Closed circuit television cameras in Te Awamutu will be replaced with powerful cameras which police and neighbourhood support group CommSafe will use to monitor “unsavoury after-hours activity”. And in neighbouring Kihikihi two new CCTV cameras will go up as part of a $75,000 three-year commitment to district security by Waipā District Council. The programme is funded by the subsidised roading low costlow risk safety budget. The roll out will also include a new fixed licence number plate recognition camera at the northern entrance to Cambridge’s Victoria Street (high-level) bridge and a fixed or pan tilt zoom camera installed in Leamington. Future sites include two in Cambridge – at Norfolk Street to monitor traffic from Waikato Expressway - and in Cambridge Road at the site of the new 3Ms residential development and one on Great South Road in Ōhaupō. Te Awamutu Community Board chair Ange Holt welcomed the decision made by council’s Service Delivery committee this week. The community board, through its community discretionary fund, had contributed $5000 towards the project. Cambridge Chamber of Commerce chief executive Kelly Bouzaid was also heartened by the decision which would provide businesses and retailers with some comfort following several recent ram raids and burglaries in the town. Bouzaid and Holt have both been part of a CCTV advisory group which has been meeting behind the scenes to review camera performance, positioning and potential replacements to improve coverage, resolution and camera positions. A technical subgroup has also reviewed specific issues of video playback clarity and number plate readability.

The advisory group includes police, CommSafe, retailers, businesses, elected representatives and council staff. Transportation manager Bryan Hudson told the committee stakeholders wanted to improve the system to enable better crime prevention, investigation abilities and better system utility. The council took on the existing CCTV system to tap into Waka Kotahi funding and to use the cameras for traffic safety functions. “For example, it provides vigilance in detecting oversized vehicles trying to cross the high-level bridge and lights a message

board to detour large vehicles. It has also allowed prosecution of offenders,” said Hudson. The changes are: Te Awamutu • Mutu/Alexandra Roundabout. Remove existing fixed camera and replace with a new Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera which will monitor the roundabout during the day and check out activity during Commsafe/Police monitoring periods (generally evenings and weekends) $7500 • Arawata/Alexandra Roundabout. Remove

existing fixed camera and replace with a new PTZ camera - $7500 Cambridge • Victoria Bridge Cambridge – A new fixed Licence Number Plate Recognition camera on the over-road gantry with coverage of the pedestrian crossing on Victoria Street - $12,750 Kihikihi • SH3 Zebra Crossing - $12,000 • Lyon St, Whitmore St Intersection - $7500 Leamington • Commercial centre fixed or PTZ camera in Shakespeare Street - $30,000.

Tests in Waipā

Waikato’s Covid outbreak is slowly growing with more cases detected in Te Awamutu. All the Waipā cases are linked to the current Waikato outbreak. There are no Waipā locations of interest listed on the Ministry of Health website. Waikato DHB says that indicates contact has largely been limited to between individuals and in private settings. This is supported by its testing data with cases almost exclusively linked to other known cases. Deputy mayor Liz Stolwyk and the DHB are encouraging the community to maintain high testing rates to provide confidence that any undetected cases of Covid-19 are picked up in the community. “We need to ensure anyone who needs it, gets tested. Even if you have just a runny nose, get tested. It is imperative we stamp out Covid-19 in our community.” When the News visited the Te Awamutu testing station late yesterday morning there was a trickle of cars – but the Health Board had enough staff on deck to cater for a lot more. There may have been expectations of more cars – and the Events car park was set up for them – after eports of more cases of Covid being found in Te Awamutu. Pop-up testing is available at: Te Awamutu Event Centre carpark, Gorst Avenue, Te Awamutu,10am - 4.30pm Kihikihi Sports Domain, Gate 2, Speedway entrance, Kihikihi 10am – 2pm. Waipā continues to lead the way for vaccinations in Waikato with 87 per cent having their first jab and 68 per cent fully vaccinated.

