Lockdown: the farming norm By Mary Anne Gill

A Waipā dairy farmer has compared the Covid 19 Delta strain outbreak to foot and mouth disease saying both ruin economies if not managed properly. Jennie Macky, 46, who is also a dairy cattle veterinarian, farms at Parawera with husband James Kinston and their five children. They own Teaser Bull, a business which uses teaser bulls to detect cows on heat. The couple met in the United Kingdom 20 years ago where Jennie was working as a locum vet in Cumbria during an outbreak of

foot and mouth disease. “I slaughtered cows for three months. It was awful. It’s a life experience I will never forget.” She compared its impact to Covid 19 today. “When you’re living in it, and you are doing it day to day, you just need good strong people to make good, structured decisions to get the job done. “I was literally walking in and killing perfectly healthy stock. The farmers were accepting so long as someone explained it to them and was upfront and honest with them. “You couldn’t afford to let it run rampant, so you had to do what

you had to do.” Both Delta and foot and mouth are airborne viruses. “Foot and mouth to a farmer in New Zealand is unthinkable.” So, what is life like in lockdown for the Kinston family? Because it is spring, a traditionally busy time on any New Zealand farm, there was nothing about the lockdown which was having an impact on them other than the children were all home and able to help on the farm. “For farmers, this is what we train every year for. Right now, sheep farmers are in lambing and we’re in calving,” says Macky.

Jennie Macky with Fred, her 1-year-old labradoodle.

“This is when the pay cheques start rolling in, the grass is starting to grow.” Milk is going out and feed is coming in, she said. “It’s quite normal for us to be locked in at home, only working and living with our family, not going to town and not seeing people “When people question mental health in the rural industry and why is it so high, this is why.” Given the mental stress lockdowns have had on urban people, it’s timely to point out that way of life is something rural people face regularly. Macky was brought up on a

When the relationship between the couple started in the UK, she was quite blunt. “I said to him: ‘I’m never going to live in the UK so if this relationship is going anywhere, you have to pack your bags and leave’.” Kinston, who was brought up on a dairy farm near Burton-onTrent, had studied agricultural engineering a profession which makes him invaluable on the couple’s Parawera farm. Thanks from the miners We are very grateful for the excellent article researched and published by Mary Anne Gill in both the Cambridge and Te Awamutu News on August 19. As a not-for-profit community service run by the Rotary clubs of both Cambridge and Te Awamutu, we need all the help we can get to maximise the community’s awareness of what we do. As stated in the article, some charges do apply when the public bring along their e-waste to our monthly collection events in Cambridge and Te Awamutu. We can accept some items for free and one or two carry higher fees, but for most fees are very low. We are trying to encourage the community to understand that comprehensive, environmentally responsible recycling cannot be carried out at no cost. Our mission is to divert e-waste from landfills and we appreciate the support we have had from both communities to date. Publicising our service and activities is a key part of our work. We are currently looking for an experienced marketing and promotions person to join our management team. As with all other roles in Urban Miners, this would be a volunteer role which we expect may demand about three hours a week. People who may be interested can contact us through our Facebook page. A recent initiative is to increase the recycling of household batteries. We now have a “battery bottle” label for the public to purchase. This is available at any of our collection events or from the I-Sites in Cambridge and Te Awamutu. This provides a convenient means of collecting and storing old batteries so we can responsibly recycle them. Thanks again for your support. As reported in the article, it is important for us all to do the right thing. E-waste does not belong in household rubbish and landfills. Mark Hanlon, Chair, Rotary Urban Miners.

Pet refuge opens doors By Viv Posselt

Pet Refuge, New Zealand’s new first shelter for pets affected by family violence, is already taking in animals, including from the Waikato. The purpose-built shelter in rural Auckland opened this month. Among the groups that helped the Pet Refuge New Zealand Charitable Trust bring the project to fruition is the Cambridge Rotary Club, which donated $18,000 from funds raised at its annual Charity Dinner in April. Pet Refuge spokesperson Sarah Stewart said the shelter has helped 12 animals from around New Zealand, including a case from Waikato. A safe farm network is on standby to care for larger animals. Pet Refuge is the second charity launched by Julie Chapman, founder and CEO of KidsCan, which helps children in hardship. After her parents died, she used funds from the sale of their home to purchase land for the shelter. “They would be very happy that the money they left is doing something which could be life-changing for these animals and their owners. We have horrifying rates of family violence in New Zealand, and pets often bear the brunt of that. Animals are harmed or threatened by perpetrators to control their victims.” The shelter will house up to 75 animals until they can be reunited with

Pet Refuge founder Julie Chapman in the new shelter.

their owners in a violence-free home, and will offer veterinarian care and therapy. Women’s Refuge, which supports Pet Refuge, said a survey of victims who had experienced animal abuse found 53 percent delayed leaving out of fear for their animal’s safety, and 73 percent would have found it easier to leave if there was a shelter offering temporary accommodation for their animals. Women’s Refuge chief executive Dr Ang Jury acknowledged that pets make it harder for people to remove themselves and their children from violent households. “With the opening of Pet Refuge this is one more barrier that could be removed.” Animals will be referred by police and family violence agencies. People can support the refuge with a one-off donation or $25 a month. Go to www.petrefuge.org.nz or call 09 975 0850.

