Welcome to the first edition of OCAD MAGAZINE!

I've worked for OCAD for over 7 years now, and I still get the same buzz as I did the first time I came online and opened students work, from all over the world, to help support them on their creative journey. Our students are as passionate as ever, online learning is opening more creative doors than ever, and we have an incredible team of tutors that are providing the best workshops and mentoring across a vast range of art specialisms than ever before - what a great time to be at OCAD!

This edition looks at what is happening behind the scenes as students share their experiences, their work, and their aspirations for the future. It has been wonderful to speak to students from all levels and hear directly what OCAD means to them and how they are gaining so much from their online community. For many of our students across the world there are challenges and barriers to learning, and yet, together, with the help of tutors and each other, we are making creative dreams come true; it is a priviledge to be a part of that Well done to all those, particularly whose odds are stacked against them, who continue to work and reach out to ensure they don't let go of their passion for the arts - we are all with you!

Thanks to all the students invovled in writing the many articles you will read and the many more that share their work with us - they are the ones who are inspiring each other and achieving great things through their hard work and dedication to their courses and studies

We also hear from tutors, projects they are involved in, and a special guest shares their journey with us to becoming a successful fashion and advertising photographer It's been wonderful working with you all on our first Spring Issue magazine! Please enjoy celebrating with us the incredible work and achievements happening across the school

Poppy is studying on Foundation Diploma Art, Design and Media with OCAD She is graduating Summer 2023 and this artwork was from her Pathway Stage on the course

The idea of creating jellyfish art was not my initial plan. Originally, I intended to focus on cake-related artwork However, while browsing Instagram, I stumbled upon a breathtaking painting of a majestic aurora sky that sparked my creativity The luminous sky served as my primary inspiration for this jellyfish idea, and I became engrossed in researching various sources of illumination During my exploration, I came across stunning images of glowing jellyfish and found myself increasingly drawn to drawing fish. The end result was simply amazing, with the ability to see the background through the fish adding to its appeal.

Initially, I enrolled in the graphic design course, but eventually, I realized my true passion lies in fine art, and that's what I aspire to pursue in the future. Throughout the course, I engaged in various experiments to identify my preferred art style. I discovered that my style is not confined to a single genre, but rather encompasses several styles. I enjoy creating realistic pieces, as well as pop art. The pathway stage of the course proved to be a crucial phase in my journey, as it enabled me to comprehend my preferences for color schemes, details, and subject matter in my artwork.

Upon graduation, my plan is to focus on my business of selling art commissions For many years, I have dreamed of owning an art business but have lacked the necessary experience and preparation to do so However, with the extensive art experience gained during the course, I feel prepared to launch my art business. Ultimately, I aspire to own a cafe where I can display my artwork and offer it for purchase. In my spare time, I enjoy creating art pieces in a cartoon pop art style. I take great care in my work, paying close attention to details to ensure that each piece is executed perfectly.

PoppyDiggins

Throughout my life, I have been homeschooled due to frequent moves, which has allowed me to become comfortable with working remotely While it was initially challenging for me to adapt to remote work, I have learned to manage my time efficiently. Although I am still learning to improve my remote work skills, it provides me with the freedom to travel while maintaining productivity.

For prospective students considering joining the course, I would suggest taking it one step at a time and not putting too much pressure on yourself to have everything planned out from the beginning. It's important to work with what you have and be open to changes in your artistic direction as you progress through the course Take your time and focus on the parts of your vision that speak to you the most, as this will allow you to discover what you truly enjoy creating Remember that the process of discovery is just as important as the final product, so enjoy the journey and embrace the unexpected turns that may come your way

I love OCAD

"I have loved every minute of my art journey in the lower school of CHS. The OCAD teachers give clear guidance and instructions and make every minute enjoyable. I found their feedback super helpful, always supportive and great ways to make improvements. If there is a need to ask questions it is simple and easy to make contact and they always reply I’m excited for my next steps with OCAD!"

Learning about Georges Braque

Georges Braque was at the forefront of the art movement, Cubism

ExploringLowerSchool ArtandDesign Student Gallery

Lower School is the equivalent to Key Stage 3 Students are taught in a vertical system whereby age is not defining ability and progression It brings a sense of inspiration and motivation within the friendly atmosphere for the students, where ideas are shared in live lessons and student groups Many of our lower school students will progress into level 2 art and design

During the Spring Term, students had the chance to learn about this artist, their life and analyse their work

Students produced their own interpretation developing ideas through trials of drawing musical instruments images zoomed in, producing tonal studies, followed by colour studies, and also developing their own Braque inspired colour palettes They went onto drawing objects and cutting them up to create a new composition. Final studies comprised of applying the Braque style to a drawing of a chose object (choice of; car, trainer, lamp, chair, umbrella).

