A woman recognised as much for her wide smile as for her ‘do anything for anyone’ approach to life has become the Cambridge News Person of the Year for 2020. Julie Epps took the news with her characteristic grin. “I’m stunned … really humbled. I would never have expected a nomination for something like this.” Her endearing style blends ‘community sage’ with an uncontrived enthusiasm for everything she does. It has brought Julie into contact with countless appreciative locals over the years, but the way she sees it, she’s just doing what anyone caring about their community would do. “Basically I’m just nosy,” she laughed. “I like to know what’s going on.” Julie caught up with the News after a quick tramping trip to Taranaki with a group of girlfriends; the plan for the rest of the day was gathering donations received in this year’s Cambridge Christmas Cheer initiative. Julie chairs the Cambridge Committee of Social Services (CCOSS) that steers the drive and says the generosity of Cambridge residents never ceases to amaze her. “I am in awe of what everyone on that committee does… the help, the generosity, the support. It’s one of the reasons I really love Christmas.” Masterton-born and raised in Hamilton from the age of seven, Julie completed her education with a Waikato University degree in marketing and German. After that, she worked at Gallagher and then Carter Holt Harvey where she met Cambridge man and husband-to-be Dean. They made Cambridge their home in 1993, a year after they married. The town knows her for her role as CEO of the

CAPTAIN SHAUN BAKER Salvation Army Officer For me, Christmas is and always has been that time of year where family can come together and enjoy each other’s company, eat a nice meal together and swap gifts. It’s never not been a fun time of year for my family. That said, Christmas is not a happy time of year for many. This year some are dealing with the loss of employment, grieving loved ones, dealing with health issues or simply lonely to name a few. While Christmas for me has always been about family, Jesus has never left the centre of why I celebrate. Without Christ, all we have is mas and that’s hardly worth celebrating. I think Jesus would want us, this year especially, to look out for others and support our local communities anyway we can. Let’s bring the hope, peace, love and joy of Christ to others this Christmas. MURRAY SMITH Bridges Church This week I drove past a house that was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The occupants had gone “all out” with Christmas decorating. All kinds of ‘busyness’ - Santas galore, one even poking his head in and out of a Kiwi out-house (WC)! To the credit of these enthusiasts, there was a nativity scene featuring a little animal stable with a
star over it, baby Jesus with Mary, Joseph, and wisemen - all elements conveying the actual Christmas story… the story of a Child born where there was no room for His birth so a stable had to do. Increasingly in our culture there is still scarcely room for Christ the Saviour whose birth Christmas commemorates. Other things have pressed in crowding Him out. That’s a costly omission. This Christmas I hope many will take moments to pause, reflect and place Christ at the centre and find the meaning and purpose He brings to life. ALAM TOPARI Alam is a member of the Muslim community in Cambridge. If only I could turn the clock back. But I have to accept that this is late December 2020. And it is the case that life can only be learnt ‘backward’, to be lived forward. During Level 4 Covid Lockdown I rejoiced as I always relish solitude where I am on my own… but the sense too, of not being alone. I sat many hours outside, night after night watching the stars. “Well,” I would say to myself, “if Covid 19 wipes many out there’s many more who will be alright.” While PM Jacinda Ardern called the Christchurch event of March 2019 New Zealand’s darkest moment, I could see clearly its silver lining. It reinforced, cemented and made us who and what we are. What a blessing to be a Kiwi…The “High Above” created a ‘down to earth bird’ and I’m a privileged member with ngākau, upoko and mana serving as an inspiration for the world to emulate. Insha Allah - God willing. FR MALCOLM FRENCH St Andrews, Cambridge O that birth forever blessèd, when the Virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bore the saviour of our race; and the babe, the world’s redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore! We approach the mystery of the Word made flesh, where God, the fullness of God entered into our finite humanity as a little baby, born of a virgin, born in poverty. May God pour his grace into all our hearts, that as we have known of the coming of his Son through the

