Seeing the positives Jeremy Smith talks to Jan Nesbit ahead of the annual Red Puppy appeal.
“Every day you can choose to get out of bed and be positive.” Given what Cambridge’s Jan Nesbit has been through, that statement is profound. Just over a decade ago, Jan was diagnosed with Cone-rod dystrophy, a genetic condition which effects the light sensitive cells of the retina. The diagnosis followed hot on the heels of unrelated hip surgery and she lost the majority of her sight “quite quickly”. Within six weeks, Jan went from being able to drive – and holding down a 50-60 hour per week job in which she travelled all throughout New Zealand and sometimes Australia – to no longer driving and “sitting at home”. “It was just that sudden. It was pretty hard work there for a while. I won’t lie, I did howl for about three months I think.” And then, about a year after losing her sight came more news – a diagnosis of stage four breast cancer. She had planned to complete a University degree in Social Sciences with a counselling element, but the cancer diagnosis put paid to that. Even in spite of all of that, Jan has an amazing outlook. “Oh yes, I still do believe positivity is the best way to handle things. “You can choose to get out of bed and feel sad all day, or you can choose to think ‘yippee another day, what can we do?’” Jan has been in remission for five years. Sharing her story in the hopes she may

help spread some of that positivity, her journey is also a major reason why Jan is an avid supporter of the Blind and Low Vision New Zealand Red Puppy Appeal every year. In 2020 the appeal will be held on March 13 and 14. In Cambridge, collectors will be outside four locations – Countdown, The Warehouse, FreshChoice Leamington and Paper Plus. “We would really love enough money to get a few more guide dogs out there for people.” Worldwide, Jan said roughly 40 out of every 100 puppies who are prospective new guide dogs go through to the training stages and then fewer still are whittled down to become fully trained guide dogs. Jan’s dog Portia is thought to be the only currently active guide dog in Cambridge. Her previous guide dog Gretel, who she still owns, has retired. “Gretel has taken me through my chemotherapy – everything – she’s been so loyal I could not have given her away.” Here in town, Jan is also involved in the Cambridge Blind & Vision Impaired Support Group, which meets on every third Thursday of the month at 10am at Cambridge Baptist Church Those who can give a few hours of their time to be a volunteer collector on either of this year’s two appeal days can call 0800 787 743 (0800 PUPPIES), or register online at https://blindlowvision.org.nz/

Waipa walks
with Ceana Priest
Author Ceana Priest continues her series of suggested walks around Waipa by visiting Kakepuku Track. For more information go to wwwoutdoorkids.co.nz
This old volcano perched on lush countryside provides a great workout and luckily the amazing views compensate for the burning lungs. From the car park you stroll past farmland before the path starts to gently switchback up the mountain. The first section is relatively open with a steady incline and it’s not long before you get a bird’s-eye-view of the surrounding countryside. The trail has sections of clay which are slippery in winter or after rain, so for younger or less confident kids this might be better suited for a summer adventure. Walk through an avenue of ferns before the trail gets steeper. It’s about here little kids will probably ask for a piggy-back ride. A short flat section gives you some respite but then it’s back to getting stuck in with some stairs leading up the final stretch.

Waikato Rivertones – which features Cambridge members – is inviting women of all ages to their upcoming Open Night on Monday. The chorus is the current New Zealand Champion in women’s barbershop singing and will be representing New Zealand at the Sweet Adelines International Competition in Louisville, Kentucky in October. Cambridge residents Adrienne Windsor and Robyn Baron have been members for 15 years and two years respectively and both said they are hooked on the close harmony, friendships and excellent education that the chorus offers. The open night will be an evening of entertainment as well as offering the opportunity for attendees to “find their voice” and try out four-part harmony singing for themselves. The open night will be at Marian School in Clyde Street, Hamilton East at 6.45pm. Further details on the Open Night can be found on the Waikato Rivertones Facebook page or website.

