Judge Business School is ranked 10th in the World by The Financial Times The Financial Times has ranked Judge Business School 10th in the world in its 2008 MBA Global Rankings, moving up from 15th place in 2007 (January 2008). Dr Richard Barker, Director of the Cambridge MBA, commented: "This ranking will further enhance the reputation of the Cambridge MBA as a

programme that sits alongside the very best in the world. We are continuing to focus on attracting outstanding candidates and on building the distinctive excellence of our programme which is combined with the strength of the wider Cambridge University networks. It is gratifying that the intrinsic

value of the Cambridge MBA has again been recognised by The FT." This news from The FT builds on the Economist Intelligence Unit's ranking, which placed the School 7th in the 2007 global ranking of full-time MBA programmes, moving up from 11th the previous year.

Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Professorship of Finance In October of last year the School was given a gift of £1.85 million from Sir Evelyn de Rothschild and the Eranda Foundation in order to fund the first Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Professorship of Finance. The new Professorship of Finance will lead to the radical development of the existing finance programmes at the School. The post will have special reference to venture capital and devise new strands of teaching, including a new open programme in finance targeting the Cambridge ‘Hi-Tech Cluster’ of entrepreneurial ventures – a sector that makes up approximately 10% of Europe’s high-tech research and development investment.

Existing MBA finance modules are being significantly developed to match best practice worldwide and the specialist Master of Finance (MFin) degree will be available for those with previous experience in the financial sector. With the appointment of an internationallyrecognised leader in finance and economics to the role, the School will be able to promote excellence in teaching and research, foster collaboration between business and academia and bring rigorous research into the practice of venture capital. The Professorship is designed to provide new leadership and fresh vision in this important area and

help establish the School as a global centre of excellence in the field of business finance. The School’s Director, Professor Arnoud De Meyer, said: “This generous endowment will mean major expansion of our faculty and the School's teaching programme in the area of finance. This will allow us to maintain our preeminence as one of Europe’s leading business schools and compete internationally. Our influence as a School is global. As a result we take very seriously our responsibility to contribute the best research, teaching and ideas to the field of business finance, and to bring new perspectives on how it is taught and practised worldwide.”

Judge success with European Case Clearing House Dr Michael Barrett, Director of MPhil Innovation, Strategy & Organisation and Reader in Information Technology and Innovation, Judge Business School has won the 2008 ECCH European case award in the category: Knowledge, Information and Communication Systems Management. Dr Barrett is the first Judge Business School faculty member to have won this prestigious

award. The ECCH is the European Case Clearing House which is a highly regarded institution for teaching cases across Europe. They publish hundreds of cases year from all over the world and select winners of best cases (most successful based on distribution records and the decision of a blind executive committee) across nine categories.

7th Annual Eurasia Conference at the School On 8 November 2008 the School welcomes the 7th Annual Eurasia Conference: “Geopolitical Risks and Business Opportunities in Central Eurasia.” For the seventh consecutive year Judge Business School is hosting this international, policy-oriented conference on Central Eurasia and the wider Caspian region. The discussions will explore the strategically significant dimensions of political,

economic and business developments in the region, with particular focus on energy, security, communications, interregional relations and opportunities in the nonenergy sector. The conference attracts high level government officials, corporate and business leaders, academics and experts from around the world and the region.

Silicon Valley comes to Cambridge

10

November 2007 saw Judge Business School host the inaugural ‘Silicon Valley Connects to Cambridge’ event. The event was part of a larger programme called ‘Silicon Valley Connects to the UK organised by NESTA (The National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts) and Silicon Valley Connect. Prominent serial entrepreneurs, angels and venture capitalists from Silicon Valley in the US came to Cambridge to meet with their UK peers, Cambridge students and alumni, over a three day forum entitled ‘New Barriers and New Opportunities: Disrupting in a Global Collaborative World’. Cambridge was chosen

as the location for the forum due to its renowned reputation for leading interdisciplinary research in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship, making it a natural fit with Silicon Valley. Iconic entrepreneurs, including Megan Smith (Google), Hermann Hauser (Amadeus Capital Partners) and Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn), and investors such as James Slavet (Greylock), and Emily Melton (DFJ) shared their views on the latest and most innovative disruptive business models, providing best practice advice on how and why they came to create and fund some of today’s most successful disruptive technology

companies. Professor Arnoud De Meyer said: “The Silicon Valley Conference was a truly exciting opportunity for Judge Business School. I really appreciated the collaboration with Sherry Coutu and Ellen Levy from Silicon Valley Connect who were our co-hosts for this event. The Conference brought together some of the most dynamic Californian serial entrepreneurs, local Cambridge entrepreneurs and students and researchers from Cambridge University. There was a real buzz around this event and I would not be surprised to see some deals or even new start-ups coming out of this initiative.