message of angels, so may we come to know, by his Cross, the glory of his resurrection. Meri Kirihimete! Merry Christmas! JULIE GUEST St John’s Anglican Church Do you usually go home for Christmas? Or is yours the home others come back to for the celebration? Is home somewhere you can’t travel to in 2020? Or are you going to be missing loved ones due to travel restrictions? Home is a powerful word. What first comes to mind when you think of home? For many there will be ideas of comfort, of family, of safety. But we know that is not the case for far too many. Home is dangerous, a place to escape from not to. “Come home,” says the Lord to us at Christmas time. Some people think of God as “up there and far away,” but Jesus’ birth brings God down here and with us. God made his home here on earth, among us. We are at home with God as soon as we ask to be. If your home this Christmas feels empty, come home in your heart to God who is waiting for you. PASTOR JONATHAN RUTHVEN Cambridge Baptist Church In the lead up to Christmas many social commentators have been asking how we can wholeheartedly celebrate Christmas when much of the world is still in the grip of Covid-19. While such questions are understandable, they reveal a misunderstanding of why we celebrate Christmas. Christmas is not so much a celebration of what is now, although I think we have much to celebrate, but a celebration of what is to come. It is a way of remembering that because of Jesus’ coming 2000 years ago we can have genuine confidence that when he returns he will usher in a time of unending peace and joy for those who have placed their trust in him. That is why throughout history Christians have shown remarkable determination and resilience in celebrating Christmas in times of crisis because when the darkness seems to be getting a foothold we all need to remember that something better is to come. Have a blessed and joyful Christmas

1080 fall out
The Waikato Regional Council has has criticised a contractor who continued a 1080 drop targetting wallabies at Horahora despite knowing a bulldozer was operating in the aea. Waikato Regional Council chair Russ Rimmington said he had been briefed by staff. “This council has very high standards and we have been utterly let down by a contractor’s lack of judgment,” he said. Two dogs fell sick, and one died, following the drop. The council said the dog owners had been forewarned about the drop.

A Cambridge woman who almost died in June has reconnected with the ‘good Samaritan’ who saved her life, and the police constable who helped it happen. The three women – Gaye Hutton, her *555 angel Jessica O’Hara, and Cambridge Police senior constable Casey Walker – reunited for the first time since the incident that almost claimed Gaye’s life. On Monday June 29 Gaye woke up feeling dreadful and with a swollen face after days spent battling a tooth infection. She decided the best option would be to head for her workplace, a doctor’s surgery in Hamilton. “I thought if I could just get there, I’d be OK.” Jessica pulled out behind Gaye on the outskirts of town. “She veered right off the road and on to the grass. There was obviously something wrong. I kept following her… she was going about 100kph in peak hour traffic, weaving all over the place.” On the advice of her partner, she dialled her first *555 and then
stayed on the line. The report tracks Gaye’s dangerous drive and Jessica’s obvious concern. Another driver also rang *555 after narrowly avoiding being hit. Casey, who was tasked with stopping Gaye, finally caught up with her at Riverlea. “As soon as I stopped the vehicle, I could see she was seriously unwell.” All Gaye remembers is the overwhelming relief at hearing the siren and seeing the police car lights behind her. “I thought ‘thank God someone has come to save me’. She asked for my driver’s licence and my keys and called for an ambulance. The next thing I remember is waking up in hospital two days later.” Gaye needed emergency surgery, but “between the x-rays and the ultrasound I apparently stopped breathing … they had to intubate me,” she said, pointing to scars on her throat. “In the end I had two teeth removed and was told the sepsis was just 2cm away from my heart.” When she finally woke up, Casey and her police partner visited to see

how she was. Gaye spent 10 days in hospital and had to take a month off work. Gaye’s good luck that day isn’t lost on her. “I don’t normally go to work on Mondays. If I had been at home, I would likely have died there.” Casey said it was the first such incident for her in 15 years of police work. Her approach at the time, and in subsequent visits, has warmed
Gaye’s heart. She has caught up with Casey on several occasions, and although she has seen Jessica in town and returned her cheery ‘hello, how are you’, Gaye had absolutely no idea who she was. She asked Casey if she could meet her *555 angel – hence last week’s meeting over Christmas mince pies. “She saved my life … I dread to think what would have happened if she hadn’t made that call,” said Gaye.