At the junction turn left to the trig - which sits at 460 metres above sea level - and on a clear day take in the sights of all the region’s mountain peaks. This volcano was formed about 2.5 million years ago. The boardwalk under the trig loops back to the main path. Māori legend says the maunga was named by Tainui tohunga Rakataura in memory of the shape of his pregnant wife, Kahurere. This is also a Grade 2 Easy mountain bike path. But no bikes are allowed past the stairs for cultural reasons. Details: Facilities - There is a basic toilet a few minutes along the track. Time - Allow two to three hours return. Accessibility - This is a medium/hard adventure. The well graded paths are steep and slippery at times. The walk also includes boardwalk and steps.
Dogs - Dogs are not allowed on this adventure. Getting there - The car park is off Kakepuku Mountain Road approximately 15 minutes from Te Awamutu.
On the beat with DEB THURGOOD Let’s spread the word
It was great to meet so many people at the Over 60s and Grey Power meetings this week. Thank you for having me in to visit. I hope you found our time together beneficial and took away some ideas and information you found useful. I encourage everyone to share information that you are provided by Police, whether it be here in my column or perhaps through the Waikato Police Facebook Page. Not everyone accesses the same sources, so sharing is really caring in that respect! From recent columns, let’s spread the word about bringing your vehicle to a complete stop at Stop signs (so many people still aren’t), mandatory cycle helmet use, keeping those bicycles off the CBD pavements and securing your powerbox with a screw or cable tie to reduce the opportunity for your mains to be switched off (Leamington). If you tell two people, they’ll tell two people, so on and so on. Some exciting news is that Cambridge Station will be welcoming our new OC Station starting Monday 9th March 2020. We’ll do a full introduction for Sergeant Ben Joll once he’s here. On another topic, I have noticed a few burglaries lately in one of our new subdivisions, incidents that are a timely reminder to ensure tight site security. We recommend all tradies mark their tools either by engraving their drivers licence number on them or writing your ID with a UV-visible only pen. It’s best to store tools securely out of sight and ideally not within your signwritten
vehicle. If possible, lock up your work vehicles when you are elsewhere on site. Secure your site as much as possible when the work day ends and be alert to any unauthorised access or visits. If you are on a bigger construction project, it is common for a shipping container to be left onsite for storage. Make sure that the lock has a protective cover welded around it to prevent bolt cutter access to padlocks and chains. Install a security system with audible alarm and a CCTV camera within the container itself. If someone is determined to get in, they will find a way, so in that case, reducing the time the offenders remain inside and getting CCTV footage to identify them are key. If you are one of the first residents in a new subdivision, congratulations on your new home! Keep an eye on your neighbours-tobe. Be aware of your own house security, don’t advertise the arrival of new high end consumer products and remember to lock your windows and doors. It’s a good idea to visit www.snap.org. nz to create an online profile to record serial numbers and upload photos of your valuable items. Let’s remove the opportunity for criminals to take from our community, and if they do, lets do all we can to get as much evidence as possible to prove who they are and hold them accountable.

Briefs
Waipā enjoyed its second substantial fall of rain in 2020 this week. The Waikato Regional Council recorded more than 10mm of rain before 7am Wednesday at Waitanguru, west of Te Kuiti, and was expecting considerably more there. The lack of rain prompted Waipā District Council restrict water use Te Awamutu, Pirongia and Ōhaupō.
Virus battle
Waipā schools are taking precautionary action as the country braces for more cases of Coronavirus. Hautapu school announced this week it was bringing forward its usual ‘flu-season’ procedures to help avoid the spread of any infectious disease.

Dino’s here
Visitors to Waikato Museum in Hamilton will be the first in New Zealand to see an exhibition about dinosaurs. Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival opens tomorrow and unveils the latest research about the dinosaurs. This exhibition uses life-sized animated models, skeletons, fossils and dig pits to show how dinosaurs evolved – and what is known about their appearance from fossils found in China, including the spikes, quills, protofeathers and feathers that covered their skin. The exhibition will run to June 14, and Waikato Museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm. For details and admission costs go to the waikatomuseum.co.nz website.