Hello from lockdown v2.0 To say the last week has been quite a different week is an understatement, after months of relative freedom. While I have been working during lockdown, it has been good to see so many people being organised with face masks, adhering to social distancing and the lockdown guidelines. I also appreciate my fellow essential workers who are ensuring that our emergency and healthcare services, supermarkets, and other key services run smoothly. Thank you. With the added stress of the lockdown, we are seeing an increase in household conflict and associated calls for Family Ham incidents. If you hear family harm in your neighbourhood, a call to Police will ensure that the family receives all support possible. If you feel unsafe yourself, call 111. If you cannot make call yourself, text or call a friend to do it for you. You are allowed to leave your bubble if you are worried about your safety. Self-care is important at this time as

lockdown affects everyone differently. Be aware that those in your bubble (and outside of it) may be feeling more anxious and stressed than normal, which could cause them to react differently to things. Let’s all try to show a little more compassion and understanding accordingly. Keeping up social contact through phone calls and video chats with friends and family can reduce isolation for those on their own. Exercise is also good for mental health, getting outside for a walk and relaxation or a run, can help. Be kind to yourself, manage expectations and try not to feel that you have to ‘do it all’. Everyone reacts differently to such a situation – lockdown is not easy. If you need to talk, remember that you can text or call 1737 to talk confidentially to a trained counsellor 24/7. If you are struggling financially, Cambridge Community House can assist with food. The main thing is to take the step and reach out for help.

While under level 4, it is important that we limit travel where possible. When jumping in your car, consider whether it really is essential for you to make the trip and if so, whether it has to happen right then. If going to the supermarket, try to do a bigger shop. if possible, rather than several trips for just a few items and have only one household member going if at all possible. Remember your bubble is your bubble. For families who are sharing custody of children, two bubbles can be combined allowing adherence to parenting orders and agreements whilst under level 4. For full information, go to https://www.justice. govt.nz/about/news-and-media/covid19-news/guidance-for-managing-sharedcustody/. Look after each other, be kind and stay safe, Deb.

Briefs… Your News Good Local Media is continuing to bring local news to Cambridge and Te Awamutu during the lockdown. Publisher David Mackenzie said about a third of last week’s printed papers were delivered. “We are able to make rural deliveries and make bulk drop offs at this time, but not urban letterbox deliveries – we do hope, though, to eventually deliver all papers at Level 3 because our product is uniquely local news and advertising and remains relevant.” He said it was not possible to allow individuals to take bundle of papers to deliver under Lockdown rules. You can find exclusive Cambridge and Te Awamutu News at cambridgenews.nz and teawamutunews.nz Daffodil day update The Cancer Society is calling for online help after Covid forced the cancellation of its street collection this week. Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society chief executive Shelley Campbell said while the cancellation was a disappointing blow “the street collection is cancelled, but Daffodil Day isn’t.” Donations can be made at www. daffodilday.org.nz. Rates help Waipā District Council says it wants to hear from ratepayers who cannot make payments online ahead of the next penalty date, next Monday. “With the current lockdown conditions under Level 4, we know that means there are a few ratepayers who can’t come into council premises and pay at the counter as they normally would,” chief financial officer Ken Morris said. Rubbish collections Waipā District Council’s recycling collection service will continue as normal under all Covid-19 Alert Levels, except for the assisted/narrow street service which is on hold during Alert Level 4 due to the manual handling required.