Cycle way issue Hayden Woods (Letters, July 8) drew attention to the Te Awamutu – Pirongia Cycleway, predicting a cycleway cost blowout. I would agree. Take for example, the Cambridge Streets for the People Experiment, in my opinion, a failed experiment by Waipā District Council, unnecessarily costing ratepayers in another blowout. Mr Woods made pertinent points. He asked if landowners of the proposed cycleway route had considered the consequences before committing themselves. I am already aware of some landowners regretting their decision. In my opinion there have been questionable negotiation tactics and requirements placed on land owners. The consequence to those have committed themselves is that their safety is compromised, as is the wellbeing and security of their livestock. For every new road, new track and new route that opens, an opportunity is created for unwanted access, theft, trespassing and livestock rustling. These cost the farming industry $120 million a year in losses. Even the local constabulary has stated that rural crime is significantly on the rise. So, who in their right mind would in future buy a property bisected by public access, access that you would have no control over and is maintained… by whom? Joy McGregor Pirongia

Why the buy? Waipā District Council purchased 859 Maungatautari Road at Lake Karāpiro at auction on October 5, 2021, doubling its land ownership on the lake shore alongside Waipuke Park. Just where did Waipa District Council get the funds to purchase such land? And who gave the approval for such? I don’t recall any obvious surplus available for council to gamble at auction, I do recall however rates going up. So, was the rates increases to create ‘play money’? The land was purchased by council for a whopping - $5,320,000, compared with a government valuation of $3.42 million. I am for sure, disgusted in my opinion over this wasteful spending of funds on land we do not need, what we need is unrestricted, clean potable water supply, a working sewer system, unencumbered fully functional stormwater system, safe pot hole free roads and an affordable public transport service. Seems simple, but oh no - skate parks, cycleways, land purchases, and frivolous spending on unnecessary luxuries for a mere few - resulting ultimately in overwrought rates increases, appears to have become more of a priority than providing the essentials to struggling family households and the majority of the districts residents. When did, not caring about the people, override simple common sense? This land purchase does not provide or improve the delivery of ‘basic essential services’ to every Waipa household - where was elected council to protect the people? It was all conveniently done in secret under the cloud of Covid 19 – says a lot in my opinion. Hayden Woods, Te Awamutu

As some of you may have heard, last week we were able to return a stolen training AED and CPR dummy to its owner. That is the best sort of outcome. The Cambridge owner’s Australian relatives saw a Waikato Police Facebook post seeking information and let him know. It just goes to show the extensive reach of social media. The owner was very happy to have it back. Identification was possible because of specific marks put on the dummy. It is important to keep a record of any serial numbers or distinguishing features of the property you own. Even photos or notes made of scratches or other marks may help to prove an item is yours. I look forward to bringing you more good news in coming weeks. On a related topic, I regularly see posts on Facebook where people have found bank

cards, car keys jewellery or phones. The finders usually ask for the owner to contact them and claim. It is great that there can be the chance of returning these items. The best approach in these situations however is to take the item to the bank of issue, or hand them into Police as soon as possible and allow us to deal with it. Where the owner has reported it lost or stolen and we will be able to quickly match the item to them. If you were to accidentally give it to the wrong person responding to a Facebook post, it could cause further loss or deception for the real owner. Equally you cannot just keep found items for yourselves if no one claims them as that falls under theft. Finally, following on from my Facebook Marketplace column last week, I have heard

of buyers initiating purchases and then arriving to collect the item with only a small amount of the total purchase price in hand. If the buyer is a stranger and you give them the goods, perhaps taking them on their word to pay the balance later, and they don’t, this becomes a civil matter, akin to a breach of contract. While it is in some people’s nature to see the best in people, unfortunately not all people are as honest as we’d hope. Remember, if the price was communicated and agreed beforehand, the purchaser knew that they were coming with insufficient cash from the outset, regardless of the excuse they may offer. Protect yourselves from loss and be savvy. Have a good week and stay safe.

Briefs… Interns join News Two Wintec journalism students - Benjamin Wilson and Ricky Lam - have joined the News team this week on an internship. Watch out for their work in coming weeks. Mayor off sick Waipā deputy mayor Liz Stolwyk has been covering for mayor Jim Mylchreest the past few days while he has been on sick leave. The News understands Mylchreest, who in August announced he would stand for mayor again next year, has a chest infection and laryngitis. Earlier this year he had a stroke but insisted it would not affect his ability to lead the council for a fourth term. Skate dates Two planned events at the Rewi Street skate bowl, Centennial Park Te Awamutu, have been put back to November. In the finals Te Awamutu’s Matthew Van Der Wel, who is trained by Withers Electrical Ltd, is one of 10 finalists in the commercial-domestic division of the 20th Master Electricians Apprentice of the Year Challenge. The final is scheduled to be held in Wellington on November 18 and 19.

