Green light ahead By Mary Anne Gill

A 47ha Cambridge subdivision with 212 new houses, is expected to get the green light later this week from Waipā District Council. Work on the 3Ms’ development on Cambridge Road stopped in July when independent hearing commissioners refused a resource consent application. A hearing at the Environment Court appeared likely after developers lodged an appeal and meanwhile the abandoned bare land turned into a giant dust bowl, angering some nearby residents. Behind the scenes, though, council staff and the developers were working to avoid a court battle.

And the developers appear to have done it by purchasing properties, moving a roundabout, changing the layout of a roading network and making provision for a destination playground. The development includes a primary school, retirement village, destination playground and commercial centre Wayne Allan, group manager District Growth and Regulatory Services said the council was “absolutely” comfortable with the application now and staff have recommended it proceed on a non-notified basis. “It’s more in line with the structure plan requirements. It will activate the C2 growth cell not only for the 3Ms’ development but

also for the Ministry of Education in terms of their primary school. “Not only are we getting the primary school built in record time since designation, but we are getting urban development from 3Ms’ proposal, we are getting another proposal for a retirement village as part of the super lot and we’ve got a destination playground that’s going to be constructed that’s connected with our other reserves and walkway areas along the stormwater swale system,” he said. Allan said it was clear after commissioners rejected the earlier plan as a non-complying activity under the council’s district plan that submitters wanted council and 3Ms to work closely together to reach agreement.

Maija backs the vax call

Maija Vance finds it impossible to understand why people are refusing to get a Covid vaccination. The former jockey, who suffered life-changing injuries in a race fall in September 2018, got her second vaccination on Super Saturday at Unichem Family Health Pharmacy in Cambridge Road. “It blows my mind there are people who don’t want the vaccine. It makes me so mad.” She only has one friend who doesn’t want the vaccination “and I don’t think she’s going to be my friend much longer.” Vance, who was born in Sweden but grew up in New Zealand, is the daughter of former jockeys turned trainers Bob and Jenny Vance. In September 2018 the 30-year-old suffered 13 rib fractures and broke her back in five places with the T8 vertebra crushing her spinal cord and leaving her with no feeling or movement from the waist down. She was told she would never walk again but is back riding horses and rides trackwork in Cambridge. See: Super Saturday and Covid updates, pages 8 and 9.

Some submitters then agreed to sell their properties which allowed for a new collector road and stormwater swale in the revised subdivision application, something the commissioners said were key requirements for the development. The revised proposal has moved the roundabout from outside the Te Awa Retirement Village west towards St Peter’s School, preserving several century-old trees. It would also link better with the council’s C3 growth cell, said Allan. Now, like any other subdivision in a residential environment, council could make a final decision under its delegated authority. Developer Matt Smith told The News if the council granted consent, 3Ms would withdraw the Environment Court appeal. “3Ms can get on with supplying much needed sections to the market,” he said. While the future looks bright for the subdivision, the council has in the meanwhile received complaints about the impacts of the large dust bowl. Te Awa general manager Mandy Hudson said many of her residents had respiratory conditions which were aggravated when recent spring winds whipped the dust through the air. She advised residents to stay inside on Sunday and complained to the council. “It’s not acceptable. You can’t put your washing out, you can’t open your windows,” she said. Allan said the developers had been told to mitigate the impacts and were using water tankers on the site to settle the dust down. Smith acknowledged the dust complaints. “We are working actively to manage dust effects arising from earthworks, including watering. “We have great relationships with our neighbours and want to see that continue throughout the development. We will be working hard to ensure that is the case,” he said.

The Wizard and the banknotes, I saw last week that the Wizard, Ian Brackenbury Channell, had had his contract with Christchurch City terminated after 23 years. The news brought back memories of an exchange I had with the Wizard in 1992 when I was Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. The RBNZ was proposing to take the Queen off four of our five banknotes and replace her with prominent New Zealanders. We received a letter from the Wizard saying that unless we withdrew this ‘heinous and treasonous proposal’ he would ‘pronounce anathemas upon the RBNZ and his troops would lay siege to our buildings’. I wrote back to him saying we understood his viewpoint, but we intended to proceed with the proposal. I added that over the previous few years, the RBNZ had been cursed by most New Zealanders because of our interest rate policy so one more curse probably wouldn’t matter. Next week, about a dozen people in old British Army uniforms appeared on the steps of the RBNZ Head Office in Wellington with placards saying ‘Save the Queen” – and, of course, they had television cameras there to film what they were doing. After a while, I asked one of the RBNZ staff to go out and ask them if keeping the Queen in the watermark on every New Zealand banknote would be an acceptable solution to them. We were always intending to do this, but we had not publicly disclosed it. They were delighted and called off their demonstration and danced down the street singing ‘we saved the Queen’. Short story quest starts