At the end of the day I could see that delegates and speakers alike had difficulty leaving the Business School and were keen to continue their discussions and share their enthusiasm for innovation and enterprise. At Judge Business School we are fully committed to innovation and entrepreneurship, and this event was a real highlight among all the initiatives we take over the year to promote creativity and entrepreneurship amongst our students.” Nik Rouda, MBA 2005 said: “This event was one of the best conferences I’ve ever attended. The quality and range of speakers was simply extraordinary. DFJ, Amadeus, Oak, Google,

Warburg Pincus, Index, LinkedIn, Greylock, Cambridge Angels and more – all in one intimate venue. The opportunity to really meet the investors and entrepreneurs was fantastic, and every session was packed with keen insight and entertaining stories. I met more of the superstars of the internet world in three days in Cambridge than in 10 years of living in the Bay Area. The new connections and ideas will be invaluable, especially as I have strong ties to both geographies. This event rightly reflected Cambridge’s position as a world-class centre of innovation. Sign me up for next year, please!”

New Jawaharlal Nehru Professorship of Indian Business and Enterprise

In January Professor Arnoud De Meyer, Director, Judge Business School visited Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai with Alison Richards, Vice Chancellor, University of Cambridge as part of a team that announced the establishment of the Jawaharlal Nehru Professorship of Indian Business & Enterprise and

the Centre for India Business to the press in Delhi. The Jawaharlal Nehru Professorship of Indian Business and Enterprise has been established to help forge closer links between the Indian and other international economies and to promote understanding of India's interests and its place in the world economy. Assigned to Judge Business

School, the Professorship has been set up with a fund of £3.2 million, contributed by the Government of India to celebrate the centenary of Pandit Nehru’s arrival at Trinity College Cambridge, where he studied for a degree in Natural Science before going on to become India’s first Prime Minister. The University shall retain all of the £3.2m benefaction as a permanent endowment and shall apply the net income from investment of the sum towards the salary and expenses of the holder of the Professorship, and associated overheads. The Cambridge Centre for Indian Business will support the work of the Jawaharlal Nehru Professorship of Indian Business & Enterprise and will initially focus on contemporary research themes relating to today's business environment. Themes to be covered in the first three years include technology innovation, emerging global economies, the relationship between economic development and

knowledge economy and entrepreneurship. Professor Arnoud De Meyer, said: “India and the UK are on the path to a healthy bilateral economic and commercial relationship, arising from a common democratic outlook in both the countries. Recent years have seen a surge of investments into the UK from India, particularly in the IT sector. India is now the second largest investor in the UK from Asia in terms of number of projects. Prominent Indian companies present in the UK include TCS, Wipro, Infosys Technologies, Reliance Infocom and ICICI. Looking at the strong Indo-UK economic relations we are delighted to host the Centre for Indian Business within Judge Business School. The Centre will serve as a focal point for Indian and UK business and policymakers to work together to promote a better understanding of India's business interests and its place in the world economy.”

Further to the announcement of the Chair in January, Judge Business School is delighted to announce that Professor Jaideep Prabhu has been appointed as the first Jawaharlal Nehru Professor of Indian Business and Enterprise. Currently Professor of Marketing and Director of Research at the Tanaka Business School at Imperial College, London, UK, Professor Prabhu was born in Bangalore and grew up in Delhi, Goa and various parts of Karnataka. Professor Prabhu said: “I am honoured and privileged to have been elected to this Professorship. India now plays a pivotal role in the global economy. With 8-9 per cent annual growth, rising foreign exchange reserves, a booming capital market and rapidly expanding FDI inflows, India is the second fastest growing major economy in the world.” Professor Prabhu will assume his new role from 1 September 2008.

Professor Dame Sandra Dawson honoured by the Association of Business Schools Professor Dame Sandra Dawson, KPMG Professor of Management, has been awarded the title of Companion of the Association of Business

Schools (ABS), a newly created honour to mark the fifteenth anniversary of the launch of ABS. This award recognises individuals who have made

significant contributions towards the leadership of one or more UK Business Schools; successful promotion of business and management education,

development and research at national and international levels; policy development at regional, national and international levels which has made a positive

difference to the UK Business School sector; and/or outstanding and innovative achievements which have demonstrated distinction and high quality.