Covid impact is highlighted By Luke East

Church-leaders are concerned about the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on those who are already isolated and vulnerable. Te Awamutu’s churches are some of those most active in providing support to those in need, but their usual activities have been heavily impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. Jamie Budd of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church says that when the region moved to Level Two in September after three weeks of being unable to gather, the “joy and happiness on people’s faces” was clear to see. Now with Te Awamutu in Level 3 once more those in-need are again isolated and feeling “real emotional stress and pressure” as a

result. Julie Guest of St John’s Anglican Church says that “even at Level 2 providing food to those in need was challenging, we had been preparing to offer our usual Community Meals in bags but the move into Level 3 shut us down again”. She says being isolated is likely to be have a significant impact on the mental health of the most vulnerable. In normal times St Andrew’s runs a Friday night meal for “anyone needing support and company all over a nice hot meal that is fully provided for free.” St John’s Anglican Church runs a Monday evening Community Meal in conjunction with St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Te Awamutu

Twelve-year-old Te Awamutu Intermediate student, Lucas Sloan, has been praised by the community for his gardening prowess and business initiative. Last week Lucas enlisted the help of his mum, Racheal Simmonds, to make a Facebook post advertising the plants he had grown and is now

planning on selling. The post, made in the Te Awamutu Region Community Grapevine Facebook group, received an overwhelming amount of support from community members. “Awesome job! Keep up the great work and initiative” is just one of over a hundred similar comments made on the post. Lucas has been growing different

Rose talk Te Awamutu Community Board chair Ange Holt says a proposal to review the town’s identity, and its Rosetown moniker, is attracting good debate. Rook numbers fall The Regional Council believes ongoing pest control has reduced rook numbers in the Waikato to below 40. It is at this time of year the birds are most frequently seen congregating. Drones have been added to the artillery of weapons to find and control the intelligent big black birds, which were introduced in the 1860s – to control “pest” insects.

Bible Chapel puts on a Wednesday morning Community Cafe during term-time and many other Te Awamutu churches have similar outreach programmes. But during Level 3, despite historically being places of refuge for those in need, not one of these churches has been allowed to open its doors. As a result of the churches being unable to run their usual programmes under the current restrictions Kai4All organiser Tuhiao Williams Halling says demand is much greater and many produce growers and hospitality businesses have been dropping off their unused food resources to help Kai4All to feed those most in need. Those in need of urgent assistance can contact 0800 KAI4ALL.

varieties of tomatoes and flowers for the past eight weeks. Right now, he has over 150 tomato seedlings to sell. Lucas has even cut down bamboo shoots to sell as stakes alongside his tomato plants. Lucas began helping his Mum in garden three years ago; by planting seeds, cleaning pots, watering and fertilizing plants. When asked about his interest in gardening, Lucas said, “it’s relaxing and I get to do it with my Mum.” “Family and friends have tomatoes coming out of their ears, they don’t want anymore” Racheal said. Now, every six or so weeks, Lucas sets up a stall to sell the different produce he has helped to grow or make. He manages the stalls all by himself, including handling the money and even giving out gardening advice specific to the different plants he sells. Commentors of the Facebook post asked if they could pre-order plants but were told

no, because Lucas enjoys running the stall too much. Plants that are not sold are regularly donated to the Te Awamutu Sharing Shed. “He’s really professional in what he does, yeah, I’m proud of him” Racheal said Earlier this year Lucas put $200 from his stall earnings towards a school ski trip, paying for nearly half of the trip. When travel restrictions ease, his family plans on going to Australia for a holiday, Lucas says he’ll be saving the money he earns from the stall for that too. “He’s got a different mind to a lot of kids… He’s very good with the money he makes” Racheal said. Lucas is in his last year of intermediate and starts college next year. Although gardening takes up a lot of Lucas’ time, he says a big part of why he does it is to help his Mum out. In actual fact, Lucas is a self-proclaimed “dinosaur nerd” and wants to be a palaeontologist later in life.

Ōtorohanga District Council has decided to name its newest ward Rangiātea Māori Ward. The council voted to introduce a Māori ward earlier this year. Rangiātea is both a place in Hawaiki and point of final dispersal of the migration of Tainui Waka. It is a mountain of significance in Ngāti Maniapoto territory and where Tūrongo – who is on the Māori King’s line - and Mahinārangi lived. The council’s representation review attracted just six submissions and the initial proposal remained

unchanged. For the October 2022 elections Ōtorohanga district will comprise nine members elected from six wards, and the mayor elected at-large. The six wards reflect the following identified communities of interest: The six wards are Kāwhia/Tihiroa, Kio Kio/Korakonui, Ōtorohanga, Waipā, Wharepuhunga and Rangiātea. Kawhia and Ōtorohanga Community Bards will remain in place.