Cancer fighters
A team of Wintec Research interns have discovered an anticancer drug which the polytechnic says is derived from the by-products of meat processing. A biomedical experiment by overseas researchers Suhang Zhu (Jinhua Polytechnic, China) and Boeun Kim (Kyungpook National University, South Korea) involved extracting the anti-cancer drug, derived from bilirubin, a product from the normal breakdown of red blood cells. The project was led by Wintec International Research and Internship Manager, Dr Pierson Rathinaraj. “We deliberately wanted to create a low-cost cancer drug from an easily available source – it costs around $20 to extract one gram of bilirubin,” he said. “Through experiments it has effectively shown it will kill cancer cells.”
Fun Run
The annual Waipā Fun Run will be held on March 15 starting in Victoria Square, Cambridge, at 9am. The event, organised by St Peter’s Catholic School, includes 2k, 5k and 10k runs and walks. For more details go waipafunrun.co.nz
Plastics out
Fieldays says waste initiatives, including sorting for commercial composting, a Waste Partnership Scheme with large exhibitors and reducing single use plastic resulted in a 97 percent increase in compostable material being separated and composted correctly last year. Tourism boom for Waipā
By Jeremy Smith
The “hidden gem” that is Waipā had the highest growth rate in New Zealand for tourism spend in the last year. The information is contained in Infometrics’ quarterly economic monitor released at Waipā District Council’s Strategic Planning and Policy Committee this week. Figures show tourism spend in the region grew 14 per cent in the 12 months to December 2019. Additionally, Waipā recorded the third highest economic growth rate in New Zealand, with 5.1 per cent. Tourism, business growth and the primary sector were the three major drivers. Cambridge Chamber of Commerce chief Kelly Bouzaid said investment in the region continued to drive opportunity into the local economy but
noted the growth exposed shortcomings. “You just need to look at the demand on retail space, business expansion and the changing landscape of Hautapu,” she said. “Our rapidly growing industrial centre has no sewerage or town water supply… human resources are stretched, and businesses will need to develop HR strategies to ensure replacement and retention in light of our aging demographic and recruitment of our youth and millennials in the region.” She said immigration should be less of an election issue and assessed on business needs. “Employers are struggling to find suitable applicants for positions in their companies and are surprised to find how difficult it is to obtain a visa to allow a qualified person to join them from overseas. There are simply not sufficient people within
New Zealand who are willing or able to undertake roles that are available.” Te Awamutu Chamber chief executive Kris Anderson said Waikato as a whole was well positioned “and the Waipā region has been a hidden gem for some time”. In the primary sector, the report suggested meat and dairy prices will remain higher than previous years – with an expected additional $67m from the higher milk pay-out in the 2019/20 season is expected to flow into the region, The total pay-out currently estimated at $526m. The five fastest growing sectors for Waipā were health care and social assistance, construction, education and training, public administration and safety, accommodation and food services contributing 524 jobs to the district.
“No one ran away, they all stayed to help and that really is what a sense of community is all about. “I’ve said right from the start – I’m so very grateful, to everyone - they were just fantastic. The way the school handled it was just amazing.” She applauded the professionalism of Cambridge High School deputy principal John McDonnell and thanked ambulance and hospital staff. She has warned of the “very real” dangers of vaping, saying her son had no pre-existing medical conditions and, as far as she was aware, hadn’t vaped before. She attributed her son’s collapse as a “direct result” of vaping. A proposed law change before parliament seeks to ban the sales of vaping products to people Under 18, restrict certain flavours and bar vapers
from lighting up in smoke free areas. The mother – who said she initially hadn’t been aware that those under 18 could legally vape - had a straightforward warning. “Yes, my warning to young people is don’t even open the door. Don’t start vaping just because it’s seen as cool. This is about educating people, we don’t even know the full extent of the dangers of vaping yet.” Mr McDonnell said while the school didn’t want to over dramatise such incidents, it was a reality they were taking very seriously. He said Cambridge High School has opted for education and awareness, rather than a punitive approach. The mother said her son was now back at school with the “blessing” of no ongoing side effects - vowing that he would never vape again.
Thankful mum’s vape warning By Jeremy Smith
A Cambridge mother whose son collapsed and stopped breathing shortly after vaping during a school lunch time has described as “horrific” the moment she was phoned to tell her what had happened. “It was very, very scary, just the most frightening thing.” The Cambridge News spoke with mother and son this week and agreed not to identify them. They said the stark realities of the dangers of vaping had hit home. “It seems to me, vaping is being marketed to young people as a safer version of smoking – and to older people as a safer way of helping those who smoke quit. But if it is safe, then how did this happen to my son?,” the mother said. On Tuesday, she agreed to speak out exclusively, with a two-fold purpose in mind. She wanted to thank Cambridge High School students and staff for the “swift and professional” manner in which they dealt with the “highly stressful” situation and to warn other young people and their parents to “not even open the door” to vaping. The mother said after her son collapsed at school, he was surrounded by support and a teacher got him breathing again, before an ambulance arrived and took him to Waikato Hospital. She has no doubt those swift actions helped save her son’s life and said she couldn’t thank those at Cambridge High School enough.

