I’ve been in my new role as President for nearly four months now, and the support I’ve received from my Executive Committee team and from members has been outstanding. I’ve spoken to quite a range of people over the last few months: my exec team, members, other Chambers of Commerce, members of the public. The conversations have helped to shape my thinking about the Cambridge Chamber. Recently I spoke with one of our life members, Barbara Taranaki. Barbara told me how, in the late 1980’s, a group of twelve local business people called a meeting to re-start the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, after a break of more than a decade. They believed that there was a need to “set our sights higher” and “build now for the future.” And over the 30 years or so since, the Cambridge Chamber has played an important part in shaping Cambridge into the thriving town it is today. In March i also met the CEOs of the Taranaki, Northland and Eastern BOP Chambers of Commerce. One thing that stood out in our conversation was the resourcing guideline that the American Chambers of Commerce use – 1 FTE staff member for every 100 members. Cambridge Chamber has just 1.5 FTE for our 270 members! We have been fortunate in having an excellent operational team, who continue to over deliver in every respect. However, to keep raising the bar, “build now for the future”, and ensure the vitality of our Chamber and our town, we must plan and resource our team appropriately. With this in mind, if you have ever wondered about sponsoring or partnering with the Chamber, I encourage you to contact Tania about the opportunities in our strategic partnership program.

CEO’s Message Chamber has come out of the gates at pace in 2017! We have been joined by more than 25 new members since January and have been actively seeking new strategic partners. Welcome Meraki Workspace, CSC Buying Group and ProFinance to our partner family! We continue to advocated for Cambridge business in areas such as improved safety and security, central business access, parking and signage. The Chamber made a comprehensive submission to the WDC Draft Annual Plan and will speak to this in early May. 2017’s First XV events have so far proved popular, bringing together our young professionals and, similarly, Optimum continues to evolve, morph and grow with a continuous flow of new home based business and entrepreneurs. Love Cambridge (Chamber’s retail group) continues to actively promote Cambridge’s shopping offer with excellent growth in its social media and website audiences. Phil MacKay has taken up the President’s role with passion and gusto and is well supported by our executive team, which currently has two working groups assigned to Membership (value, engagement, utilisation) and Cambridge Accessibility (parking). Any ideas or feedback for us about these topics or others are most welcome. Entries for the Waipa Networks 2017 Business Awards open 1 May with a launch event at Mystery Creek Events Centre on the 4th. Thank you to our strategic partners and our members for your continued support of the Chamber!

and reduce the risk of a fight ~ By LesleyAnn, People in Mind ~

So often I hear employers comment that the employee has all the rights and the employer has none. It’s a statement that bothers me because, more often than not, problems have arisen because the employer hasn’t managed the recruitment and on-boarding of their employee well, or set the standards and expectations and held the employee accountable to them.

6 / chamber news / APRIL - JULY 2017

topics

When the employer repeatedly fails to do these things, and they get to their tipping point, it becomes ugly. That’s when the rights tip in favour of the employee. So here’s my message – recruit, on-board, maintain and end the employment relationship well. Common concerns When we ask our clients whether they had any concerns during recruitment or the trial period, a significant number of our clients say: • There was something not quite right when I interviewed them; or • The referee made some negative comments but I just thought they were annoyed their employee was leaving; or • I didn’t do any reference checking; or • There were issues in the trial period but I thought they would get better. I am a strong believer in listening to your gut feeling. If something doesn’t feel right, then ask more questions! The gut feeling is only one tool though and doesn’t replace the need to be thorough in your employee recruitment and management processes. Recruiting There are some fundamental steps that are required. We should be following a structured recruitment process. We should be reference checking thoroughly and not just paying lip service to the process. And we should be making use of the trial period – it gives the employer a golden opportunity to exit an employee who doesn’t have the skills for the role, is not progressing as expected, or who is not a fit for the team and business.

to assess the competency and fit of our new hires, and it gives the employer the control to manage problems effectively and swiftly. Maintaining the employment relationship Equally important is to nip problems in the bud at any stage of the employment relationship. Don’t save up your gripes for a rainy day. Deal with problems straight away. It might be as simple as setting the right standard for how you expect the phone to be answered, or more complex like addressing a concern around an employee’s mood swings at work. Whatever it is, the sooner you address the concern, the more effective you will be at managing your team and the less likely you are to end up in an ugly employee versus employer situation. Ending the employment relationship There are lots of reasons the employment relationship ends retirement, the employee has moved to a new job or left to have a baby, or you might have had to terminate the employment relationship for other reasons. Whatever the reason, it shouldn’t mean you become nasty and bitter towards your now former employee. Let them go with dignity, farewell them properly and always be the bigger person.