Name: Sarah Jane Matthews, 36 I was born in Huntly but moved to Ōhaupō when I was a baby and lived there until I moved out of home. I went to Waikato University for a year and then started work at a Te Awamutu accountancy firm where I did the rest of my degree via correspondence with the Open Polytechnic. I now live in Te Awamutu, where I have lived for most of my adult life. What role/s do you fill: In my day role I am executive manager Finance & Strategy at Ruapehu District Council. I also worked part time for Waipā Networks Trust as secretary/treasurer up until my newly elected trustee position. I am deputy chairperson of HRT Property Holdings Trust, deputy chairperson of YWCA in Hamilton, on the Te Awamutu College board of trustees, a board member of Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce and at home I am a mother of five. Tell us a bit about your family: My husband Justin and I have a blended family with five children: Emily, Codee, Boyd, Liam, and Maddie. They range in ages from 8-15. Never a dull moment! Do you have pets: Yes one dog, a schnoodle called Luna and two cats called Charlie and Zoey. Favourite movie: Me Before You. I read the whole series and I love Jojo Moyes’ work. Favourite singer or band: Dave Dobbyn or Six60, it’s a hard choice. Name one of your top 10 favourite New Zealanders: I have to say my Dad, he raised us as a solo father and was absolutely the best father anyone could ask for. He would never say a bad word about anyone, he always put us first and he role modelled working hard. If you wanted famous though, I would always

say Kate Sheppard because of what she did for the women’s suffrage movement. Favourite bird: I actually have a little fear of birds as there was a magpie who used to chase me as a child and I never got over it. If I had to choose though, I would say weka as we had this cool little weka trying to steal our lunch when we hiked Abel Tasman, I liked him because he was cheeky. Best moment ever: I have been very fortunate in my life that I have so many but the birth of my children and meeting my husband were the moments that changed my life the most. Favourite sport: Rugby. Best sporting moment ever: Stephen Donald kicking the winning goal in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. That always stands out to me because he wasn’t originally chosen to play but he turned up and showed everyone his value. Best place visited: I really love all of New Zealand but Glenorchy is pretty special to us, as it is where we got engaged and then married. Favourite holiday spot: Ahipara, Northland. It is where my husband is from and where his whānau live. I feel at peace there by the beach, I love hanging out with the whānau and the fishing up there is pretty epic. We always get plenty of seafood while we are there. Favourite food: My husband makes a pretty epic pulled pork in his smoker. What’s your signature dish: I asked my husband, he said my seafood chowder. Hobbies: Fishing, hiking, exploring and eating good food. Is wine tasting a hobby?

Organisers of the 2022 Cambridge Autumn Festival Short Story Competition hope this year’s theme of ‘Carpe Diem’, or ‘seize the day’, will inspire writers to enter. The nationwide competition is now open. Cambridge Autumn Festival chairperson Alana MacKay said it was interesting to see where writers took each year’s theme. “We’ve had stories from all genres – mystery, drama, horror, comedy, and more. Last year was a lockdown theme, this year it’s something totally different. The stories are as unique as the writers themselves, and we’re looking forward to seeing more great entries.” The competition is sponsored by Cooney Insurance in association with the Maurice Trapp Group. Cooney Insurance director David Cooney said this was the company’s 10th year as sponsor. “We are delighted to be involved again. What we love is that writers all around New Zealand can have a go, no matter their age or writing experience.” The competition is free to enter. Prizes are $1000 for the

winner, $500 for the second place-getter, and $250 for the third place-getter. Writers can interpret the theme in whatever way they want, but their entry must be a work of fiction that is original and has not been either published before or entered into another competition. Stories must be no more than 1500 words but can be fewer if preferred. Last year’s competition attracted several short entries, with the shortest coming in at 171

words. Entrants can submit multiple stories – both online and printed entries are welcomed, and there is no age limit. Entries close on January 31 next year. The winners will be announced during the Cambridge Autumn Festival, which in 2022 will run from March 25 to April 3. Full competition details and the entry form are at the Cambridge Autumn Festival website (cambridgeautumnfestival. co.nz/short-story).

In the Repair Shop today…

A rugby mystery: Who can solve it?

Some unusual items arrive at the Te Awamutu Menzshed for repair. Few would be more interesting – or more a challenge - than an Antique Auguste Reidemeister French Tricycle horse, made in France in the late 1800s. The horse was carved from wood and had glass eyes and a leather saddle supporting iron stirrups. The pedal horse was completed with an iron frame, handles and wheels, As an avid watcher of The Repair Shop on TV One, Hazel Barnes wondered where she could get it restored. The horse had been in her family since her Welsh father bought it at a toy “nick knack” sale when they were children. Hazel said that her father was always coming home with all sorts of unusual things. If he hadn’t been a farmer, she thinks he would have acquired many more bits and pieces. She has many happy memories of the toy being part of her childhood, as it was for her children and grandchildren and wants to bring it back to its former glory. She approached the Te Awamutu Menzshed to see if they could help.