Organisers of the 2022 Cambridge Autumn Festival Short Story Competition hope this year’s theme of ‘Carpe Diem’, or ‘seize the day’, will inspire writers to enter. The nationwide competition is now open. Cambridge Autumn Festival chairperson Alana MacKay said it was interesting to see where writers took each year’s theme. “We’ve had stories from all genres – mystery, drama, horror, comedy, and more. Last year was a lockdown theme, this year it’s something totally different. The stories are as unique as the writers themselves, and we’re looking forward to seeing more great entries.” The competition is sponsored by Cooney Insurance in association with the Maurice Trapp Group. Cooney Insurance director David Cooney said this was the company’s 10th year as sponsor. “We are delighted to be involved again. What we love is that writers all around New Zealand can have a go, no matter their age or writing experience.” The competition is free to enter. Prizes are $1000 for the

winner, $500 for the second place-getter, and $250 for the third place-getter. Writers can interpret the theme in whatever way they want, but their entry must be a work of fiction that is original and has not been either published before or entered into another competition. Stories must be no more than 1500 words but can be fewer if preferred. Last year’s competition attracted several short entries, with the shortest coming in at 171

words. Entrants can submit multiple stories – both online and printed entries are welcomed, and there is no age limit. Entries close on January 31 next year. The winners will be announced during the Cambridge Autumn Festival, which in 2022 will run from March 25 to April 3. Full competition details and the entry form are at the Cambridge Autumn Festival website (cambridgeautumnfestival. co.nz/short-story).

Lost – and found As some of you may have heard, last week we were able to return a stolen training AED and CPR dummy to its owner. That is the best sort of outcome. The Cambridge owner’s Australian relatives saw a Waikato Police Facebook post seeking information and let him know. It just goes to show the extensive reach of social media. The owner was very happy to have it back. Identification was possible because of specific marks put on the dummy. It is important to keep a record of any serial numbers or distinguishing features of the property you own. Even photos or notes made of scratches or other marks may help to prove an item is yours. I look forward to bringing you more good news in coming weeks. On a related topic, I regularly see posts on Facebook where people have found bank

cards, car keys jewellery or phones. The finders usually ask for the owner to contact them and claim. It is great that there can be the chance of returning these items. The best approach in these situations however is to take the item to the bank of issue, or hand them into Police as soon as possible and allow us to deal with it. Where the owner has reported it lost or stolen and we will be able to quickly match the item to them. If you were to accidentally give it to the wrong person responding to a Facebook post, it could cause further loss or deception for the real owner. Equally you cannot just keep found items for yourselves if no one claims them as that falls under theft. Finally, following on from my Facebook Marketplace column last week, I have heard

of buyers initiating purchases and then arriving to collect the item with only a small amount of the total purchase price in hand. If the buyer is a stranger and you give them the goods, perhaps taking them on their word to pay the balance later, and they don’t, this becomes a civil matter, akin to a breach of contract. While it is in some people’s nature to see the best in people, unfortunately not all people are as honest as we’d hope. Remember, if the price was communicated and agreed beforehand, the purchaser knew that they were coming with insufficient cash from the outset, regardless of the excuse they may offer. Protect yourselves from loss and be savvy. Have a good week and stay safe.

Briefs… Interns join News Two Wintec journalism students - Benjamin Wilson and Ricky Lam - have joined the News team this week on an internship. Watch out for their work in coming weeks. Nyriad moves out Supercomputing startup Nyriad has moved from its Lakewood premises in Cambridge to Innovation Park in Hamilton and switched its global headquarters from New Zealand to the United States. Nyriad is launching the industry’s first storage solutions based on a new architecture that redefines how data is stored. At its height two years ago, the company employed 90 people from its Cambridge headquarters. Nyriad was founded in 2014 by Cambridge entrepreneur Matthew Simmons, who was chief executive until October last year. CCTV upgrade A new $30,000 closed circuit television camera will be installed in Leamington so police and neighbourhood support groups can monitor unsavoury after-hours activity. A new fixed licence number plate recognition camera will also go up at the northern entrance to Victoria (High-Level) Bridge costing $12,750. It is part of a district-wide $75,000 threeyear commitment to district security by Waipā District Council. Mayor off sick Waipā deputy mayor Liz Stolwyk has been covering for mayor Jim Mylchreest the past few days while he has been on sick leave. The News understands Mylchreest, who in August announced he would stand for mayor again next year, has a chest infection and laryngitis. Earlier this year he had a stroke but insisted it would not affect his ability to lead the council for a fourth term.

Well and truly successful

An award-winning food producer says Kaipaki, where she lives and runs Well & Truly Artisan Pantry, is the “best kept secret around”. Sue Loder has won the bountiful table category in the NZI Rural Women NZ Business Awards. She and husband Matt own Well and Truly Pantry and produce certified gluten-free gourmet granolas and pantry products using produce from local growers and suppliers. “We’re a bit different, we choose to put people before profits, from the high-quality ingredients we choose, to the flexibility we offer our team, to the partnerships with our wholesale customers. “We believe in building a community that feels supported in their pursuit for a balanced life, which is super important now more than ever,” said Sue. The entire range is handcrafted, from blending of the ingredients to cooking and packaging. Each part of the

process from the measuring of ingredients to the bag filling is all done by hand. Part of the balanced life for Sue and her family is living in their rural community. She says it’s funny that “most people we meet” don’t know where Kaipaki - between Te Awamutu and Cambridge - is. It’s been an amazing year for Sue and the team, winning seven silver medals at the outstanding food producers awards and reaching the finals of the NZ Artisan Awards and the New Zealand food awards where the winners will be announced later this month. “Winning the Rural Woman NZ bountiful table award is such an incredible honour, to be amongst such inspirational women past and present is such a privilege and truly the icing on the cake (or should I say yoghurt on the granola).” The supreme Rural Women NZ Business award will be announced later this year. Members of Altrusa International Cambridge presented a timely donation of food to Cambridge Community House (CCH) this week in acknowledgement of World Food

Day on October 16. The delivery of non-perishable food to the organisation was welcomed on Monday by CCH manager Harriet Dixon. She said the Community House was currently 65 local families each week with food.