Three waters It’s the Lions’ share doubts rise By Mary Anne Gill

Taranaki-King Country MP Barbara Kuriger says she understands why mayors like Waipā’s Jim Mylchreest are coming out against the government’s Three Waters Review. She just wishes more councils would do likewise rather than sit back and wait to see what happens. The government is reviewing how to improve the regulation and supply arrangements of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater (three waters). Most three waters assets and services are owned and delivered by local councils. The government’s plan is to merge 67 different water organisations currently run by councils, into just four and transfer all council water assets to a new national water regulator Taumata Arowai – which would set the standards for quality. Four mega water authorities would own and manage the water services on behalf of local councils. Mylchreest told The News the reforms were a “nonsense”. At least two other mayors in Waikato are advocating a referendum on the issue. Waipā is set to receive just under $21 million as part of a $2.5 billion Three Waters package for local governments. “What worries me if you’ve got councils coming out in favour of Three Waters,” said Kuriger. They were the ones who had not been as forward thinking as Waipā in installing water meters and funding water provision appropriately. Kuriger is also annoyed about the Water Services Bill which would see Taumata Arowai registering about 70,000 rural water schemes throughout New Zealand. Each would require safety and risk management plans. “The bill will also affect holiday homeowners sharing a bore, marae and subdivision water schemes,” said Kuriger. “National managed to secure some concessions during the Select Committee process re this last bill, but we’re fearful of the compliance costs and administration burdens this will create for farmers and growers, while any supposed safety gains will be minimal.” Urban areas and cities like Auckland, which takes water from the Waikato River to meet demand, were starting to think more about water storage. Perhaps the trend away from installing buried water tanks into new builds might swing back in order to capture more rainwater, she said.

The new Cambridge Lions leadership team, from left, treasurer Allan Field, first vice-president Elbé Moreland, president Warren Beard, and secretary Julie Mayes.

By Viv Posselt

Cambridge Lions’ new president Warren Beard is taking a three-pronged approach to his role at the top – share, care and serve. Keenly aware that many of the club’s 88 members are either retired or semi-retired, he wants to see more load-sharing in the club. “It is important that nothing weighs too heavily on any single individual… that we share the load and share the knowledge we have as a group,” he said. “We also need to support each other more in doing that.” Warren has already put succession planning in place. He has installed five vicepresidents to help spread the workload. His own first vice-president, Elbé Moreland, will undergo training in Christchurch in October. Warren took over as president from Jan Howie on July 1 and he brings to the table a skillset based on 43 years spent in the teaching profession and about 30 as a Lion. Those early years as a Lion in Reporoa with a young family were challenging. Even so, he was president of the Reporoa Lions twice. “Lions has a ‘family first, Lions second’

approach, and I understand the difficulties in being time-poor as a member with a young family. There are other priorities, and we want people to parent their children first. But I would like to use my term to attract new members, perhaps in their 50s, people whose children have left home and who still have the drive and energy to put something back into the community.” He wants to work more of the Lions International history and focus into meetings, saying not everyone appreciates the link to the international organisation, or what work they have done around the world. He is proud of the Lions’ contribution. “We gave over $250,000 to the community last year and will likely well exceed that in the next Lions year,” he said. “The Cambridge community supports us hugely, and that lets us give that support back. Apart from the local organisations, we also give something to Lions International each year – so we give internationally, nationally and at local level. “We’re doing more and more in the community with each passing year … and we’re increasingly needed out there.”

St Andrew’s Parish celebrations postponed By Viv Posselt

Uncertainty over Covid restriction levels has resulted in St Andrew’s Parish postponing celebrations marking its 150th anniversary. Sesquicentennial celebrations were set to take place at Cambridge’s St Andrew’s Church from August 27 through to September 4. David McCathie, the parish’s sesquicentennial committee chair, said the committee met last Saturday afternoon to chart the way forward in the wake of an extended Level 4 lockdown.

“We have made the decision to postpone the sesquicentennial celebrations. We do not know yet when we will have them in the future,” he said. “As the containment of the virus is top priority for us all, it is in the best interest of the community to postpone.” He said there were concerns that Covid alert levels could change plans for the celebratory events. “We need to go to Level 1 by the week in which they start, otherwise we are totally restricted by numbers. There are only 10 people at a gathering at Level 3, and 100 at a gathering at

Level 2 with one-metre social distancing.” Stalling major local events isn’t new for David. Last year, as chairman of the Cambridge Autumn Festival committee, he had to cancel the 2020 Autumn Festival on the back of the first Covid Level 4 lockdown. That event returned in March this year, outstripping previous years in terms of attendance. The St Andrew’s Parish sesquicentennial line-up of public events was planned to mark 150 years from September 3, 1871, the date on which a group of laymen met to establish a parish in the area.