When the horse arrived at Te Awamutu’s “repair shop”, the ironwork, leather and body were all in a very sad state. The restoration to the wooden body was carried out by a founding shed member, Eddie Webster, who is well known for his wood art. Bill Were, one of the restorers, said there were some real challenges in completing the work. One of these was the tail. Where would they get a horse’s tail from? The answer was synthetic hay-baling twine in the Menzshed gardeners’ shed. It was plaited into a tail, with a piece of copper wire in the middle to hold its shape. Waipā District Councillor Hazel was delighted with the restoration.

Menzshed Chairman Steve Mannington said they often get requests to restore items, but never one as old as this. The team is constantly making furniture for kindergartens and play

centres and also boosts funds by building pest traps for community organisations and the district council. For more information about Menzshed go to https:// menzshed.org.nz/

Te Awamutu’s sub union has just a few weeks to solve a seven-year-old puzzle. In 2014, the Te Awamutu Sports grandstand was renovated and photos and an honour board from the sub union clubroom went into storage. Sub union president Andrew Young said that for the last four years the club has been on the hunt to recover those pieces of its history. “When the grandstand underwent renovation, we had a team of volunteers to help clear out the space, but it saw all these pieces get lost in the process,” he said. “Over the last four years we have been going on a more serious search for the missing pieces but so far it’s been fruitless.” He said that over the years he has had many tips offs, but none have worked out. He is hoping extra publicity on the search might make a difference as the A special pays homage to the sub union’s sub union prepares 100 years – will the honours board make it for a November 13 to the match? centenary game. COMMUNITY BOARD REPORT

Go ahead for skateparks By Angie Holt, Chair, Te Awamutu Community Board

The October Community Board Meeting included an update on skatepark proposal and two notices of motions – for council to leave Local Government New Zealand – which was not backed - and for council to refer to the old Bunning’s carpark as the Arawata Street Carpark, which was supported. My report highlighted discussion about the Turata water tower, getting the Peace Fountain going for Armistice Day and creating a working group to evaluate Te Awamutu’s identity going forward. Applications to the discretionary fund from Te Awamutu Rotary ($3000) and the Te Awamutu Rose Society ($2000) were approved. You can read the agenda or watch the meeting on YouTube by going to www. waipadc.govt.nz/our-council/agendas-andminutes . Last week I gave a presentation to Council as part of the Representation Review to highlight why most of the community board believe we should continue to be a part of our local government structure. I am delighted to see that the recommendation from that meeting is to retain community boards. It is also intended that council staff will facilitate a full review of community boards, with a focus on identifying improvements. This is a welcome addition in my opinion as I believe we can do better. Improved support from staff and councillors, such as by getting reports in time for us to get out into the community and discuss them before making our decision or recommendation would be an advantage. With talk of doing away with community boards in Waipā it has also given us an

opportunity to reflect and consider what we can improve on. No matter what business you are in there is always room for improvement. In doing my presentation I worked out that the Te Awamutu Community Board costs the ratepayers in our subdivisions (Te Awamutu, Kihikihi and Kakepuku) about $10 a year. So a miniscule investment funds an elected team of people batting in your corner and for our side of the district. I was also delighted that we recommended to staff (and they have agreed) that the Peace Fountain should be working for the Armistice Day functions held in the Te Awamutu War Memorial Park. Approval has been given in the Long Term Plan to build four skateparks across Waipā. A Waikato skate park developer has been employed to draw up high level concept plans and engage with the skate community to help create a design that is desirable and achievable. The first planned engagement event for Te Awamutu is next Monday, from 4pm to 5.30 at the Rewi Street skate bowl, Centennial Park. A second session will also be held at the same venue at from 3.30 to 5pm on Wednesday. If you are a keen skate park user or have family members that are, come down and have a chat. Please contact any of the members if you have a topic you would like to discuss with them or bring to the Community Board table. Our next meeting is on November 9.