Altrusa International Cambridge president Maureen Blackstock, left, and board member Teresa Gillies delivered bags of food to Cambridge Community House earlier this week.

“That’s a huge increase as lockdown level 3 further affects our community. We are seeing many families struggling to put food on their table and have local parents stating that they will go without to ensure their kids can eat. This is an awful position for families to be in. They don’t want to ask for help for fear of being judged and feeling shame – we take those feelings away by providing food and offering wrap-around support services to help them back on their feet,” she said. “There is no judgement at CCH – no shame in reaching out for support at this extremely difficult time.” World Food Day is marked on October 16 each year to commemorate the founding of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation in 1945. The date is also observed by organisations like the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. Support for World Food Day is a project undertaken by Altrusa

International Cambridge, said the club’s publicity officer, De-ane Busby. “Each year, Cambridge Altrusans collect tinned and dried food for donation to a selected organisation,” she said. “This year, we decided to give it to Cambridge Community House. We have helped them with funding before.” The local group belongs to an established network of clubs linked to Altrusa International in the United States. The service organisation was founded in 1917, with education and literacy as one of its main focuses. The Cambridge club raises funds each year for distribution among a range of community organisations and for many years, its members have assisted residents at the Selwyn St Andrew’s Retirement Village, lending a hand with shopping or other outings. De-ane said the club was seeking to boost its membership numbers. For more information contact De-ane Busby on gdbusby@xtra.co.nz, or president Maureen Blackstock at president.cambridge@altrusa.co.nz.

Age does not weary it... By Roy Pilott

It gets knocked down – but it gets up again. A controversial Cambridge sign warning people to be on the watch for “aged” people was in storage this week after being being put up in the wrong place. News columnist and retirement home resident Peter Carr recently expressed his less than complimentary views of the bright yellow sign showing a “bent-backed old person”. “Nobody in the Waipā council asked if the residents wished to be associated with being decrepit, doddering and unable to see approaching traffic. In fact, over the succeeding 10 (or half score) years the pathways have been littered with amazingly sprightly people…” he wrote. The sign, which had been in Victoria St, Cambridge, appeared in Le Quesnoy Place. Enter letter writer Brian Plimmer who mused last week that

there appeared to be no criteria “for erecting these signs which offend rather than protect”. He was also quick to tell the News this week that the sign had disappeared. Well, it has, and it hasn’t. Waipā District Council Transportation Manager Bryan Hudson noted the sign had been removed from somewhere in town and dumped on the Victoria Street berm where it was installed “in error”. On Monday the sign maintenance contractor was alerted to the error and was holding the sign until its proper home was found, he explained. “The ‘Aged’ sign is part of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s family, a council spokesperson said. We asked Waka Kotahi whether the signs showing a partially hunched person over the word “Aged” had had their day – particularly given the country has 600,000 people over 65 who might be tagged as

Christmas comes early

The controversial sign.

“aged”. Apparently not. “The symbol is intended to represent any adult pedestrian, and reflects the international symbol used for pedestrians,” a spokesperson said. But the addition of the “Aged” sign isn’t compulsory. “The Aged supplementary is optional for road controlling authorities…” the spokesperson added. Meanwhile, under intense questioning, columnist Carr – a JP for 48 years – confirmed he had nothing to do with the movement of the sign. Disclaimer: the author is under 65. Just. What do you think? Uncertainty over the impact of changing Covid levels has prompted Kids in Need Waikato to launch its Christmas gifting campaign slightly earlier than usual. The idea, says Kids in Need Waikato (KINW) founder Linda Roil, is to ensure that none of the children or carers they support are left out because of the pandemic’s effects. “We’re worried there may be more lockdowns, so want to start our annual Christmas campaign earlier this year,” she said. “We have a few wish trees up already, but they’re not

available until we’re at level two. However, we have a new Kids in Need Waikato online Christmas shop and people going to our Facebook page will find various options via which they can donate.” KINW supports children in foster care, from the age of infancy through to their late teens, and the carers who look after them. Linda has won numerous awards since she founded KINW in 2017. Her organisation provides care packs for youngsters who are being cared for by grandparents

or others who are not their own parents. Last year, with the help of community support, they sent out 1243 care packs. Linda said they are looking after around 150 families at this stage, and many of those are raising multiple children each. She said those seeking to help this year could either donate money, or toys – ideally ones that might encourage children to play outdoors. More details are available at the website, www.kidsinneed. co.nz, or on their Facebook page.