Lockdown: Riding out the lockdown the farming norm

CAMBRIDGE NEWS | 5

Continued from page 1

“Anything agricultural, he can fix. He can weld, he can design, anything engineering, he’s onto it.” Macky uses her veterinarian skills on the animals and has no sympathy for anti vaxxers. “Getting people and animals vaccinated as quick as they can be is important. “There’s loads of diseases out there in the animal industry if you’re not vaccinating, it’s not worth seeing.” The irony is not lost on her that the UK struggles to recognise the importance of vaccinations in agriculture but is ahead of New Zealand when it comes to humans. “We know that in England, their human medicine is well above what we’ve got.” The role of animals during Covid lockdowns around the world has been celebrated. Macky said that is no surprise to her. “This is the cool thing about animals, they love you unconditionally and they’re always there but right now humans require them more. That contact. Animals are cool.” And what about the whole family being home? “We have said more than once, isn’t it grand to have such a big family? They just get on so well. It’s brilliant having heaps of kids. “We’re all working really hard; James and I are working two farms and it doesn’t hurt the kids to see this part of life. “There’s not a lot of schoolwork going on though.” Life on a Parawera farm, just another normal day in lockdown.

Cyclists have been quick to take advantage of Cambridge’s streets during the latest Lockdown. Vehicles on the roads were few and far between – most heading to the supermarkets and dairies; others to pharmacies and vaccination centres.

A rural death spiral: Mayor

By Mary Anne Gill

Rural New Zealand is keeping New Zealand afloat, yet the government continues to strip services away from rural heartland communities like Cambridge and Te Awamutu. That’s a big concern for Waipā mayor Jim Mylchreest who in a wide-ranging interview with The News has spoken of his frustration at the impact of centralisation decisions. “We still can’t get drivers’ licence tests in Cambridge for example. “We’ve offered to help pay for the services. I write to them, the minister, said we would make provisions in our (council) offices and they use all sorts of crazy excuses,” said Mylchreest.

Cambridge used to have practical driving services provided to them, but now must travel to Hamilton, Te Awamutu or Tokoroa. Cambridge VTNZ stopped providing a restricted and full licence service in 2012 when Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said the roads were not complex enough and they could provide the service cheaper from Hamilton. “The cost to a licence may be cheaper for them but they don’t take into account the user costs…the parents taking a day off work to take their children to Tokoroa or Hamilton. “It’s a nonsense. The best way to learn is to practice and get basic competence in the area you live and get tested there,” he said.

Policing is another one which Mylchreest struggles with but has come to accept. There is no longer 24/7 presence at Cambridge Police Station. Police have told Mylchreest they can best serve the community by having police around the region. “They say they can get resources to the problem more than they used to be able to when you’re relying on someone sitting in the police station. And I get that.” He said he was still concerned at the increase in crimes such as ram raids on local businesses and would continue to advocate strongly. “It’s just another example. We keep gutting communities of government

departments, banks and maternity hospitals. Now the high schools can’t attract teachers, because anyone who’s got any money sends their kids away. The schools can’t offer the course and it’s become a death spiral. “New Zealand has had to subsidise some of those rural areas but now it is rural New Zealand keeping us afloat,

Youth awards put on hold

The Waipā Youth Awards ceremony has been cancelled for a second year in succession – and a decision has yet to be made on how the winners will be announced. The event was scheduled for Thursday this week when, from 97 nominations 52 awards were to be made. “Once we’re through this current round of restrictions we’ll decide whether to reschedule the awards night

or announce the award winners digitally as we did in 2020,” Waipā mayor Jim Mylchreest said. The awards, open to students aged 14-18 who live or have attended school in Waipā, celebrate achievement in academia, arts and culture, community service, leadership and sport. Last year the awards night was cancelled due to restrictions around mass gatherings and head students from Te Awamutu College, Cambridge

Cambridge Tree Trust

Jim Mylchreest

High School and St Peter’s, Cambridge created a video recognising the top achievers. Jim Mylchreest said having the awards ceremony cancelled for a second year was unfortunate but necessary. “It’s a real shame that we need to cancel the awards evening, however we still want to make sure our exceptional young people are celebrated as they have contributed so much to our schools and communities over the last year.”

yet the services are not there anymore.” Mylchreest, who last week announced he was seeking another term as mayor, said centralisation of services could leave some people in

Waipā communities with no employment options. “Then you can just see wasted lives, they get into trouble, they drive without licences and then…what a waste.”

Get gardening

A monthly gardening column, courtesy of Amber Garden Centre Pruning- Complete any pruning that has not yet been done on a dry day. Hedges- Regular light pruning is more beneficial than heavy cutting. This causes less stress on the plants and helps to develop denser foliage. Spraying- It’s critical at this time of the year. Spray liquid copper pre bud burst and ten days later, or following rain. This is to prevent leaf curl, black spot and shot hole on your fruit trees. Codlin moth- Are not a problem until September/ October. Pheromone traps can be used to indicate the presence of male moths. It’s then time to spray with Yates Success Ultra which is derived from natural soil bacteria, or use Pyrethrum. Strawberry- Plants are alliable now. Plant them in fertile, free draining soil in a full sun position. Plant 30cm apart and mulch with pea straw or jute matting. This helps to keep the berries clean and suppresses weeds. Feed with Tui Strawberry food. Vegetables- Get the garden ready, dig over, compost and add sheep pallets and it will be good to go. Plant peas, broad beans, carrots, spinach, silver beet and brassicas outside now. Inside in trays start sowing tomatoes, chillies and capsicum as it is still too cold outside for germination. Those will small gardens can still enjoy their own fruit. Blueberries are a great addition and can be grown in pots. There are also great varieties of dwarf nectarines and peaches available now. Happy gardening.