High-flyer wins HR awards By Steph Bell-Jenkins
Cambridge woman Roz Urbahn has been instrumental in helping Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) win two prestigious human resources awards. Her organisation won both the Organisational Change and Development Award and the Best Wellness Programme Award at the 2020 NZ HR awards, which “recognise excellence and outstanding achievement within New Zealand’s HR community”. The agri-tech cooperative beat out a number of other nominees, including New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Unitec Institute of Technology in the former category and CocaCola and Xero in the latter. Urbahn joined LIC in 2017, moving to Cambridge from Auckland with her husband Murray and sons Blake (10) and Brody (8) to lead its HR department as chief people officer. As well as flying high in the corporate world, the busy mum was appointed chair of Leamington School’s board of trustees last year. Urbahn has played a key role in a continued drive to transform LIC’s business, which began four years
LIC’s chief people officer Roz Urbahn with her son Brody.
ago after the co-operative recorded its first ever loss, paying no dividend to farmer shareholders. “We knew we needed to transform our business to create a more productive and sustainable future,” chief executive Wayne McNee said. He believed creating a “supportive and sustainable internal culture” had been vital to achieving a turnaround that had seen the cooperative deliver a $15.6 million dividend to its 10,300 shareholders last year, the largest paid out since 2013.
Urbahn said introducing the ‘Well Aware’ programme, which supported employee resilience and psychological wellbeing, had further improved LIC’s internal culture over the past 12 months. “We’ve seen outstanding results and shifts in behaviours, knowledge and employee engagement as well as more requests for employee resilience and psychological wellbeing support from both employees and managers,” she said.

FRIDAY MARCH 6, 2020
CAB week: here’s the information The annual Citizens Advice Awareness Week runs nationally on Monday under the 2020 theme, We are There for Everyone. Keith Urwin, who moved into the role of Cambridge’s Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) chairman late last year, said around 38 volunteers worked at the Bureau on a rostered basis and general enquiries making up the bulk of their work. He said these range from requests for information - often seeking contact details and access to local services - to more
complex matters that might include requests for information on employment issues, landlord/tenant disagreements, disputes between neighbours, consumer-related issues, dealing with government agencies, family or relationship disputes and more. “Volunteers work with clients to enable them to find solutions to their problems,” said Keith. “We do not tell them what to do. Volunteers can help clients access further information or develop options for further action. Very often, talking through a problem
is all that is needed.” He said CAB had access to a wide range of information on all sorts of issues, as well as to specialist and legal advice. Among other specialist services offered at the Bureau are the weekly Wednesday free legal clinics for those wanting to have a brief conversation with a lawyer, specialist consumer support, and support for those seeking advice around negotiations with government agencies such as WINZ. CAB also takes bookings for the Cambridge St
John Health Shuttle, and a Justice of the Peace is available at the Bureau twice a week, on Monday and Friday afternoons. “We want to let people know that we really are there for everyone,” said Keith, “and that we welcome all enquiries, big or small. We can also help with filling out forms and writing letters.” CAB in Cambridge operates from Alpha St, opposite Victoria Square. It is open daily from 9am to 4.30pm. Enquiries can be either by telephone (07-827 4855), or in person.

Artist of the month
Plenty to smile about
The Cambridge News introduces Marion Hunt in its monthly series on our artists
By Sue Milner, Cambridge Community Board chair
It’s been another hot month in Cambridge, hot weather and lots of hot events. It seems as though there is a different banner over Victoria St almost weekly. It’s also a busy time for tourists So we are seeing plenty of visitors in town - we can all greet them with with a smile, it all adds to the image of our town as a great place to visit and enjoy. It’s times like these that we can be grateful that we are the Town of Trees, though even some trees are finding it tough - I think some mulch may be helpful but I’ll have to check with our very wonderful ‘Cambridge Tree Trust’. For the newcomers, the Cambridge Tree Trust is the group that has for several years planted recreation areas with trees and shrubs, and still keep a watchful eye on them. I’ve done a bit of walking through some of our reserves in the past month, and enjoyed some of the areas planted by the Tree Trust. There
are some great tracks in treed areas between the two bridges, and between Pope Terrace and Ihimaera Terrace there is a good track, complete with a stile or two taking walkers through a small paddock and then on, with great views over the river, and at one end there are lovely fruit trees. We have a Community Board meeting this week, and as well we have several working groups meeting, including the Anzac Group that will be organising the Anzac events for next month. The Community Board has several working groups and we are grateful to the members of our community who are part of them. The groups include Landscape, Sister Cities - Le Quesnoy and Bihoro, as well as the Anzac -Armistice Group. These groups and their members are all part of what can best be described as the Cambridge Spirit.
As a lover of painting I found my way to the Cambridge Society of Arts ‘Painting Place’ on Thornton Road over two years ago. My name is Marion Hunt. I have this year decided to slow my working life in order to paint more. I have painted with watercolour for years, but after an oil painting workshop at the Painting Place, which I really enjoyed, I got some oils and got started. I began with a copy of a lost Rembrandt called ‘The Storm on the Sea of Galilee’ which had been stolen in 1990. I loved trying to recreate this amazing, moving scene. My own oil compositions include ‘Helleborus With Bee’ and my largest - ‘Birth of a Star (with watching Angel)’. For this I used a palate knife to get the wings feathery. My latest work is an ink and watercolour turtle.

