Cambridge Judge Business School Project update, May 2014

the cambridge judge business school site expansion project

In 2015 work will commence on the creation of a beautiful building, set to open in 2017. The new building will be designed to allow us to bring the Cambridge Judge Business School community and our activities under one roof and will support our plans for growth. Find out more about the timeline and objectives overleaf.

Why do we need new buildings?

What will be included in the site expansion?

Cambridge Judge Business School is bursting at the seams. Did you know that today 15 members of faculty and 30 members of staff have offices in buildings other than the main Cambridge Judge building or Keynes House? Did you know that 30 per cent of our degree programme lectures and 65 per cent of our Executive Education programmes take place off-site?

The site Master Plan, published in December 2013, details our overall vision for the Old Addenbrookes site on which we are situated. That plan encompasses two main phases of development and although we are currently only planning the first phase, this will meet our priority needs.

We often talk about being a collaborative community, but we don’t currently have a shared experience of the working and learning environment. This project aspires to change that whilst at the same time giving us flexibility and a degree of control that will allow us to grow our activities. This will be a big building project taking place on a constrained inner city site and will cause disruption to our activities once demolition and construction commence, but the end result will be the exceptional facilities, built in accordance with sustainability targets, that we need as we embark on the second 25 years of our existence and our aspiration to become one of the world’s best business schools.

The main focus of the project will be the development of a large building on the rear of the site replacing the existing student hostels. This facility, which will include significantly enhanced dining facilities for all members of Cambridge Judge, will also provide us with teaching facilities for our executive-level programmes, two raked teaching spaces for degree programmes and a combination of open plan and individual offices and meeting rooms. This first phase will also include some refurbishment of Keynes House and the creation of a bridge between Keynes House and the main School building.

How will we pay for this project?

How will this affect me personally?

Phase 1 of the project is currently estimated to cost £32 million to construct, plus a further £2 million to fit out.

The vast majority of the next academic year will be free from the disruption of demolition and construction. However, some office moves may take place from Easter 2015 onwards; we will consult with line managers and programme managers about the best time to relocate teams and will finalise plans in Autumn 2014.

We are extremely grateful to The Monument Trust, established by the late Simon Sainsbury, for their exceptionally generous gift of £8 million to support this project. The donation follows the Trust’s founding gift of £5 million in 1991 which helped to establish the Judge Institute of Management Studies (as was) in this building. The University has pledged to lend us £12 million, repayable over a 25 year period. This is standard practice within the University for ‘capital projects’ (i.e. building projects) once significant philanthropic support has been achieved.

A separate document showing the most up-to-date timetable for the entire project is available separately. The rest of the key milestones are: 1. Submission of the planning application, summer 2014, 2. Demolition of hostels, spring 2015 3. Completion date of the phase 1 development mid-2017

We therefore need to raise the remaining £14 million from philanthropic support over the next few years. Conscious that this represents a challenging target, the University will offer us a bridging loan to ensure the project can proceed without delay.