Security cameras quality debated Councillors have taken staff to task over the standards of CCTV cameras in the Waipā district. But the system is a “work in progress” and the council is on the right track, Transportation Manager Bryan Hudson told last week’s Service Delivery Committee meeting. Questions were raised by Roger Gordon, who suggested the district was being monitored by cameras which were not fit for purpose. At issue was that only a small number of PTZ – pan, tilt and zoom - cameras were in use. Other cameras do not have the same capability to pick up specific details such as number plates. Those cameras were up high, surveying an entire intersection, and when pictures were enlarged, they pixilated. Mr Hudson said there was a conscious decision to have some PTZ and some fixed cameras and at tender time it was evident the budget would extend to 13 cameras, not the originally planned for 19.

“So, there were some decisions made around which cameras could be installed and which would have to wait for another day.” Two PTZ cameras were in use in Te Awamutu and one in Cambridge. Cr Gordon said the council set minimum expectations and one was identifying vehicle plates and persons, “and what I’m hearing is that functionality was not achieved.” Mr Hudson said there was a lot of misunderstanding around the requirements. It had been decided to get some PTZ cameras, but the council did not get everything it wanted. He acknowledged there had been compromise.

Goat hunting comp canned The inaugural Feral Goat Hunting Competition planned by the Department of Conservation (Doc) and New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) has been cancelled. The re-emergence of Covid-19 came just a few days after the start of the goat hunting competition. The competition was to culminate with a prizegiving event on September 4 in Te Kuiti. Kina Campbell, Doc’s Maniapoto District Biodiversity Supervisor, says with New Zealand at Covid-19 Level 4, hunting is not permitted – so the competition cannot proceed. “We appreciate this news will disappoint a lot of people planning to enter, but Covid-19 has given us no choice,” she said. “Heading into the bush to hunt is not allowed when the Government’s very clear direction is for people to stay home and stay safe.” Any rescheduling of the competition will be announced once details are finalised.

NO PLANET B

FAITH IN WAIPĀ

Follow the guidelines

It’s what’s on the inside that counts

Here we are again. Whilst none of us are, I’m sure, entirely happy about it, can we at least agree that it is necessary? I mean, what’s the alternative? Just carry on as normal and let the cards fall where they may? Ultimately, I guess that might work out for the majority of the population. Unless of course you were one of the people who died as a result of catching the Delta variant of Covid 19. Or unless the health system collapsed under the strain, and you were part of the collateral damage - one of those who couldn’t get urgent medical treatment because of that collapse. I think it is fair to say that nobody really knows how serious the consequences of an unfettered outbreak might be, but I do think the government is right to do what they can to avoid it. Sure - it’s inconvenient for most and downright difficult for some, but it is the right thing to do. I drove into town today and was surprised by the amount of traffic on the road, and by the number of people who were out and about - not wearing masks. There were people walking maskless up and down Victoria Street. On the way home I realised I had forgotten to buy rubbish bags and so I went to the local dairy and was surprised again to find people walking in and out as if it were an ordinary day. I remember the last lock down and one wasn’t allowed into the dairy until the last person had come out. There have been a few stories in the news of certain individuals and groups disregarding the rules, no doubt because they resent the restrictions placed upon

In the midst of a government ordered ‘lockdown’, the subdued atmosphere walking around deserted lonely streets of our town is eerily unfamiliar. The absence of traffic and people, jarringly confronts you with everyone ‘hunkering’ down in their homes for the purpose of containing this menacing viral intrusion. How does it impact your life? For some it’s welcomed as time to chill and spend time with family or for a catch up on chores or hobbies - others end up ‘over it’, feeling isolated, frustrated with routines pulled out from under them and a sense of boredom. For a variety of reasons, many hit a wall and would be happy for their ‘bubble-time’ to burst anytime soon. Lockdowns reveal stuff to us about our headspace, our feelings and emotions and display a lot about how we handle pressure. The fact is we live from the inside out - not from the outside in. Let me explain. Being in a place of inner peace and contentment has less to do with favourable circumstances and more to do with the health of our personal inner world. Happiness cannot depend merely on ‘happenings’ being favourable… without ‘favourable’ happenings, just how resilient are we? A book by M.R.DeHaan, a medical doctor, describes how healthy physiology (physical health and wellbeing ) is determined greatly by our psychology or what resides in our inner world. He explains how much damage is done to our bodies having negativity, stress, anxiety, agitation, fear or anger to name a few toxic emotions. Also remorse, jealousy, bitterness, sadness, shame or unforgiveness are dreadfully damaging.