On-boarding On-boarding an employee should take at least the full trial period. It’s not just about “Here’s your desk, this is how we transfer a call, and here’s the tearoom”. On-boarding provides a structure for the employee to engage with the job and understand what is required of them, and it allows you the opportunity to assess whether they’re worth keeping. It doesn’t have to be a complicated plan – a one-pager is what we use with most of our clients and it covers the first 89 days of employment, with regular check-ins along the way. The trial period was introduced to assist us as employers

Taking on the World ~ By David Slone, CSC Buying Group ~ I’VE NOTICED SOMETHING ABOUT BUSINESS IN CAMBRIDGE RECENTLY AND IT EXCITES ME. WE ALL KNOW THAT THE TOWN IS GROWING AND GROWING FAST BUT DESPITE THIS, WE ARE MORE THAN EVER A BUSINESS COMMUNITY. Our Chamber is to the fore of this activity, not only through regularly getting good attendances at its events but also with initiatives such as Optimum and 1st XV. The I-Site has become more prominent, BNI groups are going well and elite sport is providing so many new opportunities to leverage off similar organisations. We talk to each other about our businesses, we openly share information and happily lend a hand when needed. Sometimes it’s easy to look around and wonder what’s happened to our little town. So many new faces and so many new businesses. Busy streets and even traffic lights, we’ve come a long way from the days when the state highway went through the main street and we had sale yards down at Carters Flat. Often growth can lead to that big city feel where everyone looks after themselves and other businesses are simply classified as the competition.

I believe we’ve done the opposite and actually strengthened our community. This is why I’m excited. At CSC Buying Group our passion for supporting thriving communities has become our purpose, with “Building Richer Communities” our new mission statement. In an increasingly diverse digital world, we see this as more necessary now than ever before. Like any community, businesses need to support each other and play a part in sustaining that community. Buying local, employing locals and advocating for our local businesses should continue to be at the core of what we do. The question we should be asking now is “How can we take this further?” For me, it’s about ensuring that we continually expand the size of the pie, not compete for a larger piece of what is already there. We need to strive to earn business from outside of Cambridge, and

even from exporting for the ultimate ‘ outside’ money. There’s some great examples of this in Cambridge, some are very well known while others are quietly achieving well out of the limelight. We now need to grow the numbers doing this. Obviously business growth also leads to employment, meaning our town becomes far more economically sustainable, and let’s not forget the social benefits of full employment. Singly we may be small but by uniting and working together, we can get the scale to compete with the big city slickers – in their back yards. We all need to challenge ourselves and seek ways we can make this happen. Let’s talk unashamedly about Cambridge businesses taking on the world! Finally, as we start to enjoy the benefits of growth, let us never forget what makes us unique … the village that is a growing community.

retired? Being ‘retired’ is a total misnomer. At least for Chamber Life Member Peter Carr. Peter was interviewed by journalist Viv Posselt just over three years ago and - when responding to her ‘what now?’ question – stated that time with grandchildren, maximising use of his campervan and consuming good red wine were the key targets on the horizon. He will admit to meeting all three of those desires to a small degree. However, since the interview he has moved on to: • President and Board Chair of the New Zealand National Fieldays Society – the owners and operators of the $32 million asset-worth Mystery Creek • Board member of Karapiro Rowing Incorporated – the organisation that operates all major rowing regattas on Lake Karapiro • National Executive member of the Retirement Village Residents Association of New Zealand • Member of the Waikato District Health Board employment credentialing committee for senior medial officers

• And (unofficial) personal slave to the CEO of Cambridge Chamber of Commerce when she wants something done!! Sure some international travel has been slotted in between those paragraphs above – the sardine- can experience of long distance air travel now reducing he and Robyn to Australia last year (driving a campervan from Cairns to Brisbane) and Tahiti mid-winter this year (mainly beachside on Moorea). In 13 years, Cambridge has embraced the Carr family very well, and Peter is a firm believer in giving back to this lovely, enterprising, and growing town. Peter is firmly of the opinion that Cambridge succeeds mainly due to those who ‘give’ and do not seek any reward - other than being satisfied in the knowledge of sensible growth, professional employment and, whenever available, a bucketful of fun!