Women as Leaders Seminar Series

12

In February the School hosted the second of its McKinsey Women as Leaders Seminar Series. The seminar entitled ‘The Challenges of Entrepreneurship and Innovation’ featured keynote addresses from Karen Jones, Chairman of

Food and Fuel Ltd, and Mary Marsh, Director and Chief Executive of the NSPCC. Panel speakers included: Vivian Hunt, Principal, McKinsey & Company; Melanie Lee, Head of Research & Development, UCB Celltech; Julie Meyer, Founder and CEO, Ariadne Capital; Alison Maitland, Business writer (moderator). The purpose of the seminar was to bring together some of the UK’s brightest female students with senior professional women from across business, politics and society, to debate the

issues and challenges faced by today’s women in positions of leadership. Robyn Hudson, MBA 2007 said: “The McKinsey Women as Leaders Forum was a unique opportunity to interact with Women who have achieved lofty heights in business, entrepreneurship and even the not-for-profit sector. The key message for me was, in order to find inspiration at work and in life, you must figure out what drives your passion and then just go for it!” Valerie Fitton-Kane, another of this year’s MBAs commented: “In spite of great efforts by business

schools, women are still a minority in MBA programmes. In the classroom environment, it can be hard to discuss the unique challenges we face in the workplace, so signing up for the McKinsey Women as Leaders conference offered a great opportunity to focus on these topics and learn from women who've succeeded in the business world. The keynote and panel speakers, who came from a variety of sectors and backgrounds, were open and honest with us about their experiences and the skills they felt were important for success. In

the middle of the day, we broke out into workshops to work on specific skills such as personal impact and networking. I took the personal impact course and learned about the messages we convey about ourselves subconsciously through posture, eye contact and speech. I now have a new awareness of my impact and an understanding of the ways in which I can make a more positive and powerful impression on others as a businesswoman. I strongly recommend other women to attend this conference.”

Symposium on global finance hosted by Judge Business School In February the School’s Centre for International Business & Management (CIBAM) hosted a two-day symposium on ‘Global Finance’. The CIBAM Global Business Symposium convenes twice a year giving keynote speakers an opportunity to address the Symposium on a matter of topical interest chosen by the CIBAM Global Advisory Board. The opening panel debate, ‘Global Finance: The Issues’, was chaired by Dr Noreena Hertz, CIBAM’s Associate Director and a leading expert on economic globalisation. Influential panelists on the first day included Mr Chen Zhao,

Managing Editor, Bank Credit Analyst; Dr Peter Warburton, Director, Economic Perspectives Ltd and Member of the Shadow Monetary Policy Committee; Mr Jonathan Garner, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley. The panel considered the long-term prospects of global financial markets, arguing that the current credit crisis does not mark the end of the bull market. They also analysed the evolution of the global credit cycle, and discussed whether the boom in emerging markets domestic demands are capable of both mitigating the downturn in the United

States and keeping global economic growth at reasonable levels in the short to medium term. Among those who attended as keynote speakers on the second day were Mr Roger Nightingale, Global Economist, Pointon York Sipp Solutions; Mr Charles Sherwood, Partner, Permira; Mr Richard Hunter, Regional Credit Officer, Fitch Ratings; Professor Michael Dempster, Emeritus Professor of Management Studies, Judge Business School; Ms Vicky Pryce, Chief Economic Adviser and Director General of Economics at BERR and Joint Head of Government

Economic Service. This panel covered ‘Global Finance and the Future of Private Equity’ and ‘Global Finance: Credit Crisis’. Panelists and presenters discussed quantitative fund management, credit ratings, in particular how the current environment is shaping rating agencies and whether private equity can still justify its role in the economy and society. In addition they considered how the rise of China has inadvertently contributed to the world's current economic crisis and why credit policy is now too important to be left to central bankers.

Commenting on the event, Dr Christos Pitelis, Director of CIBAM, said: “The reasons behind the current problems in the financial markets, and to what extent private equity and securitisation have contributed to these, are all issues that businesses, governments and civil services should to be aware of. We hope that the symposium will encourage dialogue and collaborative opportunities between representatives from these communities in dealing with the challenges presented by the ongoing turmoil in the world’s economic climate.”

Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr Chris Hope

In brief… Professor Stefan Scholtes will finish in his role as Director of Research on 30 September 2008. Stefan has had remarkable success as Director of Research and in stimulating and enhancing the research orientation of Judge Business School and the RAE submission last November was a clear indication of this change in research orientation.

Dr Chris Hope, University Reader in Policy Modelling at Judge Business School, has been awarded the prestigious 2007 AspenEABIS Faculty Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award. This title is conferred by the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS) and The Business and Society Program at the Aspen Institute who, in partnership, run the annual European Faculty Pioneer Awards. The awards celebrate individuals who have demonstrated leadership and made a visible impact on business practice through integrating corporate responsibility and sustainable development issues into academic research, educational programmes and business practice. Dr Hope has sustained critical research over the last

15 years synthesising scientific and economic information on climate change. Using this data he has built mathematical models to help practitioners in their decision making when confronted with the effects of global warming. His most noted work is in the continuous development of the PAGE (Policy Analysis of Greenhouse Effect) integrated assessment model, which was used for the impact calculations in last year’s influential Stern Report – commissioned by the Government. Director of the School, Professor Arnoud De Meyer, commented: “This award acknowledges that Dr Hope is a true originator in the field. He has been a front runner in the exploration of what climate change would and will mean to society, and in particular to

businesses. He was developing his work at a time when these issues were decidedly unfashionable. Today the relevance of Dr Hope’s conclusions and prescriptions are having a real impact on policy and businesses and on the way ordinary people live their lives.” The award was first announced during a gala dinner event at EABIS’ 6th Annual Colloquium hosted by ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain on 20 September 2007, during which Dr Hope also addressed over 300 senior business leaders and academics on a plenary panel on climate change. The award was confirmed at the Aspen Institute's Awards Ceremony in New York City in November 2007.

Professor Danny Ralph has been appointed as the new Director of Research and will assume his post on 1 October 2008. Dr Jochen Runde has been appointed as Director of The MBA Programme and assumed his post from 1 September 2008. Dr Matthias Holweg has been promoted to Reader in Operations Management. Dr Richard Steinberg, Reader in Operations Management, has been awarded a three year joint research grant from the ESRC and DFG (German Research Foundation) for £570,000. Dr Steinberg partners with Professor Martin Bichler, Technical University of Munich, on this grant for their research, which is entitled ‘A Comparison of Centralized and Decentralized Combinatorial Auctions’.

Congratulations to the IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) who recently won half a share of the Nobel Peace Prize along with Al Gore for the work that has been done on climate change. Professor Chris Hope (now a Nobel Laureate) is only one of only three Cambridge academics who are Lead Authors of the IPCC. Check out the new-look School website – www.jbs.cam.ac.uk. Kearney Global Prize, an annual international business case competition. The winning Cambridge team of Janine George, Laura Murphy, Tim Ensor and Peter Chanco, who adopted the team name ‘Seriti’, an African term that implies quiet wisdom, community respect and influence, competed against the other finalist MBA team from Columbia Business School. The Cambridge team was noted for its innovative solutions to the case and its impressive team dynamic. Commenting on the winning presentation, Phil Dunne, Partner, A.T. Anniversary Celebrations

On November 23 2007 Claudio Marinelli (MBA 2004) took a group of entrepreneurs, academics, venture capitalists and other practitioners from Cambridge, several of whom were sourced form the alumni network; to Milan for a one day workshop aimed at teaching the basics of high-tech entrepreneurship. The workshop, titled ‘From Theory to Application: how to turn ideas, science and technology in products and services that change the way we live’, was organised by Claudio with the help of Dr Shai Vyakarnam, Director CfEL, Judge

Business School, Judge Business School’s Alumni Office and in collaboration with journalists from the prestigious Italian financial newspaper Sole 24 Ore. Scientists, aspiring entrepreneurs, tech transfer officers and incubator managers gathered in the snazzy conference room of the Italian newspaper’s headquarter (designed by architect Renzo Piano) for a day of full immersion in the nuts and bolts of entrepreneurship. A number of Italian speaking Judge MBA alumni, including Lucio Cicolecchia (MBA 2001), Georg Buchner (MBA 2003), Andrea

Dalmaso (MBA 2005), Jose Vega (MBA 2000), Emiliano Ingrassia (MBA 2004) and Patricio Cavassa (MBA 2004), kindly offered their precious help as facilitators for the afternoon sessions of the workshop. Despite the copious amounts of good food and wine that filled the evening before the workshop, the team delivered the goods on the field and successfully accomplished their teaching mission. Organisers, speakers and facilitators hope to repeat the event soon, in Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

