME OUT OF THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE, THE FUTURE IS LOOKING BRIGHT FOR WAIKATO BUSINESS GROWTH. ACCESS TO CAPITAL IS KEY TO ENABLING GROWTH, BUT WITH “STRESS TESTED” BUSINESS INTEREST RATES RISING IN THE FIRST QUARTER THIS YEAR, SECURING FINANCE TO REALISE THE GROWTH POTENTIAL MAY BE ABOUT TO GET EVEN HARDER. What many business owners are unaware of when applying for funding with banks, is that often a ‘stress tested’ interest rate is applied when considering applications. Stress tested interest rates are above market interest rates and in some cases up to 7.8% meaning that while businesses own lending calculations make financial sense, in the Banks calculations, they potentially don’t. Quentin Glover, Director of Profinance in Cambridge says it’s an interesting dynamic in the market, particularly in light of economic growth forecasts. “If the Reserve Bank tries to stimulate the economy, but the Banks are operating their own independent models, there’s a chance that nothing could happen. The Reserve Bank could rev the engine all it wants, but the car might not go anywhere.” The stress-tested interest rate model was established following the Reserve Bank’s introduction of the Responsible Lending Code in 2015, on the back of the global financial crisis. One purpose of the Code was to stop targeted and predatory lending undertaken by 2nd and 3rd tier lending companies. While the Code stated all lenders must operate with skill, care & diligence, it did not offer a prescription to lenders as to what that might look like. As a result, banks have developed their own models. “It makes sense that Banks do use a higher Interest rate than the current market rates – interest rates are currently at their lowest since world war 2 and its logical that rates will increase at some stage” said Glover.
As well as looking to banks, Glover says there are often more options available to business owners than they realise. “The challenge is finding those options and knowing how to make them work. In the Business market all lenders are different and want different things, it’s about understanding what you bring to the table and how to use that to get what you need from the lender” he said. “Lenders are busy, so for the best chance of success, it’s about presenting information concisely, and in a way that lenders understand and can process efficiently”. In the past 12 months Profinance has successfully secured finance for the majority of its clients, and with a client base of predominantly Waikato businesses, that’s an endorsement that local businesses are stepping up to maximize the forecast growth opportunities. “Despite the challenges many of our clients have faced with the mainstream lending model, we’re finding a way through, and from what we can see, we’re confident that the regional growth will happen – it may just take a bit of looking outside the box to get businesses the support they need to kick into that next gear” he said.
Based in Cambridge, Profinance is a leading broker of finance, loans and mortgages for business owners and self-employed. Director Quentin Glover has more than 25 years experience in business banking and finance.

What's your
Leadership Blindspot? ~ By Kate Ricketts, Jigsaw Professional Development ~ GOOD LEADERS DEVELOP SOLID LEADERSHIP SKILLS BUT GREAT LEADERS ALSO CONSTANTLY REVIEW HOW THEY MIGHT NEED TO FLEX OR IMPROVE THEM IN ORDER TO MEET THEIR TEAM’S NEEDS. IN FACT THERE MAY BE AREAS OF YOUR LEADERSHIP THAT ARE FRUSTRATING YOUR TEAM WHICH YOU ARE NOT EVEN CONSCIOUS OF, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS A LEADERSHIP ‘BLIND SPOT’.
Commonly ‘blind’ behaviours to look out for include: Indecision You may see it as taking solid time to weigh up all the options, however too long a delay can demotivate your team and drive them crazy. Make sure you have a process to ensure decisions get made quickly and regularly (yes even the big ones). Quick-fire Decisions On the other hand making snap decisions without input from others can be just as frustrating to people. By asking your team for their opinions you are a) increasing the chances of finding that perfect solution and b) heightening their confidence in your final decision.
Losing track of what’s going on around you Keeping your head in the strategic clouds for too long can lead to weaknesses with powerful consequences, whether it be making assumptions as to what staff are finding rewarding and challenging or underestimating competitors. Invest the time to find out and reward yourself by making informed and solid decisions as a leader. Leadership is not a stationary skill so even the most practiced leaders need to regularly check in on themselves and their self-awareness. Looking for recurring past issues can help identify any potential blind spots or if you would like something more formal feel free to contact us at info@ jpd.co.nz for a copy of a Leadership Blind Spot assessment.

~ By LesleyAnn Thomas, People in Mind Ltd ~ RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT - IT’S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT IT’S HARD TO TRY AND DESCRIBE HOW IT FITS INTO OUR HR BUSINESS. Do we even do R&D? I can’t get the image out of my head of R&D teams of engineers or scientists in white coats, working away in labs designing and testing new products. We definitely don’t do that. So, what is it that we do? As an owner/operator of a small business, one of the drivers in my business is innovation - we need to be innovating, adapting and making changes to our services to ensure we continue to meet our clients’ needs, and to keep the business on track for the long-term. To feed into that innovation we need good research. Research is important in HR because the employment landscape is forever changing - some of the biggies that affect our industry are the employment legislation changes, the changing workforce profile and, who can forget, technology changes and challenges (social media, vaping for starters). It’s fair to say we do some of our research without even realising. Keeping a finger on the pulse to spot trends and changes, being part of business groups and hearing what business owners want from their HR Advisor, talking with our clients and keeping an eye on the competitive scene - these are all things we do on a regular basis. Then there’s the meaty research – where is technology taking the industry and what do we need to do to keep up? What do legislation changes mean for our clients and our services, and what specific industry research can help us in our work? This research helps guide us in planning what we offer our clients in terms of the advice we give, new or improved services, systems or processes; and how and when we offer them.
Research and development, R&D, innovation, whatever you call it, it’s a good thing. It feeds into our business and helps us get us to where we want to be.
Payroll needn’t be an uphill struggle Worried about the complexities of payroll, payday filing, the Holidays Act and simply keeping up with legislative changes? Have a chat with us about our payroll service. We take care of your payroll, so you and your staff can concentrate on your core business.

Research & Development thinking outside the box ~ By Grant Johnson, Rocketspark Co-founder ~ AT ROCKETSPARK WE WERE CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT AMOUNT OF BUSINESS IS GENERATED BY WORD OF MOUTH REFERRAL. When we surveyed New Zealand businesses 45% said that word of mouth referral was their main source of new business which was more than double the next largest source of referral. Based on our own experience we suspect in a connected town like Cambridge that this figure is much higher. The value of word of mouth referral is further supported by international researchers, Nielsen who reported that 92% of people trust a personal recommendation above all form of advertising. How can we think outside the box to generate and harness personal recommendations? Invite online reviews Researchers Nielsen reported that 70% of people trust online reviews and this has increased by 15% in the last 4 years. To increase your reviews you simply need to ask. We’ve got thousands of clients but we had few customer reviews until actively invited clients to provide a review. If you visit reviews of Rocketspark on software review sites such
10 / chamber news / AUTUMN 2019
as Capterra you’ll see that the messages around ease of use and great support are common themes with enough volume to be credible and the reviews align with key messages on our website which increases our credibility. Create testimonials and case studies We recently had a short video produced to tell the story of Rocketspark Design Partners who use Rocketspark to design websites for their clients. The video producer was so delighted by the stories that he has now signed up as a Rocketspark Partner. Even though he didn’t know the design partners interviewed he trusted the consistency of the messaging he was filming. Research conducted by online customer service experts, Synthetix, shows that 91% of consumers will check a business’s website before calling or emailing. The source of a visitor to your website is likely to have come from a personal referral and if you have some great video testimonials you can provide supporting personal referrals in a video form.