FRIDAY MARCH 6, 2020
THE AGE OF REASON
BUSINESS SHOWCASE
Aussie? We’ll take the south road By Peter Carr
I’m still traveling the byways of the South Island where the peaceful roads allow the mind to wander. And I wonder how life in the south differs from them ‘up there’. Firstly the people. Driving a campervan, one is used to pulling over when the cars behind become in excess of three in total. In the North Island, invariably, at least one of the overtaking drivers will acknowledge with a toot of the horn, flash of lights or a respectful wave of thanks. Not so in the South Island. Overtaking these pesky restricted-to-90 kph white boxes is a rite of passage. No wave - just a burst of exhaust smoke and they are gone. Possibly maintaining that ‘their’ roads are for them only. Shame really for, when you do the maths a great deal of South Island road surfaces are paid for by taxes emanating from north of the Cook Strait. In crassly presented Queenstown gouging tourists financially has almost reached the standard of an art form. Having made those negative comments here is the good news. The nice lady managers of a Christchurch shopping mall let us stay two nights in their car park when a low tree blocked the entrance to a friend’s drive. The publican in deep south Riverton not only let us stay in his car park but opened up his technically closed dining area to satiate my wife’s craving for blue cod. Naturally we obliged with appropriate support of his bar takings. The historically driven lady in the Bluff
maritime museum let me see some very interesting items, bringing back memories of my early 60’s sea going visits to that bleak interface with Foveaux Strait. The lady in the cheese factory at Oamaru went out of her way to explain the history of their products while trying to ply us with their ten years old Tasty. At that age it would have to be extremely tasty. During this over 3000km sojourn of the Mainland we fell in with a large number of people of our age group who, mainly from the North Island, were very much enjoying traveling the long, straight and thinly trafficked roads. Everyone was supportive of spending as much time as possible prior to catching the return ferry. It takes me back to the old TV advertising adage from the NZ Tourist Authority (or similar) ‘don’t leave town till you have seen the country’. This trip has more than proved that plea to be very worthy. Those folks and their magnificent land are far more important than the perceived excitement of visiting Australia. And the nice ferry people kindly let us change our return booking when we were ahead of our planned time, stating quite clearly that there would be no charge for this alteration. A lesson that an airline near and dear to us could well take on board. So now we will wend our way back to Cambridge, peruse the photos, tell all the good stories and hopefully plan for a return trip.

Cardon Rural Recruitment Your Rural Recruitment and Employment Contract Specialists Having the right on farm staff at the heart of your business is your greatest asset. Along with having the right staff is having the right contract, for everyone to be covered legally and for staff to know what their terms and conditions are. Cardon Rural Recruitment specialise in finding skilled staff for your farming team, from Farm Assistant to VOSM. Based in Te Awamutu and covering the greater Waikato, King Country and further afield, Anne has been recruiting for farmers for four years. Anne and her team see every farm is uniquely different in their staff requirements. They go to great lengths to match employer and employee. Visiting clients on their farm is the best way to get to know them and to find out what their unique requirements are. Anne says she always enjoys meeting her clients and seeing their farms which helps to talk to prospective employees from a firm knowledge base. There are a lot of great kiwi farm staff and a lot of great employers out there. Anne’s aim is to bring them together.
Anne’s husband’s business is Cardon Dispute Resolution, specialising in employment law, particularly farming disputes. Employment Contracts are a vital part of any employment. It’s important that employers and employees start their working relationship based on trust and confidence. Many mistakes can be made with having the wrong or inadequate contracts. There are strict terms around contracts, especially fixed term and casual contracts. It pays to get the right advice from an employment law specialist. Cardon Rural Recruitment offer clients employment contracts, arranges employee drug testing and criminal history checks - all good ways to start a good working relationship. Anne sees farming as a great career especially for young people who enjoy hands-on work. It requires an amazing diversity of skills – mechanical, building, plumbing, veterinary, IT, etc and, of course, animal husbandry and being able to manage pasture. Anne is proactively working on setting up a farming cadetship scheme for young people to become ‘work ready’ in the industry. For recruitment – let Anne help take the stress out of finding your next team members. For contracts – making sure you and your staff have the appropriate contracts.