If 2020 has been one thing, it has been memorable. The team at the Cambridge News and Te Awamutu News gathered this week as we prepared our final editions of 2020 to reflect on the challenges, the highs and the lows. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege for me to get back to Good Local (pun intended) news reporting and filling pages with news about people you know and stories that reflect our community. They reflect our community because they are part of it. You have read the words of Viv Posselt, Steph Bell Jenkins, Jan Bilton, Julie Guest, Peter Carr, Murray Smith, Peter Matthews, Matteo di Maio, Deb Thurgood, Ryan Fleming, Harriet Dixon, Ben Carey and Jeremy Smith throughout the year – and I for one have marvelled at
their versatility and ability to find news and or make us think. Your sports codes have been served brilliantly by the likes of Josh Easby, Sheryll Whitt, Harriet Lamb, Justin Miezenbeek, Dave Peters and Nigel Kewish. Photographer Arthur Uden has always been happy to share his

decade ago, and her busy family life, encompassing Dean and their boys. “They are fantastic … Dean supports me in everything. He’s always there when I need something.” She has a knack for selling ideas and raising funds when the need is right. “One of the highlights was when we did a fundraising historic Cambridge calendar one year, for the boys’ school. That was huge fun.” That calendar set her up for future marketing gigs, all of which were tested at the ‘mind-blowing’ World Rowing Championships in 2010, when she was steering Cambridge’s Business Chamber. “That brought all my skills into play.” With all the balls she bounces, it comes as a surprise that she has never stood for the Waipā District Council. “I’ve never really wanted to. I enjoyed the community board when I was on it,” she said. “I know I have to love what I do, and what I do I love.”

Three go to the head of the class By Matteo Di Maio
St Peter’s Catholic Primary is a small school, of under 200 students has produced head students for three Waikato high schools in 2021. Elsie Williams, Gemma Hall and Rory MacGillivray have each secured leading roles at their respective high schools. Williams will be heading Cambridge High as head girl next year, while MacGillivrary will be joining head girl Meghana Gaddam to fill the top spot at St Peter’s Private. Hall was recently
named Sacred Heart Girls’ College’s 2021 head girl. Williams and Hall had their first stint at leadership in 2016, when they were both a part of St Peter’s Catholic teacher Susie McCreery’s year 7 and 8 class, as Student Councillors. “They were the sort of kids that made the most of every opportunity at school,” McCreery remembered. Williams attended St Peter’s Catholic, which runs from years 1 to 8, all the way through, while Hall joined later as a year 4 after
McCreery’s 2016 class. Elsie Williams, now CHS head girl, is top left, back row, Gemma Hall, head girl at Sacred Heart, is second from the right in the front row.

moving up from Gore in the South Island. MacGillivray started in year 1 and left as a year 6 in 2014. All three were taught at different times by either McCreery or Denise Gordon, another senior-student teacher at the school. Both remember the students as constantly being at the forefront of school life, even then. Both MacGillivray and Williams excelled at school speeches and bible readings, McCreery said. And, if there was one event that really showed the class of 2016’s potential, it was the bi-yearly musical production — that year: Annie. Hall took a leading role as an Orphan, while Williams took
the titular role of Annie. So, is there a St Peter’s touch, then? If there is, McCreery said, it’s in the school’s performing arts repertoire; something that includes everything from kapa haka to bible reading. “They were presenting at information evenings, busking in town, and performing [as an entire class] at the first Cambridge Kapa Haka competition in 2016.” What makes the school’s public speaking programme unique, McCreery said, is the fact that it starts young. Williams and Hall may have starred in Annie as leading roles in 2016. But they, like all St Peter’s Catholic students, were a part of the production from
age 5 up. To illustrate: McCreery points to the school’s younger classes, where year 4, 5 and 6s regularly read in front of large audiences at school mass. A small roll also has its benefits, said Gordon, who taught Hall, Williams and MacGillivray earlier on at St Peter’s Catholic. “It’s about giving every child opportunities,” she said. “As a small school, we can ensure everyone gets a chance to try everything, be it performing arts or Stem (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) competitions.” “You just wouldn’t get that in a bigger school.”