We think they did a superb job and expanded their growing portfolio whilst developing their creativity and ideas, developed a critical understanding of an historical artist, as well as learning how to express reasoned judgements that can inform their own work. Well done to all who took part!

Picasso, likened his paintings to writing a diary. Maybe a paintbrush is just like a pen, as he suggests, and links creativity of all types. At OCAD we like it when students bring their own lives and experiences into their work - telling a story is what manylevel2projectsbuildtowards.

You may need to alter some time frames and discuss this with tutors when we return online from 24th April. So take a look!

What has been a highlight for you so far working with OCAD?

view

Have you any favourite pieces of work or tasks you worked on?

Working on the 17 Skill Builder Tasks during the first year of the course, I have discovered media and art styles I prefer. Towards the last few tasks – having already pushed myself to explore and discover, which allowed my style and confidence to grow – I have created some of my favourite art pieces; I was really pleased with the outcomes of Task 13 (Learning from an artist) and Task 15 (Landscape painting). I was pleasantly surprised with the final piece for Task 15, since acrylics is a medium I’m usually not too fond of. I decided to challenge myself by using acrylics to achieve an oil painting look. I was over the moon when the painting turned out the way I imagined it

In addition to learning a lot of software skills (working digitally with art, using Powerpoint etc), one of the significant things I have improved in over the course is efficiency; I used to take hours to finish a piece of art, always wanting to get every single detail perfect With time, as my confidence grew and having learnt useful skills (for example the grid method, principles of colour theory, effects different media can create), I was able to produce art pieces I was satisfied with in shorter amounts of time.

08

It might sound cliché, but it’s difficult to say that there has been one, single, definite highlight-moment since working with OCAD, because the whole course is a highlight to me! It took some adjusting to take art classes online, but once I settled in, I enjoyed seeing my progress throughout the course; I gradually celebrated more successful art pieces which I can be proud of. I was able to compile a strong portfolio for my Skill Builder Tasks with constructive feedback from tutors and I’m now working on my Final Themed Project with confidence L E V E L 2 A R T
Have you overcome any challenges?

Have you used the live lessons during your time?

The live lessons offered by OCAD instructors have certainly helped me throughout the course. They are filled with useful bits of information and are incredibly insightful with the work explained clearly. I have attended most live lessons during my time on the course for the Skill Builder Tasks and have used the time to ask questions I had regarding course work It is also an opportunity to interact with the other students doing the course and see how they find the work

What would you say to prospective students thinking of working with OCAD?

Before starting the course with OCAD, I was sceptical – how could art possibly be taught online? But I was proven wrong – the lessons are interactive and engaging with the teacher presenting the work on screen and switching to camera to demonstrate the task at hand. If I miss a lesson, there’s always the recording to look at and chatting to peers and tutors through private message is also possible. Both teachers and students bring a sense of enthusiasm to the course and lessons – one can tell the teachers care about the education they provide and the students on the course are there because they really want to be there and improve their art OCAD has been an all-round great experience for me to build and refine foundational skills in art and has been a safe space for me to explore my interests.

How is OCAD preparing you for the future?

I've been given a glimpse into the world of the art industry. I am considering animation as a future career and hope to enrol in OCAD’s course in animation in the near future. The basic principles of art I have learnt on this course are invaluable and will definitely be useful even if I don’t pursue a career in art.

Upon completing the Exploratory Stage of the course students have had a range of opportunities to explore a range of mediums for their creative potential and briefs that let them explore broad genres through creative projects. The Pathway stage encourages students to explore research, both visual and written, to better define a contextual area for the pathway stage; also whilst exploring playful models of practice and communicating this through their outcomes. The need for more in-depth investigations and the development of ideas is a key part of student development during this stage where they will begin to demonstrate a level of autonomy in their studies.

Drawing has always been my passion, especially working with graphite pencils My tutors encouraged me to further my art studies with OCAD after my Level 2 art course I am so happy that I did, as I have evolved in my skills, methods, and approaches to art One of my favourite aspects is the variety of artistic directions available in this course. In Fine Art, for example, the flexibility under each project makes it possible to express your style Thanks to this course I've come closer to discovering who I am as an artist, as I've been creating in ways I never would have imagined before joining Even when a project seemed out of my comfort zone, I have found it's all about trusting the process, as ideas do come thanks to research and guidance from tutors I had two themes to pick from for my pathway stage, and although it was tough for me to choose, in the end, I went with Radium

For me, it was not the "safe" option as I had no idea what I would eventually produce However, I was sure that studying the topic would be very fascinating Learning about the effects of radium helped me see how I could reflect on this topic through my art I experimented by combining paints, water, and oil, which led to unusual shapes and blobs of colour, that I later photographed I continued to practice my photography skills by capturing anything that inspired me in the moment, no matter how random For example, I saw the sun beaming through my glass of water, creating an amazing reflection I decided to take a picture of it and then edit it to add green tones; I really liked the outcome.