Street transformation starts
A series of three-dimensional designs showing the final look for the street outside the Cambridge Pool have been released by Council this week. The designs provide an overview of what Williamson Street in Cambridge will look like once work to redevelop the street is complete. Construction, which has started, involves replacing the road and adding pedestrian crossings and signs. It will be

finished off with landscaping in the lead-up to the opening of the Cambridge Pool. Waipā District Council transportation manager Bryan Hudson said sample buildings had been included in the scene for context, but all other design elements were accurate. “The designs include a series of red raised pedestrian crossings which will improve visibility for drivers and safety for pedestrians, a bus stop to improve accessibility to the pools and angle parking.” He said major progress had already been made since work began last month. “We’d just like to say a big thank you to the residents of

Williamson Street who have been very understanding and patient with us on this project. “At this time, we are now working on the removal of the old footpath and kerb, constructing new catch pits and relocating underground services. Following this, we will start the construction of the new footpath and form the new roadside parking spaces.” The streetscape is expected to be complete by mid-2020, aligning with the expected completion date of the pool project. Refinancing your mortgage is the process of changing your mortgage lending from your existing lender to a new lender. Refinancing is a common practice for any of these reasons: • You don’t like the lender you are with. You’ve experienced poor service, problems with staff, or high account fees. • You want to borrow more money but the lender won’t allow it. Perhaps you want to consolidate debt, borrow to purchase a rental property or a vehicle, or put working capital into a business. • You have ‘outgrown’ your existing lender and want to move forward. This is common for self-employed people with a growing business, or for investors with an increasing portfolio. • Your lender has asked you to refinance. You may be in arrears with mortgage repayments or you need to restructure your mortgage.

Refinancing can involve costs such as break fees from the existing lender, solicitors’ fees, valuation charges etc, but we can help get cash contributions from your new lender to help offset these costs. At Yes Mortgages, we can outline the costs involved and find the best new lender to fit your current situation from the 25 or so different lenders available. In most instances, our service is FREE to you. Generally the benefits of refinancing outweigh the costs involved but bear in mind: Refinancing your mortgage must benefit and add value to YOU. Let us do the work to find you the best lender for your situation.

Recycling: the next stage
Jobs should be created as part of the latest stage of Waipā’s recycling revolution as material is processed in the district. The Waipā District Council moved to kerbside recycling last year and since then has sent the materials for sorting in Auckland. The council’s recycling contractor, Metallic Sweeping Ltd, will open a processing site in Te Awamutu on March 25. “Not only do we expect the centre to create new jobs, it will also provide very specific data and statistics on the quality of the recycling we collect,” Council operations team leader Jennifer Braithwaite said. “We’ll know just how much of the different plastic types are being collected, as well as how much contamination is being placed in the recycling bins. This information will assist us in developing recycling education programmes, which are aimed at teaching people proper ways to recycle.” Mixed recycling will now be separated
into cardboard, paper and plastics and transported directly to the market. Glass recycling will continue to be taken to Auckland for processing. Braithwaite stressed the importance of recycled items being place in the right bin and that items were empty and clean. “Staff have to deal with and touch dirty recycling and contamination directly so it can be really unpleasant for them if people have put landfill items into their recycling bins. We have had several occasions where people have put dirty nappies into their recycling which staff then have to dispose of.” Recycling will be collected from the yellow and blue wheelie bins provided to households as part of Waipā’s recycling service. Residents are not permitted to drop off their recycling directly to the centre. For more information on what can and can’t go in your wheelie bin head to www. waipadc.govt.nz/recycling.

The school will present an unconventional take on Jesus Christ Superstar, said Cook. “It’s never been done before, I can tell you that”, he said. The 70s Broadway rock musical follows Judas Iscariot as he witnesses the last seven days in the life of Christ. Year 11 students Jack Redpath and Josh Bam will take the roles of Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot. Cambridge High plans to bring in a small “ensemble” from the Middle School to help with a matinee performance,as well as CHS students from the Whare Tautoko classes. Cook hopes to push the arts to the forefront of the school. “A musical is a really nice vehicle to do that”, he said. The school will present the matinee performance June 24 and there will be evening performances on June 25 and 27.
IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO ENTER
Superstar returns to stage After a three-year hiatus, Cambridge High School will stage a musical this year. The school’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar will run from June 24 to 27. The school had focused on the Stage Challenge contest for the last three years but “we’re now back with a school musical”, said director Peter Cook. The production features a lead cast of 12 and draws on more than 90 performers from across the school. Larissa Schumacher will be the musical director, and choreography will be by Minette Ferreira. “The musical has big name recognition and the community will really enjoy seeing our school’s version of it” said Gareth Manins, an English teacher at CHS involved in stage management for the production.