River ride delayed

Te Awa River Ride’s Waipā section is now scheduled to be completed early next year. Waipā District Council’s Group Manager, Service Delivery, Dawn Inglis said there were difficulties getting timber supplies for the lengths of boardwalk and retaining walls that feature in the Waipā section and as a result hopes for completion by the end of the year were dashed. Once completed, the Waipā section of Te Awa River Ride will take users through bush and across farmlands with scenic vistas across the Waikato River. “We recognise that this slight delay may be frustrating for our users but we’re working hard to deliver this amazing asset that everyone will be able to ride and experience for many years to come,” Inglis added. The Hamilton to Cambridge section is the final section of Te Awa River Ride - a 60km cycle path from Ngaruawahia to Lake Karāpiro.

The final section of Te Awa was a shovelready project which granted $8.2 million from the Infrastructure Industry Reference Group, supported by Crown Infrastructure Partners. The Hamilton to Cambridge section will be built by Waipā District, Waikato District and Hamilton City councils and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, as it crosses each territorial boundary.

TALKING ECONOMICS

Banks are too complacent This month, I return to my pet subject, interest rates and inflation – I was after all, a Central Banker for nearly 40 years. The issue is topical again because on October 6 the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) increased their Official Cash Rate (OCR) for the first time in seven years. The increase was a very cautious one of 0.25% and took the OCR to the still incredibly low level of 0.5%. A number of banks immediately increased their mortgage and deposit interest rates. Without being explicit, the RBNZ indicated that this modest increase was likely to be followed by further increases. The market consensus seems to be that the OCR could reach around 2.5% in 18 months. While that is a big increase from today’s level, it is still historically a very low level. The next bit of information the RBNZ and the financial markets have been waiting for was the CPI increase for the September quarter. It came out on Monday. My prediction was an increase of over 2% - I told the editor that on Saturday. It doesn’t cause me joy to say I was right. The CPI increase in the September quarter was 2.2%. Excluding quarters where the CPI figure was pushed up by increases in GST rates, this was the highest quarterly CPI number New Zealand has seen since the June quarter 1987. Price increases were widespread with prices for 10 of the 11 groups the Statistics Agency divides the data into rising. CPI inflation for the year to September was 4.9%. Inflation in NZ is now running well above the RBNZ’s medium-term target of 2%. The same thing is happening elsewhere. For example, current CPI inflation in the USA is over 5% and they too have a target of

THE AGE OF REASON

By Peter Nicholl

around 2%. The RBNZ has at least taken a first small step to take their foot off the monetary accelerator. The US Federal Reserve has said they might start doing that next month. Why are so many Western Central Banks acting in such a relaxed manner to the recent surge in inflation? It is because they believe the upward pressure has come mainly from disruptions linked to the Covid outbreak and should therefore be temporary. They expect (hope!) inflation will fall back to their target ranges once things return to normal. I think the Central Banks are being too complacent and there is a risk that inflation could become entrenched unless they act more quickly to reign in the current surge in prices. I fear that there could be another reason why the Central Banks are being unusually reluctant to raise interest rates to ward off inflationary pressures. They have dug themselves into a hole where their twin mandates of price stability and financial stability could soon be in conflict. They will be under pressure to raise interest rates more quickly and further to contain inflation. But by doing so, they will generate nonperforming loans and the start of the next financial crisis. This dilemma Central Banks face runs the risk of generating stagflation. That would be the worst of all outcomes. Stagflation is when a country is facing price increases and low or no growth simultaneously. I will tell you what I think about that issue in my next column.

Caught in the act Visiting Timaru two weeks ago on a business journey reminded me of an incident which happened 56 years ago. I was serving as Second Officer on a ship capable of lifting large tonnages of New Zealand produce and, in addition, carrying 90 first class passengers between London and New Zealand. It was a pleasant, though hard-working life which involved six weeks on the New Zealand coast, firstly discharging domestic and industrial goods - then returning to London with cheese, butter, meat, wool and, in the right seasons, fruit. Timaru was one of several secondlevel towns and cities we visited in both main islands. It was a standing fact (and sometimes a joke) on British ships that more UK-based ships officer married nurses from Timaru hospital than any other hospital in the country. So back to the incident. We had been in Timaru almost a week loading mainly Canterbury lamb. By the time we had closed the hatches and prepared the ship for sea it was late. The engineers warmed up the machinery ready for an 11pm departure. At that time, I was in discussion with the Master (Captain) as to the route he wished me to navigate to the next port. The harbour pilot - in the shape of the Timaru Harbour Board’s excellent Harbourmaster, strolled in to greet us, announcing, as he did, that he was going to guide us out of the Harbour. A very normal practice. The Master was a very strict disciplinarian and expected his officers to follow in his wake and his mould. He was a good teacher and expected a very high standard of behaviour and decorum. But, upon viewing