By Peter Matthews

them. It reminds me of the time when my eldest son had just learnt to drive and was on a restricted licence, such that he was not permitted to carry passengers. He came and asked me if it would be all right with me if he gave a friend of a lift “just down the road”. My reply was that it would, of course, be absolutely fine with me but before leaving he should give the police a call to see if it was OK with them. He was not pleased; in fact he was properly fed up - with me! But his anger, was mis-directed; I didn’t make the rules. Imagine the absurdity of the situation were he stopped by the police with his friend in the car: “Oh it’s all right - I asked my dad and he said it was fine”. Anyone who thinks they are getting one over on Jacinda Ardern by flouting the rules is missing the point. She didn’t cause the problem, nature did. What caused nature to do it is another discussion - which is surely worth having, but not today. Right now, following the guidelines is the most sensible thing to do. So, let’s just get on ONLY PLANET with it, as all reasonable people are doing, and with a bit of luck it won’t be for too long.

By Murray Smith, Senior Leader, Bridges Church

Does getting a healthy inner world make any difference in managing our outer circumstances? Years ago during Cuban dictator Fidel Castro’s rule, a Christian leader was arrested amidst severe persecution. This Christian leader was put in a coffinlike box and buried inches below ground level. A small chute conveyed basic rations to keep him barely alive. This was ‘social distancing’ to the extreme. The goal was to break this man, forcing him to retract his faith. He remained like this a long time, confounding his tormentors. Eventually they released him, in serious physical condition- filthy, emaciated, flesh infected from having lain in his own excrement. Marvelling that he was alive his captors later asked him why he did not crack. His response was, “In my soul bloomed a garden. And they could never take that away from me…” An incredible example of how the inner quality of peace is able to sustain a person in the severest circumstance. You can imprison a person but you cannot imprison their soul. Experiencing inner peace and freedom like that Christian leader, goes beyond just developing a disciplined mind or internal fortitude… it’s sourced out of a relationship and gift that is offered. A gift that can be freely received from Jesus Christ who said… “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled.”

OUT OF ZONE 2021

CAMBRIDGE NEWS | 11

THURSDAY AUGUST 26, 2021

Choosing a school The circumstances and situations of students and their parents or caregivers can change during the year. Schools receive enrolment applications at any time, and while enrolment applications from in-zone students are automatically accepted, out-ofzone applications received outside an advertised pre-enrolment period can’t be accepted unless there are out-of-zone places available and a new ballot is held. School enrolment zones are in place to stop schools from getting overcrowded – however they’re not in place at every school. They give children who live in a school zone a guarantee they can attend it. If you want to enrol you child at a school for which you are not in their zone however, here is the process. Each year, schools will advertise in your area advising how many out-of-zone places are likely to be available, the closing date for applications for these places and any ballot dates for out-ofzone places. You can also contact a school at any time to ask about zoning – and you can be sent an enrolment pack which will have important dates.

When it comes to the application process, acceptance is ranked in order of priority – and first priority must be given to any applicant who is accepted for enrolment in a special programme run by the school. Other factors – among others - which are considered include applicants being siblings of either a current or former student of the school. Out-of-zone ballots take place at schools each September – though some primary schools with enrolment zones will hold more than one ballot a year. When a ballot is held, available places are filled and a waiting list is then created for unsuccessful applicants. Successful applicants have 14 days to confirm if they accept or reject the offer of a place, and if they don’t respond the place will be offered to the first person on the waiting list. To check if a school has an enrolment scheme and whether you live in it, either phone the school – or visit the Education Counts website www.educationcounts.govt.nz

THURSDAY AUGUST 26, 2021

Joining a school outside of its zone If you wish to send your child to a zoned school but you live outside of that zone you can still apply for the school as an applicant. The school only offers out-of-zone applications if it has extra places.