Lacrosse teams feature Newcomers among the goals Thomas Purvis and Marcus Bird scored their first goals for Cambridge as the club’s Northern League squads played Otumoetai in a double header of pre-season games. The pair scored for Cambridge’s reserves in their 4-2 loss to the Bay of Plenty visitors. The Reds’ youthful reserves team showed plenty of enthusiasm despite hot and humid conditions at John Kerkhof Park. In the main game, the Reds first team lost 2-0 in a practice match split into three half-hour spells designed to help players and coaches review their progress, as well as manage the heat. Cambridge play their first competition games in football’s Northern League on Saturday March 28.

Lacrosse teams from Cambridge clubs have secured many of top spots in the Waikato Women’s Club Summer League. Kaipaki Phoenix earned themselves a place in final two after knocking out the second-ranked team in a surprise upset in the A-division semi-finals last weekend. Kaipaki Phoenix were Waikato champions in 2018. They lost 14-4 to league favourites Suburbs Falcons - who were unbeaten in their previous 10 games. Kaipaki Phoenix kept the Falcons in check during the early stages of the game, but the balance shifted quickly after they lost a player to injury. In the play-off for third place in the A Division, Cambridge beat Hamilton Devils 19-8. In the B Division final Cambridge B beat Suburbs Hawks 13-9. Charlotte Walker, coach of Cambridge B, said her team showed early nerves. “The Hawks had more hustle and quickly chalked up five goals to one at half time.” Some mental regrouping during the break changed things around for the Cambridge side as they went on to score 12 goals in the second half. The Cambridge team is made up mainly of year Cambridge High School 10 students with a couple of more experienced players. Walker said they had meshed well during the year and developed hugely over the season. In the new C Division, Cambridge was again in the frame, with Cambridge 1 beating Cambridge 2 12-8.

Harrison win helps the cause Cambridge junior driver Alicia Harrison recorded her fifth win for the season when steering home Port Delight to win the Woodlands Stud Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (1750m) at New Plymouth on Saturday, but it meant more to her than most. Harrison has been sporting the Team Teal colours, an initiative aiming to raise funds and awareness for ovarian cancer, for the last month and she was pleased to get up for her first victory in the silks. The Doug Gale-trained mare settled to the rear of the field for Harrison before she was asked to improve three-wide with cover at the 800m mark. Port Delight loomed wide at the turn and was able to run home late to nab The Blue Beat at the line to win by a nose, with a further neck back to Hereslookingatyou in third. Harrison, who is a North Island ambassador for Team Teal alongside fellow Cambridge horsewoman Nicky Chilcott, was pleased with the win and said it was a rewarding experience to help out a worthy cause. “I was lucky enough to be selected as one of the ambassadors this year for the North Island,” she said. “We are trying to raise $40,000. Any money we can raise for research for better diagnostic tests and treatment is really good.” It wasn’t just Harrison who had a huge smile on her face after the victory, her sponsor Ange Herlihy from Arbonne was beaming back in Auckland. “I already have a raceday sponsor, which is Barbara Holmes, but Ange Herlihy was quite keen to sponsor me as well and this gave her the opportunity to support a great cause,” Harrison said. “We raised $420 for the win and I went around the crowd and got another couple of hundred dollars in donations.”

The campaign will run until March 15 and Harrison said she is looking forward to travelling south and meeting up with her fellow ambassadors at Motukarara on the final day. While Harrison was happy to get her first win for Team Teal, she is hoping to add to that tally at her home track on Wednesday. Harrison believes she has a few good chances at Cambridge Raceway’s mid-week meeting but said To Sir With Love will be her best chance of the day. “I have got a couple of nice ones in at Cambridge on Wednesday, but my own horse, To Sir With Love, will probably be my best chance. She has had no luck so far. “If she can lead or settle handy over the sprint (1700m) trip she will be pretty dangerous I would hope. “She went massive two starts back, she actually won the race, she just got it taken off her in the room. “She is a pretty smart horse, so I can see her picking up a few if everything goes to plan.” – Cambridge Raceway