Five Cambridge classmates have won a nationwide design competition. Rose Hobbs, Hayley
$200 for themselves in the Rock Our Future competition. Run by the Aggregate and Quarry Association, the contest challenged year 5-8 students to turn a former quarry into a community asset. Rose, Hayley and Jake formed one team, designing a community house where homeless people and families could live, while Theodore and Flynn joined forces to create a New Zealand history museum concept. Both groups designed their projects on iPads, using the Minecraft computer game to bring their ideas to life in the virtual world. “I wanted to beat Flynn and Theo, like really badly,” said Rose, who thanked her dog for helping her deal with the stress of competing with her classmates. She had been shaking with nerves before AQA CEO Wayne Scott, who had visited the students to review their project in November, announced the results via a video recording on a big screen in the school hall last Thursday. The two Leamington teams each won one of four $1100 national prizes, with Newbury School in

on “something that involves a lot of sugar”. The students’ teacher, Elizabeth Davies, believes they stood out because they had “used their creativity to design something new and different”. “I am so stoked for each and every one of them,” she said. “A lot of sporting
achievements are recognised but often it’s not the academic competitions that are recognised so it’s nice for something other than sport to be in the limelight.” The students thanked Mrs Davies for her “amazing support” and also Wayne Scott and the AQA committee for their generosity.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 23, 2020
Season’s greetings… JEFF PARKER Pastor, Elim Church Centre When I think Christmas, I think hope. Hope has been described as ‘a confident expectation of good’. Maybe especially in 2020, we all need hope. It makes such a difference to our lives. The Bible communicates that God has plans to give you hope. Jesus made the way for this hope to be realised. He was born to Mary in Bethlehem that first Christmas morning. As He grew He displayed the character and nature of God in all He did. At 33 He was crucified and later rose from the dead. The Bible tells us He died to take away the sin of the world. To all who receive Him and Trust Him with their lives, He offers forgiveness for our wrongs, a relationship with Him here and now, and a welcome into His presence when we leave this life. That is hope for the future, and hope for today.
and
CHARMAINE GILLAM Family Church It is Christmas time again, even though it has been a crazy year. As we celebrate Christmas with family and friends, around BBQ’s, dinner tables, or at the beach, we remind ourselves of how much we value, love, and appreciate one another. We also remind ourselves of the divine birth of Jesus Christ, our Immanuel (which means “God with us”), our Lord. Thanking God, for loving us as so much, “… that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16,17. During this Christmas season, we thank Jesus Christ for not only taking our sins away, but for allowing us to become members of His family. We are never alone, for He is always with us.
JEREMY LIND Raleigh St Christian Centre On behalf of Raleigh St Christian Centre I would like to wish everyone a lovely Christmas. It has been a challenging year and a common refrain I am hearing from people is that they are very weary. I pray that if you are feeling this way that you will have a time of physical and mental refreshment over the summer. As Christians we remember the Birth of our King Jesus. As someone who experienced the reality of living on this earth he came with an invitation to a disenchanted world: ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’ May you know the thrill of Hope found in the person of Jesus this festive season.

Community House extension complete
The completion of Cambridge Community House’s (CCH) new building extension was celebrated by around 75 people who attended a special blessing last week. Guests at the early morning event walked through the new building and shared a breakfast donated by Absolute Coffee House. Those attending included funders, friends of the House, past and current team members and volunteers. “All of them have played a pivotal role in making this project a huge success,” CCH manager Harriet Dixon said. “It has been a true collaboration; finally we have a community house built for its purpose.” The building, which cost about $500,000, would help meet the current demand for services. “Since the beginning of the year, we have seen a huge increase in need… double
the demand in some areas. That is due to an increase in population, Covid-19, and a growth in awareness in our community for the services and support we provide. It is vital that our community
knows we are here to support them in their time of need.” She said assistance would be needed on an ongoing basis. “We need community support … donations of
money, of time volunteering or things like food, to ensure we can continue to provide our services.” Those happy to help can phone 07 827 5402 for details.