love what you do ~ By Cambridge Chamber of Commerce ~

BEN LANGTON BURRELL HAS A BIG GOAL – TO WIN MORE THAN ONE OLYMPIC MEDAL AND GAIN HIS CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT QUALIFICATION. Ben is a graduate accountant, working at Accounted4. He is also a part-time Massey University student and a full-time javelin thrower. “My daily routine consists of waking up at 6.30 every morning, training for an hour and a half at home and working 7-8 hours at Accounted4,” says Ben. He follows up with another 3-4 hours of training, and then study, “It’s a long and challenging day, physically and mentally, but I wouldn’t have it any other way because it’s what I love to do.” Ben breaks his big goal into smaller ones. “The small goals enable me to reflect on how everything is going and act as motivation, as I can physically see the progression that provides a sense of achievement. When you achieve something you feel motivated to continue to do it. These can be the smallest of goals, such as achieving a certain weight in

the gym for the day or getting positive feedback from something at work.” “When I wake up every morning I try and set two goals for my day. The first being a quantitative goal for my training and work, with a set performance I am wanting to achieve. And the second that will make my day more enjoyable. One or two little things, such as hanging out with friends or learning a new song on the guitar. The process of actually setting a goal for the day to add enjoyment to it actually enhances how well the day will go because there is something to look forward to.” Ben says, “The balance between enjoyment and achievement is exactly the same in a sporting and working context. If we can go to sleep each day and feel that we have achieved something and enjoyed the

process then we will be motivated to continue doing what we do and love doing it. Life will deliver the value and balance we desire when we are achieving and enjoying something every day.” The path to his goal hasn’t always been easy for Ben. He had his appendix out a week prior to the Olympic Trials, which ruled him out of contention for the Rio Olympics. He’s remained positive and motivated by taking a step back and trusts and believes that he can get back up and work towards the ultimate goal and achieve it. “I still wake up every single day wanting to keep going because I love what I do. The old saying ‘if you love what you do, you won’t have to work another day’ is very cliché but true. You are motivated to keep doing it because the very act of doing it gives you enjoyment”.

Providing you with certainty of achieving your goals and aspirations, regardless of unexpected events. ~ By Kate Ricketts, Jigsaw Professional Development ~ IF TRAINING IS WORTH DOING, THAN IT’S WORTH DOING WELL. SMART TIME, MONEY AND RESOURCE INVESTMENT SHOULD YIELD HIGHER RETENTION AND JOB SATISFACTION RATES AS WELL AS INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFIT ACROSS THE ORGANISATION. If that’s not enough to get you thinking about a company-wide training strategy consider these additional benefits: • Using a long-term strategy to forecast the training budget for future years can greatly assist your company’s forthcoming planning and financial model • Addressing individual staff needs across the board with one strategy allows an organisation to ensure staff are following the most suitable development route at the most appropriate time • Engaging an outside training provider makes identifying, recording and viewing competency information easy across the board in terms of both access and required action Richard Branson articulated it best when he said: Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to. To truly transform a business with training there has to be a partnership between the provider, organisation and individual. For training to succeed your staff must believe that the strategy has been designed with their environment, needs and goals in mind and not just ‘cookie cutter’ courses offered to tick the box. Success also means a solid commitment from both senior management and the organisation – engaging with the content development from the start, involvement in the training and following up as staff return to their roles with new learning in place. As more organisations embrace the advantages of a long-term training strategy, failure rates will drop. And this is a drop that will truly benefit staff, organisations and the wider business community.

2017 Waipa Networks Business Awards

EACH YEAR, THE WAIPA BUSINESS AWARDS RECOGNISE THE BEST OF BUSINESS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE IN WAIPA AND RAGLAN. The 2017 Waipa Networks Business Awards launches with a cocktail event on Thursday 4 May, at the home of the Awards’ Venue Partner – Mystery Creek Events Centre. All potential entrants, nominees, sponsors, previous entrants and winners are welcome to attend. The Awards are an impressive tool for businesses to build a profile, benchmark progress, extend capability and grow. Waikato University Management School provide a highly qualified, independent, robust and objective judging platform complemented by a judges’ visit for all Excellence categories. Robert Clancy of Amber Garden Centre, Supreme Award Winner 2016 explains, “You have absolutely nothing to lose, but you have so much to gain. We sat on the fence the year before but then decided when we did enter

to give it our all. The more time you spend pulling your business back to its bare bones, the more you will get out of the process. The feedback received back from the Judges allows you to improve and provide invaluable advice on how you can continue to grow and set goals for your organisations future.” Through the entry process alone, businesses can learn an amazing amount about their business. Feedback from the judges after the Awards provides valuable insights for consolidation or improvement. “Once you have completed your entry, you can actually sit back and see how good your organisation really is – across multiple areas. Often we know the good stuff but don’t consciously document and share it.”, says David Slone of CSC Buying Group – 2016 joint

winner of the Excellence in Sustainability and Community Contribution award and highly commended in Excellence in Small Business. “Obviously processes like this also enable you to see where you need to fine tune things and this is a priceless opportunity to improve.” Last year’s entrants really stepped up, providing the perfect opportunity to profile some of the region’s finest businesses and to acknowledge the incredible commitment to business growth, sustainability and community. There is plenty of advice and guidance available to entrants and the rewards are significant.