Coromandel oysters in their shells plus wakame — a bright green seaweed — are available from selected supermarkets and fresh fish retailers. Sliced fresh mint leaves can replace the wakame. 2 egg yolks 1/2-1 teaspoon Dijon-style mustard 1-2 teaspoons rice wine vinegar 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1/2 cup canola oil 12 oysters in the half-shell 1 1/2 teaspoons sesame seeds 3 tablespoons marinated wakame Whisk the egg yolks, mustard and vinegar until light in colour. Add the sesame oil then slowly drizzle in the canola oil until a mayonnaise consistency is reached. This can be prepared ahead and refrigerated. Gently rinse the oysters in a bowl of cold water. Loosen the oysters from their shells with a sharp knife. Place a spoonful of sauce on each oyster and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Grill until the sauce has coloured. The oysters will not be cooked, just warmed. Top with the wakame. Serves 4 as a starter.
The IPA was given the traditional seal approval from the Good Local team. It’s a lovely beer and the 5.8% is very evident – though Sawmill, which uses a mix of American Citra and New Zealand cascade hops, says its lower in alcohol than most IPAs. I did feel inclined to check that, and among the boutique offerings in New Zealand I looked at, it certainly is at the lower end of the scale. Having checked the brewery website, I’m keen to test out the East Coast IPA and Passionfruit sour next time we head north to stay with friends. No doubt about it, New Zealand is blessed to have a growing range of boutique breweries, particularly those who attract beer lovers to their homes. Beer O’clock brings together Good Local beer lovers David Mackenzie, Gary Bulling and writer Roy Pilott to discuss one of their favourite subjects. It has switched to a fortnightly format.

OYSTERS WITH JAPANESE SAUCE
Beer there, saw that Beer O’clock well remembers sitting in the hot sun over summer, a Sawmill beer in hand, listening to the screeching Kookaburras. So, when David presented a six pack of Sawmill’s 5.8% India Pale Ale for review by the Good Local team, the memories flooded back. Australian beer you say? Not at all. Sawmill is a 16-year-old brewery at Leigh, Matakana. And in those parts the legacy of Governor George Gray’s actions to populate Kawau Island with exotic flora and fauna is in evidence more than 150 years later as the boisterous Aussie kingfishers make themselves heard. The brewery is worth making some noise about too. The Sawmill Brewery’s Smoko Room is a popular spot for meals and a chance to sample the range on offer. Sawmill produces an excellent 14-strong range from the IPA to a Raspberry Sour from its Leigh Rd home. The brewery moved there in early 2016 from its original base, which had been the site of a former sawmill.

Things to do
(R13)
The summer harvest has faded but festivals celebrating food and wine are still happening all over the country including on our home turf. Feast Waikato — four days and nights of foodie fun commences on Thursday 2 April. First up is a progressive dinner in Hamilton’s CBD. There are a variety of other dining events at eight other restaurants over the four days including pop-up fine dining from the Tauranga team, Kitchen Takeover, and at our local St Kilda Café, top chef Karika Houghton will cook a threecourse meal showcasing local produce. There are several cooking classes throughout the region plus cheesemaking at Over the Moon, Putaruru. Local food producers will feature at various events including Bellefield Butter with their buttermilk and clotted cream at afternoon tea at Our Land of Milk and Honey’s Farm Shed, Maungatautari. Friday will see a line-up along the Waikato river bank of some of the region’s favourite Food Tucks. There are many free events including a cookbook fair, a teddy bear’s picnic, interviews with chefs and advice from gardening guru Lynda Hallinan. For more information visit waikatofoodinc.com/ feastwaikato NB. Many ingredients I used in the following recipes were purchased at our local farmers’ market.

Smith film Touch and go for Tivoli
Waikato motor racing legend Graeme Lawrence will host a special screening of a feature documentary about another Kiwi speedster next week. Ken Smith 60 years at the Wheel screens at the Tivoli in Cambridge next Wednesday. The film follows Smith – who will also be at the screening - on his 60th season of motor racing and talks to his peers David Oxton, Davy Jones, Kevin Bartlett and Lawrence - and the drivers he has mentored, including Brendon Hartley, Greg Murphy, Shane Van Gisbergen and Scott Dixon. Smith’s 60th season – 2017-18 - saw him race his F5000 in his 47th NZ Grand Prix and make his first trip to race at the Laguna Seca track in California. The documentary, which includes clips of Lawrence, 79, and Smith, 76, recalling their rivalry, lasts 90 minutes. The film, by Adam Jones, has played to full houses in Christchurch, Timaru and Invercargill. Smith, who first raced in 1958, won the New Zealand Grand Prix in 1976, 1990, and 2004, the Penang Grand Prix three times, the Selangor Grand Prix twice and the Malaysian Grand Prix. He was awarded the MBE in the 1987 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to motorsport, and in 1995 was inducted into the New Zealand Motorsport Hall of Fame The film will screen at 7pm.