Suburbs celebrate lacrosse treble
Suburbs Falcons sealed their third consecutive A Division win last weekend in the Waikato Lacrosse Women’s Club League with a 16-11 win over Cambridge TVP Titans. The two sides had met twice during round-robin games for one win apiece. In the final, Suburbs slowly pulled ahead after tit-for-tat goals during the early stages. Kaipaki Phoenix completed the A Division in third place after winning beating Te Awamutu Sports Lions by 155. Cambridge TVP Lacrosse showed its strength and depth by winning gold in both the Women’s Club League B and C Divisions. In the B Division finals, TVP Young Guns were matched against the Suburbs Hawks for what turned into a cliff-hanger of a game. Any progress by one side on the scoreboard was quickly levelled by the other to full-time, and the scores were tied at full time. TVP Young Guns scored the Golden Goal to win the closest match of the day. In the C Division, TVP Liberty beat TVP Saints 9-6.
The NZBlax, the New Zealand Senior Women’s team, also returned to Tamahere Park on Saturday to play their second invitational match against a Waikato combined team as part of their preparations for the World Lacrosse Championships in 2021. The match completed the Waikato Lacrosse calendar for 2020. Waikato Lacrosse Men’s Club League will start against in January, with their finals

New year nibbles
Do we ‘Ring in the New Year’ or ‘Bring in the New Year’? Well, despite the debate at the dinner table last night, we were all correct. Ringing in the New Year refers to the old tradition of bell ringing to announce the end of the old year and herald the start of the new one. Bringing in the New Year refers to ushering in a new beginning. And as we all join hands on the dot of midnight and mumble Auld Lang Syne — even if we don’t know more than the first few words — does anyone know the song’s origin? In 1788 it was adapted by poet Robert Burns from a Scottish folk song he heard sung by an old Scotsman. It reminisces about the good old days and friendships. A timely reminder to send a friend or family member a friendly text or better still invite them for a drink. Of course, with those celebratory drinks, a nibble of something delicious to cement the friendship should be served — just in case more than one sip is savoured. As a guide, a selection of four to five canapés or nibbles should be served during the first hour of your gathering plus four pieces per person each hour after that. Happy New Year! BACON-WRAPPED LYCHEES I served these nibbles with the sticks inserted into a cucumber. Many guests thought they were scallops! The centres could, alternatively, be filled with crystallised ginger. The drained lychee juice is excellent in cocktails. 560g can lychees, drained well 200g streaky bacon, rashers halved lengthwise 3-4 tablespoons cream cheese Fill the lychees with about a teaspoon of cream cheese. Wrap securely in a strip of bacon and secure with a long cocktail stick. Pan-fry or grill for about 2-3 minutes each side. Serve warm or at room temperature. Makes about 16. CITRUS-ROASTED OLIVES Extremely moreish, these olives also make delicious gifts. 470g jar (2 cups) super colossal pitted green olives 2 cloves garlic, sliced 4 x 4cm thin strips each: lemon peel, orange peel
Bacon-wrapped lychees
Citrus-roasted olives
freshly ground black pepper to taste 3 tablespoons olive oil plus extra for storing 1 tablespoon fennel seeds 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar Preheat the oven to 190°C. Place the olives, garlic, citrus peel and black pepper in a single layer in a roasting pan. Drizzle with the 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a roasting pan. Stir to mix well. Roast for 15 minutes stirring once or twice. Divide the olive mixture between 2-3 small jars. Add fennel seeds to each. Add the vinegar and cover with olive oil. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks. Makes 2 cups.
Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and add the shallots Cover and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until soft and light brown. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in another pan. Ad the eggplant and stir over low heat, until soft and cooked Combine with the shallots. Cool slightly. Add the egg yoghurt and walnuts. Spread over the pizza base right to the edge. Sprinkle wit the cheese. Place on the hot oven tray and bake for 15-2 minutes or until golden. Great garnished with fresh thym sprigs. Serves 8 as a nibble.
SHALLOT & EGGPLANT TART 400g eggplant, peeled and diced 1 tablespoon flaky sea salt 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 10 large shallots, thinly sliced 1 egg 2 tablespoons plain yoghurt 1/4 cup walnuts, finely chopped 23cm uncooked, thin pizza base 50g smoked cheese, grated Place the eggplant on paper towels. Sprinkle with the salt to soften. Stand for 20 minutes. Pat dry. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Place a baking tray in the oven to heat.