“Mummy. I’m bored!” The cry no parent wants to hear. Especially as underlying the cry is the expectation or demand that the parent bears responsibility for the child’s boredom and therefore the obligation to fix it. As a parent of young children I had a different mind-set. “Good,” I used to respond to their whine. “Now you can discover something completely new to do.” Which, as you can imagine, went down like a lead balloon, but did, over time reduce the number of times I heard that complaint. Much more importantly however, it led to children who were encouraged and capable of using their imaginations in wide ranging ways – which led to adults who are self-reflective and able to bring their fertile imaginations to deal creatively with the many challenging situations and disappointments life throws up. I believe creativity is an inbuilt capacity of every human – gifted to us by our creative and creating God. We have imaginations as a tool to use for our own wellbeing as well as for the benefit of others. Each of us will express that creativity in different ways; from music and dance to gardening and woodwork, building software and finding innovative solutions to problems that confront us and society. Right now, creativity is the key to not just surviving but thriving in a society where other freedoms are limited by a pandemic. We are exhorted in 1 Thessalonians 5:1618, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” A friend shared the other day that she woke feeling very empty and down.

Then she remembered the Biblical encouragement to rejoice and give thanks, so she lay still, remembering all the wonderful things she had experienced and the love that fills her life. She suddenly realised what a wonderful thing it was to have another day to enjoy all that she has, and to help others enjoy it as well. Imagination helps us to recreate the lens through which we look at the world, seeing the glass that is half full for the gift that it is. But imagination is so much more than that. The real riches in life come from going deep into our soul with God. God is the creator and carer of our soul and wants nothing more than our time and attention. He is described as a jealous God: (Ex 34:16) meaning that God wants our time and attention. But learning to listen to God and care for our souls is work. So we make ourselves too busy or distracted. In John 10:10. Jesus tells us “The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come that they might have life and have it to the full.” Jesus understood the attraction of distraction and warns us against it. He came to show another way, a life lived with God. While so much else in life is limited, we have a wonderful opportunity to use our creativity to cultivate our relationship with God. Explore some of Jesus’ multi-layered stories, put yourself in them and talk with God about what you learn. A world of love awaits you. Business Showcase

SPARKLY COUTURE BRINGS A NEW CHIC TO TE AWAMUTU ‘When life gives you Monday’ as the saying goes, ‘dip it in glitter and sparkle all day”. By far the best way to do that is to head off to Te Awamutu’s newest little gem, Sparkly Couture in Alexandra St. The boutique offers a range of brilliant, refurbished items of clothing that will make a bold statement about whoever purchases them. It aims at making people fearless about how they dress and accessorise to frame their unique individuality. The concept of embracing fashion to build confidence isn’t new to Sparkly Couture’s multi-talented owner, Tricia ‘Trish’ Shearer. She has made a name for herself by running her service online, and says the time is right to open her boutique. The range is all about inclusion, she says, nothing is out of bounds, nothing too whacky. “I like to see people reach their potential in their own empowerment. The way I see it, nothing is off limits, no

request will be too bizarre.” Fashion and design have long been Trish’s passion. Her experience includes doing colour co-ordination for clients, matching people’s wardrobes to their character. She is also a trained photographer who has styled for and done many fashion shoots, capturing memories for family photographs or campaign catalogues. Her keen purchasing eye ensures that the preloved items she stocks are nearnew and chic, anything from Hollywood

glamour, sleek elegance, sequinned brilliance or pageant style. The store offers a wedding package, with eclectic gowns reflecting a touch of wedding whimsy or boho magic. This boutique is far from ordinary. “We have in stock for all ages, all shapes and sizes … all types of events. There are uniquely styled pieces here, many of them have been worn just once. We also custom make dresses, so people

can bring in their ideas. We will find a way to give it to them.” Sustainability is important to Trish. The boutique is as much about frills, tulle and sequins as it is about making the most of what is already out there. Its spray tanning service uses all natural, organic ingredients, ensuring it is vegan-friendly and leaves no residue on clothes. Sparkly Couture has a full rental service, both online and in-store. It also offers a consignment service providing both online and retail opportunities for people to sell on commission. The website is www.sparklycouture.co.nz, and the new boutique is at 322 Alexandra Street in Te Awamutu. Opening hours are 10am to 4.30pm Tuesdays to Thursdays, with extended hours on Fridays, and from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays. Sundays and Mondays are for VIP shopping by appointment.