Taking this a step further, I tried to capture the beautiful yet poisonous glow radium has To do this, I was inspired by the light produced by a UV Lamp

CAPRICE BATH

Images from Pathway Outcomes, 2023

After turning it on, I distorted my camera angles to catch these luminous shapes inside. I could then make the colours clash and pop even more off the page once I edited it These images turned out well, so I decided to include them as part of my Final Outcomes

As the study continued, I learned about Dancing Girls who had radium painted into their clothing so they would glow in the dark while dancing I thought the large pieces of white fabric spinning against a black background had a haunting feel Although I enjoyed trying out more literal and realistic drawings, I decided to give an abstract style a go

My tutor was a great help in giving me many methods and approaches to try out I coated textured string in paint, placed it down in spirals on a black card, and applied pressure with a piece of paper I dragged the

string out while holding it down, leaving me with elegant shapes Some of the time Using paint pens I drew swirls, enhancing the shape The scale was small since I repeated this method on size A3 until it worked I used my camera to zoom in on the successful ones After that, I again used the Photo Editor app, where I experimented with overlaying and fading the images together Although many of my drawings and methods didn't turn out as I had hoped, they helped me to develop the final pieces.

I am located in the UK, so this course has made it possible to continue learning and producing art wherever I am For example, I travelled to Germany to visit family, and I went to Scotland to see my best friend My future plans are open I definitely want to pursue creative work in the future While taking this course, I'm working part-time as a Virtual Creative Designer I would like to show my art on social media, perhaps combining my love of art and my work experience

Fatemeh Valizadeh is a level 3 Photography student who is set to graduate in Summer 2023. Here, she tells us what it is like as a student with OCAD

I am studying photography at OCAD institute and it is very enjoyable for me and I must say that my best and only wish is to progress in the field of photography and reach high degrees and since I do not live in UK, OCAD institute is the best institute for me

I have studied already at the postgraduate level of graphic design and bachelor of painting, and it has been several years since I graduated After finishing my education, I decided to continue my studies in the field of photography, but before starting my photography class and even while learning photography, I took courses in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Adobe Premiere Pro, Edius, ICDL, and Photo retouching and mixing and montage of the film

WOMAN, LIFE, FREEDOM

I upgraded and received their certificates, although I had to travel to other cities to get these certificates, and this was very exciting for me because I was thinking that I could participate in the field of photography as soon as possible, after that with the help of my brother and his like-mindedness, I decided to continue studying photography in England

After the research I did and the sites I searched, I got acquainted with OCAD. After that, with the help of my brother, I participated in the photography department level 2 in this school and took the course with tutor Mr. Gonzalez. I participated and during this course I got to know a good tutor who, in my opinion, is very patient and kind tutor Mr Gonzalez explains very clearly and understandably and explains every question to his students with heart and soul I must say that in addition to photographing and finding good and pleasant subjects, the existence of Mr Gonzalez and Miss

"I learned a lot at OCAD and also participated and won many competitions, which in itself was a very good challenge for me."

Graham has been a good encouragement for me and motivates me to be attracted to photography more than ever. I also learned a lot from the experiences of these two honorable people I got it.

I learned a lot at OCAD and also participated and won many competitions, which in itself was a very good challenge for me But I suggest to my peers to participate in OCAD in any field they like and try their luck for once I must also say that in order to fulfill my dreams, I have decided to get my IELTS certificate and one day immigrate to England and continue photography; I am sure that day will come and I will achieve my desires

In my opinion, all of OCAD training are enjoyable, not only in photography, but in all fields, and each of them is a special experience for itself I must say that the Halloween competition was a beautiful challenge for me, even with the problems that I faced, it was still exciting for me It was exciting.

Honestly, online courses were not difficult for me because I was learning the lessons well, but

because there were many internet problems where I live, it was a bit difficult for me, but despite this difficulty, I did not give up my studies in this school and continued - I did not give in to the difficulties The online course in turn leads to experiences that are sometimes memorable to me

Without a doubt, I must say that my future will be very beautiful because in the not too distant future I will come to England and I will succeed in the field of photography - I believe in myself that all these hardships will end one day and I have decided after after completing my studies, I will work in this field and earn money because this field is my favourite.

I am very grateful to God for giving me devoted parents so that I can live in the shadow of their fruitful tree and take leaves from their roots and try to acquire knowledge from their shadow

My parents, whose existence is a crown of honour on my head and their name is a proof of my existence, because these two existences after God have been the source of my existence, took my hand and taught me to walk in this valley of life full of ups and downs. Dedicated to my dear and kind parents and brothers who have always been a caring and devoted helper and a firm and reliable support for me in the hardships and difficulties of life.