the Harbourmaster he took a second look and exploded. “Good God Pilot, what do you think you are doing?” What was causing the Master to raise his voice in great surprise was the Harbourmaster’s visual appearance. He had come straight to the ship from the local repertory theatre, and his face was still displaying the full make-up of whatever strange role he was playing to the good people of Timaru. There he was, in full uniform with gold-peaked cap on his head, and still displaying the facial visage that the audience was expecting to see for the gory role he had been playing. History does not record his response to the Master, but we did get out of the port safely and deposited our acting hero at sea, over the side and down the ladder to the waiting pilot boat. Looking back at Timaru just two weeks ago, while there are some changes connected with the port and allied industry – and population growth– nothing much has changed. I imagine the town now stretches north and south to about double that of 56 years ago. And looking back at Timaru just two weeks ago, while there are some changes connected with the port and allied industry – and population growth residential enhancement – nothing much has changed. I imagine the town now stretches north and south to about double that of 56 years ago. But without doubt it will always be home to many people for whom big-city urban sprawl and restrictive traffic movement are anathema. And lucky for them too.

FAITH IN WAIPĀ

A matter of trust Trust me! It’s a phrase that is peeled off so glibly. Yet who can you trust? These days whenever any voice is raised claiming to be trustworthy, public wariness and scepticism rises up. Over nearly everything. The reason that people are becoming increasingly likely to be suspicious and mistrusting, put bluntly, is because pervasive dishonesty abounds. Selective presenting of information and withholding of truth has become an art form used to control, shape or influence a viewpoint, achieve sales, or manipulate pretty much any objective - so people should be cautious. Trust levels with various politicians, medical ‘experts’, leaders, influencers, news and media outlets just now are pretty much at bedrock whereas it was often car salesmen, tradies, or those weird neighbours who were once eyed suspiciously! Unfortunately, I’d have to add some churches to the list where trustworthiness has diminished too. Just how much substance or stock we might put on the ‘trust me’ invitation when it comes beckoning will depend on who’s making the proclamation of being trustworthy. An examination of available evidence will quickly establish a track record of where there’s solid reliability… or otherwise. The track record of recent government edicts and reversals have done little to inspire or engender confidence throughout our nation. Trust is such a precious thing. Once trust is breached - a promise broken, an assurance revoked and proven worthless, it leaves cynicism, disappointment and suffering. The feeling of being duped is not readily healed. That’s why being consistently

NO PLANET B

By Murray Smith, Senior Leader, Bridges Church

trustworthy really matters. Whenever people discover that their trust in something or in someone’s assurances has been misplaced, it is devastatingly destructive. For a person discovering that what they trusted as reliable was invalid or worthless, often ‘burns’ them or inoculates them from ever readily trusting again. In our culture that dynamic is seen far too often in relationship breakdowns where unfaithfulness occurs. Such a breach can result in rendering a person’s ‘trust radar’ ultra-sensitive to the point of them wondering if they will ever be able to trust again. Trust is only ever earned and can never be demanded. Trust can only be given freely. Hard to establish and earn over time, it’s too easy to dash to pieces in moments. Human fallibility makes us all prone to let others down and even inadvertently damage trust. We over promise and under-deliver. Did you know that there is an invitation extended to us to trust that will never under-deliver or leave us disappointed or disillusioned? It’s captured in the words of someone who is fully human - yet fully divine and not subject to human fallibility. I’m referring to Jesus - whose promises never fail. They transcend time, culture and are totally trustworthy. Here’s just seven of many things Jesus promises to every person who places their trust in Him: I will be your help and strength. I will never leave you. I have plans for you beyond this life. I hear your prayers. I will fight for you. I will give you peace. I will always love you.

Fact mimics fiction I was on the phone with a client this week and surprise, surprise, the subject of Covid came up. We were talking about how there is no normal anymore. I observed that, if you’re in business, all you can do is sit down, have a good long think about things, decide how you’re going to proceed, and get on with it. He said, “I’m sure we can do it Peter”. I’m not so sure. Who would have thought, just a couple of years ago that we would all be wearing masks and social distancing, cafes would be closed, and we’d be queueing up to get into the supermarket? It’s a bit sci-fi and it’s happened very quickly. But hasn’t it always been coming to this? I have childhood memories of posters of cities in domes on stalks in the middle of red deserts. Vast wastelands where nobody lives, and nothing grows. TV shows regularly featured space travellers leaving a defunct planet Earth and heading off to colonise new worlds. I wonder whether there was any point at which the inhabitants of these fictional versions of our planet stopped to consider what was going wrong. Sometimes it just seems inevitable that we’re heading that way. There are, of course, a great many people who care enough to do something, but there are just as many who do not. Then there are those who simply do not have the luxury of “considering the environment” occupied as they are with the business of survival. Amongst those who care (or who realise that many of their voters do) are those movers and shakers who are about to attend COP26. I’m pleased to say that Scott Morrison has now expressed his intention to attend. He must have read my column of a couple of weeks ago. He might be in for a bit of stick