Well and truly successful Christmas

An award-winning food producer says Kaipaki, where she lives and runs Well & Truly Artisan Pantry, is the “best kept secret around”. Sue Loder has won the bountiful table category in the NZI Rural Women NZ Business Awards. She and husband Matt own Well and Truly Pantry and produce certified gluten-free gourmet granolas and pantry products using produce from local growers and suppliers. “We’re a bit different, we choose to put people before profits, from the high-quality ingredients we choose, to the flexibility we offer our team, to the partnerships with our wholesale customers. “We believe in building a community that feels supported in their pursuit for a balanced life, which is super important now more than ever,” said Sue. The entire range is handcrafted, from blending of the ingredients to cooking and packaging. Each part of the process from the measuring of ingredients to the bag filling is all done by hand. Part of the balanced life for Sue and her family is living in their rural community. She says it’s funny that “most people we meet” don’t know where Kaipaki - between Te

Awamutu and Cambridge - is. It’s been an amazing year for Sue and the team, winning seven silver medals at the outstanding food producers awards and reaching the finals of the NZ Artisan Awards and

the New Zealand food awards where the winners will be announced later this month. “Winning the Rural Woman NZ bountiful table award is such an incredible honour, to be amongst such inspirational

women past and present is such a privilege and truly the icing on the cake (or should I say yoghurt on the granola).” The supreme Rural Women NZ Business award will be announced later this year.

comes early

Uncertainty over the impact of changing Covid levels has prompted Kids in Need Waikato to launch its Christmas gifting campaign slightly earlier than usual. The idea, says Kids in Need Waikato (KINW) founder Linda Roil, is to ensure that none of the children or carers they support are left out because of the pandemic’s effects. “We’re worried there may be more lockdowns, so want to start our annual Christmas campaign earlier this year,” she said. “We have a few wish trees up already, but they’re not available until we’re at level two. However, we have a new Kids in Need Waikato online Christmas shop and people going to our Facebook page will find various options via which they can donate.” KINW supports children in foster care, from the age of infancy through to their late teens, and the carers who look after them. Linda has won numerous awards since she founded KINW in 2017. Her organisation provides care packs for youngsters who are being cared for by grandparents or others who are not their own parents. Last year, with the help of community support, they sent out 1243 care packs. Linda said they are looking after around 150 families at this stage, and many of those are raising multiple children each. She said those seeking to help this year could either donate money, or toys – ideally ones that might encourage children to play outdoors. More details are available at the website, www.kidsinneed.co.nz, or on their Facebook page.

Sports chaplaincy: what it’s about

“We pride ourselves on making old age worth living”

Lifecare Cambridge...

I was asked some years ago if I would consider becoming a Sports Chaplain. I liked the idea but put it off for some time due to other commitments in my Church. Once these commitments allowed me to do so, I took up the challenge to train with Sports Chaplaincy NZ (SCNZ) and became an accredited Sports Chaplain for the St Peters 1st XV Rugby team. More recently I also took on being Sports Chaplain to the Cambridge Rugby Referees Association. In 2020, I was invited to act as interim SCNZ Regional Leader for the Waikato and King Country in a voluntary and very part time manner. In February 2021, I left my job to take up the role more fully and grow sports chaplaincy in this region. My role has four main parts. I identify people who may have the right motivation and skills to provide pastoral care and wellbeing support to sports organisations. I work with our national staff to arrange for their training and accreditation. I network with sporting teams and clubs to find suitable placement opportunities, and I provide our Sports Chaplains with ongoing supervision and support. SCNZ is a Christian faith-

based charity that began in 2013 to address the growing need for pastoral care and wellbeing support within sport. Our vision is to provide mental and emotional, relational and spiritual support freely to athletes, staff, and their whanau, across the sporting spectrum, at all levels of sport, and in every region of the nation. Our Sports Chaplains are skilled volunteers who serve within a team, club, or school sports context, by invitation, donating from four to eight hours a week into their role during a season. They act as first responders, providing immediate pastoral care and wellbeing support, as well as referring people on to professional care as required. They offer mentoring and life skills development, bereavement and grief care, critical incident support, career transition guidance, suicide awareness and prevention, and stress management. They do so without prejudice or precondition, always respecting a person’s personal perspective. SCNZ has eight part or full time Regional Leaders who care for this growing team of sports chaplains and seek to meet the ever-growing demand for such care within their region.

As a charity we are reliant on the good will and financial backing of individuals, grant making trusts, businesses and philanthropists who understand this need and wish to partner with us. Each of the Regional Leaders seeks to fund their salary and expenses from within their own region, with national funds supporting and subsidizing each region as it gets established and grows. Recent events have shone a light on the desperate need for people like Sports Chaplains to be readily available to top level athletes who are struggling with sometimes acute pressures in life. What is less publicly know is the extent of this need at all levels of sport. Whether it is being a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to offload with, a Sports Chaplain is that independent person who is regularly present, and is able to provide holistic, confidential and skilful support to athletes and staff irrespective of their lifestyle or beliefs. Those who are interested in finding out more about sports chaplaincy or supporting this community service can do so by emailing murray. hunt@sportschaplaincy. co.nz or checking out the SCNZ website at www. sportschaplaincy.co.nz