Hong Kong Drinks Reception Professor Arnoud De Meyer and Dame Sandra Dawson visited Hong Kong in November and took the opportunity to meet with over 20 alumni living and working in the region. An informal cocktail

reception was held on 8 November in Tiffany’s New York Bar at the Intercontinental Grand Stanford providing members of the network with an opportunity to hear about recent School activity,

Alumni, current students and guests were invited to the 5th anniversary drinks reception for the MPhil Technology Policy programme at the House of Lords in London on 26 September 2007. Over 15 members of the alumni

network were able to join the celebrations which served to showcase the development of the programme over the previous five years as well as welcoming the incoming cohort who had just recently started their programme.

Festive Networking with Wharton December: Sir Paul Judge kindly opened his home for a new to the calendar networking event in collaboration with Wharton Business School. Alumni were invited to Sir Paul’s spectacular Panoramic

apartment for festive drinks and networking. A fabulous opportunity for both Wharton and Judge Business School alumni to network in style, the event was hugely popular with over 100 alumni welcomed.

MBA 2004 Reunion

Members of MBA 2004 met in Edinburgh last September for their annual reunion. Class members who attended included Manu Legein, Byron Wilson, Stacey Liu, Stephanie Snyder, Gabriel Flores, Emiliano Ingrassia, Adrian

and Angela Ogier, Stefano Martinotti his wife and their new baby. We had some fantastic plush dinners and spent the days sight-seeing in beautiful Edinburgh. Many thanks to Angela for organizing a splendid weekend event!

Alumni event in Shanghai Professor Arnoud De Meyer, Director, Judge Business School recently met alumni in Shanghai at an event hosted by the Oxford and Cambridge Society Shanghai. Alumni from across the network met for a BBQ and drinks reception on Saturday 31 May at Sugar

Club, Xin Tiandi, with the opportunity to hear about the latest happenings from the Judge Business School community. A great time was had by all! Thanks to Caroline Rowe, President, Cambridge & Oxford Society Shanghai for helping with this event.

Alumni Breakfast in San Diego Arthur Meadows, MBA 2000 reports on the recent breakfast stateside “Sandra Dawson was briefly visiting San Diego on business at the end of May. The benefits of our newlyimproved alumni database were pressed into good use, as Rachael Barker, our Alumni Relations Manager, quickly contacted alumni stretching from northern Los Angeles to the Mexican border, as Sandra’s final schedule became apparent. The Grand Del Mar is glorious luxury resort spa and golf complex tucked away in the hills behind Del Mar about 20 miles north of San Diego. A bright and early breakfast was in order to fit in Sandra’s hectic schedule. In attendance were Ferey Faridian, MBA 1994 and his wife Jackie (from Santa Monica area of Los Angeles, about 90 minutes away – double credits as they must have had a very early start in order to attend) and Harjit Kullar, MBA 2001 with his wife Harimandir and their

daughter, Sarabjt. (Credit to Sarabjt for being so wellbehaved what must have appeared to be insufferably boring adult conversation!). I was in the final week as a San Diego resident before relocating to London. Initial introductions immediately revealed common interests: Jackie was at Imperial College Hospital whilst Sandra was at the Tanaka School at Imperial College. Harjit working for Invitrogen, a life science company in Carlsbad, discussed shared medical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology interests. Fortunately, Arthur and Ferey chatted about venture and early stage companies on either side of the Atlantic. It was excellent having Ferey’s experiences as being a member of the programme when it was still two years in length. It demonstrated that the early ethos of community and quality are still very much apparent. Sandra shared some of her obvious delight and pride at the continued

success of the School: how elevation up the ranking tables had lead to an increasing number of high caliber applicants, how the MBA intake had grown in class size, without compromising the overall quality and collaborative nature of the programme. News of the ongoing building work at JBS astonished Ferey – very different from his recollections of the ‘pioneering’ days. Breakfast was delicious – never before had I had crabmeat, avocado and Tabasco sauce for breakfast – only available in the most sophisticated and forward thinking Southern California hotels, I can assure you! A quick photo ensued before breakfast broke up too quickly, as Sandra was called away by the arrival of further appointment. Best wishes and promises of mutual introductions flowed. Ferey, Jackie and I remained chatting for at least another hour, such was the bonhomie.”