By Peter Matthews

when he gets there though; Australia’s environmental record to date is far from great. Biden is going, but Bolsonaro is not. The Queen is going, but President Xi Jinping is not. Putin won’t say whether he’s going, and a few others are being equally coy about their plans. Whatever happens there will be some splendid speeches and many grand, wide-ranging promises made. A similar thing happened in Paris in 2015 but many of the commitments made there turned out to be so much hot air. Taking into account the principles of cause and effect, along with the economic considerations, corporate momentum, political expediency, and innumerable other factors, it is probably fair to say that the survival or otherwise of the environment as we know it will be a close-run thing. Rather like the student who leaves his homework to the last minute, so the human race is beginning to comprehend the inevitable consequences of progress and development. Will the homework be handed in on time? It’s in the natureONLY of these thingsPLANET that we won’t know until the last minute, and we’re not quite there yet.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 21, 2021

As hundreds of people took advantage of Super Saturday to get their first or second jab, Mary Anne Gill, Viv Posselt and Wintec journalism student Ricky Lam, starting his internship at The News, called in to the Cambridge Community Marae and Cambridge Family Health Pharmacy. with notebooks and cameras. This week the importance of getting the vaccine was underlined as more cases emerged in Waipā.

Heeding the call

Waikato’s Covid outbreak is slowly growing with more cases detected in Te Awamutu and none in Cambridge. All the Waipā cases are linked to the current Waikato outbreak. There are no Waipā locations of interest listed on the Ministry of Health website. Waikato DHB says that indicates contact has largely been limited to between individuals and in private settings. This is supported by its testing data with cases almost exclusively linked to other known cases. Deputy mayor Liz Stolwyk and the DHB are encouraging the community to maintain high testing rates to provide confidence that any undetected cases of Covid-19 are picked up in the community. "We need to ensure anyone who needs it, gets tested. Even if you have just a runny nose, get tested. It is imperative we stamp out Covid-19 in our community."Maija Vance had her second dose of vaccination on Saturday – and said she would back stricter rules about having the jab. “I think they need to make it that we can’t go to the restaurant or go places unless you get vaccinated, and I think that will help to get people to vaccinate,” the Cambridge horsewoman said. Vance has been recovering from a serious spinal injury suffered in a race day fall in

Alicia Scott completed her vaccination at Super Saturday Vaxathon.

September 2018. The former jockey was in the news in April last year after climbing Mt Maunganui to raise money for the CatWalk Trust. Without some rules around vaccinations, she feared the country would not get to the 90 per cent target the Government has set. Those fears were underlined this week as Covid cases in Waipā underlined the importance of people keeping in their bubbles. On Tuesday the Ministry of Health reported six cases in Te Awamutu, one in Kawhia one in Kihikihi and two each in Cambridge and Whatawhata. Super Saturday arrived with Waipā the 16th most fully vaccinated district in the country with 84.35 per cent of eligible residents having had their first dose and 62.66 per cent their second. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern set a 100,000 national target for the first day of Vaxathon and Waipā residents responded.

Cambridge’s Keli Amiet and Shane Smith popped into Cambridge Marae early for their second vaccinations. They were delighted with their Super Saturday pack of goodies, handed out by Glenda Jerry.

In Cambridge they headed to the Unichem Family Health Pharmacy vaccination centre on Cambridge Road, Cambridge Community Marae and Cambridge Medical Centre for their Pfizer doses. Members of the Rowing NZ elite development squad and the Tokyo team were keen to help with Super Saturday, so they quickly rallied the troops. The team really added to the energy and put lots of smiles of people’s faces at Cambridge Community Marae as they gave out the goodie bags and Michael Brake and Beth Ross even brought their recently won Olympic gold and silver medals for people to see. Alicia Scott arrived at the pharmacy and completed her second dose. She said she was having the vaccine as protection for herself and her family from Covid infection. She fears Covid will remain in the community. “I feel like, probably, it has become a thing that we have to live with, and we will be

having Covid just like you get flu or a cold.” But with a vaccination, those infected would not suffer symptoms which would require being sent to hospital. “We’ve got to live with Covid, that is the unfortunate thing, but we can make it less deadly and lesser a health problem.” There were plenty of incentives to get vaccinated as centres put on entertainment and had coffee trucks operating. On the coffee truck at the pharmacy, Courtney Potter and Serrena Ryder believed the coffee wasn’t the game breaker. “There are a lot of people coming in, they are not coming for the free coffee, they have come just to get vaccinated and get on board with it.” Serrena said. “People are encouraged by the fact we will be normal, going back to level 2… that’s why they are doing it.” The Saturday push added just over 130,000 to the list of those who had received their first or second jab.

ON…

Name: Sarah Jane Matthews, 36 I was born in Huntly but moved to Ōhaupō when I was a baby and lived there until I moved out of home. I went to Waikato University for a year and then started work at a Te Awamutu accountancy firm where I did the rest of my degree via correspondence with the Open Polytechnic. I now live in Te Awamutu, where I have lived for most of my adult life. What role/s do you fill: In my day role I am executive manager Finance & Strategy at Ruapehu District Council. I also worked part time for Waipā Networks Trust as secretary/treasurer up until my newly elected trustee position. I am deputy chairperson of HRT Property Holdings Trust, deputy chairperson of YWCA in Hamilton, on the Te Awamutu College board of trustees, a board member of Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce and at home I am a mother of five. Tell us a bit about your family: My husband Justin and I have a blended family with five children: Emily, Codee, Boyd, Liam, and Maddie. They range in ages from 8-15. Never a dull moment! Do you have pets: Yes one dog, a schnoodle called Luna and two cats called Charlie and Zoey. Favourite movie: Me Before You. I read the whole series and I love Jojo Moyes’ work. Favourite singer or band: Dave Dobbyn or Six60, it’s a hard choice. Name one of your top 10 favourite New Zealanders: I have to say my Dad, he raised us as a solo father and was absolutely the best father anyone could ask