Each year, schools will advertise for any out-of-zone places available, this is generally between July to October annually with strict closing dates for applications/ballots for out of zone places. Some schools will also have Information nights around the same period where they make a presentation on the school, give you the opportunity to meet staff and ask questions. However, you can contact a school at any time to ask about zoning and have them send you an enrolment pack that will have important dates. Applicants are accepted in this order: •

First priority must be given to any applicant who is accepted

for enrolment in a special programme run by the school

Second priority must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the school

Third priority must be given to any student who is the sibling of a former student of the school

Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school

Fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school

Sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.

If the school board receives fewer applications than there are places available all applicants will be enrolled. If there are more applicants than

places the school must hold a ballot (draw) to fill the places available, and create a waiting list for applicants who are not successful in the ballot. Within three school days of the ballot happening, the school must post letters informing applicants of the outcome of the ballot.

Successful applicants then have 14 days to confirm they accept or reject the offer of a place. If they don't respond within that period, the place will be offered to the first person on the waiting list established by the ballot. The Secretary of Education's instructions to schools are that siblings at the same year level

School zoning:

what you need to know? should be kept together for the purpose of the ballot, so that if one sibling's name is drawn, the other is automatically successful also. Some primary schools with enrolment zones will hold more than one ballot each year. This is for five-year-olds who are starting school.

When it comes to picking the right school for your children you may have to factor where you live to determine where your child can attend school.

What does zoning mean? In a nutshell, zoning means children who live in the school's area (the zone) are guaranteed a place at their local school.

School enrolment zones are used by schools to stop them from getting overcrowded and give children who live in the school area (the zone) a guarantee that they can go to their local school.

If the school has zoning, you need to give an address within this zone when you apply to enrol your child. This must be your usual place of residence. If the school finds that you have given false information,

Out Of Zone Enrolments 2022 Enrolment at Leamington School is governed by an enrolment scheme due to the continual demand from across Cambridge. Therefore the BOT has determined, that in 2022, there will only be out of zone places for: • 5 students in Year 5/6 for 2022 • 5 students in Year 3/4 for 2022 • 3 students in Year 2 for 2022 • 7 students in Year 1 for 2022 (dependent on enrolments before the close off date for in-zone children) Families are encouraged to enrol their children as soon as possible. The out of zone ballot will close on 17th September, be drawn on 20th September and notifications made on 22nd September. Details of the school zone can be found on the school website or from the school office. OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS FOR 2021/2022 Due to ongoing roll growth at Kaipaki School, enrolment continues to be governed by an enrolment scheme. In 2021/2022 there will be two enrolment periods, with the first enrolment period from 18th October 2021 to 14th April 2022. The board has determined that up to 12 places for Year 0/1 students are likely to be available for out-of-zone students in the first enrolment period. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. For students seeking enrolment within the first enrolment period, the deadline for receipt of applications for out-of-zone places is Tuesday 28th September 2021. If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot is required, it will be held on Wednesday 29th September 2021. Check out the walks

Cambridge’s Most Popular Community Sports Event

By Sue Milner, Chair, Cambridge Community Board

This year it seems that Covid is having another go at community disruption, but thankfully many of us are doing our best to keep our communities ticking along albeit with a few limitations. Perhaps those hardest hit may be those who do not have family support, or any support around them, we all need to be watching out for them. A friendly greeting as we pass them on our daily walk may make a difference. It is frustrating to see events that we were looking forward to postponed or cancelled, the Waipā Youth Awards presentation night has been cancelled for the second year running. It is always great to see outstanding young members of our community acknowledged, so hopefully there may be an opportunity for this to happen later in the year. While we cannot travel as much as many of us would like to, please consider some of the nearby walks around Cambridge. Last Cooney Law year many of us enjoyed them and already proudly supports a good number are out there walking and cycling.Daffodil Day This will also mean that by enjoying all these walks, when lockdown ends and visitors22 come back toStreet our beautiful town we Dick will be able to be great hosts and recommend plenty of Cambridge out and about in Cambridge activities. a number of businesses in our town that are not able to open at this time. If you are able to perhaps go online and maybe make a purchase from their websites, please do. We will want all these businesses in our town when lockdown is over, so anything we can do now for them will make a difference. Courier deliveries are still happening. Why is New Zealand’s price level high?

Swim award for St Peters

The Swim School at St Peter's, Cambridge has won the 2021 award for New Zealand's Most Outstanding Swim School. Under new Director of Aquatics Ben Feinberg-Danieli the Swim School has gone through an evolution over 18 months from its state-of-the-art base at St Peter's, Cambridge. Head Teacher Rachel Challis said, "teaching kids how to swim is what we love, do best and enjoy the most”. “We are passionate about teaching our students the skill of swimming and have developed a top-level educational programme with comprehensive training systems.” The progress was emphasised last week at the aborted 2021 New Zealand Short Course Swimming in Auckland last week. The event was cancelled after one session but in that time Savanna Bourke (pictured right) won gold in the Women's 16 years old 100 Individual Medley.