Waste not, want not…

Waipā District Council is sponsoring 50 spaces for residents to learn how to reduce waste. Hosted by Cambridge resident Nicola Turner from Mainstream Green, the online ‘Zero Waste Living for Everyday People’ course is exclusive to Waipā residents and takes people through the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of waste, and shows how to reduce waste at home over six weeks of video lessons and interactive resources. “This course is so great for beginners as it looks at the big picture but also practical steps people can take at a personal level,” Council’s Waste Minimisation Officer Sally Fraser said. “It’s a mix of live online Q&A, weekly recorded videos, and written resources. It’s designed for people who are just starting out in zero waste lifestyle.” The series is free for the first 50 residents who sign up. It starts on November 3 and is split into six weekly modules. The course will step people through everything they need to get motivated and start reducing their household waste. “Reducing waste doesn’t have to take a heap of time or effort - it’s all about making simple changes that suit our lifestyle,” Nicole Turner said. Waipā residents can sign up to the course at https:// bit.ly/ZWWaipa.

Crisis? What crisis?

Waipā District Councillors showed confidence in Government efforts to control Covid this week by approving funds for three summer events. They are the New Zealand ‘Big Air’ Nationals, which gets $4000, ORO Dressage by the Lake at Takapoto Estate, $4000, and the Wake NZ 2022 National Championships, $2000.

Council’s Event and Marketing Advisor, Claire Culph, said she hoped the country would be able to enjoy a summer of events. “Event organisers seem to still be nervous about continuing with event plans because there is no guarantee that we will reduce alert levels, but we remain hopeful to get a summer full of events. It is such

an enjoyable time for the district. Everyone gets out and about with their families and it’s a very busy time for all involved.” Mighty River Domain Site Manager and Waipā Deputy Mayor Liz Stolwyk said they have received a fair share of cancellations and postponements but are optimistic for the 2022 events season. “It is hard to say when we will drop alert levels. We just have to take each day as it comes. It is hard to predict but we are remaining positive,” said Stolwyk. But what was to be the next event on the Waipā events calendar, the Kihikihi Speedway season, starting on October 30, became another Covid victim this week. The club will launch the season with a fireworks opening night – to be held on November 13 instead. Guidelines for running events at the different alert levels, can be found at https://covid19.govt. nz/activities/events-andentertainment. Hamilton keeps the Peace

Hamilton has retained the Peace Cup – after organisers conceded the final between the holders and Piako had become unplayable thanks to Covid. The series for rugby sub unions in Waikato, Bay of Plenty and King Country went ahead without Cambridge and Te Awamutu this season – but North King Country did enter. “Waiting a couple of weeks for a hoped-for return wasn’t possible, so a unanimous decision was made to award Hamilton the Peace Cup as top qualifier,” Peace Cup chair Neil Macrae said. “Piako deservedly felt hard done by, finishing on equal points with Hamilton and still being under level two, ready and confident to play the Peace Cup Final. But with time effectively having run out, we had to make a call as to an end date.” Six regional representative teams were to kick off in late August before Covid 19 spread its wings, to delay the first round. This year was the first in a decade that the Peace Cup was put up as primary prize. The Stan Meads Shield – which has been introduced because the Peace Cup went missing - was

revitalised as challenge trophy. When the series did start it brought together Hamilton, Piako, Central Bay of Plenty and North King Country. Hamilton looked on course for a clean sweep after wins over Piako and North King Country but were upset by Central Bay. The Bay of Plenty side – bottom of the table - won the match 1712 after the sides turned with the scores at 12 all – and also took the challenge trophy. “Their somewhat surprise win proved the worth of a challenge trophy in the revamped Peace Cup competition,” Macrae said. “It gives

teams that are effectively out of finals contention the opportunity to win a trophy.” Piako drew level with Hamilton on 11 points apiece when they posted a bonus point victory 43-26 over North King Country, confirming a replay of the 2020 final. Hamilton would have played host, having won the round robin encounter with Piako – but then the Level 3 lockdown was declared, and the final was eventually cancelled. Organisers say in spite of the untimely ending, the competition produced a number of highlights. North King Country showed great promise and there is confidence that with right support and preparation, the team will perform even better next season. “Looking forward, one area where we need to improve on is ensuring that teams have the right support structures behind them,” Macrae said. “We have seen examples in previous years of individuals driving teams as opposed to administrative groups. This will be part of our early discussions and we are scheduling a meeting in the new year that will better prepare us for the future.”