for. He would never say a bad word about anyone, he always put us first and he role modelled working hard. If you wanted famous though, I would always say Kate Sheppard because of what she did for the women’s suffrage movement. Favourite bird: I actually have a little fear of birds as there was a magpie who used to chase me as a child and I never got over it. If I had to choose though, I would say weka as we had this cool little weka trying to steal our lunch when we hiked Abel Tasman, I liked him because he was cheeky. Best moment ever: I have been very fortunate in my life that I have so many but the birth of my children and meeting my husband were the moments that changed my life the most. Favourite sport: Rugby. Best sporting moment ever: Stephen Donald kicking the winning goal in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. That always stands out to me because he wasn’t originally chosen to play but he turned up and showed everyone his value. Best place visited: I really love all of New Zealand but Glenorchy is pretty special to us, as it is where we got engaged and then married. Favourite holiday spot: Ahipara, Northland. It is where my husband is from and where his whānau live. I feel at peace there by the beach, I love hanging out with the whānau and the fishing up there is pretty epic. We always get plenty of seafood while we are there. Favourite food: My husband makes a pretty epic pulled pork in his smoker. What’s your signature dish: I asked my husband, he said my seafood chowder. Hobbies: Fishing, hiking, exploring and eating good food. Is wine tasting a hobby?

Sports chaplaincy: what it’s about By Murray Hunt

I was asked some years ago if I would consider becoming a Sports Chaplain. I liked the idea but put it off for some time due to other commitments in my Church. Once these commitments allowed me to do so, I took up the challenge to train with Sports Chaplaincy NZ (SCNZ) and became an accredited Sports Chaplain for the St Peters 1st XV Rugby team. More recently I also took on being Sports Chaplain to the Cambridge Rugby Referees Association. In 2020, I was invited to act as interim SCNZ Regional Leader for the Waikato and King Country in a voluntary and very part time manner. In February 2021, I left my job to take up the role more fully and grow sports chaplaincy in this region. My role has four main parts. I identify people who may have the right motivation and skills to provide pastoral care and wellbeing support to sports organisations. I work with our national staff to arrange for their training and accreditation. I network with sporting teams and clubs to find suitable placement opportunities, and I provide our Sports Chaplains with ongoing supervision and

support. SCNZ is a Christian faithbased charity that began in 2013 to address the growing need for pastoral care and wellbeing support within sport. Our vision is to provide mental and emotional, relational and spiritual support freely to athletes, staff, and their whanau, across the sporting spectrum, at all levels of sport, and in every region of the nation. Our Sports Chaplains are skilled volunteers who serve within a team, club, or school sports context, by invitation, donating from four to eight hours a week into their role during a season. They act as first responders, providing immediate pastoral care and wellbeing support, as well as referring people on to professional care as required. They offer mentoring and life skills development, bereavement and grief care, critical incident support, career transition guidance, suicide awareness and prevention, and stress management. They do so without prejudice or precondition, always respecting a person’s personal perspective. SCNZ has eight part or full time Regional Leaders who care for this growing team of sports chaplains and seek

to meet the ever-growing demand for such care within their region. As a charity we are reliant on the good will and financial backing of individuals, grant making trusts, businesses and philanthropists who understand this need and wish to partner with us. Each of the Regional Leaders seeks to fund their salary and expenses from within their own region, with national funds supporting and subsidizing each region as it gets established and grows. Recent events have shone a light on the desperate need for people like Sports Chaplains to be readily available to top level athletes who are struggling with sometimes acute pressures in life. What is less publicly know is the extent of this need at all levels of sport. Whether it is being a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to offload with, a Sports Chaplain is that independent person who is regularly present, and is able to provide holistic, confidential and skilful support to athletes and staff irrespective of their lifestyle or beliefs. Those who are interested in finding out more about sports chaplaincy or supporting this community service can do so by emailing murray. hunt@sportschaplaincy. co.nz or checking out the SCNZ website at www. sportschaplaincy.co.nz

Cookies plus

Nothing beats the aroma of freshly baked cookies. According to culinary historians, the first record of cookies was their use as test cakes. A small amount of cake batter was baked to test the oven temperature. There are also records showing cookies were a result of sugar cultivation in 7th century Persia. During the 11th to 16th centuries, sugar spread through the Mediterranean and then to northern Europe. By the 14th-century wafer-like cakes could be purchased in Paris. By definition, a cookie is a small sweet cake, either crisp or soft. And each country has its own word for ‘cookie’. They’re commonly called biscuits in New Zealand, England and Australia; cookies in the USA; and galletas in Spain. The name biscuit is derived from the Latin ‘panis biscoctus’ meaning twice baked. The name cookie was probably derived from the Dutch ‘koekje’ — little cakes. For best results with your home-baked cookies or biscuits, use level spoon and cup measurements. Ensure butter is at room temperature otherwise it won’t cream with the sugar. It should be pliable enough that your finger will leave a mark in it. Do not melt the butter as the dough consistency will change. COFFEE YO-YOS 1 teaspoon instant coffee powder 1 tablespoon boiling water
 175g butter, softened
 1/2 cup icing sugar, sifted
 1 1/2 cups plain flour
1/4 cup custard powder Coffee Filling: 1 tablespoon butter, softened
 1 teaspoon instant coffee powder
2 teaspoons hot water 1 cup icing sugar
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line an oven tray with baking paper. Dissolve the coffee in the boiling water. In a large bowl, cream the butter and icing sugar together until thick and