As the curtain fell again last Tuesday, I was hosting a meeting with outside visitors in my retirement village. This – coupled with the fire alarm system deciding to interrupt proceedings - caused us to retire to my home to conclude the meeting and then swiftly send the visitors on their way. The good news is that the alarm was having a little blast-off entirely unrelated to any possible incident, but one had to wonder if ‘Her up there’ on the ninth floor of the Beehive knew we were having a meeting. So, another deep dive into the joys of Level 4. As we all know now this was initially, for Cambridge, to be a three-day affair but further matters took us out to seven days. As a result of this Tuesday’s pronouncement there may be light at the end of the non-Auckland tunnel but only the good Lord knows the result. The level chosen (or should I say dictated) means nothing other than to ensure that there is an awareness of a need for care, distancing, low-level mixing with others and swerving around each other should we meet on a footpath. Who ever thought that simple bubbles would assume such importance? What really interests me – in fact intrigues and pleases also – is the fact that, like me, the majority are extremely careful with using their phone-driven Covid recognition app-thingy to record their arrival into establishments that display the strange hieroglyphic at their entrance. And I must be restrained by my wife, in our favourite café, when I notice people clearly not doing so. She knows my tendency to raise my voice sometimes in order that a message ‘gets through’. So it was with much pleasure that, four days after the Beehive-driven portcullis fell again, that I received a message on my phone from them ‘up there’. It told me – with measured though polite tones – that I ‘appear’ not to have activated (as in used) my app-thingy for a week. Which is absolutely true as I had not left our village for two days prior to the lockdown pronouncement and my only post-lockdown outside venture to the supermarket caused the ‘thingy’ to fail. Driven, I suspect, by the light reflecting on the glass to which it is internally appended (do you know you can get over this by ‘shooting’ the thing from behind??

Also, as occurred in this case, my wife’s photo of the thingy accommodated me as well which is also good to know. Also did you know that you can record ‘at home only’ days on the app too? But the clear message here is that there is measurement going on. And more importantly there is a follow-through procedure when your normal visitation recording pattern changes. Which is very comforting. So, what is stopping these idiots – without any care for their fellow man or woman - who feel it is beneath themselves to use the app? Are these the same idiots who (medical conditions aside) are declining to visit the Covid jab centre? They are placing their fellow citizens (and their families) at increased risk. Should they be declined entry into public places as a result of their lackadaisical and plainly uncaring attitude? I let you be the judge of that. But as this is not (yet) a police state they go free. However, there are countries elsewhere that are putting in place a ‘no jab-no entry’ dictum. My sympathy goes to the owners of retail premises who depend on their customer base to remain financially alive. They do not want to jeopardise that gain by apprehending non-conforming customers either because they do not use the app nor sign in. But be aware people - that precious little bit of flimsy paper proving you have had two jabs may assume a more important role in the future. Here in my village one of our caring neighbours is using his plastic laminating equipment for us all to make the small document more robust. This may well become more useful and useable than we initially thought instead of residing within our (now dusty) passports!

Ten teams from intermediate schools around the Waikato took part at the cross country meet, hosted by Tokoroa Intermediate School at the Tokoroa Memorial Sports Ground. “To place is a significant achievement and the schools should feel very satisfied with their efforts,” said Tokoroa Intermediate

If the number of insertions chosen is not met then a bulk charge will be applied at the end/cancellation of your schedule based on correct rate reflective of the number of ads published e.g. if you have chosen the 12 insertion rate and only publish 6 insertions, the bulk charge will be the difference in price between the 6 insertion rate and 12 insertion rate multiplied by the number of ads published. You pay the rate reflective of the number of ads you actually publish. Invoicing and Payments: For advertisers on a regular schedule invoices will be sent at the end of the month and payment is due by the 20th of the following month, otherwise payment is required by end of day Tuesday in advance of publishing. Accounts in arrears +60 days may be subject to a $95 + GST late payment fee per month. Advertiser is responsible for all debt collection fees. Cancellation deadline is one week prior to publication. By confirming and placing advertising in Good Local Media Ltd publications you are agreeing to our terms and conditions of trade. Limitation of Liability: Good Local Media Limited (including its employees, contractors, officers, or agents) shall not be liable for a failure or breach arising from anything beyond their reasonable control e.g. an act of God, fire, earthquake, strike, explosion, or electrical supply failure, unavoidable accident or machine breakdown; and shall not be liable in tort, contract, or otherwise for loss of any kind (whether indirect loss, loss of profits, or consequential loss) to the Advertiser or any other person.