pale. Beat in the coffee. Sift in the flour and custard powder and mix well. Take generous teaspoons of the dough and roll into balls. Place on the prepared tray and flatten gently with a fork. Bake for about 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Cool on a wire rack. To make the coffee filling, combine the butter, instant coffee and hot water in a medium bowl. Sift in the icing sugar and mix to make a spreadable consistency. Sandwich two yo-yos together with the icing. Makes about 20. BERRY CRUMBLE SLICE Berry Mixture: 450g frozen mixed berries 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 cups water 1/2 cup cornflour Crumble: 250g butter, chopped and melted 1 1/2 cups brown sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 cups each: rolled oats, plain flour, wholemeal flour 1 teaspoon baking soda Bring the berries, sugar, lemon juice and 1 cup of water to the boil. Dissolve the cornflour in the remaining water. Carefully stir into the berry mixture. Simmer, stirring, until thick. Cool. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a 23cm x 30cm sponge roll

pan with baking paper. Beat together the melted butter, brown sugar and egg in a large bowl. Add the combined rolled oats, flours and baking soda and stir until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs — not too dry or wet. Pat half the crumble mixture evenly onto the pan. Spoon the fruit over the top then sprinkle with the remaining crumble. Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Makes about 20 slices. WHITE CHOCOLATE & MACADAMIA NUT COOKIES 175g butter, chopped 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 cups plain flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 75g each: white chocolate, macadamia nuts, coarsely chopped Preheat oven to 170°C. Line 1-2 baking trays with baking paper. Beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl, until pale and creamy. Add the egg and beat well. Sift in the combined flour and baking powder and then stir in the white chocolate and macadamias. Place tablespoons of the mixture onto lined baking trays. Lightly press down with the palm of your hand. Chill for 30 minutes if very soft. Bake for 15 minutes, until cooked. Makes 30.

Hamilton keeps the Peace

Hamilton has retained the Peace Cup – after organisers conceded the final between the holders and Piako had become unplayable thanks to Covid. The series for rugby sub unions in Waikato, Bay of Plenty and King Country went ahead without Cambridge and Te Awamutu this season – but North King Country did enter. “Waiting a couple of weeks for a hopedfor return wasn’t possible, so a unanimous decision was made to award Hamilton the Peace Cup as top qualifier,” Peace Cup chair Neil Macrae said. “Piako deservedly felt hard done by, finishing on equal points with Hamilton and still being under level two, ready and confident to play the Peace Cup Final. But with time effectively having run out, we had to make a call as to an end date.” Six regional representative teams were to kick off in late August before Covid 19 spread its wings, to delay the first round. This year was the first in a decade that the Peace Cup was put up as primary prize. The Stan Meads Shield – which has been introduced because the Peace Cup went missing - was revitalised as challenge trophy. When the series did start it brought together Hamilton, Piako, Central Bay of Plenty and North King Country. Hamilton looked on course for a clean sweep after wins over Piako and North King Country but were upset by Central Bay. The Bay of Plenty side – bottom of the table won the match 17-12 after the sides turned with the scores at 12 all – and also took the challenge trophy. “Their somewhat surprise win proved the worth of a challenge trophy in the revamped Peace Cup competition,” Macrae said. “It gives teams that are effectively out of finals contention the opportunity to win a trophy.”

The battered but cherished Peace Cup

Piako drew level with Hamilton on 11 points apiece when they posted a bonus point victory 43-26 over North King Country, confirming a replay of the 2020 final. Hamilton would have played host, having won the round robin encounter with Piako – but then the Level 3 lockdown was declared, and the final was eventually cancelled. Organisers say in spite of the untimely ending, the competition produced a number of highlights. North King Country showed great promise and there is confidence that with right support and preparation, the team will perform even better next season. “Looking forward, one area where we need to improve on is ensuring that teams have the right support structures behind them,” Macrae said. “We have seen examples in previous years of individuals driving teams as opposed to administrative groups. This will be part of our early discussions and we are scheduling a meeting in the new year that will better prepare us for the future.”

"

We were ecstatic with the result that Kevin got for us. We cannot recommend Kevin, Gary and the whole team enough as they were absolutely FANTASTIC. Kevin talked the talk, but he certainly walked the walk!! The team took the stress away from us, done exactly what they said they would, and over delivered on the day. Covid restrictions changed during our marketing plan, but the team re-arranged the necessary with no stress to us, and worked around the new norm!
